Offering more indelible proof that a great song can enjoy many lives and enthrall multiple generations, Ellis Hall's timeless, haunting ballad “Some Days Were Meant for Rain” is now the second single from In the World, the debut album of WHAT!!!!, the legendary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist's duo with Grammy winning keyboardist George Whitty. The track follows fast on the heels of the release of the powerhouse, eclectic 10-track collection and the October 2024 drop of its lead single, “Die Living,” The first song recorded for the project, “Hug Me” is an expansive anthemic power ballad that pays tribute to the tenacity and resolve of the citizens of Ukraine in the face of Russia's invasion and the ongoing war. In addition to his years with the group Tower of Power, Hall – who has been sightless since age 18 - fronted the Ellis Hall Group in the 70s, has written over 4000 soul, gospel, blues and pop songs, performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, George Benson and Maurice White and recorded with John Klemmer, George Duke and Kenny G, among countless others. He has also written and performed on many film soundtracks including The Lion King 2, Shrek 2, Invincible and Bruce Almighty. He also sang a Louis Armstrong tune in the Steven Spielberg film Catch Me If You Can. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

This week, we take a...hopefully discerning...look into the British musical horror comedy web series, "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared." Technically, this is just season 1, which only takes about 35 minutes to watch six episodes, and somehow this led to our 2nd-longest podcast episode ever. - What were the co-hosts' general feelings about this web series. Which one(s) found it at least entertaining, if not meaningful; and which one(s) found it frustratingly nonsensical & pointless? Can you guess which Geek was which? - What exactly were the motivations behind the makers of this web series? How much do the Geeks agree and/or disagree on those motivations? - One Geek referred to at least part of the project as cohesive & having meaning. Which Geek was the first to grunt at such a notion? - What was the significance of June 19th in the web series? - What was the main redeeming quality that one critical Geek gave the web series? - Did the Geeks feel the series had any successful horror or comedy elements? - What was the explanation behind the title of the series, and did it make any sense to the other Geeks? - What one-time scoring system did one Geek come up with specifically for this web series? - How did this review lead to references to Star Trek, Pink Floyd, urine, Shakespeare, Bluey, N.C. State basketball, Lost, philosophers Plato & Diogenes, a BBC show called "Ghost Watch," the movie "Dead Poets Society," and Elon University's one-month winter terms? Listen now for the answers to these and other cryptic questions as we try...with varied success...to make sense of..."Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared" (season 1). Produced on a whim by a bunch of art students in between their proper assignments, the first Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared Short went viral on YouTube. Centering on some hapless puppets experiencing existential horror through vividly graphic musical numbers, Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared struck a chord with an online audience receptive to its ambiguity and strangeness. The unexpected success of the initial video led to a crowdfunding campaign for additional shorts and, after a failed pilot, a television program. Ryan is joined by Rachel for a closer look at the first run of Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared. Talking points include the deliberate uncertainty of the narrative, how the medium of online video affected perception of Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared, and what these shorts have to say about neoliberalism, individuality, and absurdism. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support
You may have heard this one before - or maybe not! Either way, it's well worth a listen. In one of our most popular episodes we sat down to chat with Kay Kerr about her book 'Love & Autism' which, given the timing (a week after Valentine's Day) seemed like a good reason to do an encore. Original Episode Description: In this episode, Jacinta and Lachlan interview Kay Kerr about her new book Love & Autism. Love & Autism presents an uplifting celebration of neurodivergent love, the search for it and a deeper look into the lives of autistic Australians. We chat to Kay about where the idea came from, the interview and drafting process, autistic affirmation and joy, and what she thinks lies ahead for the next generation of autistics. About our guest Kay Kerr is an autistic author and journalist from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Her debut novel Please Don't Hug Me (2020) was shortlisted for Book of the Year for Older Children at the Australian Book Industry Awards in 2021, and listed as a ‘Notable Book' by the Children's Book Council of Australia. Between 2 Butts: The Podcast That Lets Nothing Slip Between The Cracks
It's a casual no-guests episode! Tice and Jay exchange loving beard compliments and, as we are approaching the date of Becca's nuptials we talk about nebulous wedding dress codes, and dress-pant sweatpants. Becca and Jay reflect on their recent performances in The Sound of Music (as the Baroness and Captain von Trapp) and their character choices-- how the Baroness is NOT just a bitch, how Jay got to show some range and explore the Captain's psychology, and...IS there a secret throuple in the Von Trapp mansion? Then Jay makes a tribute to co-star and professional opera singer Kelly Glyptis with a very metal take on "Phantom of the Opera", aaaaand we conclude our 6-part series in reaction to "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared", at least until it starts its new series on BBC-4. To conclude we play an improv game Tice made up before the podcast, called "Back to One". DO NOT WEAR SWEATPANTS WHILE LISTENING TO THIS EPISODE! Becca expects better. It's our second Mary Worth live table read! But we cover so much ground before that. Before we even get to our main topics, we talk Valentine's Day rituals, high and low butt cracks, and goat yoga. Then Jay presents his latest Greatest Thing on the Interwebs ("Titanic 2: Jack's Back") and Becca presents installment 4 of "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared" (RIP, Spaghetti/Squid Guy?). And finally, Tice directs a gender-blind performance of the recent storyline from the funny pages' "Mary Worth", in which loathsome narcissist Wilbur Weston gets into a turf war with his lady-friend's cat and gets dumped for it. Will Mary Worth do the horrible thing and help patch things up between the two of them? Of course, she will, but not without suffering through a karaoke fight. Becca Harney as Wilbur, Jay Tilley as Mary/Estelle, Tice as Various. Listen as we all increasingly overact thanks to the strip's erratic use of bold-face. You'll learn nothing, except maybe that interior monologue always sounds like Bane.
Kay Kerr is an autistic author and journalist from the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Her debut novel Please Don't Hug Me came out in 2020 and was shortlisted for Book of the Year for Older Children at the Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIA), and listed as a ‘Notable Book' by the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA). Her second novel, Social Queue, was released with Text Publishing in October of this year. It is a funny and heart-warming romance about deciphering the confusing signals of attraction and navigating a path to love. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Between 2 Butts: The Podcast That Lets Nothing Slip Between The Cracks
We open the episode celebrating our successes with new catch-phases, marriages, and Jay fresh off the high of a production of Sweeney Todd, which had been postponed since before the Covid shutdown. Jay recaps his return to the theat-ahhhhh, including a production glitch that everyone handled *just right*. Becca has another lovely installment of "Don´t Hug Me, I'm Scared" for the boys to react to, and Tice reacts to the Pratt-ification of the upcoming Mario and Garfield movies, with Jay pontificating on which trendy phrases are douchey. We close out with another game of True Confessions about Jay and a brush with fame.

