We're continuing to talk about tipping culture in the United States, as well as some of the broader implications it has on society. It's an important topic if for no other reason than the fact that it's now practically ubiquitous, and touches the lives of many many people. *I chose a special poem for the end of this episode, in acknowledgment of yesterday's global strike in support of the call for ceasfire. It was written by recently deceased Palestinian poet Refaat Alareer. It should go without saying, but I will say it: I do not support discrimination. I do not support genocide.
The beginning of a closer look at American tipping culture.

The practice of tipping is widespread across the world. But when to tip, how much and to whom are questions that often stump people. For example, in the US, it is customary to tip a restaurant server anywhere between 15-25%. In Japan, however, tipping is considered rude. But should restaurants be collecting a mandatory service charge, irrespective of whether you are happy with the service you have received? This has become the core of an unsavoury debate in India, after a government order banned restaurants from levying a default service charge on food bills. The restaurant association is challenging this ban, saying it isn't illegal and that the amount is important for staff welfare. Many also argue that Indians are not always “generous tippers”. So, should diners have the discretion to accept or reject charges beyond their food bill? And will removing a service charge hurt an industry already suffering from the ill-effects of the pandemic? In this edition of WorklifeIndia, we discuss whether a service charge should be mandatory when eating out. Presenter: Devina Gupta Contributors: Pradeep Shetty, joint honorary secretary, FHRAI; Nikita Varma, food influencer; Rekha Agarwal, lawyer, consumer rights activist

Hindi News (हिंदी समाचार), Why are restaurants adamant on taking service charge होटल- रेस्टोरेंट पर ग्राहकों से सर्विस चार्ज लेने पर लगी रोक।
As a businessman, let's hear what he has to say about this guideline by the government. UNCUT. A standoff between the government and the restaurants on service charge and a possible clampdown on the anvil. Who really benefits from service charge and what's the legal stand? Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday put the stamp on India's entry into the US-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. India has joined the bloc along with 12 other nations -- including the US -- to create a geostrategic counter to China's growing clout in the region by ramping up economic cooperation. While these are early days and the final contours of India's participation are yet to emerge, there could be some areas of friction too.Why India should tread with caution? From the negotiation tables in Tokyo, let us turn our focus to a storm brewing on the dining tables of restaurants back home. It is obviously over the bills. On Monday, the government said that eateries were illegally charging service tax from consumers. The eateries association, on its part, has denied it, saying that it was a matter of individual restaurant policy. So are eateries taking service charges illegally. We take a dive into this debate and find out more. After the debate over services tax at eateries, let us turn our focus to markets. Soaring inflation, global central bank policies and the Russia-Ukraine war have dampened sentiment across global financial markets. So how does one navigate this uncertain phase? Will investors have to endure more pain ahead as their returns get pruned? What does S Naren, executive director and chief investment officer at ICICI Prudential AMC think of the developments. Business Standard's Puneet Wadhwa caught up with him to understand his investment mantra. Pandemic and subsequent war in Ukraine has indeed wreaked havoc on markets, with no relief in sight. Meanwhile, the threat of another virus is looming large over Europe. Over 170 cases of monkeypox have been reported in Europe and in four other countries outside the union. India too is on the guard. Rob & Rob are back and it's time for more listener questions! And Jason's kicking us off with a corker. Jason is currently saving to purchase his first property and reckons by next year he'll have around £20,000 saved! What he wants to know is should he use this as his deposit, purchase a lower value property and get his foot firmly on the ladder or hold out, save some more, and purchase a higher value property? It's a difficult decision, so what advice have Rob & Rob got for him? Next up, we've got a question from Mike. Following a change in the property management company that manages his property in Northampton, he's recently received his service charge demand. And whilst he expected a potential increase, he was shocked to find an increase of a whopping 92.5% compared to 2021! What Mike would like to know is are service charge changes set in stone, or can he challenge this? And if he can, is it a fairly straightforward process or is it a long and costly one? We know with inflation pushing up costs across the board this might be a question on a few people's lips. Tune in to find out what the guys have got to say. Do you have a buy-to-let or property investment related question for Rob & Rob? People who drive for a living say high gas prices are gouging a hole in their profits. Taxi companies in Corner Brook say they're struggling, so they've asked the City to let them charge a two-dollar per litre fuel service charge for every ride, when gas is above $1.65 a litre. Wade King owns two cab companies. Todd Flynn is Director of Protective Services with the City of Corner Brook.

