Many healthcare organizations know they need an outpatient CDI program, but are tripped up by the most fundamental question: What is the expected return on investment after a considerable upfront investment of time, human capital, training, and technology? Discover the tangible impact of outpatient CDI on revenue, risk capture, provider alignment, and compliance in this special session of Off the Record. Jason Jobes, Senior Vice President, Solutions, Norwood, and Carol Ann Hudson, AVP of Quality and Clinical Operations and Population Health for Lifepoint Health first presented this popular session at the ACDIS 2026 national conference and later for a select virtual audience, and I'm pleased to bring it to my listeners. You'll walk away with a big picture understanding of OP CDI and concrete, operational strategies for transforming your program. If you haven't started yet, consider this your blueprint. Note that “ROI” doesn't only equate to revenue. Return on investment can also come in the form of denials resistant documentation, coding compliance, and improved patient care and value based care alignment through a greater emphasis on patient scheduling. All of which Lifepoint Health experienced. Note: Jason and Carol Ann refer to slides at points of this session; the audio can stand alone but if you prefer you can also download them on the Norwood website (free with registration): https://www.norwood.com/resource/the-roi-of-outpatient-cdi-slide-deck/

If you've been in the CDI space for any length of time you probably know the name Fran Jurcak. After a memorable stint as an ER/trauma nurse, CDI and then consulting, Fran made an impact in ACDIS, serving on the CCDS certification committee and later the ACDIS advisory board. She authored and continues to author the CCDS Exam Study Guide. But what makes Fran unique is that she's never afraid to share her opinion—or make a big career move. Fran made the successful leap from traditional consulting into technology. And in the same manner that marked the rest of her career climbed the ladder all the way up to her current role as Chief Clinical Strategist at Iodine. So yeah, you might very well know Fran. But, what you might NOT know is she is winding down her career—she plans to retire from the industry in October. This episode is a fantastic, wide-ranging conversation recapping her full career. Fran brings a seasoned perspective on technology and CDI few can match, so it seems only natural to debut this episode in conjunction with CDI Week. Listen in as we talk about: Career progression from bedside to CDI to consulting to tech. How did she make the jump—and then advance? What does a fully AI tech enabled CDI position look like? How does the modern CDI professional work in this setting? How much of their clinical knowledge do humans still apply vs. reviewing machine output? How much of a job displacer is advanced AI, but what can't machines do, and who will survive the new reality? What mindset and skills do they need to have? The most important lesson Fran learned in her career. Her stint at CDI consulting OG JA Thomas: Their place in the industry, what she learned from them, pro and con. Her greatest career accomplishment, and where CDI needs to changeWinding down and retirement plans (grandkids and cruising on the docket)
Hospitals are juggling shrinking margins and rising costs while denial volumes remain stubbornly high. In the revenue cycle alone, hundreds of billions are lost annually to preventable errors and inefficiencies—in fact, Access Healthcare CEO Shaji Ravi cites more than $250 billion wasted each year. Meanwhile, payers have accelerated their use of AI to adjudicate and deny claims. Against this backdrop, a practical question has turned urgent: can health systems modernize fast enough without derailing day-to-day cash flow? What would it take to deploy AI across the revenue cycle without a painful rip-and-replace—and actually cut operating costs by half?On this episode of Highway to Health, host David Kemp talks with Shaji Ravi, the CEO of Access Healthcare, which is now part of Smarter Technologies (alongside SmarterDX and Thoughtful AI). They unpack a blueprint for “transformation without disruption,” covering front-end CDI and coding, mid-cycle automation, and back-end denials/AR—plus the governance needed to keep AI reliable and compliant.Key highlights from the episode...Front-end first: Fix documentation and coding upstream (SmarterDX) to reduce downstream rework; 60% of claims pay cleanly, but the persistent 40% problem starts before submission.Agentic AI with humans-in-the-loop: Move beyond RPA's static rules to self-learning “knowledge streams” that spot root causes, propagate fixes across thousands of claims, and are audited by governance teams—no “rogue bots.”Zero-disruption rollout, real ROI: Wrap modular AI around existing EHRs, require “near-zero” IT lift, and phase savings: ~50% people reduction in the first months as agents take on denial management, coding assists, posting, and AR follow-up.Shaji Ravi has spent nearly 30 years in the U.S. healthcare revenue cycle, beginning in the mid-1990s and ultimately co-founding and scaling Access Healthcare to 27,000+ specialists across the U.S., India, and the Philippines. Now the CEO of Access Healthcare within Smarter Technologies, he's leading the integration of service delivery (Access Healthcare), clinical/front-end intelligence (SmarterDX), and agentic automation (Thoughtful AI) to help providers cut costs and improve collections—without changing core systems.

