In this episode, I speak with Elisabeth Cardiello the Founder of Brave Conversations Over Coffee® & Caffe Unimatic, Inc. She is helping teams use coffee and conversation as a way to increase trust, inclusion, and performance. We will speak about showing up and daring to be present and lead brave conversations.
How often do you try to fail? If the answer is not often, you're too comfortable in the things you're directing your energy towards. If you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough, you're not trying anything new or risky. If you're not failing, you're not truly learning. Elisabeth Cardiello knows just how powerful failure can be. If you've seen the Netflix documentary, "Coffee For All," you may already know Elisabeth Cardiello. This Brooklyn-native had her first business cards at six and first product on shelves at 13. After college, business school and four years on Wall Street, she dealt with loss, found her passion and started a coffee company called Caffè Unimatic. After a decade of deconstructing why conversations over coffee are more genuine and less stress inducing than the conversations we have in boardrooms, she created a framework to reinvent the way organizations communicate. BRAVE Conversations Over Coffee is rooted in the tenets of neuroscience, positive psychology and hostage negotiation and gives organizations a way to address sensitive topics such as inclusion, burnout and mental health in order to build trust and unlock greater productivity. In addition to working with leaders at high stress companies like Facebook, Dalberg, Sumitomo Mitsui Bank and the NYPD, Elisabeth is an instructor for Simon Sinek's InspireU, two time TEDx speaker, spoken at UN Conferences, given Congressional briefings and has been featured by Forbes, NBC and Goop, among others. She also created a methodology that builds confidence in the young women and has traveled around the country speaking in Entrepreneurship Departments and Women in Business organizations. Her family is still wondering where that shy 9 year old went...Elisabeth’s mission is to build a world where coffee is the catalyst that inspires deeper listening, safer spaces and hence, greater access to our own creativity, connection and fulfillment. In this episode, Elisabeth thoughtfully shares with us how failure shaped her life and her career.Listen to this episode and learn about:- How Chris and Elisabeth are related (0:51)- Elisabeth giving credit and thanks to her childhood babysitter, Miss D. (4:13)- When Elisabeth's mentoring journey started (7:55)- How the ritual of asking how you failed today started in Elisabeth's family (10:51)- Developing confidence through curiosity (14:17)- Being humble while also being confident (17:50)- How no-one is self-made (20:23)- Breaking the gender barrier in leadership (24:38)- The importance of getting away from materialism and individualism (28:21)- How to help those around you (32:41)- Elisabeth's new chapter in life (39:55)- Elisabeth's message to Miss D. “Vulnerability is just sharing whatever emotion is in you.” One of the reasons 2020 has been so unsettling is because safety is a basic human need. When certainty is stripped away, fear bubbles up - causing us to feel as though the world is unsafe. But despite the chaos, there’s an opportunity to be found in the current climate. When the outside world shifts, we have no option but to dive within. In the process, we can cultivate emotional resilience and tap into a more reliable form of safety… the safety that comes from feeling certain inside your own emotions and your own body. So if you’re craving a sense of peace in this ‘unsafe’ world, this you’ll want to hear what this week’s incredible guest - Elisabeth Cardiello - has to share. “I like to think of empathy as opening this ocean of space so that you can meet the emotion.” Elisabeth Cardiello is the founder of a coffee company called Caffè Unimatic. Created by her father in the 1950s, the Unimatic drip-percolator became a symbol of Elisabeth’s childhood and hours of coffee-fuelled conversations. It was while sorting through her dad’s affairs after his unexpected death that the Unimatic took center stage in Elisabeth’s life again. Safely stored in the office’s storeroom, Elisabeth discovered a collection of 5,000 Unimatics manufactured by her dad in the 1960s - and Caffè Unimatic was born. Then more dots began to connect…As a child, Elisabeth was obsessed with asking better questions. As an adult, she’d deconstructed conversation and understood the importance of listening. Combined, this fueled her desire to use coffee to start the conversations that will harmonize our world - and the BRAVE Framework was born. BRAVE Conversations Over Coffee® is a platform designed to help companies, families, and teams communicate in a way that inspires vulnerability, empathy, courage, and acceptance. Elisabeth’s work has taken her to speak at UN Conferences. She’s given Congressional briefings, two TEDx Talks, and multiple keynotes, as well as been featured by the likes of Forbes, NBC, and Goop. What’s more, her life story is currently part of a Netflix documentary about how coffee connects humanity. In this beautiful conversation, Elisabeth shares how her coffee became a trigger for creating emotional resilience and unlocking the bravery we all need to thrive. Here’s a taste of the topics we explore. Methods for creating more safety in yourself. How rituals help you find deeper levels of resilience. The powerful ways that community helps you move forward. How Elisabeth’s dad inspired her business and her life’s work. Secrets for communicating compassion through your eyes. Strategies for using the ritual of coffee to start conversations that can harmonize the world. Elisabeth’s five-step BRAVE framework for vulnerable, authentic conversations. How to create and hold compassionate spaces for others to step into and thrive. And more…Elisabeth is an incredible human doing amazing work - especially given the times we’re in. I’m so excited for you to