For our first episode of Season 7, we are humbled to welcome Fr. Tom Greene, SJ, the Provincial of the U.S. Central and Southern Province of the Jesuits. Fr. Greene was the one who first conceived of this mission to the U.S.-Mexico border in south Texas over three years ago. In this episode, he shares the origin story of this mission and what inspired the idea to send Jesuits to the border to try something new. Before becoming a Jesuit, Fr. Greene went to law school and practiced as a lawyer, so he also talks about the ways he has put his legal background to use in his Jesuit life. Speaking of trying something new, the border is marked by changes in policy that can often come suddenly and unexpectedly, requiring new ways of responding. Brian talks about an Executive Order from June 4th and how that impacted the ability to help vulnerable cases. He shares the story of Juan, Francy, and their kids who missed their CBP One appointment in April because they were kidnapped. They had to restart the process, and are still waiting for a new appointment all these months later. Joe talks about one of the recent fraud updates for the CBP One app that requires every member of a travel group over 14 years old to take a live photo to confirm an appointment. Sounds like a good idea, until you hear the case of Breanne and Maylene that shows how a change in policy can have devastating unexpected consequences. Listen to this episode to hear how these changes have required the Del Camino team to think creatively about how to respond to the ever-changing dynamics.

Join us for an enlightening Statehouse Spotlights podcast episode as we dive into the critical topic of private vs. public school accountability. In 2023, we witnessed a surge of education choice program expansions across the nation, with states like Arizona leading the charge in adopting universal or near-universal parental choice programs a couple years before. However, with this wave of educational freedom comes a pressing question: How are private schools being held accountable for the public funds they receive through parental choice programs like education scholarship accounts (ESAs)? Critics often raise concerns about the accountability of private schools compared to their public counterparts, who face standardized testing and state-mandated performance evaluations among other regulations. Yet, proponents of private education argue that accountability exists in different forms for private schools. In this episode, hosts Tom Greene and Ashley Mullins along with ExcelinEd in Action Executive Director Patricia Levesque tackle the nuanced debate surrounding accountability measures for public, charter and private schools. From the metrics that matter to the consequences for underperforming schools, we explore the complexities of accountability in education. This week, Dr. Victoria Sanchez of the University of South Florida, and Dr. Shannon Basham of Phonak, join host Amyn Amlani to discuss the ACHIEVE study, a multi-year randomized controlled trial examining the effects of best-practice hearing care interventions on cognitive decline in older adults. The study results found that for those at higher risk of cognitive decline, providing hearing aids and counseling slowed cognitive decline by 48% over 3 years compared to a control group. The hearing intervention utilized comprehensive audiological evaluations, evidence-based device fitting, and patient education and support. While additional analyses continue, these significant findings demonstrate the potential impact optimized hearing care can have on supporting long-term cognitive health. The panelists emphasize that complex research like ACHIEVE requires interdisciplinary expertise and collaboration. As the field increasingly focuses on the connections between hearing and cognition, audiologists will need to take a more holistic approach in managing patients while partnering closely with physicians, researchers and others. Resources like Phonak's upcoming ECHHO training program will help clinicians translate recent research on hearing and cognitive health into effective patient care and communication. With cognitive decline emerging as a major health issue, audiology has an opportunity to play a central role in providing interventions that support cognitive health in aging adults. Alright folks, happy holidays as we're closing in on that time of the year. We hope everyone is happy with final year gripes by Huw. Mostly the utter disgust with Apple and their system of running technology. We dive into the awkward comedy genius of one Tom Greene for some odd reason. Then we do the deep dive into football and the World Cup. We have the traditions down as we did a quick flashback of the finals and the greatest game ever played. We somehow end up in films and some new releases coming with the fall of the DCEU and the fired stars left in the rubble. We finally give up a couple movies willing to see in the theater in 23. We hope everyone has a safe holidays and a good time with loved ones.

As a culture, we are being bombarded with so many dooms' day theories and predictions, some predicting the likes of a Depression-era level of economic and social hit in the coming months. In this conversation our guest Tom Greene brings a measure of hope to our listeners by shedding light on the truth of these words as they stand next to the Truth of God's Word. This week, Patrick Drake, a product designer for Dealerware, an automotive tech company located in Austin, discusses how you can't separate UI from UX because they inherently enhance each other towards a product's overall goals. He discusses why demonstrating sound problem solving in your work and the ability to walk someone through your thought process is the most effective skill a designer can develop. Patrick shares his process for usability testing, downplaying biometric eye tracking in favor of fast, high-fidelity prototypes because you don't have to guess what someone is thinking after a biometrics test. We talk about using parallel work examples to get a job doing something new and how sending perfect work isn't as important as just showing some level of competency when starting out.  Lastly Patrick compares the autonomy and depth within an in-house design role vs the fast turnaround of project based freelance work at a design agency - it's all about the iterative self-sustaining loop of finding and improving novel problems.SHOW NOTESDovetail - A User Research PlatformJohnathan Stark - Freelance Mentor Articulating Design Decisions, by Tom Greene
