Die siebenjährige Olive hat eine Obsession für Schönheitswettbewerbe. Vor dem Fernseher ahmt sie die weinenden Gewinnerinnen nach und arbeitet selbst hart an einer Choreographie, die ihr bei Wettbewerben die Trophäe sichern soll. Ihr Opa Edwin hat sich des Kindes angenommen und verbringt viel Zeit damit, mit ihr im Keller zu üben und zu choreografieren. Dann kommt der unverhoffte Anruf: Olive kann als Zweitplazierte nachrücken, weil die Gewinnerin mit Diätpillen betrogen hat. Damit ist sie berechtigt, am bundesweiten Wettbewerb in JWD teilzunehmen. Da die Familie sich keinen Flug leisten kann, fahren sie mit ihrem klapprigen VW-Bus los, um auf einem Roadtrip allerlei Scheiße mitzunehmen: die Kupplung gibt den Geist auf, was bedeutet dass alle anschieben und aufspringen müssen, der Buchdeal des Vaters platzt, der Sohn entdeckt seine Farbenblindheit und muss seinen Traum als Jetpilot begraben - und der Großvater der Familie stirbt an Drogenmissbrauch. Von all dem will sich die Familie nicht abhalten lassen. Sie wollen Olive unbedingt den Wunsch erfüllen und schaffen es gerade so, sich in den Wettbewerb einzuschreiben. Die Bühnenperformances der Kinder allerdings schlagen bei den Familienmitgliedern Alarm. Viel zu professionalisiert, viel zu perfektioniert und aufgehübscht ist die Welt der Kinderschönheitswettbewerbe. Olive ist keinem der bis zur Traumatisierung hochgezüchteten Kinder gewachsen. Olive will trotzdem auf die Bühne, und nun zeigt sich das Erbe des Großvaters: der Tanz des Mädchens gleicht der Stripshow eines billigen Sex-Schuppens. Das Publikum ist entsetzt, die Familie völlig überrascht. Aber in einem Akt der Solidarität kommen Vater, Mutter, Bruder und suizidaler Freund der Familie auf die Bühne und tanzen mit. Ein gemeinschaftlicher Mittelfinger an die toxische Professionalität der Wettbewerbsmaschinerie. Zwar ist der Schönheitswettbewerb der Aufhänger, aber eigentlich sehen wir einer vermeintlich dysfunktionalen Familie dabei zu, wie sie zusammenwachsen und als Individuen zueinander finden. Plor, ich habe unter massiven Schmerzen recherchiert, wie Schönheitswettbewerbe für Kinder und auch Erwachsene in Amerika und auch anderen Teilen der Welt aussehen.
