1994 studio album by The Notorious B.I.G.
POPULARITY
The Notorious B.I.G. entered adulthood as a crack dealer and left this world as one of the most famous hip-hop stars of all time. He was murdered mysteriously and before that was arrested almost too many times to count. He eventually altered the course of hip-hop with the release of his debut album, Ready To Die, an album that served as a soundtrack of sorts for the highly publicized, dangerous, violent beef between himself and his one-time friend, fellow rapper, Tupac Shakur. But that whole saga almost never happened. Find out what changed the course of Biggie Smalls' life and ultimately led to his untimely demise in part one of The Notorious B.I.G. story. I just realized as I started writing this blog that today is a day in history we will never forget. Twenty-three years ago, September 11, 2001, America was attacked by Islamic terrorist in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania. The day began as a normal day for most Americans as they woke up, dressed and went to work. But before the morning was over, these terrorist attacks would kill 2,977 people from 90 nations. The final number of 2,753 people were killed in New York; 184 people were killed at the Pentagon; and 40 people were killed on Flight 93 in Pennsylvania. These dear people woke up that morning never realizing in a few short hours their lives on earth would be over. The truth is that none of us know when we will die. The big question is always the same for all of us. Am I ready to die? Well today, we have a wonderful story, attached to the Christmas story in Luke 2, that assures us that we can be prepared for death when it comes our way. In this passage of Scripture, our attention is drawn to a man named Simeon, a godly man who was waiting for "the consolation of Israel" (2:25). This verse tells us that the Holy Spirit was upon him. Simeon had been given inner assurance that he would not die until he had actually seen the Lord's Christ (2:26). Simeon was looking forward to "the consolation of Israel." "The consolation of Israel" means the messianic hope. The phrase was also used among the Jews as a formula of blessing. The name Simeon means "hearing." The Bible says that "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17). This suggests that Simeon spent much of his time pouring over the prophetic page. Simeon and Anna, like Zacharias and Elizabeth, were a part of the faithful Jewish remnant that eagerly looked for their Messiah (Mal. 3:16). One of the traditional Jewish prayers is, "May I see the consolation of Israel!" That prayer was answered for Simeon when he saw Jesus Christ in the temple. He was a man who was led by the Spirit of God, taught by the Word of God, and obedient to the will of God; and therefore, he was privileged to see the salvation of God. How important it is for people to see God's salvation, Jesus Christ, before they see death. The Old Testament Jews revered the Scriptures; nevertheless, the Old Testament was full of unattainable precepts, unfulfilled promises, and unexplained procedures. The apostle Paul later described his own inability to keep the law (Rom. 7). And to what purpose were all of the endless sacrifices and ceremonies of Old Testament religion? And what about the multitude of prophecies that remained unfulfilled? Simeon understood that these seeming deficiencies could be resolved only in the person of Christ (Dan. 9:24-26). Christ was the answer to his incomplete Bible. The Spirit of God made clear to him that he would see Him when He came. He would not die until then. We can imagine how eagerly he scanned the faces of young and old after that (2:27). Then one day, it happened. He saw a young man and a young woman carrying a Baby. They were coming into the temple to present Him to God. The Holy Spirit urged Simeon: That's Him! He stepped forward boldly. Of course! A Baby! All doubts were swept aside. This was the One of whom all of the prophets had written! Simeon gazed into the face of a Baby, the face of God manifest in flesh. Instantly, he was ready to die! Death was no longer a devourer but a deliverer. The word depart in the Greek has several meanings, and each of them tells us something about the death of a Christian. It means to release a prisoner, to untie a ship and set sail, to take down a tent (see 2 Cor. 5:1-8), and to unyoke a beast of burden (see Matt. 11:28-30). God's people are not afraid of death because it only frees us from the burdens of this life and leads into the blessings of the next life. Like Simeon, may our eyes be open to see Jesus today! Have you ever seen Jesus as the only hope for your salvation? God bless!

Alex Green lost football, then he almost lost his life. The former NFL running back shares his chilling story with Go Long on our latest Happy Hour session. This may be our most compelling yet with Green, the ex-Packer, detailing his descent into a gripping addiction to alcohol, weed and cocaine. In harrowing detail, he relives the night he nearly overdosed.Thank you to those who joined the Zoom call and brough such excellent questions. As a reminder, these are always open to our paid subscribers. Is there a former player you'd like to hang out with? Let me know at golongtd@gmail.com.Green was exceptionally transparent, expanding on everything he initially revealed in January 2022. Audio and video is above, and available everywhere you access podcasts, including Apple, Spotify and YouTube. * Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley gunning for his torn ACL in those Packers/Lions games. (Who would've thunk it?!)* After tearing up defenses at Hawaii, Green was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round. He was surprised himself. Football stories are shared sporadically, including the (now hilarious) night Green and DuJuan Harris watched their employer draft Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin. They knew they were toast right then. * Jets Football wasn't real NFL football. * His fall. Once Green finished with the NFL and CFL, he slipped into a cycle of “depression, anxiety, a lot of fear.” He became somebody else, coping with the anguish by filling his body with drugs. He cut people out of his life. He became a total recluse heading down a very dark path. In his mind, drugs became a “best friend.” Specifically, cocaine. * Hopelessness eventually set in. Staring at a mountain of cocaine, one night, Green was prepared to overdose and end his life. (“It's right there. You're that close.”) With one message — I need help — one conversation saved his life, then changed his life. The fact that this text message reached the right person is a miracle itself. He explains. * Transforming his life was not possible overnight. Eliminating suicidal “ideations” and discovering meaning in his life has been gradual. He's still working at it. But Green wants to help everyone he possibly can. * We take the conversation big picture. Green knows many former players deal with the same emotions. The pain can be both physical and mental when the cheering stops. Similar conversations/features at Go Long, icymi: * The Fight for Erik Kramer's life * What happened to Kevin Kolb?* The Majik Man's Final Comeback * Ryan Leaf wants to save NFL players' lives * The impossible life of LeRoy ButlerOur two-part series on the Chicago Bears & Caleb Williams: * Part I: All falls apart* Part II: 'Mini Mahomes'Go Long is your independent home for longform journalism. There's no sugarcoating this one...in today's episode, we're talking about 'death'.Before you switch off your sets, let us (Josh & Has) explain...it's a taboo subject that people are afraid to talk about. By definition, the realization that you've experienced a close brush with death can't come until after you've survived, but sometimes you might realize you're already standing on thin ice, left to wonder how you're going to stay alive. We hope these moments in life are few, if at all, but when they do occur, reliving them with the safety and clarity of hindsight can teach us lessons about ourselves that we may otherwise never know. In his piece “Melting Away — Ice Fishing on LSD While Your World Dissolves,” a story published as part of Good Beer Hunting's Olly Olly series in collaboration with Oskar Blues, writer and photographer Mark LaFaro describes his venture onto a frozen lake in Minnesota and what brought him there in the first place—the end of a partnership for him and the dawning of a new era for his friend Finney, who recently became a new parent. Beginnings and ends like these can feel similarly rudderless and isolating, something Mark and Finney found out during what ended up being a more treacherous outing than they originally anticipated. In this conversation with Mark, he told me he'd do it all again, maybe with a bit less LSD and definitely with some more safety precautions. He also talks about how despite the fact that fishing is closely tied to drinking, how the two alcohol-free friends managed to still open their horizons and hearts to one another during a terrifying, but somewhat necessary catharsis for them both. The two friends danced on the edge of life and came back to tell the tale, and we're fortunate to hear all about it.
