In today's episode, University of Michigan law professor Leah Litman argues that the office of DNI could be put to even more nefarious and “terrifying” use. Indeed, GOP Senate Majority Leader John Thune suggested it may produce a “weaponized” DNI, a striking admission of serious danger ahead. Senator Tom Cotton curtly refused to share his opinion of the choice. And other GOP Senators said Pulte is unqualified for the job. Given the DNI's power, these objections reveal visible consternation. Indeed, MAGA figures fully expect Pulte to be turned loose on the left. Fresh Reads: Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain by Dr. Nicole Pensak

A Fresh Story

Nobody tells you that becoming a mother is a neurological event. Nobody hands you a map for the identity that dissolves in the delivery room — or for the one that quietly, haltingly begins to take shape in its place. Nobody tells you that the intrusive thoughts, the rage, the moments of feeling utterly unrecognizable to yourself are not signs that you're broken. They are signs that your brain is doing something extraordinary. That's the story Dr. Nicole Pensak set out to tell — and it's a story that is long, long overdue. In this episode of A Fresh Story: Book Talk, Olivia sits down with clinical psychologist and maternal mental health expert Dr. Nicole Pensak to discuss her book Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain. Dr. Pensak didn't write this book from a distance. She wrote it from inside the experience — a newborn and a toddler at home, furiously typing between nap windows and hair-dryer moments, compelled by the urgency of a story she knew the world needed to hear. Her own postpartum journey brought her to rock bottom. Her clinical training and research helped her climb back out. And when she returned to the academic literature to understand what had happened to her, she found something stunning: an entire science of the postpartum brain that nobody was translating for the people who needed it most. Rattled is that translation.Structured in three parts — proactive mental health, the neurocognitive transformation of matrescence, and the path toward genuine thriving — Rattled is far more than a book about postpartum depression. It is a full-spectrum guidebook to one of the most profound transitions a human being can undergo. Dr. Nicole Pensak illuminates the mom shame, the mom guilt, the mom rage, the creative bursts, the identity shifts, and even the concept of "mom flow" — a way of accessing deep creative states in the small windows of time motherhood actually allows. For anyone navigating early parenthood, a major life transition, or a divorce that overlaps with pregnancy, this book offers something rare and irreplaceable: the experience of being seen, named, and guided — all at once.

People will tell you: a baby changes everything. What no one tells you is how much you change — and how hard it is to love yourself when you don't quite recognize yourself anymore. In this conversation, Dr. Becky sits down with poet and author Cleo Wade (Remember Love) to talk about what it actually feels like to lose yourself in early parenthood — and what finding your way back looks like. They go deep on postpartum depression, the guilt that masquerades as gratitude, why the hard thoughts hit so much harder than the hard moments themselves, and the small, unglamorous practices — a walk, a shower, two words on a post-it note — that can become a real turning point. Cleo's line has stayed with so many parents who've heard it: your motherhood is only as powerful as your personhood. This episode is a reminder of why that's true — and a guide for how to actually live it. We're re-releasing this episode to celebrate the launch of Rattled, our new podcast for the early years of parenthood, as well as a whole new home for the baby stage inside the Good Inside app — with sleep support, lactation expertise, workshops, and tools built around one belief: a parent who feels held can hold their baby. “The postpartum brain is brilliant, and we want to nurture that process versus hinder it.” -Dr. Nikki Pensak, PhD, PMH-CIn this episode of A Mind of Her Own, Dr. Jennifer Reid, host and author of Guilt Free, sits down with Dr. Nikki Pensak, clinical psychologist, perinatal mental health specialist, and author of Rattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain (Paperback arrives April 14th!) Together they explore the science behind how a woman's brain radically transforms during pregnancy and the postpartum period, why this developmental phase has a name (matrescence), and why virtually no one is talking about it.Dr. Pensak shares her own deeply personal story of experiencing postpartum depression twice, including a severe episode with symptoms of OCD during COVID while her son was in the NICU, and how hitting rock bottom as a mental health expert motivated her to write the book she wished had existed. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who is pregnant, postpartum, or supporting a new mother.Dr. Pensak's Three Moves to Matrescence1. Plan ItFrom the moment you find out you're pregnant, establish care with a mental health provider or prescriber who specializes in perinatal mental health. Get a baseline assessment, understand your unique risk factors, and have your support system in place before the baby arrives, not after.2. Name ItUnderstand that what you're going through is matrescence, a recognized, science-backed developmental phase. Name the identity changes, the emotional upheaval, the relationship stress. Knowing it has a name, and that it is expected, is itself therapeutic.3. Use ItOnce mental health is stabilized, harness the brain's remarkable neuroplasticity. Rise to challenges, pursue positive emotional experiences, and lean into post-traumatic growth. Your brain is primed for new learning. It's time to use that superpower.Resources MentionedRattled: How to Calm New Mom Anxiety with the Power of the Postpartum Brain by Nicole Pensak, PhD, PMH-C. What if “home” is not a place, but a feeling your body can learn again? This episode is a deep, unscripted conversation about what it really means to feel at home — not the place you live, but the feeling of being safe, grounded, and fully yourself. Drawing on the energy of the root chakra, the discussion explores why so many people feel disconnected from their foundations — and what it actually takes to come back. From the nervous system and ancestral fear patterns to the surprising power of eye contact, nature, and silence, the conversation is honest, playful, and thought-provoking. It asks the questions most people never stop long enough to ask themselves: Where do I feel safe? What am I afraid of? Do I have enough — and what does enough even mean? If you've ever felt unmoored, ungrounded, or like you're living someone else's version of home, this one's for you.----------Episode Chapters:00:00:29 Introduction00:01:56 What Does Home Actually Mean?00:03:18 Belonging — The Etymology and the Feeling00:06:27 Basic Needs, the Nervous System, and Why We Feel Unsafe00:07:51 Root Chakra, Fear, and the Urge to Control00:10:55 Why We're All a Little Bit Broken — And That's Okay00:17:51 How Do We Become Whole Again?00:19:30 What Is Grounding, Really?00:21:20 Nature as a Nervous System Reset00:26:54 People as a Grounding Force — Eye Gazing and Human Connection00:31:05 The Most Important Questions to Ask Yourself00:34:03 Stillness, Silence, and Slowing Down00:35:55 Speed Up to Slow Down — The Case for Doing Both00:38:37 Directing Awareness and Giving to the Earth00:39:13 A Bird, a Meditation, and a Full Circle Moment----------Mentions & Resources:Michael Henri's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/michaelyoga.pt/ Byron de Marsé's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/byronyoga/The IN Movement Instagram: https://www.instagram/com/the_in_movement/Practices referenced:Kapalabhati (Breath of Fire)Eye gazing (witnessing practice)Meditation and movement for nervous system regulationEarthing / grounding devices (mentioned briefly)Yoga poses mentioned:Kapotasana (Pigeon Pose) — noted as one of Byron's top three posesConcepts explored:Root Chakra (Muladhara) and its development from womb to one year oldGenerational / ancestral fear patternsScarcity vs. abundance inventory exercise"Speed up to slow down" nervous system technique----------Tags: root chakra, grounding, home, safety, nervous system, fear, belonging, yoga philosophy, chakras, ancestral trauma, inner work, trust, abundance, scarcity, mindfulness, breathwork, nature connection, presence, stillness, self-inquiry, meditation, yoga, personal growth, community, mental wellness

