Episode 146: From Actor to Therapist—Reclaiming Identity & Embracing Self-Energy with Adeshola Nnamdi, LMFT What does it look like to live with deep intention—and how can our past lives, creativity, and cultural roots shape the therapists we become? In this episode of The Innovative Therapist Podcast, I had the absolute pleasure of talking with Adeshola Nnamdi, MA, LMFT—an actor who made a pivot into clinical psychology and psychotherapy, is IFS-trained, and deeply passionate about storytelling, healing, and identity. Shola is the first male guest on the podcast—and the first to serenade us too! We covered so much in this heartfelt, funny, and powerful conversation: Shola's journey from acting to therapy Why he changed his name to honor his Nigerian roots What creativity and presence really look like in therapy His experience with Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) How therapists can reclaim joy, connection, and authenticity in their work From the Stage to the Therapy Room Before becoming a therapist, Shola had a rich acting career—appearing in many films and on television, including on a hit NBC sitcom called The Single Guy that aired between Seinfeld and Friends, working with Spike Lee (check out the video just below this paragraph!), and even hanging out at Saturday Night Live. But despite his outward success, he found himself burnt out, disconnected, and chasing applause rather than purpose. Eventually, through sobriety and soul-searching, he found a new path: one rooted in service, meaning, and connection. “What would my life look like if I stopped seeking validation and just trusted?” Therapy as Art: The Performance of Presence Shola's artistic background deeply informs his work as a therapist. He describes therapy as a kind of performance art—not because we're faking it, but because we're bringing our full selves into the room and responding in real time. “Bad acting is pushing… having an agenda. That can happen in therapy too.” IFS, in particular, allowed him to slow down, be present, and trust in both his clients and himself. Instead of working from parts that strive or fix, he now leans into the power of Self-energy—and it's transformed his clinical work. Why He Changed His Name—and What It Means Shola also shares the powerful story of changing his name from Shawn Michael Howard to Adeshola Nnamdi, a decision rooted in personal healing and cultural reclamation. After George Floyd's murder and years of reflection, he realized he no longer wanted to carry a name passed down from a history of enslavement. “I didn't want to die with a slaveholder's name on my tombstone.” The name Adeshola means “he brings prosperity” and Nnamdi means “my father lives.” It's a name he carries with honor, intention, and power. Creativity, Joy, & the Therapist's Zone of Genius We also explored how creativity plays a crucial role in the therapist's life—not just through hobbies, but through presence, flexibility, and flow. “We're creating in there. It's art.” Shola's Zone of Genius is connection. Whether on stage or in the therapy room, he brings joy, attunement, and aliveness to the people around him. He's passionate about helping others do the same—both professionally and personally. Want to Feel More Alive in Your Work? If you've ever questioned your career path, felt boxed in by your therapist role, or longed to bring more you into your work—this episode is for you. Looking for a Therapist in California or Arizona? Shola offers individual, couples, and group therapy and brings warmth, wisdom, and a strong grounding in both EFT and IFS.

People launch businesses for wildly different reasons…Escape the corporate lifeMake a lot of moneyCreate a meaningful product or serviceHave flexibility in daily lifeBuild relationships and be seenThey're chasing something that they believe that business, as a vehicle, can give them. But once you're in the midst of creating the business or doing the new type of work, you realize it might not always give you what you are looking for.For one thing, you don't achieve freedom once and check it off the list. Purpose isn't something you discover and then never have to think about again. Money comes and goes (often). Running a business isn't a static experience—it's a constantly shifting process. And the sooner we recognize that, the sooner we can start to see our business for what it actually is: something that evolves alongside of us, and even changes depending on the day, depending on how we feel, or how we're choosing to show up.I remember learning a tough lesson about freedom and business.I remember walking down the street on a beautiful sunny Tuesday, heading to get some work done (this was 2018), and then realizing I was feeling completely anxious about the day ahead. On paper, I was free. I didn't have a boss, a fixed schedule, and no one telling me what to do. But internally, I wasn't free. I was carrying stress, worry, and pressure with me everywhere I went. I couldn't enjoy the sunshine, and I was feeling a bit terrible walking into the coffee shop to check my email. I learned that external freedom—no boss, no set hours—doesn't mean much if you're not also free inside. I hadn't considered that I would need to learn internal freedom as much as I would learn about creating external freedom. That's a tough lesson to learn, and it made me question what I was really after at work in the first place. I had forgotten where I started, or maybe I had evolved and found myself seeking something different. What Do You Want from Your Work?At different phases, our work can provide us with different things. I often find that businesses give you exactly what you need when you need it. Sometimes, I see business owners who really need stability in their business because their home life is having a huge crisis, and it somehow supports them through. Othertimes, a business owner is undecided, and the business forces them one way or another. What we want and need evolves, and maybe now for you, it's more about your creativity, your relationships or finding financial security for the first time. The best thing you can do is check back in with your current set of needs. What do you want, right now?If you look for it, you'll find it.Instead of waiting for some distant milestone—freedom, success, purpose—how can you start connecting to those things today? It exists there, however small, and if you recognize where it exists, you can put effort into expanding that part of your work and life to have more of it.Right now, I'm really focused on my own creativity and experiencing my own creativity. My work is giving me these beautiful moments of feeling fully creative and fully alive through my work and writing and video creation. I'm seeking this out, I'm recognizing when it's there and when it's not. I'm allowing myself to give myself more of what I want. You'd be surprised at how much of success (in any area) is about allowing and embracing it instead of pushing it away. Can you allow yourself to have the freedom, purpose, or income from your business that you've been seeking? What if you already have the freedom or meaning you're after? Look for it in the small ways, or recognize what your work is telling you about what you're truly after – like a reflection in the mirror….Your business isn't going to give you freedom or purpose—you get to discover it for yourself through your business as the vehicle for your growth and exploration.I wish I had been more grateful to have noticed my insecurity and stress in the moment, seeing how my work was telling me what I needed to hear and showing me what I needed to see. It sent me on a path of finding internal freedom after I found it externally. I'm on another type of pathway now – one related to creativity, and I believe that I'm more aware of its gift to me now.

