Kirstie Ennis is an amazing individual. After being injured in Afghanistan and forced into a medical retirement from her Marine Sergeant service, she found new ways to serve and help others. "Hero" best describes Kirstie Ennis. She joined the Marine Corps at just 17 years old. Over the years that she served, she performed duties as a helicopter door gunner and airframes mechanic. On June 23, 2012, during her last deployment to Afghanistan, her helicopter went down. As a result of the crash, she sustained multiple injuries, including those to her back, face, and brain. After more than 40 surgeries, she has accomplished more with one leg than most people will ever do with two. Kirstie competed as a Paralympic snowboarder and then ventured into mountaineering, where her goal is to complete the Seven Summits by the end of 2021. Kirstie also serves people through the Kirstie Ennis Foundation, giving back to thousands of people annually with monetary gifts and refurbished prosthetics.
Kirstie Ennis is a complete badass. A marine sergeant injured in Afghanistan in a helicopter crash eventually resulting in an above the knee amputation, Kirstie is an absolute all-around mountain athlete who is seeking to climb the 7 summits- the tallest mountain on each continent. In a podcast focused on driven, inspiring people, Kirstie stands out. In 2019 she won an ESPY for the Pat Tillman Service Award, she's competed in the Paralympics for snowboarding, walked 1,000 miles across England (which we didn't even get into!), has been a stuntwoman in various Hollywood productions, and so much more. More importantly she uses her platform and story to inspire everyone, from fellow amputees to mountaineers to people seeking their best selves. In this episode we chat all about her journey and focus in on her attempts at the seven summits. How a trip up Kilimanjaro galvanized this project, the craziness involved in summiting Carstenzs (Oceana's highest point), and why calling it two hundred meters from the top of Everest was a wise albeit difficult decision to make. Hope you guys enjoy the show!! Kirstie is awesome and I'm honored to get an opportunity to share her adventures!! Kirstie Ennis is an American hero and a shining example of the power of a positive mindset and of having a purpose greater than yourself. Kirstie is a former helicopter mechanic and gunner in the United States Marines. In 2012, while on a routine resupply mission to an extraction in Afghanistan, her helicopter crashed and she sustained extensive injuries including a traumatic brain injury, damage to her spine, a shoulder injury and ultimately a leg injury that required her left leg to be amputated above the knee. One year to the day from her accident, Kirstie attempted to take her own life. Relying on her own incredible inner strength and with a solid support network around her, Kirstie has gone from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs (literally), dedicating her life to serving and inspiring others through her actions as an adventure philanthropist. Among many other ambitious endeavors, she is attempting to climb the Seven Summits (having climbed 4 of the 7 so far) – raising money for and creating impact in each of the local communities in which she climbs and inspiring everyone who hears her story along the way. Among many incredible honors, Kirstie is the winner of the Pat Tillman Award at the 2019 ESPY’s. In this hour-long conversation we walk through Kirstie's journey to the Marines, through the crash and recovery, and how she rediscovered her purpose in the process and went on to change the world.

Born prematurely due to drugs and alcohol, to a mother he would never meet, Kionte Storey spent the first 10 years of his life raised by his second cousin. He would spend 8 more years in foster care, before he found the Marine Corps. Joining the Marines was a form of escape, but also a way to prove something to himself, and possibly a chance at a better life. Unfortunately, his time in the Marine Corps would be cut short by an IED in Afghanistan that took his right leg. Storey found new challenges in recovery, this time fighting thoughts of suicide and hopelessness with his newfound physical injuries. But through it all - an adverse childbirth and upbringing, and now life as an amputee - Kionte Storey has found the strength to persevere and push through the dark times. And now he hopes to be a beacon and inspiration for others who are struggling. Hear his powerful and inspirational story on our very last episode of 2019! This dates back to her enlistment in the Marine Corps at age 17, growing up with not one, but two Marine parents.During her second deployment to Afghanistan in June 2012, Kirstie sustained polytraumatic injuries from a helicopter crash including traumatic brain injury, facial and spine injuries, and leg trauma that eventually left her with an amputation above the knee. After being hurt overseas, Kirstie went on to become a Paralympian snowboarder, a proud contestant at Prince Harry’s 2016 Invictus Games, and a member of a Veteran team on a 1000 mile trek across Great Britain with the organization Walking With The Wounded. She continues to