Luigi and John Di Ruocco (along with their sister Laura) operate the business Mr. Espresso and the companion business The Caffè by Mr. Espresso. They join the podcast to chat about the company's longevity, their father Carlo Di Ruocco, and where Mr. Espresso is headed. Find them online: mrespresso.com and www.thecaffeoak.comThis bonus interview of the Coffee People podcast was originally slated for Season 13 of the podcast. We delayed the recording after the passing of the family patriarch and founder of Mr. Espresso, Carlo Di Ruocco. He had an outsized impact on coffee, in particular in the Bay-area, his legacy continues with the family and team who are continuing to share the Mr. Espresso mission with the coffee community and beyond. From Mr. Espresso:"Luigi and John Di Ruocco are the driving forces behind Mr. Espresso, a pioneering coffee company rooted in a rich family history. Their father, Carlo Di Ruocco, brought the craft of wood-roasting coffee from Salerno, Italy, to Northern California, establishing Mr. Espresso as a staple in the region's earliest farm-to-table establishments. This legacy of exceptional espresso, intertwined with their family's dedication and passion, is what Luigi and John continue to honor and advance."Coffee People is presented by Roastar, Inc., the premier coffee packaging company utilizing digital printing. It is a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's Brad Armitage. Not for lack of trying, but it's taken 120 episodes to convince an operator I admire tremendously to pop in for a chat on the show. Not one to blow his own trumpet, along with Rui Esteves, Brad created Vida e Caffè and followed it with Brewers & Union, the craft beer legend. There have been other bangers, but we confined our chat to those and to his current project with the City of Cape Town and other role-players bringing new life and fresh perspectives to downtown Cape Town with The Mission for Inner City Cape Town. We chatted about the early days, and about giving back to a city that has been so good to many local businesses. Where did Lord Byron and Percy Shelley come to sip coffee while they jotted down their verses? Where did Bizet and Berlioz go to discuss their work? Where could Casanova be found trying to pick up girls? Caffè Greco, where else? Having opened in 1760, Antico Caffè Greco is the oldest café in Rome and the second-oldest in all of Italy! And you can still go there and sit where Hawthorne, Ibsen, Gogol, Goethe, Canova, and many many other literary, art, and musical greats rubbed elbows and drank coffee. On this episode, we visit the famous café, grab some espresso ourselves, and discuss what it feels like to drink coffee in the same place so many brilliant thinkers over the generations did the same. This week, Joe and Tom sit down with Anna and Nev, the sibling duo behind the UK's oldest family-run caff. It's been serving up lasagnas, fry-ups and strong cups of tea for 125 years — long enough to witness changing food trends, a few fights behind the counter, and some very questionable breakfast orders. They spill the beans on famous customers, proper portions, and why calling it a “café” is just plain wrong. Oh, and Madonna might have had their bread and butter pudding. From his formative years to those now spent electrifying stages worldwide, Josh Caffé's life has been one immersed in music. Decadently so. As a rare artist who's mastered production, singing/songwriting, performing and DJing, Josh is a jack of all trades- who will jack your body to boot. But though his predilection and fascination with music were apparent from the jump, his path to becoming an artist wasn't quite as clear.Tune in to this episode to hear Josh's unique perspective as to why live performances are of crucial importance at parties. And more essential than ever in an era when DJing is pervasive and live shows are far lesser so.And check out Josh Caffe's music on: joshcaffe.bandcamp.com & soundcloud.com/josh-caffeHave an insatiable appetite for all things rave?