Medicare Advantage plans are about to face unprecedented scrutiny as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) implements a dramatically expanded approach to RADV audits. During this 17-minute podcast, Deborah Curry, risk adjustment programs director at Medical Mutual. breaks down the critical changes that compliance teams need to prepare for immediately. She offers practical strategies for surviving this new audit environment, emphasizing the importance of designated backup personnel, weekly progress huddles, and careful oversight of vendors retrieving medical records. At one time, a physician advisor in a hospital was a rarity. That was then, but this is now, with many healthcare systems having not just one physician advisor, but often many on staff. Does this emerging need signal the deployment of a new position within the physician advisory service team?To learn more, ICD10monitor producers have invited Dr. Juliet B. Ugarte Hopkins to explain when and how this might be accomplished.Dr. Ugarte Hopkins, the chief medical officer for Phoenix Medical Management, Inc., will be the special guest during the next live edition of Talk Ten Tuesday. The popular weekly Internet broadcast will also feature these additional instantly recognizable panelists, who will report more news during their segments:• CDI Report: Cheryl Ericson, Senior Director of Clinical Policy and Education for the vaunted Brundage Group, will have the latest clinical documentation integrity (CDI) updates.• The Coding Report: Christine Geiger, Assistant Vice President of Acute and Post-Acute Coding Services for First Class Solutions, will report on the latest coding news.• News Desk: Timothy Powell, ICD10monitor national correspondent, will anchor the Talk Ten Tuesdays News Desk.• MyTalk: Angela Comfort, veteran healthcare subject-matter expert, will co-host the long-running and popular weekly Internet broadcast. Max talks with airline pilot and Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) Jim Pitman to clear up a persistent avionics myth: that pressing the APR (Approach) key activates a GPS approach. In reality, APR is part of the automatic flight control system (AFCS)—not the GPS navigator. Its function is to arm the flight director's lateral and vertical capture modes so the autopilot (if engaged) can follow the approach path. You can also view a video version of this episode. Just look on the page for August 15, 2025 video. And while you're on that page, please sign up to support the show. Jim's “apples vs. oranges” analogy helps pilots keep the two systems straight: Apples = GPS navigator functions like activating an approach, sequencing waypoints, and CDI scaling. Oranges = AFCS/autopilot functions like heading, NAV, APR, and altitude hold modes. Max and Jim break down common scenarios in G1000 and Garmin Perspective+ cockpits, including: How to know an approach is active (look for magenta waypoint below the approach title). Why APR is often pressed at the wrong time—and how that can disarm modes. When to press NAV instead of APR (e.g., intercepting before clearance). How to interpret scaling modes (LPV, LNAV, terminal, en route) inside the HSI. Using OBS mode effectively and when to turn it off. They also discuss common checkride errors, such as failing to deselect OBS or mishandling the SUSP (suspend) key during a hold. Jim explains why the FAA expects private pilot applicants to demonstrate basic knowledge of installed automation—even without an instrument rating. You'll hear practical techniques to avoid “automation surprise,” like keeping the active flight plan visible, always checking the flight mode annunciator (“scoreboard”) before and after pressing a button, and using the “look–press–look” habit. Finally, they clarify the confusion between loading and activating an approach: often, the best way to start is simply going direct to the IAF or IF rather than pressing “Activate Approach.” Pilots can download Jim's free “G1000 Common Errors & Solutions” guide at flywithjim.com/G1000 and Whether you fly glass-cockpit IFR regularly or are just starting instrument training, this episode will help you use the APR key correctly, fly more precise GPS approaches, and avoid costly autopilot errors.
