In the previous Daily Strides Podcast episode and post, I spoke about 5 ways that you, the person lunging, might be struggling. In this post, I want to explore this from your horse's perspective. Riding is a team sport, lunging is the same. If your horse does not understand the concept, the questions, or the expectations around lunging, he will struggle... And you will most likely as well! Here are 10 reasons that your horse might be struggling with lunging and why this is blocking any progress for you both in using this method in your work together. They often communicate through their behaviors. It's important to take the time to try and understand why your horse is reacting or responding the way he is. When you can figure out what's going on, you can help him to understand lunging. Addressing any of the struggles that show up will require clear, consistent communication, patience, and commitment with time to building your horse's confidence and understanding. This way, lunging can become a really helpful part of both of your journeys. Hands up if, at some point in your riding journey, you've been guilty of thinking that lunging was a simple matter of your horse going in circles. Don't feel bad, I've been there too. Most riders have, and so many still are! Lunging is so much more than just running in circles. It is an amazing way to connect with your horse and compliment or continue with your training when riding.  Like most worthwhile things, it takes time, practice, and improving your skills to get the most from lunging. It's not something that just magically 'happens'. Between getting tangled in the lines to missed communication between you and your horse, lunging is an art. It's like riding. So when you approach it that way, you can begin to improve :) In this episode and post, I will focus on 5 common challenges that riders have when it comes to lunging. Now, Obviously, I say riders; I mean 'lungers', as in you on the ground in the circle with your horse trying to lunge :) Read the Full Article & Listen HERE https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1349-5-reasons-youre-struggling-with-lunging-part1   Stop Struggling with Lunging! We take a deep dive into laundry and hark back to the days of washing lines and a pole - how we love a good drying day. It turns out Penny is injured because she has been exercising - lunging specifically, I knew exercising was a trap - far safer not to bother! The old shakti mat gets a mention. And yet again, Penny has messed up with time telling and dates - we need help, does she even look at a clock? We don't even know why the clocks go back or forward - there's much debate around the reasons why! We get a run down on bulb planting -what, where and when! Neither of us are big on Halloween so it kind of passes us by, but Penny is all in for Elf on the bloody shelf. The great how to say 'almond' debate continues (Penny says it WRONG!) And please note we banished the dogs and this episode is relatively snort free...So, if you fancy it, pull up a chair and join us for a delightfully irreverent chit chat about life and all its random tangents - bring a cuppa. How to Manage a Dog Lunging on Leash By Stephanie Gibeault, MSc, CPDT Updated: Sep 22, 2021 | 5 Minutes How to Manage a Dog Lunging on Leash – American Kennel Club   Do you dread taking your dog for a walk because they lunge at other dogs, other people, or objects like cars or skateboards? Maybe they bark or growl too. Walking an out-of-control dog is both physically and emotionally exhausting. It's tempting to avoid walks altogether, but then your dog isn't getting the mental stimulation and physical exercise they need. So, what do you do? Read on for tips to manage and improve your dog's lunging behavior. Understand Why Dogs Lunge Dog experts often label dogs who lunge and bark during walks as “leash reactive.” A reactive dog is one who becomes overly aroused by normal situations, and a leash reactive dog is one who behaves that way on leash. But what causes this behavior? There are three possible motivations for lunging. The least likely is aggression. Although rare, some dogs truly want to do harm. Fear is a far more common motivator. Using the “I'll get it before it gets me” strategy, dogs lunge to try to make the feared person, dog, or other object go away. Finally, your dog might be excited to approach the person, dog, or object, but because the leash is preventing that, they become frustrated and lose emotional control. You need to take all these motivations seriously, but it's important to understand which one is driving your dog. For example, if your dog is frustrated, lessons in emotional self-control come in handy. If your dog is fearful, building self-confidence is key. However, regardless of the reason for the lunging, some of the basic management tools and treatments are the same. Manage Your Dog's Behavior It's important to prevent your dog from lunging because every time they do, they're practicing the behavior and developing a self-reinforcing habit. And the firmer the habit, the harder it will be to change. But how do you prevent lunging? First, never punish your dog for this behavior. You will only exacerbate the problem. Your dog will associate the punishment with the other person, dog, or object which will strengthen their fear or jack up their frustration. Second, use the correct equipment for walking. A buckle collar can put a lot of pressure on your dog's throat when they lunge. A front-clip harness is a better choice. It will put the pressure on your dog's chest and help turn them back toward you when they spring forward. A head halter (also called a head harness) is another option for a leash-reactive dog. It loops around your dog's nose and allows you to control their head like the reins of a horse. However, many dogs need help adjusting to a halter and they can damage their necks if they hit the end of the leash with too much force. To prevent that, you can clip one leash to their buckle collar and another to their halter, so the collar leash takes the force during lunges and the halter leash gently turns your dog's head. Finally, be proactive. Plan your walks for times when your dog is unlikely to encounter any triggers (the people, dogs, or objects that cause the lunging to occur). That might be late at night or with the sunrise. Also choose the quietest route. And always be on the lookout for triggers so you can keep your dog far enough away that they don't react. That might mean taking evasive action like crossing the street or making a 180-degree turn. If you can distract your dog before they notice the trigger, even better. Constantly monitor the environment and your dog's body language so you can predict lunging before it occurs and act accordingly. Change Your Dog's Emotional Response Management will prevent your dog from practicing lunging, but it won't improve their behavior or ease their emotional state. For that, try desensitization and counterconditioning. This technique will change your dog's emotional response from negative to positive (in the case of fear-based or aggressive reactivity) or from out-of-control excitement to calm (in the case of frustration). The trick is to get your dog in the presence of their trigger but far enough away they don't react. This is known as below-threshold intensity. That could be 10 feet, or it could be 40. And different triggers might have different distances. Once you have your dog below threshold, pair the trigger with high-value rewards they would do anything for, like strips of meat, cubes of cheese, or a chance to play with their favorite toy. You want your dog to build a positive association between the wonderful goodies and the trigger. Start the process with your dog on leash. Wait for them to notice a trigger then immediately present a reward. When they glance at the trigger again, offer another reward. Continue as long as the trigger is present. With enough repetition, your dog will eventually glance at the trigger then turn right back in your direction, as if to say, “I saw it, now where's my treat?” This tells you that your dog has realized the trigger makes the reward happen, so the positive association is being formed. Now you can move a tiny bit closer to the trigger and repeat the process. The goal is to slowly reduce the distance between your dog and the trigger until they are within a few feet or less, all while keeping your dog under threshold. Then duplicate the entire procedure again with a new dog or person. Continue to repeat with as many examples of the trigger as necessary to convince your dog that their trigger makes great things happen. As a result, when they see any trigger, they will look to you for a reward instead of lunging. Try your best to control the environment during this process. You don't want a dog or stranger sneaking up and putting your dog over threshold. Instead, enlist the assistance of friends so you can coordinate a training plan using them or their dogs as the trigger. You can also try positioning your dog at a set distance from a pathway or street so you can predict passersby but control how far your dog is from them. Teach Your Dog an Incompatible Alternative Behavior You can also teach your dog to perform a behavior that is incompatible with lunging. For example, they can't lunge towards another dog and turn to look at you at the same time. If you heavily reward this alternative behavior, your dog will eventually choose to do it in place of lunging even when their trigger is close by. Some great choices include “Watch me” (where your dog looks at your face), “Touch” (where your dog targets something with their nose), or “Find it” (where you drop treats at your feet for your dog to find). These are easy to teach and easy for your dog to do even when they are emotionally aroused. And more importantly, they redirect your dog's gaze from the trigger to you. Whichever behavior you choose, make sure your dog loves to do it. Start training in a quiet environment without distractions and pile on the treats. This will show your dog how easy it is to get rewarded for the new task. Next, build distractions into your training. Then add the trigger at a below-threshold distance. When your dog looks at the trigger, ask for the replacement behavior. Shower them with treats when they obey. Finally, ask for the new behavior while slowly moving closer and closer to the trigger. If your dog reverts to lunging, you've moved too far, too fast. Eventually, rather than lunging, your dog will see the trigger as a cue to do the new behavior and earn a reward. Know When to Get Help For some dogs, you might be able to work through these techniques on your own and achieve great success in a matter of weeks. For other dogs, it's advisable to get help from an animal behaviorist or a professional dog trainer with leash reactivity experience. Your dog might also benefit from a consult with a veterinary behaviorist. If your dog is too worked up to learn, medication can control their arousal levels during training allowing them to make more progress. Lunging on leash can usually be modified into more polite and acceptable behavior. At the very least, you can minimize your dog's outbursts with good management. It takes patience and dedication to your dog and the training protocols, but walks can eventually be stress-free for both you and your dog.

