Wall Street closed in firmly negative territory on Monday, continuing a rout that's reaching historic dimensions. After Trump's disruptive tariff policies, it's now his attacks on the US Federal Reserve that are unsettling investors. The US president has been lambasting the head of the central bank, Jerome Powell, on social media. He called Powell "a major loser" and urged "pre-emptive cuts in interest rates". We take a look at the Federal Reserve's mandate and why it's supposed to be independent of political pressure.
Vasu Menon, Managing Director, Investment Strategy, OCBC Bank discusses why US President Donald Trump is threatening to fire the Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell, and if there is a valid argument behind Trump's call for lower rates "immediately". It was on the first day of Taiwan's four day Tomb Sweeping (清明) Festival weekend that businessmen woke up to the news that Taiwan could expect a 32 percent%, on top of a standard 10% tariff on all its exports to the United States. But just hours after it took effect, that immense tariff was suspended for 90 days. How some businesses responded to the first announcement, and what it should do with the grace period is the subject of much discussion. The nonprofit workforce is facing a seismic shift—and Dana Scurlock, Director of Recruitment at Staffing Boutique, is sounding the alarm. Dana shares her front-line insights into how nonprofit hiring, funding, and retention are being shaken by rapid economic changes, sudden government funding losses, and the ripple effects of widespread layoffs.“This isn't like the 2008 recession—it's a new kind of shock,” Dana warns, “caused by government decisions, not just market forces. And it's hitting nonprofits harder than most expect.” With federal funding like USAID vanishing overnight, entire nonprofit teams are being let go. “We had people with 10-year careers suddenly unemployed, instantly flooding the job market,” she explains. But it's not just about job loss—it's about how organizations and individuals can respond strategically. Dana urges nonprofit leaders to prepare now: streamline hiring strategies, proactively build relationships, and invest in operational resilience. For job seekers, her advice is clear: tailor your resume, keep your online presence updated, and target your applications with laser focus. “Five thoughtful applications are better than twenty generic ones,” she advises. In today's chaotic labor environment, many hiring managers are frozen in fear, paralyzed by a rattled economy. Even temporary hiring is down. Yet Dana sees this as an opportunity. “Now is the time to be proactive. Hire for strategy—bring in a temp to build a grant pipeline or kick off a new campaign before the fiscal year resets,” she suggests. What's the biggest takeaway for nonprofit leaders? Talk to each other. Share intelligence. Cross-pollinate ideas. “The best information comes from each other,” says Dana. “Let's stop gatekeeping and start collaborating.”This episode isn't just a conversation—it's a wake-up call. If you lead a nonprofit, manage a team, or are navigating a career pivot, this dialogue is your blueprint for staying ahead of the curve.#NonprofitWorkforce #LaborTrends2025 #RattledEconomy Find us Live daily on YouTube!Find us Live daily on LinkedIn!Find us Live daily on X: @Nonprofit_ShowOur national co-hosts and amazing guests discuss management, money and missions of nonprofits! 12:30pm ET 11:30am CT 10:30am MT 9:30am PTSend us your ideas for Show Guests or Topics: HelpDesk@AmericanNonprofitAcademy.comVisit us on the web:The Nonprofit Show

Huge U.S. technology companies that soared amid an artificial intelligence frenzy last year are getting pummeled after a little-talked-about Chinese startup demonstrated a chatbot that it says rivals versions from OpenAI and Google, and for a fraction of the cost. An AI company called DeepSeek said it has developed a large language model that can compete with U.S. giants. It's a new kind of chatbot that rivals some of the leading models from Google, OpenAI and Anthropic. DeepSeek seemed to come out of nowhere, barely noticed in tech circles until mid-January. But experts say it's not entirely a surprise. "It was clear that they were one of the leading shops in China, but is a very small outfit that basically achieved some remarkable AI capabilities. And also another thing that's remarkable about it is that they did so with very much less resources than some of the big tech firms. And so that's why it's caused a big of an upset because people thought that it wouldn't really be possible to build such a good AI unless you were big tech. And so it has changed people's perception on the industry a little bit," says Carsten Jung, Head of Macroeconomics and AI at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). DeepSeek's app had already hit the top of Apple's App Store chart, and