How long have you been DJing? Since 2017 I think! Why did you get into it? I like to party and listen to good tunes while I do it. What events have you played? I started playing at house parties then was invited to play at Monk's with Chaddabox & Friends. In 2019 a group of close friends and I decided to throw our own mini festival and we named it Grease Camp 2012. We have hosted our Fest 5 times since it began. Grease Camp was invited to play and eventually host a stage at Forest Creatures in 2023(?). Most recently i played at Funkit Coffee in Missoula and it was such a fantastic event! Where do you live (generally)? Missoula, MT. Where are you from originally? Flagstaff, AZ. What inspires you to DJ? I really enjoy the ability to create a mood or vibe in a room or campsite full of people. Seeing people dance and smile during my sets is the best feeling. What genres are in your mix? Tech House, Bass House and Minimal Tech Can you tell us a bit about your mix? I was testing out some new genres with this one. I think it's perfect to play at your next house party. For this episode, we asked show favourite Mojaxx to return and to talk about a subject that might surprise some listeners: DJing with 45s. Henry Chalfant is an American photographer, videographer, and sculptor best known for his pioneering work chronicling New York City's graffiti and hip-hop culture.Beginning in 1977, Chalfant started photographing graffiti on the subway cars of New York City, capturing hundreds of ephemeral artworks by legendary writers such as Lee, Dondi, Skeme, Blade, Cap and Seen. His technique, shooting from one position while the train moved, allowed him to create single, highly detailed images constructed from multiple exposures, setting a standard for graffiti documentation worldwide. Over his career, he amassed an archive of more than 1,500 photographs that preserve a visual record of a fleeting urban art movement. Chalfant co-authored Subway Art with Martha Cooper, a seminal book often referred to as the “Bible” of graffiti, and later co-authored Spraycan Art, which documented the global spread of the phenomenon. In 1983, Chalfant co-produced Style Wars with director Tony Silver, a groundbreaking PBS documentary that explored the battle over public space between the city's authorities and its graffiti writers, while also highlighting the parallel rise of breakdancing, MCing, and DJing. Style Wars became the first major film to capture hip-hop culture in its infancy, giving a global audience a look at the voices, rivalries, and creativity of New York youth. It went on to win the Grand Prize for Documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival, cementing Chalfant's role as both participant and historian in the culture's early years.Today, his photographs are housed in major exhibitions and collections worldwide, including retrospectives like Art vs. Transit, 1977–1987 at the Bronx Museum, ensuring his legacy as the preeminent visual chronicler of New York's graffiti and hip-hop era.

Nick was the publican at The Gun, a much-loved Hackney institution that recently closed its doors – more on that here for those who have been living under a rock. Nick's excellent Netil radio show can also be found here. Casper, is based in Clapton and was the music programmer for Camden institution The Lock Tavern where our paths originally crossed – most of the time being kicked out whilst DJing. Casper's shared stages with Justice, Jeff Mills, Helena Hauff, Daniel Avery and many more and is also known for his long-running BleeD events via which he collaborated with labels like Blackest Ever Black, PAN and Downwards. Both share a love for “v lo-fi early eighties sound, kosmische, post-punk and scuzzy electronics,” with Nick's influences ranging from 80s TV themes and Giorgio Moroder to The KLF, while Casper was shaped in his youth by electronic acts like Leftfield, Underworld, and William Orbit with DJ Hell's International Deejay Gigolo Records becoming a huge influence later on. Their sound sits between post-punk and the electronic… so with that in mind let's give it a listen shall we? Mark Williams is a veteran that has paid his dues over more than two decades on the scene as a DJ and producer. Since the 80s, when he started his career at UK hot spots like the Ministry of Sound and Final Frontier, he has been laying the groundwork for his future success. His production work has also gained him acclaim the world over and he has released a staggering catalogue of quality tracks on some of the most respected techno labels in the world including: Tortured, Dark House, Pure Plastic, Phont, Primate, and Carl Cox's Ultimate Trax imprint, to name a few. In addition to releasing on other labels, Mark also has his own imprints: Artificial Vinyl, Real Sessions, Macumba and Real Vinyl. Mark has also gained worldwide recognition with his skilful and distinctive DJing style. Mixing tribal, tech house and techno on three decks and CDJs, his rocking performances have helped him to develop a strong fan base and facilitated gigs in places like Spain, Turkey, Slovenia, Japan, Brazil, Colombia, Macedonia, and Sweden. His first major tour was in 1998 when Mark was asked to join Carl Cox on his “World Wide Ultimatum Tour.” In 2000, Mark became a resident at a club night called “Damage” in Dublin and later that year he supported Billy Nasty on his “Torture Chamber World Tour.” 2003 found Mark on his first “Ingoma Tour” with Ben Sims which culminated in a now legendary party at the Loft Club, Barcelona, the weekend of Sonar. In 2004, Mark and Ben set out for another tour to promote Mark's debut album, “A Point in Time” on Ingoma. 