MTB Specific Exercises You Might Not Be Using…But Should

The term “MTB Specific Training” gets thrown around a lot but what does it really mean? At its core, it means using a training program that helps you ride faster, longer and with more skill. While the most “MTB specific” thing you can do is to actually ride your bike, there are certainly things you can do off of the bike that can help. In the gym this takes the form of strength training that improves your strength and movement quality in ways that help your riding. Strength is one of the more general physical attributes, meaning that what works for an athlete in one sport will generally work for another. About 80-90% of what you do with an athlete will be the same from sport to sport but there are some MTB specific things you can do to enhance your results. And no, this doesn't mean using light loads and high reps because you need to build more endurance. In general, getting stronger in the 2-4 sets X 5-10 reps range will get you what you need. You can benefit from time spent outside of this range but this should make up the bulk of your strength training. You should also focus on the basic movement patterns of Push, Pull, Squat and Hinge. But once you have the basics covered there are some exercises that will help your MTB specific results. You can stream this episode or download the MP3 file by clicking the link below. You‌ ‌can‌ also find the podcast ‌on‌ ‌‌Itunes‌,‌‌ ‌Podbean‌,‌‌ ‌‌Spotify‌‌ ‌‌and‌ ‌all‌ ‌other‌ ‌major‌ ‌podcasting‌ ‌platforms.‌ ‌ Show Notes: Windmill If there was one exercise that I wish every mountain biker would add to their program it is this one. This movement is the core movement pattern behind cornering on your bike and the #1 reason that most riders struggle with this skill is because they lack it. It is also an essential skill for riding switchbacks and, coupled with track stands, would make it much easier for riders to execute this skill as well. You can do it with no weight using a stick on your back. You can also weight it by holding a weight over your head or by using a Steel Mace on your back. I recommend checking out the videos I have posted at https://www.bikejames.com/strength/carving-faster-corners-with-the-stick-and-kb-windmill/ to learn more about how to execute this movement in the most MTB specific way possible because there is a lot of bad instruction around this movement. In general, you are getting into a pedal stance position with your feet and shifting your weight to the back leg while rotating your shoulders as you hinge back. If you do this movement and struggle to keep your weight on the back leg then you are “tipping” over instead of “corkscrewing” your way down, which is how you end up leaning too far inside of a corner and crashing. BTW, the lack of this movement pattern is what has led to the “lean your bike and not your body” advice, which is wrong. You have to lean your body but you have to do it in a balanced way. This is also a great way to work out the differences between right and left cornering that most riders have. I recommend doing 2 sets of 5 reps for this exercise although you can also do the Stick Windmill on a daily basis as part of your mobility plan. 2. Elevated Lunge This is something I started using a few months ago and I really like it for improving a rider's Standing Pedaling ability. It has you using a box that is 6-12 inches high and stepping back into a lunge. It is a cross between a step up and a lunge and it really works on the range of motion in the hip flexors. Lunging is the movement pattern behind Standing Pedaling and elevating your front leg helps build the movement skill of being able to stand up and pedal without rounding the low back to make up for a lack of ROM in the hip flexors. Plus, it targets the glutes a bit more since you are getting more of a stretch at the bottom, which helps with pedaling power and looking good from behind. I recommend doing 2-4 sets of 5-10 reps with this exercise, starting with a 6 inch box and working up to a 12+ inch box as another way to progress the movement. 3. Bent Press This is a forgotten exercise from the history of strength training. It used to be a contested lift in strongman competitions in the late 1800's/ early 1900's but fell out of favor with the popularity of bodybuilding. It is a hybrid exercise that combines the Windmill Movement with a Shoulder Press. You basically have a weight in one arm at the bottom of the Shoulder Press position and then perform a Windmill as you straighten your arm before returning to the upright position with the arm still locked out overhead. Again, check out the video demo I have at https://www.bikejames.com/strength/the-bent-press-for-mtb-how-this-forgotten-exercise-can-improve-your-riding/  This exercise is great for improving your cornering and your shoulder stability. I recommend doing 2-4 sets of 3-5 reps with this exercise. 4. DB Cheat Curl This is the best exercise you can do to improve your MTB specific explosive hip hinge, which is important for manualing, bunny hopping and jumping. You set up with a dumbbell in each hand and your feet shoulder width apart before driving the hips back and exploding back into the starting position, using the momentum to swing - or “cheat curl” - the weights up to shoulder level. You can also do this movement kneeling, half kneeling or standing in a pedal stance. The position of your legs makes this much more MTB specific than the vaunted KB Swing. Check out the video demo I posted at https://www.bikejames.com/strength/db-cheat-curls-for-better-mountain-bike-hip-power/ to see how to do this exercise. I recommend doing 2-4 sets of 3-5 reps to work on explosive power/ Higher reps and sets work on conditioning which has a place but most riders simply need to get more explosive. By adding these exercises into your routine you can make sure that you are getting the most out of your gym time. If you need a program that incorporates these things be sure to check out the Ultimate MTB Workout Program and the 40+ MTB Rider Workout Program. Until next time… Ride Strong, James Wilson

Doggy Dan, why is my dog overexcited? Also, how to calm overexcited dogs? I often get this question from dog owners dealing with dogs that are always all over the place, jumping on the couch, on them, and on other dogs. They bark, run, and lunge all because they are excited… something that causes a lot of stress not only to their owners but to other dogs as well. These overexcited dogs often get shouted at or barked at because they're constantly invading space, always not listening. In other words, these dogs always get into trouble. And who wants that for their dogs, right? You're in the right place if you have an overexcited dog and want to get to the bottom of the issue. If you're looking for ways to calm an overexcited dog, I have important tips. Read on. Key Takeaways Overexcitement in dogs can manifest in various behavioral signs, including incessant barking, hyperactive jumping, pacing, and the inability to remain still. This behavior often arises from underlying issues related to the dog's perception of its role as the pack leader, a lack of physical and mental stimulation, and overstimulating environments. Establishing yourself as the pack leader is crucial to calming an overexcited dog. By taking charge of mealtime, attention, walks, and all aspects of the dog's life, you communicate that you are the one in control, which can help reduce the dog's overexcitement and restlessness. Additional strategies to calm an overexcited dog include providing regular physical exercise and mental stimulation, consistent obedience training to establish a stronger bond and outlet for the dog's energy, and creating a tranquil home environment that includes a safe space for the dog. LEARN HOW TO HANDLE OVEREXCITED DOGS WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE Table of Contents: How to Calm Overexcited Dogs: What Are the Signs to Look Out For What Causes a Dog to be Overexcited? When You Show Leadership, You Calm an Overexcited Dog Apart From