Casual Trek - A Star Trek Recap and Ranking Podcast

Star Trek's universe is bizarre and horrifying at times. Cosmic beings summon orcs to stab you in the back, alternate versions of your flagship get stuck in a wormhole, nonlinear entities get taught about time through memories of baseball, love and death. It's all a bit weird and we're going to revel in it today by talking about cosmic horror. Ships full of Vulcans get a rough time today, starting with The Immunity Syndrome where a space amoeba kills them and the rest of a solar system. Can the crew discover a solution when their energy and the ship's are rapidly dwindling? The next cosmic entity is Nagilum, who is self-aware, godlike and a real jerk! The Enterprise has to work out a solution to get this bastard off their back, but it might mean their own deaths! Wesley picks the best time to take a break from the Conn and we get some camera experiments to distract from this being a bottle episode. Finally we're back to tormenting a ship of Vulcans in Impulse, where they're driven into a mad, zombie-like rage! Not only are these T'Pol's old colleagues, but she's also infected. Can the crew survive until help comes? Also Trip & Mayweather get their fanciest gold spacesuits on to go all Minecraft on some asteroids. 00:01:33 What Non-Star Trek Thing We've Been Enjoying 00:15:02 Talking about Cosmic Horror 00:17:58 Star Trek: The Original Series “The Immunity Syndrome” 00:43:15 Star Trek: The Next Generation “Where Silence Has Lease” 01:11:03 Star Trek: Enterprise “Impulse” If anyone could do a cover of the Enterprise theme tune based on either the Donnie Darko “Mad World” or “Cotton Eye Joe” that would be amazing and we would give you a shout out for performing such madness. Talking points include: We literally only mention him once at the start, but of course Howie P Lovecraft gets a mention, Event Horizon, Space Battleship Yamato, Miles' guest appearance on Breakfast in the Ruins, The Coming of the Terraphiles, Star Wars The Acolyte, making The Force weird, the disappointment of The Book of Boba Fett, Hold the Front Page, Taskmaster, getting a bit political, Charlie tries to explain cosmic horror in 30 words and loses count, Bobby Davros, Bobby Davro, The Beatles, a redshirt who looks like a young Hugh Dennis, stuntmen called Dick, Babylon 5, Time Lord reproduction, Star Wars Expanded Universe, The Langoliers, power ballads, Rock Band (RIP), The Backrooms, Portal, Earl Boen, Terminator, anime references in Star Trek: TNG, Dirty Pair, Chris Claremont, Buffy, Ernest Kline deserves a kicking, Knightmare, Quentin Quire & Damian Wayne, a thematic trilogy, Impulse (the comic), the descent of the Black Eyed Peas, the most 2003 guest star on a track of music, Mad World, Annihilation, the Space War on Terror, Battlestar Galactica, Alias, 24, Lost, Eastenders, PUT JEFFREY COMBS IN DOCTOR WHO YOU COWARDS!, Space: 1999, Star Maidens. Oh, and occasionally Star Trek. Pedant's Corner: Miles left the country two years into the 14 years of Tory rule. Charlie's summary of cosmic horror was 22 words, so we both lost count. Miles' “reverse logic” bit was 12 seconds, the sspreadsheet has been adjusted accordingly Casual Trek is by Charlie Etheridge-Nunn and Miles Reid-Lobatto Music by Alfred Etheridge-Nunn Casual Trek is a part of the Nerd & Tie Network https://ko-fi.com/casualtrek Miles' blog: http://www.mareidlobatto.wordpress.com Charlie's blog: http://www.fakedtales.com

Hang out with the English Club as we discuss Ernest Kline's Ready Player One! We both read our own half, and together, we try to put the pieces together. ABOUT THE BOOK: IN THE YEAR 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines, puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9969571-ready-player-one # ABOUT US: English Club Podcast is a joint venture between two critique partners at "Saint Balasar University". This time it's not Twitch in the mix but it does involve Twitch streamer xQc. He is in hot water on twitter over an older clip. From Game RantStreaming personality xQc is no stranger to bans. This year alone, the streamer has been banned twice, once from Twitch after stream sniping and another time for streaming an inappropriate game. But this time, his ban is from Twitter, and it seems to be a massive mistake.xQc has several clips from his own stream on his Twitter, taken from Twitch. These small samples of streams, which can be clipped from live streams, are usually only about 10 seconds long. xQc is not the only streamer with a few clips on other social media sites. When he got locked out of his Twitter for a DMCA complaint, he was surprised to find it was a clip of his own Twitch stream.Twitter sent a notice, claiming that a copyright complaint had been levied against his account for the clip, and that he had to review Twitter's copyright rules to remove the lockout. It is pretty obvious that, since the streamer was DMCA'd for content that old and from his own stream, that the process is not being very closely looked at by Twitter.Rogue  - At this point are platforms just looking for a reason to mess with this guy?  Forsen says he feels “unappreciated” after returning from Twitch suspension  Lastly, Exiled streamer Forsen is back and says he feels unappreciated after his return to twitch. Boo frickin Hoo.From Dexerto - Forsen rose to fame by competing professionally in StarCraft II and Hearthstone, and now is one of the biggest, most established channels on the site. That wasn't enough to save the Swedish streamer from catching an indefinite ban after he inadvertently showed a GIF that broke Twitch's Terms of Service and sent in by a viewer on stream. He's now returned and shared some thoughts on the suspension with viewers, and why he doesn't feel like his community gets the credit it deserves sometimes.