Aussie shares tumbled on Thursday as President Trump's hawkish speech on Iran rattled global markets, reversing Wednesday's strong gains. The ASX 200 fell sharply, with energy stocks initially rising on oil price spikes before reversing. Defensive sectors like consumer staples and utilities outperformed as investors sought safety amid escalating geopolitical tensions. Markets will be closed for the Easter long weekend, with the US market reopening Monday, setting up a potentially volatile Tuesday session for Australian investors. You've done the therapy. You've learned the tools. You've processed your past. So why does your nervous system still feel like it's on edge? In this relatable and validating coaching session, Christine works with Kate, who has spent over a decade deeply committed to her healing journey. Despite major progress—healthy relationships, career growth, and emotional awareness—she still experiences intense nervous system reactions like anxiety, overwhelm, and shutdown. If you've ever felt like "I've done so much work… so why am I still triggered?"—this episode is for you. Christine offers a powerful reframe that shifts everything: what if your sensitive nervous system isn't a problem to fix—but a gift to learn how to work with? Through their conversation, they explore how trauma, sensitivity, and subconscious patterns can coexist with real growth—and why healing isn't about becoming "perfectly regulated," but about learning how to support your unique wiring. This episode will help you move out of self-judgment and into a more compassionate, empowered relationship with your nervous system. Press play to discover how to stop trying to fix yourself—and start working with the system you have.    Consider / Ask Yourself Do you feel like you've done a lot of inner work but still get triggered easily? Does your nervous system feel more sensitive or reactive than others around you? Do you find yourself over-preparing or "psyching yourself up" for everyday situations? Are you judging yourself for not being more "healed" by now?   Key Insights and A-Ha's A highly sensitive nervous system is not a flaw—it's a different kind of wiring. Trauma + sensitivity can amplify nervous system responses, but that doesn't mean you're broken. Trying to "fix" yourself often reinforces the belief that something is wrong. Emotional and energetic awareness can be transformed into intuition and connection. Healing includes learning how to care for your system—not forcing it to be different.   How to Deepen the Work Practice shifting from self-judgment to self-acceptance around your nervous system. Explore what "support" looks like for your body rather than trying to override it. Begin incorporating energetic hygiene practices (clearing, grounding, protecting your energy). Experiment with seeing your sensitivity as a strength rather than a liability.   Resource Mentioned in This Episode Rewired: Reparenting Your Inner Child + Reprogramming Your Nervous System Christine references this course as a way to better understand subconscious patterns, support the inner child, and create lasting nervous system change. We dive into the hotel's past, the brutal murder tied to Room 311, and the lingering spirit said to remain there. Meredith and Sabrina share their eerie interactions with the room's resident presence, which started off quiet but did not stay that way. So much unfolded the following night that we had to record an additional segment afterward to cover our new findings and connect the paranormal dots.

In a blow to House Speaker Mike Johnson, four House Republicans joined Democrats to force a vote next year on an extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies. Anger is spiking in both directions: Representative Mike Lawler, one of those four, ripped Johnson's effort to block that vote as “absolute bullshit!” But more MAGA-fied allies of President Trump like Representative Eric Burlison excoriated those rebels for “stabbing the rest of the party in the back.” This is the worst of both worlds for Republicans: They are mired in infighting, yet despite this push by centrists, the subsidies will still expire, bringing political trouble next year. Indeed, Johnson seemed unnerved as he gamely insisted he has “not lost control.” We talked to Grace Segers, who writes well about Congress and policy as a staff writer for The New Republic. We discuss the deeper roots of intra-GOP tensions, how this all might play in the midterms, and the deeper human toll that the expiring subsidies will unleash. Looking for More from the DSR Network?