We've been conditioned to believe that work falls into one of two extremes: either you're grinding non-stop, pushing yourself to exhaustion, or you've mastered the elusive work-life balance. But what if that's a false choice? As a creator, I've realized that some of my work doesn't feel like work at all. It can be play, it can be art, and it can feel deeply satisfying. Yet, there's pressure to justify how we spend our time, as if every choice determines our worth. Join The Co-op - The Membership for Online Businesses Connect with Abagail Instagram All the Links! In today's episode, I challenge these ideas. What if we stopped obsessing over whether we're working “the right way” and embraced creativity for what it is? Something that brings us joy. In Habakkuk Ch 3, the prophet admits, “O Lord, I've heard Your speech, and I was afraid.” Yes, when we look at the world, and we see that prophecy of violence and destruction is part of the preparation for the Kingdom of Christ, we are afraid at what we see, afraid of what's going on. But this is the key: Habakkuk continues his prayer, “O Lord revive Your Work, make Your Work known in the midst of the years and remember mercy…” The prophet is asking God to revive His Work, to bring back to life something that is dead – in the midst of violence! This is the vision God gave me up on the mountain this summer! A revival of God's Work in our days! This vision is for an ‘appointed time'! I believe we are living in the appointed time NOW! Yes, we're afraid, but Lord, revive Your Work in the midst of it! Christian, as we see the unfolding situation, this is how we should pray, “O God, revive Your Work! Raise up the spiritually dead, fill the Church with new Power!” This is why, aged 92, I'm fighting on, telling the young people everywhere, this is the time when God will fulfil the vision! And this is the vision: “Look at the nations, watch, be amazed! For I am going to do something in your days that you wouldn't even believe if you were told!” I take this very strongly. It's a challenge to me, in my life. God is going to do something in MY days, something amazing!

"Dream Big" is our series to kick off 2025 at Fusion Christian Church where we look to set godly goals. In this message, Pastor Zac lays out three biblical goals which we should all set for ourselves.Make it Your Goal to Grow Closer to GodThe first of our three goals is to grow closer to God. If you don't aim at it, you won't hit it! Aim to grow closer to God and make an effort to do so. God created you, so his plan for your life is better than yours. Getting closer to God gets you where you need to go. Growing with him also leads to a life of significance. Here are several ways you can grow closer to God:-Turn from sin and turn toward God.-Read and memorize your bible-Never stop praying-Be a faithful member of God's houseMake it Your Goal to Love Your Friends and Family MoreJust as with God, you need to put effort into your relationships with other people if you want them to succeed. You must aim at better relationships by putting in the effort! Here are a few ways to improve your relationships:-Tell your friends and family you love them and why they matter-Set punch-out and punch-in times (Make time for the people you care about!)-Take care of yourself physically and spiritually-Get your finances in order and be generous (Nobody likes a moocher!)Make it Your Goal to Excel at Your WorkIn all things, Christians are called to work "as unto the Lord." The work that you do, whether good or ill, is a reflection of your character. As a Christian, your character is an example of Christ. Decide that you are going to do good work so that you represent Christ well.