2005 was another banner year, with Mark playing at clubs, parties and festivals around the world including a set for more than 40,000 people at the Monegros Festival in Spain. 2005 also saw Mark bringing his sound to radio. The “Concept Show” (www.conceptshow.com) is a monthly broadcast that Mark co-hosts with Macedonian DJ Goran Kan. Some of the past guests have been Mark Broom, Paul Mac, Ben Sims, Cari Lekebusch, Oscar Mulero and DJ Bone. From the studio to the DJ booth, Mark Williams is one of the brightest stars in the world of techno and his list of accomplishments is impressive and ever growing. In 2007, Mark has teamed up with Paul Mac to provide a new way of presenting his music using a combination of three turntables, 2 CDJs and a laptop running Ableton. Sou Tai are intending to fuse their customary sounds to create something new and fresh. The addition of Ableton to the standard setup enables the use of custom edits of classics and to be able to drop all manner of surprises into the mix. Mark has also found time to create a masterpiece of an album that expresses all the sides of his musicality. His love for tribal, Detroit techno and house music shines through in his album “You can't hide what you truly feel” (out later this year) for the label Subject Detroit. So far Mark has soared to new heights, with Sou Tai closing the Awakenings party in Holland to outstanding reactions from the crowds. With Sou Tai riding high the pair have had some superb gigs such as the one at Spanish super club Fabrik, and Mark has now found himself back playing in much loved Japan Tracklist via -Spotify: bit.ly/SRonSpotify -Reddit: www.reddit.com/r/Slam_Radio/ -Facebook: bit.ly/SlamRadioGroup Archive on Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/slam/ Subscribe to our podcast on -iTunes: apple.co/2RQ1xdh -Amazon Music: amzn.to/2RPYnX3 -Google Podcasts: bit.ly/SRGooglePodcasts -Deezer: bit.ly/SlamRadioDeezer Keep up with SLAM: https://fanlink.tv/Slam Keep up with Soma Records: https://linktr.ee/somarecords For syndication or radio queries: harry@somarecords.com & conor@glowcast.co.uk Slam Radio is produced at www.glowcast.co.uk
In 1984, the Bronx brought the boom box to the big screen with Beat Street, a film that didn’t just ride the hip-hop wave—it helped define and export it. The Beat Street soundtrack is a time capsule of early hip-hop and electro-funk, capturing the birth of a movement before it was fully commercialized. Released by Atlantic Records, this album wasn’t just background music—it was the culture. The album features legendary contributions from Grandmaster Melle Mel & the Furious Five, Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force, The System, Juicy, and Arthur Baker, among others. Each track highlights a different element of the hip-hop universe: from DJing and breakdancing to graffiti and street storytelling. Standout tracks like “Beat Street Breakdown” by Melle Mel paint vivid lyrical murals of life in the city, while “Frantic Situation” by Soulsonic Force lays down a pulse-pounding, futuristic vibe that made dance floors shake from the Bronx to Berlin. This soundtrack helped introduce the four pillars of hip-hop to the mainstream—making Beat Street a cornerstone not just of music, but of cultural education. Whether it’s breakbeats, synth-laced funk, or early rap poetics, this vinyl spins with history and rhythm. Beat Street isn't just a soundtrack—it's a sonic blueprint for hip-hop’s global explosion. For our Soundtrack Summer series, this album reminds us where the culture started and how vital music was in telling those early stories. It's a soundtrack with soul, struggle, and street smarts—straight from the boogie-down Bronx.

In the 1930s, musical Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton identified the influence of Latin American rhythms like the habanera in jazz, as a sonic “tinge” that fundamentally shaped his style as a stride pianist. In the Seventies, disco presented its own Latin tinge. The Latin American and Latino influence on 1970s New York disco extended far beyond the familiar narratives of the Paradise Garage and Studio 54, creating vibrant spaces that celebrated cultural fusion and community. Clubs like the Ipanema Discotheque, Copacabana, and Roseland Ballroom became crucial venues where Latin rhythms, Brazilian beats, and Caribbean sounds mixed with emerging disco to create something entirely new. These spaces, often overlooked in mainstream disco histories, were essential to the genre's evolution—places where the infectious energy of Latin music met the innovative production techniques of American dance music. The DJs who commanded these dance floors brought not just technical skill but cultural knowledge, understanding how to weave together the musical traditions of their homelands with the cutting-edge sounds emerging from New York's studios and clubs. In the fourth episode of Season Two of Soundscapes NYC, hosts Ryan Purcell and Kristie Soares welcome DJs Ronnie Soares and Luis Mario Orellana Rizzo to explore the Latin American contributions to New York's disco revolution. Soares, born in Brazil and arriving in New York as a teenager, became a DJ by accident in 1974 when asked to spin a Brazilian night at the French club Directoire. Though initially a dancer, he quickly became resident DJ at the famed Ipanema Discotheque and went on to create "Midnight Disco" at Roseland Ballroom—the first club in the city to hold 5,000 people. Rizzo began his career at the very inception of club culture in 1969-70, learning from DJ Francis Grasso before working at legendary venues including Cork & Bottle and Copacabana. As the first DJ to tour nationally and internationally, Rizzo helped spread dance music globally while founding Legends of Vinyl, an archival project celebrating the art of DJing.