Kay Kerr is a former journalist and newspaper editor from Brisbane. Her debut novel is the widely acclaimed Please Don't Hug Me.Social Queue introduces us to Zoe.Zoe has Autism and that means her everyday can be tough. Social spaces aren't designed for her and this forces her to navigate a world of noise, bustle and crowds that leaves her exhausted. Worse, people just expect her to be ok with these things and that adds another layer of exhaustion as Zoe must choose to explain her discomfort or hide until she can feel safe. But now Zoe's finished school and landed her dream internship at Bubble, an online media company. After the hell of high school, this is Zoe's chance to greet life on her terms. And her first story pitch is a huge success!Dating was a non-event for Zoe at school and when she writes about all the missed opportunities, she's overwhelmed with likes; including a few secret crushes.Zoe embarks on a fact finding mission. By talking to each of her secret crushes she's hoping to piece together exactly how love and dating is supposed to work and who knows, maybe love is still on the cards with someone? There's a moment in Social Queue where Zoe is trying to figure out why things can't just be a bit easier for her, and she talks about the social model of disability. The social model of disability is a theoretical framework that respects people's individual differences and identifies disabilities as the product of barriers in society. When a wheelchair user requires the modification of a ramp, it's no different to a non-wheelchair user requiring the modification of stairs. We're all trying to get to the next level, it's just some of us have the privilege of having barriers removed without us even being aware of it.In Zoe's case she has to puzzle over the potential cues and signals she missed from crushes. Her life at school was a swamp of sensory overload and bullying that meant she didn't have the emotional energy for much else. But now as she revisits old friends and even bullies who claim they really liked her she must negotiate the toxic world of what we do, or say we do, in the name of love.Zoe is an extraordinary character to travel along with as she takes this journey. Kerr's writing is such that we feel instantly connected moving from her internal to external world effortlessly. As Zoe meets up with friends, bullies and passing acquaintances we are confronted by the ways that we all try to negotiate love and affection. There's a particularly effective scene where a old crush describes a series of innocuous actions he took to get her attention. She is baffled, as I suspect you would be too dear reader, that somehow these amounted to a declaration of love. Zoe may have missed the cues, but the question we all are left asking is how anyone ever falls in love if we're going to be this obtuse. The reader's connection with Zoe is of the type that we might feel that we relate to Zoe's experience. This felt deliberate on Kerr's part. Our closeness to Zoe invites us to share and relate to her experience but also challenges us to recognise that these are barriers thrown up against her as an Autistic person (Zoe's preferred language).Throughout the novel Zoe works with her colleagues at Bubble, as well as with friends and her newly discovered old crushes, to educate them about the way disability is framed in society. We see the real emotional burden she shoulders and the toll it takes on her.Social Queue invites us into Zoe's world and gives us privileged access to her life. We see her triumph and also her suffering but are asked to understand not pity.Coming back to the social model of disability I mentioned at the top. Having to talk about, explain and justify their very existence is a burden too often placed on people living with a disability. In the Social Queue we see the lived experience of this but also the ways that Zoe and her close group work together to make her life something wonderful.I love Kay Kerr's books for their wonderful characters and their heartfelt elucidation of life. Reading Social Queue makes me infinitely glad that I'm not on the apps, but also that there is a wonderful world of love out there for people who take the time for each other...

