In this Film Ireland Podcast, contributor Will Penn chats with Irish-American harpist Joy Shannon, who's preparing to shoot a documentary in Ireland. Her new album In The Forest Singing Sorrowless, released in late November, is inspired by the poetry of J. R. R. Tolkien and features a special collaboration with his great-granddaughter. Unfortunately there are some technical issues with this section that have impacted the audio. Then at 28:56, contributor Dolapo Agunbiade sits down with writer-director Adam Mura to discuss his indie series Midlands Mayhem. From the origins of the concept to the realities of independent production, they delve into the making of the show and look at what audiences can expect.Listen now on SoundCloud, Apple, Spotify, Acast and Amazon, or subscribe to Film Ireland wherever you get your podcasts.https://www.filmireland.net/podcast-midlands-mayhem-writer-director-adam-mura-harpist-joy-shannonMidlands MayhemJared Ennis is a disaffected young man working in a scrapyard in the midlands of Ireland. In years prior, Ennis was a hard-partier among a group of young people in the town who frequently drink, do drugs and engage in petty crime, branding themselves The Sesh Council. Ennis is contacted by Council member and former friend Tristan ‘Canner' Corcoran, who reveals their acquaintance, Fearghal, has been murdered. The two meet with Jessica ‘Seshica' Hegarty, the Grand Elder and leader of the Sesh Council, who tries to bring Ennis back into the fold to investigate the murder. A local young man and former classmate of Ennis, Mad Jack Wensleydale, takes credit for Fearghal's murder, vowing to rid the midlands of the crime and violence that the Council brings. It's made clear to the Council that he's not working alone. The two main creative minds behind the project were Adam Mura and Shane O'Baoill, who met studying film at college. They produced the series together with Adam in the director's chair and Shane serving as the Director of Photography. Adam went to school in the Midlands and most of his friends were from the area. This included two of the main characters portrayed by William Ennis and Tristan Canning.Joy ShannonJoy is an Irish harpist and singer whose ethereal and haunting songs come from depths of Irish folklore. Her melodies evoke images of witch's lairs in dark woods or the distant echoes of the voices of spirits in the ancient places of the Irish countryside.Joy Shannon's newest album release In the Forest Singing Sorrowless is inspired by author J.R.R. Tolkien's poetry, with Shannon's original music accompanying Tolkien's wonderful words. Shannon decided to create this album during a personally challenging year, when she went through medical treatments for breast cancer. Tolkien's works have always been an inspiration for Shannon, especially to have hope and purpose at the darkest times, so the recording of this album carried her through a difficult time. The resulting album is a mystical dream-walk through Tolkien's landscapes, through the magical lens of Shannon's intimate harp and vocals.Last year, Shannon released an album called An Chailleach, or Irish for the crone or elder goddess. For this album, Shannon delved into the lore of the dark wintertime goddess of Ireland, with stark and stunning compositions. Shannon's fascination with ancient lore, led her to this year's album, as Tolkien's works are similarly inspired by ancient mythologies. Through her signature dark folk, full of longing and a mystical air, her music pairs perfectly with the words of Tolkien. The record, which has been met with critical praise, was composed while Shannon was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Shannon is set to head to Ireland in 2026 to shoot a new documentary titled The Cailleach, based on her own life experiences. Kyle Hegarty is a gifted, story-centric writer, as evidenced by his first book, The Accidental Business Nomad. Kyle's newest book describes the sales recession B2B sales teams are facing and offers remedies to overcome sales ineffectiveness rooted in an outdated playbook. The book is Sales Punks, and in this easy-to-follow narrative, Kyle explains the difference between the seller's journey and the buyer's journey and why that mindset shift is required. We also learn why most reps don't hit sales quotas, why that trend continues to drop, and why training is being scrapped throughout sales organizations. You do not need to work in sales to enjoy this conversation or the book. At the end, Mark treats us to his seven favorite sales-centric books of all time.