experience her presence in this powerful conversation. “For me, coffee is the opportunity to take a step forward every day.” How to contact caffeunimatic.com / braveconversationsovercoffee.comhttps://www.instagram.com/caffeunimatichttps://www.twitter.com/caffeunimaticFacebook: caffeunimaticWe thrive on your feedback, so if you’ve enjoyed this show, please rate us and leave us a review. The passing of a loved one is extremely difficult. It often eventually reminds us what really matters and the life that we want to live. For Elisabeth Cardiello, losing her Dad resulted in her eventually starting her company, Caffe Unimatic. Coffee and conversations over coffee was a signature experience and moment of connection between her and Dad. Elisabeth has started a project called Brave Conversations Over Coffee to help people become better communicators and listeners. You will learn how she is growing this initiative and has been helping others work on creating a life centered around their values and legacy. In this episode, you will learn:- how to map out a legacy- how to live true your values- how a thoughtful and passionate email can open up opportunities- how much our mindset impacts our actionsAs always, this episode with time-stamp notes is here
Elisabeth was probably the only six year old in Brooklyn with her own business cards. After college, business school and a four year stint in the finance industry, this native New Yorker dealt with loss, found herself and her passion, more loss, learned the meaning of post traumatic growth and embraced her pull to create. She started Caffè Unimatic, the coffee company that you may recognize from the Netflix documentary “Coffee For All.” She’s the co-founder of Legacy Out Loud, an educational platform and methodology designed to build confidence and resilience in young women. And most recently, she brought the two together and is the host of Brave Conversations Over Coffee®, an leadership development workshop series that’s half coffee tasting and half communication training to inspire transformational bravery in communication (to support real connection, creativity, leadership and mental health) in companies, at colleges and in the community. She’s always believed that she ended up in the world of coffee to use the global platform to make a bigger difference and now she’s using it to foster human connection. She’s a two time TEDx speaker, has spoken at UN conferences, given keynotes, Congressional briefings and when you hear the way she talks about coffee and it’s power to be a catalyst for change, she will inspire you to be more intentional about your most consistent morning ritual. Her family is still wondering where that shy 9-year-old went... This infinitely curious, coffee-loving, Brooklyn native had business cards at six and her first product on shelves at 13. After graduating from college, where she played Division 1 soccer, and business school with highest honors, she spent four years on Wall Street, at an investment bank and at a $4 billion alternative asset management fund. She dealt with loss, found her passion, more loss and learned the meaning of post-traumatic growth. She started a coffee company called Caffè Unimatic, with an awe-inspiring story, featured in the Netflix documentary “Coffee For All”. She has gone on to create a line of coffee, give two TEDx talks, co-found an education company to deploy the methodology designed to instill an unshakable sense of confidence and resilience in college-age women and started speaking in the US and abroad. Most recently, she’s combined her passions and become host of Brave Conversations Over Coffee, a workshop series, whose structure is rooted in neuroscience and grounded in the world’s favorite morning ritual, to help us trust ourselves more and become someone that others can trust as well. In this week’s episode, Elisabeth Cardiello of Caffè Unimatic and Brave Conversations Over Coffee shows us how this ubiquitous beverage can have rippling effects in our homes and in our communities. Elisabeth shares her trade secrets on what kinds of coffee to try and the different types of brewing that will make a world of difference for your "Morning Joe," as well as discussing the difference between American and Italian brews and how Italians use coffee as a way to connect with others. Founder and Owner of Caffè Unimatic, Inc., a woman owned coffee company born of a family legacy and the surprise of a lifetime, Elisabeth Cardiello is changing the conversation at the breakfast table. Caffè Unimatic is the proud purveyor of the last original “Unimatic” coffee pots in the world that were conceived in Brooklyn and made in Italy in the 1960s. While growing the company, Elisabeth started realizing just how much her Dad taught her all those mornings sitting around the family table drinking Unimatic coffee. She began using her own story as the basis for research around what gave her the confidence to start something with no guarantee it would succeed. This research and the methodology they created compelled her to co-found Legacy Out Loud, to pay forward this gift of confidence to young women everywhere. (Elisabeth on Kathy Ireland's show) Hear Elisabeth share her entire entrepreneurial journey since the age of 6 to today as how her Legacy Out Loud is Thriving Out LOUD.
Joining DJ CherishTheLuv in the studio today is the one and only Elisabeth Cardiello founder of Caffe Unimatic with roots from Italy! In Sweden another coffee-loving nation the act of sitting for a coffee break solo or with friends is called a "fika," a primary food action that most people don't realize they get to enjoy often! In this part of the world we don't really have a world for this. Today Elisabeth and Cynthia Cherish come up with a word brew some Unimatic handcrafted coffee on air and tell stories about the Cardiello family legacy all during a little fika in the HRN studio. Plus they may or may not have something very cool to announce as well! Listen and find out. Funky tunes provided by Ubiquity Records.