“To sum it up, I feel a little underappreciated,” he told viewers. “You know, I might not have the most viewers, the most subscribers, or bring in the most ad money or whatever on this platform, but I do have like an aura effect, ok maybe aura isn't the best word.”“What I'm trying to say is that 9/10 good memes/inside jokes come from this community and spread to other communities,” the streamer argued. “So, other communities have more fun, right? And then those viewers stay on Twitch longer.”So Next time you have fun anywhere on twitch make sure you think of poor forsen. Stump - Do you think he has a point here or is he just whining for attention?  Twitch streamer goes viral after rogue mouse ruins Christmas dinner  Normally at Christmas, you'll see Twitch streamers taking a day off to enjoy the festivities and recharge after a long year of being in the public eye. This can provide less popular streamers the opportunity to showcase their talents to a wider audience, as viewers look for entertainment elsewhere. For Hollycannabis, who was probably expecting a chill stream and an opportunity to showcase her cooking skills, her relaxing Christmas Day stream was about to be ruined by a pesky rodent leaping from a kitchen drawer and into her oven.It wasn't going to be ratatouille for dinner, though. The mouse seemed to escape from the oven, as it wasn't in there when Holly went back to check. In fact, it seemed to disappear completely off the face of the earth, as it wasn't in the oven nor the drawer underneath. But then, five minutes after the initial trauma had subsided and armed with a pair of tongs, Holly summoned up the courage to investigate the draw under the oven again. The mouse had managed to hide underneath a baking tray, and immediately went dashing back under cover.Reba - We have a history on this show of seeing IRL streams go wrong. I'm not sure if getting robbed live on stream or having a mouse leap at you is worse. What do you think?Tech News Star Citizen is the $339 million game that still doesn't have a release date  Let's go on a journey together. Imagine people are upset over a game that has been in development for years and they are starting to feel lied to. Complaining they want the game to come out, they feel bamboozled, cheated and scammed. Nope not talking about Cyber punk from last year we are talking about the world most expensive game Star CitizenFrom yahoo news -When head developer Chris Roberts first announced Star Citizen in 2010 with a Kickstarter campaign, gamers were brimming with excitement. Tens of thousands of people eagerly backed the project, nine of whom pledged $10,000 while another 19 pledged $5,000.Star Citizen is now possibly the most expensive video game of all time. Most of its $339 million budget has been directly funded by pledgers and players. The lucrative funding prompted Cloud Imperium Games to announce Squadron 42 in 2015, a single-player companion to Star Citizen starring Hollywood stars such as Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson and Mark Strong. But the Squadron 42 beta has been delayed yet again. After 10 years of being stuck in alpha development, irreverent and irate gamers are panning Star Citizen once again.I wont get into the details of their complaints but this is becoming a growing trend in the game industry. Stump - This may be a sore subject for you as I know you and I both have crowdfunded game makers that have gone belly up. Google's Wing warns new drone laws ‘may have unintended consequences' for privacy  If you watched our weekday update you may have heard about the new rules regarding drones and delivery drones in US airspace.Google (technically, Alphabet) isn't too happy about those new rules, as it turns out. The company's drone delivery subsidiary Wing wrote a somewhat fear mongering post (via Reuters) titled “Broadcast-Only Remote Identification of Drones May Have Unintended Consequences for American Consumers,” which argues that the FAA's decision to have drones broadcast their location might let observers track your movements, figuring out where you go, where you live, and where and when you receive packages, among other examples.“American communities would not accept this type of surveillance of their deliveries or taxi trips on the road. They should not accept it in the sky,” Wing argues. With that kind of language, you might think Wing is arguing that drones shouldn't broadcast their location, yes? Amusingly, no: the Alphabet subsidiary just wishes they'd send it through the internet instead of broadcasting it locally.Rogue - Seems a bit rich that the worlds biggest spy company is mad about spying. You have to thing they want it online for their own purposes don't you think?Think Amazon's Alexa is Hot? Sex Coach Says You Shouldn't Feel Weird If you've got a crush on Amazon's Alexa, you're not alone. Sex coach Sarrah Rose exclusively tells In Touch that it's actually not all that weird to find the virtual assistant hot — even if “her” physical form looks more like a computer speaker than a person. In fact, the New York Post reports that 28 percent of people are attracted to Alexa, but why is that? According to Rose, it's partially the way Alexa is designed and partially a natural human curiosity.“Right now, people are bored and wanting to experiment and try new things,” the sex coach explains. “It's not new for humans to anthropomorphize technology. In 1966, it was ELIZA [a chatbot designed to simulate human conversation] and today it's Alexa.” Even her name alone has a certain “sexy, no nonsense vibe” that lends itself to developing a little crush. And she's got a personality, too.