On the Wide World Segment, Saturday Mornings Show host Glenn van Zutphen and co-host Neil Humphreys are joined by Kyle Hegarty, Managing Director of Leadership Nomad and author of the new book Sales Punks – The Rebel's Guide to Re‑Writing the Rules of B2B Sales. Kyle takes us inside what he calls the current “sales recession”—a moment where targets are slipping, pipelines are slowing, and traditional sales playbooks are failing even as buyers spend more time researching independently. Kyle explains why buyer behaviour has fundamentally changed, why many sales teams haven’t kept up, and how Singapore businesses can grow smarter, not louder. Sales Punks argues that B2B selling is splitting into two distinct paths: Surge in self‑service buying, where customers want frictionless, low‑touch purchasing; and Rising need for high‑skill, consultative salespeople who can guide clients through complexity, risk, and internal decision‑making. Drawing on his work with sales teams across the US, Europe, and Asia, Kyle shares what companies must do now to rebuild sales capability for 2025 and beyond—from rethinking talent and training to redesigning the buyer journey itself.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the new novel Fair Play, Abigail is hosting a murder mystery party at an Irish country house on New Year's Eve. She's also in deep mourning for her brother. The story's opening reads as a typical setup for a crime novel. But Irish author Louise Hegarty's debut novel honors the golden age of detective fiction while simultaneously turning the genre on its head. In today's episode, Hegarty joins NPR's Ayesha Rascoe for a conversation that touches on Fair Play's meta elements, as well as its atypical relationship to grief. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

In this conversation, Pete Hegarty shares his remarkable journey following a severe accident during Freestyle Jump at last year's Division I Nationals. We hear first hand all about the details of his accident, the unique effects he suffered as a result of his traumatic brain injury, his long road to recovery, and his triumphant return at the World Tournament in Mulwala, Australia. Pete reflects on the mental and physical challenges he faced, the support he received from family and friends and the entire show ski community, and the importance of patience (which he lacked) in his rehabilitation process. He also shares the emotional moments of realization regarding the severity of his injury and his eventual return to the water, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Pete discusses the importance of setting goals, the gratitude he feels in many aspects of his journey, and the thrill of returning to competition for the first time. This comeback story is one that movies are made from. His journey is far from complete, and yet it's truly remarkable to see him back on top of the sport at the World Tournament just 7 months after his accident. HCS, the managed services provider with offices in Dublin, Waterford and Cork has announced that it has been acquired by Centric360. Centric360 is an investment vehicle owned jointly by Pamela Farrell and Brian Larkin, former directors of the Evros Technology Group which was acquired in 2020 by eir. The acquisition will be followed by further investment in HCS throughout 2025, including the expansion of its service portfolio and team. Over the past 30 years, HCS has become a highly successful managed services business spanning cyber security, cloud, digital transformation and telecoms. HCS has an impressive customer base across financial services, healthcare, hospitality, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing sectors. Since 2020, HCS has increased its turnover from €3.5 million to a projected revenue of €8 million in this financial year and more than doubled its team from 24 to 50 employees. The company has also invested heavily in automating its systems across sales and services, providing a foundation for long-term growth and innovation. Building on this acquisition by Centric360, both Larkin and Farrell see significant scope for further investment in the business in 2025. This will include enhancing and scaling the existing HCS service portfolio and expanding the sales and professional services teams to deliver an end-to-end offering with a best-in-class customer experience. The vision is to build on the company's impressive growth and foundations by extending the range of products and services to meet the rising demands of existing and future customers. Furthermore, the business intends to shift its focus beyond the SME and midmarket space to include larger enterprises. To support these plans, HCS will add additional expertise and resources to its experienced team in the coming months. In addition to creating jobs across its three Irish offices, the company will invest in the professional development and progression of the existing team. The acquisition also includes the purchase of the HCS headquarters in Waterford, where the business intends to strengthen its presence further. The current HCS owners and directors - Seán Hegarty, Dan Hegarty and Neil Phelan - will continue in their vital roles, contributing significantly to HCS's ongoing growth and future success. Meanwhile, Larkin will become Chairman and Farrell will assume the role of Managing Director. Together they bring extensive knowledge to the organisation, having been key contributors to building the Evros Technology Group to revenues of over €100 million and a 400-strong team. Speaking about the acquisition, HCS CEO Neil Phelan said: "It was important for us to join forces with people who understand our brand and history. Together, we hope to continue driving growth not just for the business but for our employees and customers too. Pamela and Brian bring extensive industry experience, strong professional reputation, and a proven track record in leadership and business expansion. Combined with our high-quality services, excellent client relationships and talented team, we look forward to elevating HCS to the next level." Pamela Farrell added: "It was clear from the moment we met with HCS that we shared similar values and vision for business. With the alignment of culture and expertise, we look forward to further investing in operations, expanding the company's capabilities, and bolstering the team. In turn, we intend to open up new opportunities while building on the organisation's existing legacy of delivering transformational, innovative services which customers can trust." Send me a text!Join me as I speak with Jon Hegarty about his brother Christian's remarkable journey in overcoming a terminal cancer diagnosis. In 2020, Christian was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. His doctors told him his only treatment options were chemotherapy or hospice care. Christian's story illustrates that when conventional medical treatment fails, alternative paths to healing are worth exploring. Willing to try anything, Christian gave himself 5 weeks to explore alternative treatments. He radically changed his mindset, implemented dozens of holistic healing strategies like high-dose vitamin C infusions and mistletoe. To everyone's astonishment, after just 5 weeks, the oncology team at Dana Farber called with shocking news - his tumors had somehow shrunk. Christian is now 2 years into remission. Since then, the brothers have started a non-profit called "GoingWell", that connects cancer survivors like Christian - people who have all but been written off by conventional medicine - to cancer patients who could benefit from their guidance and experience.Suggested Resources:Going WellMistletoe for cancerFenbendazole for cancerUse the code wellnstrong15 for 15% off at North Star GroundingGet my free guide, An Integrative Approach to Healing Breast CancerThis episode is proudly sponsored by Purity Woods.
