In this episode, we break down three common mistakes dog owners make that can lead to behavioral challenges. Many people give affection at the wrong time, unintentionally reinforcing anxiety or excitement. Others don't provide enough mental stimulation, leaving their dogs bored and frustrated. Lastly, too many owners wait too long to seek professional help, allowing bad habits to become ingrained. We discuss how to avoid these pitfalls and set your dog up for success. Listener Question: A listener asks how to help a dog that gets easily overwhelmed by other dogs. We share strategies for building confidence, creating positive experiences, and setting up controlled social interactions. A violent attack by a dog on livestock in East Clare has prompted Clare's County Dog Warden to once again urge people to rein in their pets. A German Shepherd is understood to have killed five sheep while injuring several others after entering a field in Garraunboy in Killaloe in recent days. The dog's owner has subsequently put the animal down and has reimbursed the farmer for the lost sheep. Frankie Coote says at all times of the days, dogs should be kept under control to prevent similar vicious incidents.
A Clare farming representative claims irresponsible dog owners aren't just risking the lives of livestock but their own lives as well. The Irish Farmers' Association has launched its 'No Dogs Allowed' campaign for 2025 which is pushing for dog owners to be "confronted about their failure to take responsibility for the actions of their pets". Among the measures being sought are the full enforcement of microchipping and licensing obligations of dog owners, and the granting of additional powers of enforcement to dog wardens. Feakle-based Chairperson of the Clare branch of the IFA Stephen Walshe says allowing dogs into fields with livestock creates extremely unsafe conditions for all present.
Francie Gorman, IFA President, discusses the call on dog owners to have greater responsibility for their pets and not to have their dogs loose when out for a walk.
The Auckland Council proposal would see some off lead parks become on leash only, as well as further restrictions on dogs running free at some beaches. It wants to improve safety and protect wildlife. But the move's created a divide, Madills farm in Orakei is a popular reserve just blocks back from the beach, the former dairy farm has a network of paths around sports fields, and currently has a significant off leash dog area. But its one of the parks ear marked for changes. Dog owner Claudia Elze is among those fighting the plan, she spoke to Lisa Owen.
Dog owners are chewing over a proposal that would see significant changes to Auckland dog walking rules. Auckland Council is recommending some areas in 14 regional parks and 64 local parks become completely dog-free, as well as creating new off-leash areas. The changes could also see further restrictions on dogs running free on beaches. Dog Owner and social scientist Marie McEntee spoke to Lisa Owen.

Supposedly there are three types of dog owners. What type are you?
This week we have Molly Purcell on to share her adventure of adopting a rescue puppy named Juniper, who has become an all-around sport dog. Molly and Juniper came to Heather for puppy training and Heather quickly saw the potential for Juniper to be a sport dog. Additionally, Heather was able to see that a confident, high energy, intelligent dog like Juniper was going to need a constructive outlet. So, although the Purcells never anticipated doing much more than the average pet owner in terms of going for walks/runs, Juniper has now trained in toss and fetch disc, fast cat, barn hunt, dock diving, and scent work. Molly shares that even though Juniper has big feelings and can be reactive, dog sports has been a safe outlet for her. Molly really sees dog sports as an important enrichment tool that can provide the needed environment and stimulation for a well rounded dog. Sports also allows Juniper to be the best family member she can be by allowing her to exercise her mind and her body. However, it's not only about the dog, Molly is also having a great time participating in dog sports and making a new community of friends. It's equally important that both dog and owner are having a great time and to find a sport or sports that provides enrichment for both ends of the leash. Don't forget to review, subscribe, and share! How the devil are you lovely Bookshelvers?!The dust has now settled after another fabulous DOGX and with Nat away on her holidays and corrin run off her feet it falls to Steve to host this episode SOLO (what could go wrong?). Luckily Nat and Corrin were around when we interviewed the wonderful, awesome, trail blazing human that is Gwen Bailey about her book The Perfect Puppy. We discuss her journey in dog training, the evolution of her book 'The Perfect Puppy', and the changes in training techniques over the years. She reflects on her experiences in kennels, the importance of communication with dog owners, and the impact of her work on the dog training landscape. The team and Gwen also delve into the complexities of dog training, discussing the challenges of reaching puppy owners, the impact of educational resources like books as well as the flexibility of training curriculums, and the significance of consent-based handling. We sing from the rafters about the importance of collaboration among training organisations and explore the fundamental qualities that make a good dog trainer. On top of all that we have a segment of interviews Steve did running around at lunch time at DOGX (where he mentions potatoes at least 500 times). Enjoy!Gwen Facts:Gwen worked for a leading UK national animal welfare charity from 1988-2002 and pioneered the use of dog behaviour knowledge in the rehoming of unwanted animals. She was the first person to be appointed by a national animal welfare charity as a full time Animal Behaviourist, eventually heading a team of behaviourists.Gwen has successfully solved behaviour problems in thousands of rehomed dogs, helping to prevent dogs with behavioural problems being passed from home to home and improving the rehoming success rate.Gwen has lectured at national and international conferences, run training courses for staff at animal charities around the world and has written many books & education leaflets. She is a past Chair of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and a past Trustee for Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.In 2003, Gwen founded and now runs Puppy School, a large network of professionally-trained puppy tutors which is a Practitioner Member of the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. Puppy School tutors have collectively helped to have a positive training impact on more than 100,000 puppies and their owners, and continue to run excellent classes around the country.