push herself every day while giving back to others through mountaineering and world travel. Broken, but I am still here and I still can. "When I was in the hospital I didn't have that role model" (amputees, or people in a wheelchair).."and that's what I've been trying to be for other people." Kirstie Ennis If you haven't heard of Kirstie Ennis, here's a quick introduction (you can learn more here: Kirstie Ennis is redefining beautiful. When you look at her picture, you know right away Kirstie is a beautiful woman, but she doesn't always feel that way. You might not notice the scars on her face, or her prosthetic leg, but Kirstie does. "The injury doesn't define me but it's absolutely a part of who I am." Kirstie grew up as an strong and attractive young woman. Her parents were both Marines, and she joined the Marines at at 17, wanting to help others. Kirstie was a helicopter gunner who served in two deployments. During her second deployment, her helicopter was shot down. Kirstie suffered a traumatic brain injury, injuries to her spine, face, brain, and shoulders, and her left leg. She's had over 40 surgeries since then. The most difficult for Kirstie was an above the knee amputation of her left leg. "I needed to see myself as someone who could be sexy, or be attractive...Now I want to show other people that they can do it for themselves too." As someone who had always been active, the healing process has been difficult for her, and one year after the accident, she lost hope. Fortunately, after a talk with her dad, Kirstie found new motivation, and has kept moving forward ever since. Kirstie says she's accomplished things she'd never imagined since her accident, and she can't wait to see what the future holds. I was lucky to catch up with Kirstie and have a great conversation about disability, beauty, and what she's doing to change the way people view both. In the midst of tragedy, it is difficult to understand the good that can come of it. We often hear stories of those who have endured unthinkable trials and have not only lived through them but found their purpose within them. How can we too learn from those who have risen above their circumstances when we are faced with our own adversity? Listen to the podcast HERE This week we are speaking with former marine gunner, Kirstie Ennis, who suffered intensive injuries including a leg amputation after her helicopter crashed. In this episode, we discuss how she not only overcame her obstacles but went on to create a non-profit organization, climb mountains, and become an adventure athlete. Kirstie truly believes in the philosophy that we have to be uncomfortable to grow and look for situations to push ourselves. She encourages us to look at how far we’ve come rather than where we still have to go. Questions I Asked: Did you feel stripped of your identity? What types of workouts do you perform to prepare for the mountains? Did setting goals pull you through rehab? Topics Discussed: Coming back from a devastating tragedy. Continuing when people tell you that you shouldn’t. The importance of milestones and the journey. Quotes from the show: “Instead of what I lost I decided to look at what I gained.” @kirstieennis “What’s right in front of me that can help me?” @kirstieennis “Keep going after the big mountains.” @kirstieennis “You have to be uncomfortable to grow.” @kirstieennis How you can stay in touch with Kirstie: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram How you can stay in touch with Linda: Website Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest YouTube SoundCloud "Proud Sponsors of the Sisterhood of S.W.E.A.T" Essential Formulas Giovannicosmetics.com My daily energy stems from mushrooms... mushroom coffee that is! A self-described hellion growing up, Kirstie Ennis has always had the fire inside of her to overcome virtually any obstacle. That trait was put to the test on June 23, 2012, when the helicopter she was a door gunner on crashed in Afghanistan while performing combat resupplies. Kirstie, the daughter of two Marines, had planned to stay in the Marine Corps for a full career. The injuries she sustained as a result of the crash, which included an above-the-knee amputation on her left leg and a traumatic brain injury, forced her to medically retire from the Marine Corps in 2014. The fire inside was never needed more than in her years of recovery, fighting to become something greater than the person she was before joining the military. And Kirstie has done just that. She's now a mountaineer, Olympic hopeful, and the first female US veteran above-the-knee amputee to summit Carstensz Pyramid, a 16K foot peak in Indonesia...And she's working on a host of other high alpine summits! She's also just an all-around incredible and inspiring human being, and we're beyond honored to have her on the Hazard Ground Podcast! www.theheroesproject.org | www.thevetsproject.com
Don't call Kirstie a "wounded" warrior ..she's absolutely fierce! She's cover model of the 2017 Body Issue of ESPN the Magazine, she will snowboard in the 2018 Paralympics and she plans to conquer the seven highest peaks on Earth!! Hear Kirstie Ennis chat with Connecting Vets, Eric Dehm.
