The Beatitudes, Pt. 7 | April 6, 2025Pastor Joey SarloLive by earth's values, reap earth's rewards. Live by Kingdom values, reap the Kingdom. Matthew 5:10 (NIV) Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2 Timothy 3:12 (NIV) In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted… We can live the world's way or the Word's way. We just have to choose. Matthew 5:11-12 (NIV) “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me… Rejoice and be glad because great is your reward in Heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” 2 Corinthians 12:10 (NIV) That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Matthew 5:13,14 (NIV) You are the salt of the earth…       You are the light of the world… Matthew 5:16 (NIV) In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.Matthew 24:10 (NKJV) And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. Luke 17:1 (NKJV) Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come...” Proverbs 18:19 (NIV) An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city, and disputes are like the barred gates of a citadel. BLESSED ARE THE PERSECUTED  1. Choose to overlook the offense.Proverbs 10:12 (CEV) ...Love overlooks the wrongs that others do. Proverbs 12:16 (GNT) When a fool is annoyed, he quickly lets it be known. Smart people will ignore an insult. Proverbs 19:11 (NIV) A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense.  Love looks past the behavior and imagines the pain in their life. 2. Keep your heart free from unforgiveness.Luke 11:4 (NLT) “and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.”Colossians 3:13 (NLT) You must make allowance for each other's faults and forgive the person who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 3. Pray, bless, and do good to them.Matthew 5:43-44 (NIV) “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Romans 12:21 (NIV) "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” 4. Remember your eternal reward.

How do You want me to make room for true comfort?

Ps Andy speaks today in the period after Christmas and before the new year. Using the theme of Psalm 84:5 (NIV) "Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage", he examines how life moves from one place to another often. This may be a physical move, a change of relationship, many things, but one key ingredient is for us to keep taking steps of faith and growing in Him. A pilgrimage often involves moving to a place of unknown, many stories in scripture illustrate this. As we walk with Him, we become transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory - 2 Corinthians 3:18. Our pilgrimage from 2024 to 2025 is to carry on growing in God. God is fully committed to growing us into who we really are. We just need to ensure we don't carry on living in the "old skin" so to speak. Andy speaks of three common roadblocks to pilgrims....Fear of unknown (we need to walk by faith)Our limited view of our potential The way others see usAdditionally, three keys to pilgrimage are..Celebrate and commit to the nextBuild strong behind us, build a legacy to lifeAlways plan to exit wellFinal thoughts.....the way we leave affects the way we arrive (as we move on in our lives). It's not about avoiding issues but confronting them with love and wisdom. In our families, workplaces, and communities, we have opportunities to be peacemakers.It's challenging, no doubt. It requires humility, patience, and sometimes sacrifice. But as children of God, we're called to reflect His heart for reconciliation.Prayer:Lord, make us instruments of Your peace. Dealing with the 500-Pound Gorilla in the Room - Conflict  Romans 12:17-18 (NIV)“Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” The effects of unresolved conflict in our relationships.   1.     It can minimize our joy. 2.     It can hinder our communication with God.  1 Peter 3:7 (ESV)“…husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” 3.     It can hinder your sensitivity and worship to God.  Matthew 5:23-24 (NIV)“…if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend's eye. They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you. John 2:23-25 - Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the Passover celebration, many began to trust in him. 24 But Jesus didn't trust them, because he knew all about people. 25 No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person's heart. Matthew 13:10-13 - His disciples came and asked him, “Why do you use parables when you talk to the people?” 11 He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others are not. 12 To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them. 13 That is why I use these parables. For they look, but they don't really see. They hear, but they don't really listen or understand. Who you ask Matthew 7:7-11 - Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. James 1:5 - If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. Who you listen to? Matthew 7:15-23 - Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves. 16 You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree can't produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can't produce good fruit. 19 So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. 20 Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. 21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.' 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God's laws.' Who you build upon Matthew 7:24-27 - Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won't collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn't obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

If we are committed to the Lord Jesus, we walk in victory in an eternal sense, but what about in a temporal sense? How do we use the tools God has given us to be immune to the lies of this world? Proverbs 1:7 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Fear of the Lord used to baffle me, so I will share with you what helps me understand the fear of the Lord and how it is different from what I thought it was. We will also talk about how that tiny little phrase can help us be immune to some of the lies of this world. When we are immune to it, and when kids watch us display this immunity, then it passes on to them. Our children will continue to be under assault; for instance, take into account the University of Columbia. They are determined to create an “environment in the faculty of education that is inclusive of gender and sexual identity.” They are so good at making this sound so reasonable and loving, but how do we use the Word of God to point out that it isn't any of those things? How do we have spiritual immunity that we pass on to our kids? We can also point to this: an article from the BBC stated that “Black women most likely to die in medieval London plague.” Well, natural human skepticism can say, how many black women were in London in medieval times? But we can also look at the source and once again look at the Word of God. Scriptures Violence from the start “Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him.” (Genesis 4:8 NRSV) Vision OT - time when the lion will lie down the lamb; peace-bringer will come; peace between humans and God - “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them…. The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent's food. What would we say to the argument that there is a greater good when we resist evil? What would we say if we were Jewish? What would we say if we were Ukrainian? Conclusion What this means for us….. “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. You may say, that's true, but if I go to Jesus, he's not under my control either. He lets things happen that I don't understand. He doesn't do things according to my plan, or in a way that makes sense to me. But if Jesus is God, then he's got to be great enough to have some reasons to let you go through things you can't understand. Matthew 4:17 - From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” John 19:10 - “Why don't you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” John 18:33-36 - Then Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. “Are you the king of the Jews?” he asked him. 34 Jesus replied, “Is this your own question, or did others tell you about me? 35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate retorted. “Your own people and their leading priests brought you to me for trial. Why? What have you done?” 36 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. True peace with others is the heart of God Love them Serve them Peace with Ourselves Philippians 4:6-7 (GW)  //  Never worry about anything. Do you approach your daily quiet time as a task to check off rather than a fresh encounter with a friend?  We're going to be talking about all of this in today's episode. Join me with Jodie Niznik for how to meditate on the word of God and the benefits of meditation. Quotables from the episode: I was leading a very busy life working “for” God and ignoring good boundaries and limits on my time and energy. This led me to a crisis point where I nearly left the ministry. Lectio Divina (Latin for sacred reading) is a slow reading of the Word where we invite the Spirit to help us notice what he wants us to notice and then have a conversation with him about whatever he shows us. Meditation is something we need to reclaim because it was God's idea in the first place! God is a good God even when things don't feel “good.” God knows exactly who he created you to be and exactly what you are going through. He has also created us to live full and abundant lives. If we are willing to create space for God in our lives, He will meet us there. No matter what you are going through right now, God wants to accompany you through it.   Scripture References: Psalm 1:1-3, NIV Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. John's situation has him wondering what Jesus' ultimate plan is. Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?" ‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭21‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. In seasons where you're struggling to see the hand of God in your life – look for it in the lives of others. Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ So he replied to the messengers, "Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor." Isaiah‬ ‭35‬:‭5‬-‭6‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. Miracles on Earth point us to the power and faith we are to have in the Miracle Worker, Jesus. Acts‬ ‭2‬:‭22‬-‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him." Wonders don't erase wrestling. Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me." Stumble = skandalizó: to put a snare (in the way), hence to cause to stumble. Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭24‬-‭25‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ After John's messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces." Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'" Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭28‬ ‭NIV‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ "I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he." Giving your life to Jesus is a sacrifice always worth making. "Faith is living, bold trust in God's grace, so certain of God's favor that it would risk death a thousand times trusting in it.
