Send us a textBeth and Lisa sit down with Carey Blankenship-Kramer, literary agent and author of Ghost Scout's Honor, to talk all things publishing—from crafting irresistible query letters to the harsh realities of publishing economics. Carey shares heartfelt insights on the future of middle grade, the evolving horror genre, and what truly makes her heart sing when reading submissions.Guest Bio: Carey Blankenship-Kramer is a literary agent and author whose debut novel Ghost Scout's Honor (Scholastic, April 2025) is a queer, neurodiverse middle grade horror adventure set in ghost-filled Savannah. Since becoming an agent in 2023, Carey has championed authors across genres, prioritizing marginalized voices. When not agenting or writing, she enjoys tennis, video games, candy, and time with her "small zoo" of pets.Key Discussion Points:About Ghost Scout's Honor: A spooky, empowering middle grade debut featuring determined protagonist Evie and her ghostly adventures. Carey combines horror, Southern charm, and inclusivity.Query Letter Insights: Carey emphasizes the importance of a pitch that hooks instantly. Personal stakes, clear comps, and authentic vibes matter most to her.The State of Middle Grade Publishing: Attention spans are down, publishers aren't effectively reaching younger audiences, and shorter, snappier stories are performing better.Industry Challenges: The impact of tariffs, the collapse of Albert Whitman, and the increasing corporatization of publishing are creating financial and emotional challenges for authors.Trends to Watch: Horror and dystopian genres are rising. Carey sees these as reflections of readers processing real-world fears in safe, fictional environments. What Makes Carey's Heart Sing: Emotional depth layered within horror or fantasy. She seeks stories that offer both escapism and human connection. Conclusion: This candid conversation offers aspiring authors vital knowledge straight from someone who's both querying and reading slush piles. Carey's advice is invaluable for writers like Luna—aspiring novelists navigating today's unpredictable publishing world. From query do's and don'ts to genre shifts and emotional resilience, this episode is a must-listen.Mentioned Links:Carey's Debut: Ghost Scout's Honor (Scholastic, April 2025)Writers With Wrinkles blogSubmit questions for future episodes via Writers With Wrinkles social media, through the 'send us a text' link above or through the podcast blog. Private Information Retrieval (PIR) is a cryptographic primitive that enables a client to retrieve a record from a database hosted by one or more untrusted servers without revealing which record was accessed. It has a wide range of applications, including private web search, private DNS, lightweight cryptocurrency clients, and more. While many existing PIR protocols assume that servers are honest but curious, we explore the scenario where dishonest servers provide incorrect answers to mislead clients into retrieving the wrong results. We begin by presenting a unified classification of protocols that address incorrect server behavior, focusing on the lowest level of resistance—verifiability—which allows the client to detect if the retrieved file is incorrect. Despite this relaxed security notion, verifiability is sufficient for several practical applications, such as private media browsing.Later on, we propose a unified framework for polynomial PIR protocols, encompassing various existing protocols that optimize download rate or total communication cost. We introduce a method to transform a polynomial PIR into a verifiable one without increasing the number of servers. This is achieved by doubling the queries and linking the responses using a secret parameter held by the client. An authority on the Top Secret classified Majestic-12 intelligence documents, Ryan Wood, discussed some of the most profound questions in ufology today. He recently trained the AI software, Chat GPT-4 using around 50 books on UFOs that had been fed into the program in digital form, and then started asking it questions. He found that the quality of answers were so good that he decided to use them in his new book, The AI Ufologist. "It amazed me that as somebody who studied the ufology, that I'd say at least 30-50% of the answers that I got were surprising to me," and were delivered with stunning speed. Querying the program as to the ET agenda, it gave a range of possibilities, including indifference, benevolence, malevolence, and scientific/anthropological inquiry.Wood delved into his study of the TOP SECRET - MAJIC EYES ONLY documents about aliens and ET craft that were leaked to the public. He admitted that while some of the documents were more credible than others, it didn't make sense that all of the approximately 3,500 pages would be faked as some type of psychological operation or warfare. One of the strongest documents, the Special Operations Manual, was thoroughly investigated, he said, and dealt with extraterrestrial technology recovery and disposal. He also touched on his research on the UFO crash in Cape Girardeau in 1941. Wood announced that his father, Dr. Robert M. Wood, a fellow UFO researcher, now 95, had recently suffered a stroke, but they are hopeful he will recover.------------In the latter half, using Vedic, Tropical, and other forms of astrology, Jeff Harman revealed the astrology in play this year and also delved into his work on how astrology connects with our spirituality and spiritual phenomena. Starting later this month, the United States (based on its birth chart) will experience a series of three Pluto returns during the year. This can be a dire or destructive period, he stated, as the Roman Empire fell during a Pluto return (Pluto returns happen about every 250 years). We could see a serious cyber-attack in April or September of this year, he warned. Describing forms of ancient astrology from India, he noted that Vedic astrology pertains to the science of the light of the soul, while Nadi deals with cycles or configurations that affect the ebb and flow of one's life. This month, the United States is completing a Neptune opposition Neptune, which hasn't happened since before the Civil War, he continued. Looking at the political mayhem that's been going on recently, "the parallels are actually kind of eerily similar" to that period just before the Civil War, he commented. Harman views the alignments of the planets as "multi-dimensional portals that interact with each soul and being individually and very uniquely," and astrology as a form of "interactive consciousness." He uses Electional astrology to pick out auspicious times for clearing a person's energy, or to set gemstones. During the last hour, he gave readings for callers.