Being the Pack Leader, How Do You Calm an Overexcited Dog? How the Dog Calming Code Can Change Your Overexcited Do How to Calm Overexcited Dogs: What Are the Signs to Look Out For Is your dog really just happy or are they starting to show signs of being an overexcited dog? The easiest way to tell is to look at the signs. From non-stop barking to hyperactive jumping, here are some critical signs that you have an overexcited dog who needs help. Sign #1: Incessant Barking (AKA A Dog Who Just Can't Stop Barking Because of Excitement) This dog is relatively easy to spot. An overexcited dog barks at other people or dogs to get their attention. It's like saying, "Hey, I want to play. Notice me! I'm here!" And when attention is not given, the barking gets more and more persistent. An overexcited dog may bark persistently and excessively, often without reason. This non-stop barking behavior is always a manifestation of heightened arousal, and these dogs often continue barking despite attempts to calm them down. In short, simply telling your dog to "Stop barking!" does not really work. Sign #2: Hyperactive Jumping When faced with excitement, a dog might jump uncontrollably, especially when greeting their owners or encountering new visitors. This jumping can become particularly overwhelming, making it challenging for the dog to focus or listen to commands. UNDERSTAND OVEREXCITED DOGS BETTER WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE Sign #3: Hyperactive Pacing When your dog gets their excitement meter through the roof, they often engage in rapid and erratic pacing, making them unable to settle down or relax. Once your dog gets piqued up, they will find it hard to really calm down or tune in. Sign #4: Inability to Remain Still Overexcitement may render a dog unable to remain still, even for short periods. You can see it in how they fidget, shift positions, or show restlessness. Sign #5: Overzealous Playfulness That May Escalate Into Rough or Aggressive Behavior Overexcited dogs might demonstrate excessive enthusiasm during playtime, which can sometimes turn into overly rough behavior or even aggression. Especially when the other dog don't share their excitement! This behavior can result from the dog's inability to regulate their excitement levels, leading to potential behavioral challenges during interactions with other animals or people. What Causes a Dog to be Overexcited? Understanding the underlying triggers contributing to a dog's overexcitement is CRUCIAL in devising the best training plan for managing their exuberant behavior. When you understand the cause of dog overexcitement, it helps you address the issue clearly. You'll also know how to correct this issue in its roots. Reason #1: Your Dog Thinks They're the Leader, Thus the Heightened Energy If you don't establish yourself as the pack leader, dogs will take on that role. And when they do, they will find it difficult to regulate their excitement levels. Without clear guidance and reinforcement of desirable conduct, these dogs may become easily overwhelmed and struggle to remain composed in various situations. (I teach the nitty gritty of how you can combat this through my online dog training program, The Dog Calming Code.) Reason #2: Pent-Up Energy A surplus of unused energy due to insufficient exercise or mental stimulation can contribute significantly to a dog's overexcitement. Always calling rain check on your walks and exercise? Don't! A lack of movement and exercise cause dogs to exhibit restlessness and hyperactivity, making it challenging for them to maintain a state of calmness and relaxation. TEACH YOUR DOG HOW TO SWITCH OFF BY BEING THE PACK LEADER WITH THE HELP OF THE DOG CALMING CODE Reason #3: Overstimulating Environment Environmental factors such as loud noises, crowded spaces, or frequent disruptions can overstimulate a dog's senses, leading to an increase in their overall arousal levels. In such environments, dogs may find it difficult to focus or remain composed, resulting in heightened excitement that manifests through various behavioral cues. And if you, their dog owner, come home with a frenetic, overexcited energy, your dog will absorb that. Reason #4: Lack of Mental Engagement Dogs, especially those with high intelligence or specific breed traits, require regular mental stimulation to prevent boredom and subsequent overexcitement. Without engaging activities or interactive play that challenge their cognitive abilities, dogs may resort to hyperactive behaviors as a means of seeking stimulation and attention. When You Show Leadership, You Calm an Overexcited Dog The very root of overexcitement is this: your dog feels that they are in charge. It's not only the aggressive, fierce dogs who think they run the show… even the hyperactive, overly playful one feels the same. Why? Because they think they're in charge of playtime. They are the leader in their minds, so when they lunge, jump, or bark excitedly to signal to everyone it's playtime, they think everyone should listen. And if the other dogs don't respond as your dog wants them to, they won't stop lunging or jumping at them. You may have already seen this scenario play out in a park. The excited dogs are working up every other pet in the vicinity because they can't stop asserting their authority through overexcitement. What you expect as a quiet, calm, chill day with your dog at the park turns into a bark-fest, with your dog as the instigator. WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE, YOU CAN HELP YOUR DOGS CALM DOWN AND SWITCH OFF The Solution to Helping an Overexcited Dog Calm Down is Simple: Be the Pack Leader Let's go back to the park scene. In the park, some dogs are ABSOLUTELY calm and tranquil and just so in tune with the commands of their owners. So different from your dog with a ranging level 8 energy level! Let me tell you this: the only difference between your dog and the calm dog at the park is this: the latter knows who is in charge. Your overexcited dog gets wired up every single time because they think they are the decision-maker. They decide when playtime is. They decide when to pull the strings of other dogs. They decide on everything! And if you're the decision maker, you can get overwhelmed. And this overwhelm often translates to overexcitement. If you want to remove the factors that cause your dog to display frenetic behavior, become the pack leader who knows how to handle things. Being a Pack Leader: How it Helps Calm Overexcited Dogs When you take the leadership hat off your dog, it will show them that they're not in charge. They're not in control of playtime. They're not in charge of rounding up the animals for playtime. They're not in charge of initiating play. "But Doggy Dan, how can I show my dog I'm in charge?" I have an entire series dedicated to this which you can check here. But let me give you a snippet: When your dog takes control of mealtime, they don't see you as a leader. When your dog thinks they can get attention from you any time they want, you're not a leader in their eyes. When they take over a walk while you're outdoors, they think they're the leader. So when you take charge of EVERY SINGLE THING (food, attention, danger, walks) related to your dog, you're sending a message that you're the pack leader, the one in charge of everything. They don't have to worry about playtimes at the park. Or the dogs that don't play with them. It's a matter that should be dealt with BY YOU. It calms them down! (You can learn more about how to become the pack leader with my online dog training program, The Dog Calming Code™️.) THE #1 ONLINE PROGRAM RECOMMENDED BY 88,000 DOG OWNERS! Apart From Being the Pack Leader, How Do You Calm an Overexcited Dog? Tip #1: Physical Exercise and Mental Stimulation Help your dog diffuse their overexcitement by engaging them in regular physical exercise, such as brisk walks and interactive play sessions. Incorporate mental stimulation activities, like puzzle toys or training exercises, to help channel their focus and promote a sense of calmness. Tip #2: Consistent Obedience Training