analysts said such a feat would be particularly impressive, given how the U.S. government has restricted Chinese access to top AI chips. Skepticism, though, remains about how much DeepSeek's announcement will ultimately shake the AI supply chain, from the chip makers making semiconductors to the utilities hoping to electrify vast data centers running those chips. "AI is becoming cheaper. It is becoming better. And progress is continuing to increase… But DeepSeek definitely is now in the game and people will use it, but not for everything," says Jung. DeepSeek's disruption also rocked AI-related stocks worldwide. In Amsterdam, Dutch chipmaking equipment company ASML slid 7%. In Tokyo, Japan's Softbank Group Corp. lost 8.3% to pull closer to where it was before leaping on an announcement trumpeted by the White House that it was joining a partnership to invest up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure. A Wonderful Wednesday to you all! Filmmaker Adam Linkenhelt should have been on this podcast a loooooong time ago. Why do I say that? Because not only did Adam have two films in the festivals that I run in 2024, way back in 2016 a film that he co-directed was in the first ever festival that our team presented when Film Invasion Los Angeles (FILA) debuted. Time for the list? In 2016, Adam's film “Passports” was at FILA. Then in 2024 his film “The Unreliables” was at FILA 2024, earning Adam and his co- writer Jen Robyn Jacobs the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Screenplay - Drama. And get this. Adam directed two films that were submitted to FILA's sister-festival, Sherman Oaks Film Festival, also in 2024. We had to pick one, even though both were great, but right now I will just give a shoutout to both “Rattled” and “A Close Encounter.” Not only does Adam always do great work, but he told me at FILA 2024 that he had accepted the role of festival runner at the Anchorage Film Festival in Alaska! I was delighted that he wanted to pick my brain a little bit for it and I could not have been happier to see the great things happening up in Anchorage while I was busy at SOFF. Needless to say, we spent more than a little time talking “festival running” in this podcast. Consider this a chance to see behind the festival curtain a little! @AdamLinkenhelt anchoragefilmfestival.org _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Discover Indie Film Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter The INDIE Channel The INDIE Channel Website – Instagram – Facebook – X/Twitter – TikTok

The ongoing confirmation hearings for RFK Jr., Kash Patel, and Tulsi Gabbard have been largely predictable. But as always, the real story isn't the grandstanding—it's in the quiet calculations happening behind the scenes. This was RFK Jr.'s second day facing the Senate, and the discussion largely revolved around his past statements on vaccines. But if you're looking for movement in the room, there wasn't much. Coverage focused on explosive exchanges between Democrats and the nominees, but that's irrelevant. The Democrats can all vote no, and it won't change a thing. What matters is what Republicans are saying—and there's little indication that they are going to vote against RFK Jr.RFK Jr. remains politically resilient for two reasons:* The Kennedy name still holds value with a broad swath of Americans.* His skepticism of Big Pharma and Big Agriculture resonates with a coalition that includes both libertarians and "crunchy moms"The main Republican angle of attack was always going to be abortion. RFK Jr. has been pro-choice his entire life, but now he's taking orders from a pro-life president. How does that play out? He faced questions about the abortion pill but gave answers that were lukewarm at best.My assumption: He's moving forward.Kash Patel's hearing was predictably contentious, with heated exchanges involving Adam Schiff and Amy Klobuchar. But, again, those don't matter. He also had solid support from Republican lawmakers, which means his confirmation is essentially a done deal.If Matt Gaetz was a non-starter because of his long list of enemies, Patel should have had similar problems—he's burned plenty of bridges. The difference? Patel has a history in law enforcement, whereas Gaetz does not. That seems to be enough to push him through. This is where things get interesting. Unlike RFK Jr., Tulsi Gabbard doesn't have the built-in advantage of a famous name. Unlike Patel, she lacks a Republican establishment safety net. And unlike both of them, she has a real opposition force: the intelligence community.Tulsi has been one of the most vocal critics of the intelligence agencies, particularly regarding FISA Section 702, which she argues enables domestic surveillance. She's also expressed support for Edward Snowden—a major red flag for the very institutions she'd be overseeing as Director of National Intelligence. Her hearing featured a bipartisan focus on one specific issue: Would she call Snowden a traitor? She wouldn't.She acknowledged that Snowden broke the law, that there were other ways he could have exposed government overreach. But she refused to use the word “traitor.” And that, oddly enough, might be the line that sinks her.It speaks to a deeper issue of symbolic politics. It wasn't enough to condemn Snowden's actions—she needed to emotionally brand him as a traitor. Her refusal to do so is revealing because it suggests that there are Republicans who may see her as too much of a risk to intelligence operations.Looking at prediction markets like Polymarket:* Kash Patel is sitting comfortably at 95%.