This episode sees us actually go down a YouTube rabbit hole, starting with Becca presenting part 1 of "Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared", a part-puppetry, part-animated short film with some Yo Gabba Gabba vibes, that, as Jay says, "gets a little metal". Then Jay recalls "Hanker for a Hunk of Cheese", a cartoon PSA/ad from the 70s about making snacks. After viewing and reading the comments, Tice goes off on boomer memes about drinking from the garden hose. Finally, Jay sees a video in the suggestion bar that he can't leave alone, simply called "I've Got a Bad Case of Diarrhea" (generally the opposite effect of a hunk of cheese). Next, Jay talks about being "not for everybody" and the reasons why you shouldn't try to be, and then we play an improv favorite, "Yay! Boo!"

Dans cet épisode : Le projet Hug Me! Kay Kerr is a freelance writer, author and former community newspaper editor. Her debut novel is Please Don’t Hug Me and it is out now from Text Publishing. Please Don’t Hug Me is the story of Erin. Erin is completing high school and has her sights set on schoolies as the unofficial finishing line. She’s juggling study, friends and keeping a job that will allow her to pay for the trip.Erin is also on the autism spectrum but only a few people know. She’s got her best friend Dee, who is always ready with doughnuts to fix a bad day. Dee has been her rock for years but Dee is also talking about taking a gap year at the end of year twelve, so where does that leave their friendship?Erin’s new friend Aggie seems to always know the right thing to say. Aggie seems to effortlessly make everything look easy and Erin doesn’t know if her life will ever look like that. Please Don’t Hug Me is an epistolary novel, which is a story told through letters and correspondence. Erin is writing almost daily letters to her brother chronicling her life at school and yearning for his guidance navigating the social speed bumps of year twelve. This narrative style creates an interesting tension precisely because we only hear Erin’s voice. Rudy does not write back and his silence creates an opening in which Erin must forge her own path. The title Please Don’t Hug Me refers to Erin’s need to communicate that she doesn’t like hugs the way everyone else seems to. This is part of her sensory needs on the Autism Spectrum. Erin feels like she’s constantly out of sync with people around her but she also has unique and hard won insights into herself and her friends.Erin’s perspectives open up the world of her school and her friends as she tries to figure out how her brain fits in with the neurotypical brains around her. Erin learns that people don’t want to hear about negative emotions and that society has different standards for her as a woman. In shaping Erin’s letters Kay Kerr is opening an experience of the Autism Spectrum in the life of a young woman. She shows us how Erin’s struggles are both unique and also familiar. Erin knows she must work hard to figure out what is typical and expected and that even when she works that out, these things might not make her happy or even fit who she is.Kay’s narrative is an important work for its representation of a character on the Autism Spectrum outside of the stereotypes that too often permeate popular depictions. It’s also an important work in its challenge of social norms around gender, race and cultural stereotypes that through Erin’s eyes are bonds that hold people back when they should be moving forward.Kay Kerr’s Please Don’t Hug Me has a stunning pink and doughnut cover. It’s out through Text and I’d highly recommend checking it out.
Kay Kerr’s debut young adult novel, Please Don’t Hug Me, explores love, loss and friendship through the eyes of Erin, a young woman on the autism spectrum. Kay joins Anna Whateley, a fellow neurodivergent author, for a funny, warm and enlightening conversation about Please Don’t Hug Me, the joys and complexities of writing the teen experience, and the importance of the #ownvoices movement in YA literature. This conversation is part of our YA podcast series.
'I would love young autistic girls to find this book, first and foremost…there's not a lot of books out there where they would see themselves reflected back.' Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction with the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For May that debut is Kay Kerr's YA novel Please Don't Hug Me, out now from Text Publishing. Erin is looking forward to Schoolies, at least she thinks she is. But things are not going to plan. Life is getting messy, and for Erin, who is autistic, that's a big problem. Please Don't Hug Me is a funny-serious own-voices story about what happens when you stop trying to be the person other people expect you to be and give yourself a go. Kay Kerr is a former journalist and community newspaper editor from Brisbane, now living on the Sunshine Coast with her husband and daughter and working as a freelance writer. Kay was writing the first draft of Please Don't Hug Me when she received her own autism-spectrum diagnosis. Our June First Book Club title will be Fathoms: The World in the Whale by Rebecca Giggs (Scribe Publications). Our theme song is Broke for Free's ‘Something Elated'. Further reading: Read Ellen Cregan's review of Please Don't Hug Me in our May Books Roundup. Read Kay's Shelf Reflection on her reading habits and the writing that inspired the novel. (more…)

Each month we celebrate an Australian debut release of fiction or non-fiction with the Kill Your Darlings First Book Club. For April that debut is Ronnie Scott's novel The Adversary, out now from Penguin Random House. After a long winter in a creaky share house in Brunswick, a young man is pushed out of his comfort zone in search of friendship and love. This is a funny and exhilarating debut novel about sexuality, sociability and sticky summers at the pool. Ronnie Scott writes essays and criticism for newspapers, websites and magazines. In 2007 he founded the Lifted Brow, an independent literary magazine. He's a Lecturer in the Writing and Publishing discipline at RMIT University. The Adversary is his first novel.