Establish a stronger bond with your dog through consistent obedience training, introducing commands like "sit," "stay," and "leave it." These aren't just commands for teaching discipline. But they also provide a constructive outlet for your dog's energy. Tip #3: Creating a Tranquil Environment Reduce your dog's overexcitement by creating a tranquil home environment. I would recommend that you build a safe space for your dog. Minimize stress triggers, such as loud noises or sudden disruptions, and implement a regular daily routine that will provide a sense of security and balance in your dog's life. Also very important: check your energy. Your dog can absorb your overexcited energy! WHAT CHANGES OVEREXCITED DOGS? FIND OUT WITH THE DOG CALMING CODE Tip #4: Seeking Professional Guidance If persistent overexcitement poses challenges, seek guidance from a professional dog trainer or behaviorist. Their insights and tailored strategies can assist in managing your dog's hyperactive tendencies. Approach the training process with patience, compassion, and a commitment to gentle leadership to help your dog find inner peace and develop a harmonious relationship with their surroundings. Tip #5: Practice Proper Discipline Maintaining a consistent and gentle disciplinary approach is essential in preventing dog overexcitement. Precise and positive reinforcement techniques, along with establishing boundaries, help dogs understand acceptable behavior, fostering a sense of security and predictability. Tip #5: Safe Spaces and Time Outs Providing dogs with designated safe spaces and implementing time-outs when necessary can contribute to regulating their excitement levels. Safe spaces serve as retreats where dogs can relax and unwind. Time-outs offer powerful opportunities to help you establish rules, boundaries, and expectations. DOG CALMING CODE: HOW YOU CAN BE THE LEADER IN YOUR DOG'S EYES How the Dog Calming Code Can Change Your Overexcited Dog In the dog training world, a lot of trainers know how to excite a dog. However, not a lot know how to calm an excited dog down. And when dogs are wired up, worked up, and constantly on the go, they're always tired, always anxious, always excited and aggressive. This was one of my goals when I created my online dog training program, The Dog Calming Code. I know that a calm dog is the HAPPIEST dog. And I know each dog deserves to just calm down and chill! So if you're on a mission to help your overexcited dog FINALLY calm down, The Dog Calming Code is for you. Learn about the Dog Calming Code here. ~ Doggy Dan

Visit us at shapedbydog.com    How do you know if a breeder is truly reputable? How do I fit a new puppy into my daily routine? Why do some vets say raw food is dangerous for dogs? How do I calm a leash-lunging dog? What's the best way to cure puppy separation anxiety? How do I help my hyper dog relax? These are just a few of your questions I'm answering in today's Ask Me Anything about raising and training brilliant, healthy, joyful puppies and dogs using positive reinforcement.   In this episode I'm asked:   • How to teach self-control to a hyper dog. • How to protect a dog's confidence and your connection when training games fail. • Does training with treats encourage dogs to follow you instead of settling down? • How do I calm a leash-lunging, reactive dog? • Do I make my own raw dog food? • How to train a puppy with separation anxiety? • Can reinforcement-based dog training really be as effective as balanced? • How many times a week do you recommend practicing agility? • What is overtraining in dog agility? • How many different marker words do you use for one dog? • Why do you name dog behavior rewards differently? • Are there dogs that can't learn agility no matter your effort? • How did I bring Prophet to Canada from Switzerland. • Why ‘slap' and ‘push' dogs when playing tug? • How to help a Border Collie pup who lunges at and chases cars. • How do I balance puppy training and a hectic life? • Do you prefer male or female dogs? • When to reduce treat rewards in dog training? • Are breeders registered with the AKC CKC de facto reputable? • What's your take? My vet said feeding raw food is dangerous due to disease risk from infected animals. • What's a good course recommendation for a first-time dog owner who wants to do agility?   Susan Garrett's Online Programs Mentioned Recallers Home School the Dog Crate Games Handling360   Resources:   1. Visit us at shapedbydog.com    I love kids, especially those who are keen on training dogs, so when a 10th grader named Finya sent me some wonderful positive reinforcement dog training questions for a school assignment, I said, “Let's go!” Today I'm answering her questions about shock collars, eCollars, other aversives in agility training, training dog sport champions using only positive reinforcement, plus the importance of mentors, empathy and why dog trainers should keep egos in check for our students. You'll also hear three critical tips to troubleshoot your positive reinforcement training plan when stuck.   In this episode you'll hear:   • My answers and advice for an aspiring positive reinforcement trainer and agility competitor. • The benefits of positive reinforcement dog training over other methodologies. • Why we don't punish or unleash frustration when dogs make mistakes. • My thoughts on which dog training tools and techniques constitute abuse. • Why some people perceive dog agility training as animal abuse. • The importance of empathy for the plight of all sentient beings. • My thoughts on those who employ shock collars, prongs and other aversives. • Why making people feel judged shuts them down to learning. • My checklist for when dog training doesn't go as planned. • The importance of having a respected and trustworthy dog training mentor.   Resources:   1. Rebecca summits Mount Mokuba, and causes a volcanic eruption.  By BEWD4133. Listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories. Giving his arms and legs a momentary stretch, Mokuba hopped up onto the sofa on all fours like a dog. Playfully he crawled over to Rebecca like an eager puppy but once he kept approaching until she found herself lying back on the couch with the teen looming over her. Then that's where she saw him really show his wild side with his hanging member rising directly within her gaze. > “My cock isn't just the size of one you'd find on an animal but it makes me feel like one too,” the boy growled, “When it decides on its mate, I simply can't stop it.” [[MORE]] Stopping was the last thing Rebecca would have ever asked him to do while watching his erection spring to life in full view. It bounced and twitched with the beat of his heart and the pull of gravity as it continued to engorge itself with his primal lust. With veins popping out one after another along his shaft, she moaned inwardly watching the disproportional his beastly dick created with his young, slender figure. It expanded to the size of her forearm with ease and still managed to do a bit more growing that she cursed having forgotten to bring the tools to measure, looking to be even bigger than when she last saw it. As his hands slipped toward her panties upon reaching full arousal, she realized that he was truly prepared to claim her in total right then and there. This was the one thing her mind decided simply could not happen. “Woah, down boy. Easy now,” the girl lifted herself up with him so that they were now seated with his tremendous need throbbing between them, “This isn't Halloween You can't just get the treat without doing some tricks first.” “I'm a ferocious wolf, not some house pet,” he boasted until she tugged on his figurative leash by placing a tiny hand just barely around his burgeoning shaft. “Hush, I have an agreement to keep,” Rebecca cemented her hold on him, “I turned you on, and thus I must deal with it.” “I was ready to deal with it just fine.” “No, it doesn't count if you do all the work. Now shut up and let me have my fun. It won't be the way it was before.” “Will it now?” her touch eased him into a state of acceptance. Now