“At the end of the day, times are trying right now,” Rose adds. “If crushing on Alexa makes [people] feel better, then they should enjoy themselves without feeling weird about it.” Just don't let Amazon's gadget “distract” you from “taking the steps necessary to have a life beyond [having] a machine to talk to.”Reba -  Is this the beginning of Robot/ai and human relationships developing to the next level?Entertainment News Ready Player Two Movie Adaptation In Early Stages, According to Author A movie adaptation of Ready Player Two is in early development according to author Ernest Cline. His original nostalgia-fueled novel was released in 2011 and it caught the attention of Steven Spielberg not too long after. Spielberg set his sites on directing a big-screen adaptation of Ready Player One, and it finally hit theaters in 2018. The movie received only moderately positive reviews but it became a decent box office success for Warner Bros, earning over $580 million worldwide.Cline is currently doing press for the release of Ready Player Two and that means addressing the status of the book becoming the inspiration for a sequel movie. During an interview with Inverse, Cline confirmed that development is underway on the sequel. It is in the early stages right now and has yet to be announced by the studio. But Cline seems to believe that most of the original team will return after having a good experience making Ready Player One. Here's his full quote:“It's in the early stages right now, especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now. But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun.”Rogue are you excited for another installment of the series?Rome Is Renovating the ColosseumIn a possible giant facepalm move Rome has decided to renovate the Colosseum. Smithsonian magazine reported on the renovation, which Italy's Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (or MiBACT) is funding. The Ministry is currently looking for engineers for the project, which it wants to initiate in 2021.“[The renovation] will be a major technological intervention that will offer visitors the opportunity to not only see the underground rooms…but also appreciate the beauty of the Colosseum while standing in the center of the arena,” Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said in a statement (via BBC News). The new flooring will also “allow the public to fully understand the use and function of this icon of the ancient world,” the statement added. As for the renovations of the Colosseum's floor, the aim is restore it faithfully, and update its functionality. The floor was originally made of wood and topped with sand, and covered the hypogeum; the network of underground tunnels beneath the arena's floor gladiators and other participants in the games and entertainment would use.The Ministry says the new floor will be able to move like the original, opening and closing above the hypogeum. While the floor originally opened and closed to release gladiators and wild animals, it will now open for tourists, and close for rain.STUMP - I am really nervous about this. We have seen some “restorations” of old paintings go horribly wrong the last few years. Do you think they should leave well enough alone? https://dailysoapdish.com/2021/01/tiktokers-charli-and-dixie-damelio-travel-during-pandemic/ When you are a celebrity, you will get backlash for pretty much everything that you do. One of these things is traveling during a pandemic. Just recently, TikTok stars Charli D'Amelio and Dixie D'Amelio traveled to the Bahamas for their holiday break. They aren't the only ones and their fans think that this was extremely irresponsible of them and their families.Charli, Dixie, Madi Monroe, Noah Beck, and Avani Gregg were just a few of the celebs to be seen at the resort all together. In almost every picture, there are no masks to be seen on the teenagers.Fans were incredibly upset to see the teenagers all together and traveling all over the country. California is still in the “safer at home” order and fans thought that their parents should have made the choice to keep these girls home, while the hospitals are all full or filling up again because of COVID-19.Reba -  We have seen celebrities, politicians and other influencers blatantly disregarding rules. Do you think this hurts their brand or will this just give more exposure to the stars?BOLD PREDICTIONS I dont know anything about video game laws, but in the coming year we will see new laws regarding the crowd funding of games that go nowhere. I dont know much about the writing process or creating things people want to watch but Ernest Kline like some other authors will continue writing works that they had finished for continued move deals. We will see a ready player next in 2025 or so. Yeah that first part was directed at J.K. Plug your stuff.Zazzaboo plug the site, Pod etc Don't forget to check out the patreon. Thanks and we will see you next week!★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

We have reached the end of our second Trilogy review, my Howlers!  The sun never sets in space, but our squadron's time with Morning Star must inevitably come to its end.  Will Bob, Luke, Klab, and Neal end with the rage of Ares, the strength of Ragnar, the honor of Cassius, the love of Sevro, the loyalty of Victra, the dream of Eo, or will we simply devolve into decapitating our leader in order to appoint a successor? This time on Tavern Talk: Luke gets time bamboozeled by the Netflix series 'Altered Carbon' and discusses his deep feelings on Star Wars. Klab binges on 'Criminal Minds' while Bob accuses author Ernest Kline of being a 'One Trick Pony' in his second novel, 'Armada'. And the Round Table answers some feedback, as well as discussing the state of YA fiction. What is it? And should it even be a thing?
