Few CDI professionals are rising as fast as Faisal Hussain, Executive Director of CDI at Wellstar Health System in Georgia. Fewer still have come as far as he has, both literally and figuratively. A foreign medical graduate and native of Pakistan, Hussain has risen up through the ranks in a remarkable career in healthcare. In his current role he is responsible for overseeing the CDI strategy and operations for the entire Wellstar health system, comprised of nine hospitals and more than 300 medical offices, as well as cancer centers, rehabilitation centers, hospice facilities, and urgent care locations. It's a huge task and he recently completed a firehose of a first year with the organization. But in case that didn't keep him busy enough, Hussain this year also ran for and was elected to the ACDIS advisory board, in addition to serving as a member of the ACDIS leadership council and the ACDIS regulatory committee. And he's done it all with kindness and humility while raising a young family. On this show we cover: • A day in the life of Faisal Hussain, Executive Director of CDI • WellStar's CDI strategy and metrics for success, including a focus on chart touches that matter and a proactive rather than reactive approach to chart review • Recent wins (build and pilot of a promising homegrown EHR documentation tool) and struggles as a new leader and new(ish) dad seeking better work-life balance • An unlikely and winding path from graduate of Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, to MD, and finally to CDI • Winning the organizational Diversity in CDI award at the 2023 ACDIS conference, and his own prior experience with discrimination • His favorite classic pop or rock song (because, it's Off the Record, duh). I refused to bend on “Baby Shark.”

In this episode, Sivan spoke to Faisal who is a creative entrepreneur based in Cambridgeshire and has a background in marketing, coaching/mentoring and community development. After being diagnosed with ADHD and dyspraxia in November 2021, he feels that it's now part of his duty to raise awareness about neurodiversity in the Muslim community and beyond as being undiagnosed for 26 years of life impacted his life, upbringing, education, relationships, spirituality, mental health and career. Faisal's creativity as an artist has helped him therapeutically throughout life and he likes to show the impact it can have in wider society and his mental health. He continues to implement awareness in society about neurodiversity, most recently helping create the neurodiversity training package and support groups for staff at London Fire Brigade. He also has created social media awareness channels to raise awareness about ADHD which have received a worldwide response - especially from the Muslim community. A video Faisal created about having ADHD in November went viral, the reaction from the Muslim world showed him the importance of raising awareness about it. He believes that Muslims need to also learn that learning difficulties are different to mental health issues however can exist and can impact them further. The Ezra Levant Show (June 24, 2019) — Almost one year after the grotesque act of carnage that would be known as the Danforth Shooting, the Toronto Police investigation into the crimes of Faisal Hussain have been released to the public. Last July, Hussain walked along Toronto's Danforth Avenue on a Sunday evening. He opened fire selectively, killing two people and injuring 13 more before turning the gun on himself. Not everyone encountered by Hussain that evening was shot, which is why his motivation is a crucial piece of the puzzle. GUEST Dorre Love

Loon Wolves & The Toronto Terror Attack

When a mass shooting occurred in Toronto, this past July, the media was - as usual - coy about who the shooter was. They didn’t give us his name or a closeup photo for an inexcusably long time. These are sure signs, as we are coming to recognize, that the shooter’s ethnic identity would be revealed by these pieces of information. In particular, sure signs that the shooter is likely a terrorist. And the media are desperate to keep such speculation at bay. The Danforth shooter (named after the street in Toronto where the mass shooting occurred) was finally revealed to be 29-year-old Faisal Hussain. He killed 2 victims and injured 13. But then the question became: was Faisal Hussain mentally ill, or a terrorist, or both? In other words, was he a loon wolf? Born to Canadian parents of Pakistani origin, his family was quick to release a public statement claiming that Faisal had been psychotic and depressed throughout his life, as if this would prove he wasn’t a terrorist. Meanwhile ISIL claimed he was a soldier of the Islamic State. And despite Toronto authorities denying this, a police search of the home he shared with his parents found ammunition, large-capacity magazines, and evidence that he visited ISIL websites. Like most perpetrators of terror attacks, there were red flags that weren’t heeded - from his telling a teacher he wanted to kill someone because it would be cool, to several people having called the authorities to investigate Faisal. In this podcast, Dr. Carole puts Faisal on her couch and answers the question: Do terrorists target the mentally ill because they’re more vulnerable to radicalization?

This past Sunday night, July 22 in Toronto, Faisal Hussain, a 29-year-old resident went on a shooting rampage on a number of Danforth Avenue restaurants. A 10-year-old girl and and and 18-year-old woman were killed, with many more injured in the attack. This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to all those who have lost someone in this and other violent attacks. The news headlines and the media over the last few days have made it seem like the city of Toronto is falling apart as a result of increased violence. This morning I read an article in The Guardian which made we wonder,What are the best kinds of questions we should be asking, right now?In this special episode of the Living OUT Podcast, I discuss why the questions and statements I’ve read and heard people talking about are problematic. For example,“What’s happening to my city?”, or;“Can’t believe the city I love is unraveling before my eyes because of the actions of a few sick people,”These types of questions and statements are not helpful. The media glorifies these types of questions for sound bites and it makes the news addictive. It shifts our focus into reaction and fear; not response and empathy. These are redundant or rhetorical questions / statements that keep people stuck in fear and focused on the wrong issues. It allows people to jump to conclusions based on too few details to make any sort of logical judgment about the overall situation. To get to the truth of what’s happening with respect to this tragedy in Toronto, as well as other similar incidents, we need to ask questions in a different way. We need to,Ask for insight;Ask from empathy, and;Ask in a way that requires an empowering solution as the answer.I’m not saying this is easy, but…Better questions to ask about this tragedy are,“What can we do now?”“Why do we allow the sale of guns in Canada?”“How is turning a blind eye to mental health, poverty, and the displacement of individuals making situations like this worse?”News articles referenced for this episode:Rattled by string of violent attacks, Toronto wonders if city is unravelingGunman in Danforth rampage had prior contact with police: source'Like 2 different people': Friend of Faisal Hussain struggles to understand what sparked Danforth rampageToronto shooting: Why there are no simple explanations for acts of mass violenceLiving OUT theme music: “Summer” by Bensound.com