sitting politely before one another, Rebecca reached out both hands to firmly grasp Mokuba's penis and the masculine aura it emanated. Unlike before, she was coming in with both an understanding of the task at hand and the humility it necessitated from her. With alternating hands, she tenderly explored the vast and complete surface area of his distended shaft, admiring its hardened form but allowing her fingers to naturally sink into the spots that permitted it like the underside and foreskin. “Wow… just a handjob…” he spoke with a mild shudder. “I must understand the beast in order to tame it,” she quipped, “It has such a marvelous look and feel to it.” “Haven't you stared at it enough today?” “Not at all, seeing it resting only whets the appetite to see it up and raring to go.” “And what do you think it's raring for exactly?” “That's the best part of it. It's all hard, huge, and fat just for me. You showed me yourself. It means something to have that effect on a cute boy.” “Oh…” he gulped, “I'm glad to have you around as well.” “Really?” she giggled. “Yeah, letting it out on my own watching porn just ain't the same which is what I'd probably be doing now if you hadn't shown up.” “The real thing sure is different, huh?” “Of course it is, it's why you've got your hands all over that cock after all,” he settled more into her continued touch, “It's just irresistible, isn't it?” “Absolutely.” “It's hot to look at for me too,” he grunted, “Seeing how tiny my gargantuan penis makes those hands of yours look.” “Oh, I most certainly see that,” she purred when he swelled even larger to increase the difference, “and all with a shape handmade to ravish my body.” “Only as well as you ravish that dick.” “That is a task I most gladly accept.” With a low rumble beginning to pick up in his throat. Rebecca tended to Mokuba's shaft with every last ounce of know-how she had accumulated thus far. Her palms and fingers dug into the fleshy tender underside, just shy of the furiously engorged tip. His girth had exceeded any point where her digits could easily connect around it so she applied her strokes like a gracious massage along his length. The teen almost began to squirm in her grasp when a command came down. “Uh… My balls…” he grumbled. “Yes?” the girl checked on him eagerly. “My balls!” the boy bellowed this time, “Just… do something with them.” “Ah, certainly,” cupping his scrotum appeared to ease his agitation, “My God, they sure are heavy and full.” Having developed proportionally with his mammoth manhood, even Mokuba's testicles were reminiscent of certain birds' eggs in their size and weight. On their own, they gave Rebecca's palm all that it could handle. However, that only made it more satisfying to roll them in her fingers to watch him fight off a groan. The downside to this was that a lone hand was nigh worthless against his overwhelming member, but the studious girl had far more than just her hands to offer him. “Time to check in on how that taste and smell are coming along,” her face drew closer to his shaft, “Damn, that is so raunchy.” “Just how you like it right?” he tensely watched her tongue roll out in its approach of his loins. “Without question,” Rebecca finally took her first lick of the afternoon, “I wouldn't have it any other way.” This time Mokuba let out his suppressed groan in full with her mouth kissing and licking its way up and down his yearning mass. Her left hand continued to fondle his balls with care while the other kept the tip of his dick in a steady grip. It was a heaven of the sort that the Asian teen had never known, having every substantial inch of his manhood caressed with such astute precision. The burden such an amorous reproductive organ brought to him had never felt lighter or more worth carrying. “Oh Rebecca!” the boy howled, “You get me so fucking excited. That's how you do it. Squeeze that shaft, kiss that cock, and knead those nuts. You're going to make me cum like a horse here!” “I expect no less from a man who's truly hung like one "Then that pussy will be next!” “Will you even fit anymore?” “I'll make it fit once I'm all done shooting my spunk on that adorable face.” “Now that I look forward to,” she grinned sexily. Mokuba's whole body jolted when she moved her lips up from the length of the shaft to wrap around the engorged tip, sliding a third of the way down his meat as her hands maintained control of the base and balls. All the while, Rebecca fervently maintained a routine of worship while popping off of him or her timely breaths of air. “So big!” “The biggest!” “I'll ever see!” “This cock!” “I want!” “Every last inch!” “And drop!” “Of cum!” “In those!” “Fat balls!” “Mokuba!” “I need!” “To have!” “Your monstrous cock!” “Explode!” “For me!” “Oh I will!” he clenched his teeth, “Nobody's ever learned to handle this dick like you have! I'll give you everything it's got and more!” Clamping her lips down in an instant, Rebecca took on the full force of his immediate and fierce eruption. The teen truly pushed the boundaries of what Rebecca could regard as part of a human reproductive system with a spurious ejaculation that stormed out of his penis in surging waves. His voice rang out all the way through with each lively stream he felt being released from his groin. Her face and hands were awash with all that her mouth failed to keep up with, only urging him on to spunk even more. Even so, he offered the top of her head a supportive hand of appreciation as she put up a fight to the very end of his orgasm. “How's that?” he cooed, “Much better than any of those videos, right?” “Definitely,” she gasped for air and tried to lick herself clean as best she could, “Perhaps we should fix that…” “What?” “Nothing, just talking to myself,” the girl pulled herself back together to stand before her male companion now thoroughly bathed in and reeking of his essence. “Oh, that's it,” Mokuba sat himself back up, “That's what gets me going more than anything in the world. Look at me, Rebecca.” Awaiting her eyes as she refocused on him was a boy who had fulfilled his promise not to lose any of his vigor even following such a thunderous climax. He crept his way closer to her, bearing an erection of extraordinary magnitude seemingly unfazed and only further energized from her words and actions just before. Motioning her to share a sudden kiss with him Mokuba pressed his member against her torso in a way that made it look ready to pierce clean through it. “Consider that my way of saying thanks,” he pulled his lips from hers, paying no mind to the taste of his seed still leftover on them. “You're welcome, but what in the world am I supposed to say about that?” she pointed down to and poked at his most savage erection yet. “Just that for once you'll be willing to lie back and let me take charge with this thing.” His proposal was both terrifying and enticing. Mokuba looked as though he could possibly shoot all the way through her pussy to her ribcage, but it also made her feel faint to consider the ridiculous combo of lust and genetics to create such a humongous need in him. She knew that he would break her one way or the other. It was simply left to be determined as to whether it would be in body or mind. “Mokuba…” Rebecca murmured, “If you were to truly thrust that behemoth into me. I don't think I'd make it through in one piece.” “Can you place your faith in me to try?” “Of course, but, assuming you don't bore through me completely, I doubt I'll ever be able to go back to the companionship after this…” the blonde peered into his eyes, “Do you understand what I mean?” “I do,” he nodded for her to remove her underwear, revealing the drenched, glistening folds underneath. “My pussy wants it so much, Mokuba…” she purred with a hand lovingly grazing his shaft, “My very womanhood trembles to partake in such rich, long, thick, throbbing, succulent meat the likes of which it will never come across again. If I last long enough to have you cum inside, sex will likely be ruined for me forever should it be with anyone but you. "I promise, Rebecca,” Mokuba assisted her down onto