Diners and industry veterans alike are familiar with front and back of house. In this episode we look at a new concept designed to make restaurant workers' pay more equitable - regardless of their position on the staff. It's called heart of house. Jesse Cool designed and implemented the concept at her Bay Area restaurant, Flea Street. She dives into the disparity between front and back of house workers that stems from the tipping system and explains why she abandoned that for an equally distributed service charge. Pay has shifted dramatically and her staff members' roles have changed too. Jesse is most inspired by the sense of unity she feels at Flea Street after implementing heart of house, but defends the model from an economic standpoint as well. Have a question you want answered? Selin Kiazim says the reopening of her restaurants post lockdown has given her a blank canvas on which to draw on, which is why the time is right for her to scrap service charge.
Happy Tuesday! We're back with another Ask Rob & Rob. First up this week is Jonathan who recently got married (congratulations!). His wife had purchased a property a few years ago but unfortunately it's now worth 10% less than what she bought it for. But she does have 50% equity tied up in it. So here's the big question: Should they sell the property at a 10% loss and purchase their ideal property, or do they release some of the equity and then rent it out? Which is going to be the more profitable option for Jonathan and his wife? Our second caller is Serena. She has £100,000 to invest and knows that a vanilla buy-to-let is probably the best strategy for her. She doesn't want to commit a lot of time and her goal is to have a decent income stream so she's got pretty much everything sorted. But what she isn't sure on is the location and the type of property she should be investing in. At the minute Serena is wondering if she should buy one, or a couple of new build flats in either Leeds or Manchester city centre - if she can stretch that far. But she's concerned the service charge is going to be astronomical on these kinds of properties. So, should Jonathan sell or keep his property and does Serena need to be worried about service charge? Tune in to find out what advice The Robs have for them. Do you have a buy to let or property investment related question for Rob & Rob? Should you leave a cash tip or is card just as good, do you prefer a service charge or would you get rid of tipping altogether? Sheila Dillon finds out when she meets the co-founder of Hawksmoor Restaurants William Beckett to talk about our attitude to tipping in the UK and how it varies from city to city. Peter Davies of WMT Accountants describes how high-profile scandals have dented our trust in tipping and Alex Wrethman of the Charlotte Group of restaurants explains how that could be hurting businesses now. Sheila then draws on examples from the US where Saru Jayaraman is President of the Restaurant Opportunities Centre. Jayaraman explains how the system in many states has forced workers to rely on tips to earn the minimum wage and been a cause of poverty and sexual harassment. We hear from the poet Jan Beatty about waiting tables in the US for 15 years and then look at one of the most forward-thinking tipping models in the world, dreamed up by restaurateur Danny Meyer who founded New York’s Union Square Cafe and Gramercy, and ask whether it could be rolled out in the UK. Presenter: Sheila Dillon Producer: Tom Bonnett

Join James Daglish, partner at city law firm Goodman Derrick and Guy Cochrane, senior associate partner at Daniel Watney, as they discuss the rationale behind the changes, what they entail and, crucially, how to gear up for implementation.

Things are pretty light this time of the year which is a good thing but there are some big ships that will be docking. Lastly, we have the news section which is typically sparse but this time we actually have a quite a few things to go over including: the unfortunate closing of Legends Pub in Palm Beach (a restaurant that I was very fond of and whose owners, Scott and Leslie, I interviewed in One Happy Podcast) and some rumors going around that involve the Holiday Inn being sold to the Riu. Also, something that I’m excited about came from Amal and Peter of Alfie’s. They’re trying out this new thing on the restaurant called their Late Night Menu. Make sure to check them out! If there’s anything at all that you would like to suggest for the show or simply want to relay feedback, please do send me an email at curt@onehappypodcast.com or drop a voice message on our hotline number (302) 635-0815.
Welcome back to another episode of This Week in Aruba, which covers the events from Monday, April 23rd to Sunday, April 29th or also known as timeshare week 16. My shout out for this week goes to Peter and Amal from Alfie’s in Aruba. Originally from Canada but now full-time residents of Aruba, Peter and Amal who I interviewed on episode 79 of One Happy Podcast purchased a bar and have never looked back. Alfie's in Aruba almost immediately became one of the favorite restaurants on the island and that is mostly due to the owners focus on a great experience and even better customer service. They serve pub fare so think burgers, rib, and awesome pulled pork. And something that is completely unique to the island is their amazing poutine. If you’re someone who ever thought of opening up a bar in Aruba you really should listen to One Happy Podcast episode 79. I include this so you may plan your beach days or schedule accordingly. The news section is probably the most sparse area of this podcast. This is because I usually only include topics which are relevant to us visitors or tourists. One thing that should be of interest to all visitors of the island is safety and I will discuss how the island strengthened their security measures by using the technology available at their disposal. I will also talk about the safety of the wildlife and the state of the water in Aruba. If there’s anything at all that you would like to suggest for the show or simply want to relay feedback, please do send me an email at curt@onehappypodcast.com or drop a voice message on our hotline number (302) 635-0815. Quick note, I would like to apologize in advance for next week because This Week in Aruba will be posted a day later as I will be out of town.
PLUS Kareem Abdul Jabbar wrote an article about the mismanagement and treatment of NBA cheerleaders. And Cardi B revealed via Saturday Night Live she's pregnant!
We're joined today by everyone's favorite jar, Franqi French. We start this episode with some of Franqi's trying-to-raise-a-daughter stories. Then, a few listener emails get us talking about some of the finer points of comedy writing and podcasting. After that, we discuss the recent drama with how Patreon does business. And we close with some thougts on the firing and rehiring of Sam Seder by MSNBC.
