First Deb Wolfe tackles the many problems of a dog called Daisy who jumps up on people, poops on the floor, wails when alone and won't come when called. Daisy was well behaved until recently and Deb tells her owner how she can get back on track plus expands this advice to help everyone with a dog who can't be alone, jumps on people or poops inside. Daisy also has extreme fear of the car which was alleviated completely when the owner followed Deb's advice on a previous show to partner Daisy with a car loving dog for short happy park trips, but now Daisy won't get in the car alone and that other dog isn't available always. When to free feed when not to free feed and how to help a puppy learn not to food fight, plus how to deal with a grass easting dog who has a troubled tummy. The jumping up dog is a rude creature that doesn't get the love and attention and playtime he should so let's teach our dogs to sit for attention especially from children and that way he can be a polite playmate that is always welcome and never scolded. Billie uses 4 scientific studies on dog cognition to explain why we need a method grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy to address a common unwanted behavior in dogs over 6 months. In this episode we explore four cognitive abilities by introducing the studies which prove dogs have these abilities. I discuss how these abilities, although considered positive, can cause common unwanted behaviors and why suppressing these skills can increase the unwanted behavior.Memory, Emotions, Object Permanence, Object Differentiation, Dexterity, and the ability to understand that an action has a result are some of the recent trends in scientific studies. If dogs can think cognitively, and their behaviors, whether considered "good" or "bad" (wanted or unwanted) are a result of these skills, we need to harness these skills to understand these behaviors. By remaining under the Operant Conditioning umbrella (positive reinforcement and balanced training), we simply cannot harness their cognitive abilities, which explains why addressing these behaviors is often challenging or impossible. NOTE: You do not need to be a scientist or a certified dog trainer to understand the info in this episode. Hello Dog Lovers! Thanks for tuning in! I’m excited to chat with our guest today, Doug Poynter, who has been helping dogs and training people for over 25 years. In his experience almost all Dog Behavior Problems can be traced back to a human/owner issue. Doug is passionate about teaching people the humane, gentle methods he uses that actually work to change their dogs’ behavior!Doug, Separation Anxiety is a pretty common issue right? What are some of the signs of separation anxiety?Do puppies get separation anxiety the same as dogs that are adopted later in life?I would have to think that for owners that don’t have the time, money or patience to work with an afflicted dog, that they just give the dog up for adoption or maybe even worse…like euthanizing? Can you explain why punishment is ineffective, inappropriate, and will only exacerbate the behavior? What’s the difference btw distress vs anxiety? And is it true that there is a difference btw isolation and separation? So, how can you condition a dog to accept being left alone?Do relaxants such as Rescue Remedy, CBD or aromatherapy help? What’s the time limit that a dog can be left alone?SPECIAL OFFER: For the first 11 listeners to sign up for Doug’s Separation Anxiety Course, you get the video course + 30 min phone or video conference consult with Doug for $37 total (a $197 value)www.betterdogbehaviornow.com and use the code WOL to get the $130 discountFB: @betterdogsnowWe appreciate our sponsor: MODERNBEASTUse discount code WOL for 20% off your entire purchase! Thanks for Listening! Thanks so much for tuning in again this week. A lot of dogs have been adopted from shelters during the coronavirus pandemic, and a lot of first time pet owners are still in the 'getting to know you' phase with their new fur babies. So how do you know if a new or different behavior is just a personality quirk, or if your dog could benefit from some kind of professional attention? Dr. Carlo Siracusa is an Associate Professor of Clinical Animal Behavior and Welfare at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He joins KYW In Depth to talk about a new telehealth program for dog behavioral issues at Penn Vet and to give some great advice for new pet owners, like to make sure that we're not putting too much pressure on our pets to be the surrogate for our missing social lives.
This week, listen in as Brett talks about common dog behavior problems, and gives his professional take as a dog trainer on their causes and how to solve them.