her back. Seizing the moment, the black-haired teen was quick to grab and spread her legs to check on the space and lubrication he had to work with. In an instant, he yanked his shirt off having gotten far too hot to be wearing it. Even soaked to her core with arousal, it didn't seem entirely possible but he never would have expected it to. With her enduring resolve and approval, he brought his engorged tip down to press against the fleshy lips that provided the opening to her womanhood. “Come on in,” Rebecca waved him closer, “I've taken it before and I can take it again!” “Alright,” her partner firmly set his grip upon her figure, “Here I go!” Lunging his hips forwards, Mokuba plowed his manhood through and into the simmering vaginal flesh of the girl quivering beneath him. With his incredible girth, every inch he inserted proved to make for a tighter fit than the last, but, one-by-one he steadily made his way onwards with gradual shoves in succession. Rebecca's mouth hung open in disbelief at the obscene shape she felt his member driving into her with, contorting her inner walls all around it. It was already farther in than it should have been able to go yet the tug of her canal around his cock continued to draw him in further still. “Oh, it's in so deep! How is it able to go so deep!” she let out the moan she had been restraining herself. “Because that's where you know you want it! the black-haired male heaved, "Almost there, only a few more inches!” “There's nothing few about your inches!” she roared back. Indeed, even Mokuba's last few inches were comparable to the size of a small soda can, but somehow, someway, Rebecca's body would not permit her to reject or refuse any of it. With his member packed in so tight the outline could be seen bulging from her belly, Mokuba barged his way through with his head mashed against her cervix with his meat hungrily enveloped by her inner flesh all the way down to the base where his balls churned with anticipation. He held still at this furthest point until Rebecca could manage to stop trembling before him. “You're like a vice in there, Rebecca,” Mokuba panted, “But I'm absolutely all in there now.” “Yes,” the scholar hissed, “I feel the entire length of you throbbing, rearranging my innards.” “You're so moist and warm, I really want to start moving.” “Yes, please do. Don't worry yourself over me!” The teen pressed on as told. Regardless of her words, there was no way he would've been able to give up such a prime position with such peak-quality pussy. At last, he could bask in the satisfaction of prying open and reshaping Rebecca's at his within his own power. His thrusts started small but escalated in the breadth the more accustomed he got with the force necessary to plow his way in and out of her. “Wow, you look even better than I imagined,” he said just above a whisper. “Ah,” Rebecca still shook with every inch he ran in and out of her, “And just what was it that you were imagining?” “You lying below me stuffed full with my dick,” Mokuba smiled, “God, I love the way you shiver all over every time I make a move.” “I can't help it with a cock like yours. It stretches me in ways I never thought possible. Oh, I'll never be satisfied with anything less now.” “I'd be disappointed if you felt otherwise.” A consistent bevy of moans and groans filled the room as their intercourse proceeded. Each passing minute seemed to raise their voices by another octave. Merely being inside the girl soi became insufficient for Mokuba. He brought his entire body down closer to hers so he could feel her form as much on the outside as within. Rebecca was awestruck by how his member seemed to reach its peak hardness when his chest came to rest atop hers as his hips continued to heave their way into her. “Wow, Mokuba…” she struggled to speak clearly, “You're a more sensitive guy than I would have given you credit for before now.” “I can't help it. I've waited too long for a woman ready and willing to take me like this. You're the best.” “Only because I really feel as though you deserve the best. "Well, I'll do what I can to keep on giving you my best if that's what you really believe.” “I do, Mokuba, let me have it as only you can.” At last, Mokuba set aside any lingering doubts and resolved to let his instincts guide his actions going forward. His hands slid up and around their shoulders as their bodies drew closer than ever before. His firm gaze stared directly into her tender expression, silently begging him to claim as much of her being as he so desired. As such he allowed his chin to lean into the nook of her neck, bringing their bodies into near-total contact as the pressure within her swelled in every manner possible. “Fuck, you make me want to cum all over that monster cock so bad,” the blonde loudly confessed. “Go on. Do it,” her partner requested, “Let me see it. I truly want to.” The Japanese boy pushed his hips forwards to make sure he had every last ounce of meat available held deeply inside her, throbbing against her ways and pressing his tip squarely where her cervix awaited his fertile load. The sheer anticipation was abundant in its own pleasures. Rebecca could feel Mokuba's heart beating through his rigid erection more as clearly as her own racing in her chest. His testicles tingled with glee at having his manhood wrapped so extensively by her hungering canal with no hint of true resistance from them. The joy she displayed in her true awakening as a devout size queen was such that Mokuba took just as much enjoyment from her reactions to his penis as anything he was feeling in the organ itself. He would not be truly fulfilled until he saw her truly get the most out of it. “Come on, Rebecca. Let loose,” Mokuba accelerated, “This dick truly is yours. Relax and show me just what that means to you.” “Oh Mokuba, Mokuba,” her full surrender came as she did. Her orgasm was like an earthquake in her center that spread out like the accompanying tsunami to the rest of her body. Her limbs stiffened before going limp as she could no longer hold her head up straight. Mokuba nuzzled his nose into her neck while his member remained balls deep inside her to experience her climax on his end at its very source. The tunnel of flesh he hard traversed felt ready to cave in on his penetrating appendage, but it was much too firm in its texture and commitment to budge amidst the entirety of her insides undulating around it. Rebecca was left with no option but to ride out the rippling waves as Mokuba demonstrated no intention to finish on anything but his own terms. “How's that?” he clung to her even tighter, “Ah, you look even better than before.” “Like a dream,” Rebecca gasped for air, “Sex with you and your cock. It's as though it can't be real but somehow it is.” “I think I've found my unicorn with you too,” Mokuba repaid the compliment, “To think a girl would cum that hard with this much cock in her. I could get addicted to it.” “I don't want it to just be me. Come on, you cum too, Mokuba.” “I absolutely will and as much as you obviously deserve.” This time, Mokuba lifted himself slightly and planted his arms on the wide sofa to put an extra bit of force into his subsequent thrusts. With her own orgasm subsiding, Rebecca could more clearly focus on the changes his penis was exhibiting within her, continuing to reshape her pussy with its bloating shaft. Her belly felt ready to have him burst out with how wild his erection twitched were getting inside it. She even brought her hands down to press on her lower abdomen to make all of those building sensations all the more distinct and memorable. “It's all yours for the taking, Mokuba. Use it,” the girl instructed, “My pussy is for your relief and enjoyment.” “I will now, and as many times as you want going forward, "he exclaimed, "Thank you for being such a willing partner for a savage beast like me!” “Yes, just like that!” Rebecca shouted straight back, “Cum Mokuba!” Cum he did and in a manner unlike any time before. Pulling her hips as closely to his as he could physically manage, Mokuba pressed to keep every blast