* RFK Jr. has dipped slightly from 78% to 75%, but still strong.* Tulsi Gabbard is now underwater at 44%.That's not a good place to be.Gabbard's nomination has created one of the strangest coalitions in modern politics—hardcore MAGA figures lining up alongside Tom Cotton and Meghan McCain. But if Trump's team is going to throw its weight behind any nominee, it'll likely be her. The next 72 hours will tell us if she has the votes or if this is where the process stalls. Not a ton of surprises overall, but one question remains: Will the Trump administration go all in on Tulsi? We'll see.In this episode we also have a great chat with Michael Tracey who makes his Px3 debut. I wanted to talk to him about current events but we wound up spending the whole hour rehashing the 2024 campaign. On an unseasonably chilly morning of June 3, 1990, a man tapped on the door of an unfamiliar car parked in front of his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Through the window, he could see a blonde woman in the passenger seat slumped over toward the driver's side of the car. He assumed she was drunk and passed out, but when he opened the car door to wake her up, he quickly realized that she was dead. Rattled, he quickly closed the door and immediately called the police. The woman was later identified as 21-year-old Beth Buege. Born and raised in Milwaukee she worked in a jewelry store and was an aspiring model. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for November 14, 2024 is: raddled RAD-uld adjective Someone described as raddled is in a confused or befuddled state (as from drinking). Raddled can also describe things that are broken-down or worn. // We were met at the door by a raddled old man who turned out to be the actor's father, and who in his day had also been an estimable presence on the London stage. // Louisa was delighted to discover a raddled old radio in her grandparents' attic, even though it didn't work. See the entry > Examples: “There seems to be very little information out there about Krinkles, the star of a commercial so disturbing its eternal afterlife on the internet is guaranteed: it's probably all in a heavily guarded facility in Area 51. In the ad, this raddled gentleman pokes his head out of what appears to be a kennel after what was clearly a heavy night, crashes his way through the scenery, then eats some cereal.” — Emma Beddington, The Guardian (London, England), 31 Jan. 2024 Did you know? The origins of raddled are a bit of a riddle, but they may have something to do with rodel, the Middle English precursor to ruddle. Rattled? No need to get red-faced, we're here to explain. Rodel, like ruddle, refers to red ocher, a red pigment used for (among other things) marking animals, and especially sheep. Etymologists believe that both the noun raddle (also meaning “red ocher”) and verb raddle (“to mark or paint with raddle”) come from a variant of rodel. A raddled sheep is a sheep marked with red dye (as at shearing or breeding time). Over time, the verb raddle was applied more broadly to the reddening of anything, and often to reddening by use (or overuse) of rouge on a person's face to conceal wrinkles caused by age or exhaustion. To be raddled thusly was not a compliment, and may have led to the “worn out” sense of the adjective raddled. The “confused” sense of raddled is often associated with the influence of alcohol, possibly due to the “reddening” effects of a tipple on one's visage.

Donald Trump's allies reportedly fear Trump's recent hate rally might have badly hurt him, and worry their internal polls aren't getting it right on how shaky his standing is in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, new polls show surprising movement among women and undecided voters toward Kamala Harris. Trump raged at a rally about the highly regarded Des Moines Register poll showing him down three in Iowa and tweeted madly about other less-reputable polls he likes better. His campaign put out a crazed memo accusing pollsters of conspiring against him. With the race still a coin flip, we talked to Danielle Butterfield, executive director of the Democratic PAC Priorities USA, about what must happen now for Harris to win.