of his semen launched point-blank at her helpless cervix. The question of if she had the pill ready for this failed to even remotely factor into his judgment. The virile Asian teen was guided by a seemingly higher calling and awareness of what his most treasured of endowments had been blessed upon him against all odds to do. That task felt paramount compared to anything else in his life, and the girl held securely beneath him looked to be in full agreement as rope-after-rope of his essence poured over her core. “Fuck yes! Fill me up, you Japanese animal!” the ecstasy of having him creampie her nearly brought about a second consecutive orgasm for her. “God damn it, you're so fucking sexy, holy shit Rebecca!” he let out the most satisfying curses of his life. All good things must come to an end, however, and this seemingly endless orgasm proved to be no exception, however. His ejaculation did taper off after a duration several seconds longer than either of them could be bothered to keep track of. Still, even if the pure sex was over, it was still worth it for both of them to savor how the other looked even after all that. “I think we've become something a little more than friends with benefits,” she cheerfully noted, “That was incredible.” “Yeah, it was,” Mokuba closed his eyes to best imprint his present feelings in his mind, “Can't say for sure just what we are now though.” Finally free in more ways than one, the black-haired boy withdrew himself from the aspiring scholar to sit back up at her side. He looked over the stains that their activities had left on the couch, thankful that cleaning the black leather before anyone could see it wouldn't be too much of a hassle. His bubbly classmate getting back up to take her place by his side still held immediate priority though. “I can't lie about it. That was what I most needed today,” she attempted to mimic a bow from his native culture, “Thank you, Mokuba.” It had its benefits for me as well. Don't you worry,“ he chuckled weakly, "Though I suppose it is time for us to do something besides fuck.” “Is it bad that I'm so ready to jump your bones whenever I get any kind of look at that dick?” she inquired sincerely, “Do you even momentarily think of me as being shallow or a whore? Be honest.” “Well, I can't say it's the type of relationship my parents would have envisioned for me…” Mokuba started with a pause, “…But somehow I don't think we'd be sitting here now if that was really all it was.” Rebecca crawled over to accompany him more closely in response to these words as Mokuba put his mind back on the lengthy afternoon that still remained for them. Gradually, they came to remember how they had thrown off all of their clothing onto the nearby furniture and floor and that porn previews were still showing on the TV screen. “I actually have a sense that what we were just doing was more intense than whatever we had left playing on the television,” the blonde reach for her panties “Yeah, I was watching that video before thinking that I could easily outperform any of those guys,” he bragged and triggered a lightbulb in Rebecca's head. “Then why don't we sometime?” the girl popped off an idea. “What do you mean?” “A live video. Me and you doing it at our very best, just once.” “Would you be alright with possibly getting recognized for doing something like that?” “With what I've learned you can do, it's worth the risk to me,” Rebecca decided, “but not today, certain things would need to be prepared first.” “Then should we get back dressed or…” “We're at least a little bit messy and sweaty now. I think we should wash this off first, if only we had a place to do it.” “I might have something available for that,” Mokuba caught the hint. On this occasion, it was now Rebecca leading him along to where she remembered his luxurious, oriental-style washroom awaited. Already nude, a whirlpool bath and spacious shower stall offered a tantalizing choice for where they would get their soak. It was simply a matter of them getting the water going. “Take your pick,” the boy proudly presented the options. “Whichever one you would normally use. Show me more of how you live.” “If you insist…” Mokuba accepted Stepping over to the side, he fired up the jets on the tub with a few button presses and had it quickly filled with a bubbling bath for them to share. In a chivalrous manner, Mokuba offered Rebecca the first choice of where to place herself in the water before taking his seat opposite her in the tub. “Oh, that's nice,” Rebecca delighted in the warmth and pressure of the water, “We should have done this last time.” “Yeah,” he settled himself in as well, “I just typically save this for when I'm a bit closer with a girl.” “So we are close?” the student's face lit up. “About as close as I've ever been with anyone,” Mokuba added. “Thanks, I'm grateful.” “I hope so because I don't think I'll be able to hold it this time.” “Hold what?” Looking just a tad guilty, Mokuba glanced down to the water by his nether regions. Having gone flaccid before they entered, Rebecca's eyes followed along his as member lengthened within the bath before rising all the way up past the surface of the water to stand tall, bobbing between them with the flow of the current. “Oh my,” Rebecca fawned with her face in her hands, “Such endurance.” “It's just too relaxing having it hanging down there with all those jets around,” he sighed, “Especially with a pretty lady sharing space with me.” “Oh, Mokuba, you'll always have all the space you need with me.” she mentally prepared herself all over again, “What would you be doing if I wasn't here though?” “Enjoying the boner,” he confessed plainly, “Admiring the size and feeling the blood surge through it without worrying that someone might see. That is why I normally use the bath on my own.” “It's fun waving that huge thing around, isn't it?” “You bet, though you're the only one to know just how much.” “By the time I'm done, everyone will know about it and be forced to their knees in respect in your presence,” she commented deviously, “Should I be ready to deal with that one too?” “I'm interested to find out what you mean but it sounds a bit counterproductive when we're here to wash off.” “Then that just means I'll have to wash it myself later.” “If that's what you want.” “It'll be my honor,” she beamed, placing her hand upon him to elicit a glorious groan. From that instant, the rest of the afternoon seemed to pass like a wild blur. The girl seemed to recall pumping his member in the bath at one moment and lying by his side in bed the next, the stench of sex between them somehow even more pervasive than from before they had washed. Her nose nuzzled into his cheek, but her hand couldn't seem to stay away from the manhood that made and marked her. “So… Mokuba,” she murmured with a squeeze on him, “Would you be alright if I continue to drop by every once in a while?” “Yeah…” he smirked back with his member perking up in her grasp even as they nodded off together, “I think that just might be some fun…” - To be continued. I hope you enjoy an interview by one of my youngest students, Sarah, who is only 17! Sarah's interview is for her senior thesis and her horsemanship.Sarah did an excellent job asking questions. Lunging is an art, the art of movement and in my method, it's also about the art of connection and synchronicity in heart, mind and body energy. We are all living, energy beings. There is nothing more powerful, magical or healthy than connecting with our horses in heart/relationship, mind/thought and body/movement. My art of lunging comes full circle too and not only teaches you how to develop horses inside out, it includes biomechanics, energy, connection, self-regulation, collection and most of all teaches the rider how to develop the movement they want to ride in their horse and in themselves.I teach all about this and how to start a horse, from the inside out, ground to riding, start to finish, rehab to recovery, novice to pro in my big MasteryMembership Riding Foundation Program https://www.taoofhorsemanship.com/masterymembership. Enjoy!

This is Episode 17 of Season Three and it's time for another Coaches' Corner with Jec and Amy Skinner. They answer a listener question from Lisa, who asks about proper lunging practices. It's a great back and forth, short and to the point. Or I should say points, because there are several.  Before I get to sponsor mentions, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk about a few things I've been up to and pondering. Last week, I traveled to Elko, Nevada, as I've been doing for each year for over a decade. I attended the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, met up with a bunch of horse folks, checked out the great gear shows – where they sell everything from wild rags to ropes to four thousand dollar saddles. This year, a group called the Outside Circle Show held a panel discussion around mental health and substance abuse in the cowboy community. As far as I know, it's the first time this community has done something like this. Panelists told their stories of addiction and pain and the struggle to get help. It's a topic that's dear to me and something I've written about, so it was great to see the conversation get started. So, maybe you are saying, wwaaiitt a minute, Maddy, this sounds like the very warm and fuzzy kind of topic you disdain. What's up with that?  Warm and fuzzies, as we mentioned in Episode 10 of this season, are strategies, practices, ideas, methods, marketing, and proclamations that may indeed serve the human and her need to feel connected and in a relationship, but, in fact, don't serve the horse one bit. Or, even worse, they confuse or neglect the horse. Mental health and substance abuse challenges matter because unwell owners and riders affect their horses in myriad ways. And not everyone is able to leave their stuff, their bad mojo, their violent tendancies, their pain, their reactivity in a handy paddock mailbox before they get with their horse. (My reference is to a fun video that Best Horse Practices Summit presenter Daniel Dauphin shared, in case you're wondering.) If we can become a more supportive, a more listening, a more resourceful community, I think the horses would be better off. So hats off to those starting the conversation. It's overdue, for sure. One more little item -- just a vernacular clarification regarding the use of the term ‘motorcycling' that Amy and Jec mention. That's when a horse falls through a turn. The horse is out of balance and dropping the inside shoulder. Direction and speed become difficult when a horse is motorcycling, Amy described to me.   How to fix it? That's a topic for another upcoming Coaches' Corner and not addressed here. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds.  Forage is chopped, packaged hay. There are times each year when special offers are just an inevitable part of life. Right now is one of those times; I can only imagine how, right now, your inbox is full, full, full, with all of the things!  And some of those things, online horse programs, are just so, well, darn good... Right? Hmmm... Maybe too good?! I think that most of us would agree that knowing how to discern 'all of the things' when it comes to online horse programs and courses can be a bit of a fine art.  Particularly when you're not an expert on the topic of the course or program you're interested in, maybe, investing in.  And this is true for most of us.  After all, we are not going to spend time and money on knowledge or training on things we already are well versed in!  So, in the hope that I can help you a little with all of the decisions regarding what's 'right' for you and your horse...  Here's a quick rundown of the 3 common mistakes I see riders make. As a rider, it is important to always look for ways to keep your schooling work interesting; for you and your horse. One of the ways you can do this is by working on different lunging exercises.  And they don't have to be 'fancy' or complex. In fact, there are a few basic exercises you can begin working on introducing, or refining today that will help you to really begin utilizing lunging as a training tool for you and your horse.  Now, just like riding, it is important that before you dive into 'working' your horse, you take the time to warm up correctly.  I enjoy walking my horse (leading my horse) the 'long way round' to the arena I will be working in.  I use the 5 or so minutes to do a little groundwork on the way. And bonus points if the groundwork sets up, introduces, or relates to what you will actually be working on when lunging your horse.  It is the perfect way to start the conversation.  Read the Rest of the Article and Explore other Resources HERE More Resources:- Free Training to Successfully Get Started with Lunging:- https://stridesforsuccess.com/episode1264-3-lunging-exercises-to-train-your-horse/ Join Connection today and transform your riding journey Lunging for Riding – 4-week step-by-step program to transform your lunging experience Online community for equestrians working on their mindset & fitness Online Community for equestrians focusing on re-schooling horses (and ex-racehorse

Using Lunging to Help Your Horse Build Responsibility

As both a rider and trainer of your horse, one of your responsibilities is to help your horse build responsibility. In order for riders and their horses to take their training further, both sides of the team need to show up and work together. This cannot happen if we, the riders, are trying to control all of the moving parts. And so, this can bring up a few questions for riders... How can I begin to help my horse work 'with' me, rather than just 'for' me? And how can I develop his confidence so that he feels ready to take on some of the responsibility? Now, I believe that the responsible way to do this is to be consistent and invest time. I also think that this part of the learning should be approached in a few different ways. In the saddle, on the ground, and on the lunge or long lines. This way we can both explain, allow, and respond to our horses from lots of different perspectives. And this, in turn, allows them more opportunities to develop their 'responsibility muscle'. Recently I spoke about how to begin doing this while riding. You can read or listen to that article/episode HERE. However, today, I want to dive into a personal favorite of mine; lunging. 3 Groundwork Exercises to Train Your Horse

Just last week, I noticed a rider literally dragging their horse from the stables towards the arena. The rider was about a meter in front of the horse's head. Her face was red with effort! And her horse was literally going nowhere slowly. It occurred to me that so many riders make things really difficult for themselves by not having a few ground rules in place when it comes to their horse and their expectations. And what better place to work on ground rules than on the ground? Beside your horse. Groundwork is an essential part of training your horse. It is where you can set expectations, create boundaries, explain 'rules', and develop partnerships. Groundwork exercises also help you to refine your own skills as a rider. By simply having to figure out a slightly different way to 'say' something to your horse, you get to explore your own knowledge of the subject. So, all of that being said, here are 3 groundwork exercises you can use this week when working with your horse... Time, or the lack thereof, is often the number one thing that keeps riders from training their own horses.  And while time is an essential part of the puzzle in order to develop and grow your horse successfully, often we overestimate how much of it we actually need. In fact, one of the reasons riders often don't have enough time to work with their horse has more to do with a lack of planning and less about a lack of time. So, if you are currently in a season of your life where time seems to always be against you and your horse working together… I have a solution.  Firstly, plan your sessions (more on that just now). And then begin looking for more ‘quality' and fewer quantity ways to train.  Lunging is the perfect solution for riders who want to use the little time they have available to continue working with their horse. Cantering on the Lunge? Here's How to Make it Work…

Daily Strides Podcast for Equestrians

Here's a confession; for years I used to think of cantering while on the lunge as just something I did to ‘finish the session'. It was like something that I could check off a list. There was no intention behind it (only to get it done), And with any cantering happening while on the lunge, there was definitely no thought put into using the time or gait to develop the horse. Which, now, seems so bizarre! Why would I have even bothered with it when there was no set focus or intention?! It really does seem like madness; except for one thing… Every week, I see so many riders making the same mistake. Cantering endless circles while on the lunge – without a single thought about why and what it might achieve or work towards… Transitioning Into the Canter Let's start at the beginning with this one. I love thinking about the similarities between what happens when riding and what happens when lunging. Meaning, if you were to ride a ‘good' transition from trot to canter, what would you consider before ‘asking'? The transition into canter will only be as good as the quality of the trot asking for it – and the quality of the preparations for the ‘ask'. Meaning that the trot must be moving forwards, not running. And the rider (the lunger) must invest a little time, energy, and focus in preparation for the transition itself. Read More... If you have even been at the other end of a lunge line to a horse who is adamant to show you exactly how fast he can go on a circle… You will know all about ‘that' feeling!  The one where every fiber of your being is screaming at you to ‘stop the horse'.  And yet, it feels like there is absolutely nothing you can do!   Intentionally mixing cantering and lunging together is not for the faint of heart!  It often requires nerves of steel – especially at the beginning of the journey…   The good news is that, for those who persist and persevere, the reward is being able to truly use lunging as a tool to develop the canter.  And being able to do so from this wonderful, and unique, vantage point of ‘trainer'.   Read More...   More on this Topic:- FREE TRAINING:- 3 Days to Successfully Getting Started on the Lunge 4 Essentials for Getting Started with Lunging for Riding Handling Your Lunge Line to Avoid Tangles and Enhance Contact 4 Things You're Doing Wrong when Lunging Improving Your Riding Coordination and Aids While Lunging Join Connection today and transform your riding journey Lunging for Riding – 4-week step by step program to transform your lunging experience Online community for equestrians working on their mindset & fitness Online Community for equestrians focusing on re-schooling horses (and ex-racehorse
