Justin Roberts didn't set out to be a children's musician, but his tunes and inventive lyrics brought him success and national attention.

"Fighting Spirit: A Combat Chaplain's Journey," a powerful new documentary film co-produced by Paulist Productions, will be in select theaters around the United States on November 8, 2024. In this episode of Deacons Pod, the deacons speak about the film with Paulist Fr. Tom Gibbons, vice president of Paulist Productions and an executive producer of "Fighting Spirit." The film shares the stories of multiple U.S. military chaplains who died while serving. It is framed by the story of Justin Roberts, a former U.S. Army chaplain, as he attends the long-delayed funeral in 2021 of Servant of God Emil Kapaun, a priest and U.S. Army chaplain from Kansas, who died in 1953 as prisoner of war in North Korea. “Fighting Spirit” was co-produced by the U.S. Army Chaplains Corps. Actor Chris Pratt also is an executive producer on the project. ABOUT THE SHOW: Deacons Pod is a podcast for everyone. Gerald Dowd is the rare working musician who is actually making his living directly from his drumming gigs with an extremely wide range of musicians, from Eddie Vedder to Mavis Staples to Robbie Fulks to Neko Case to Justin Roberts, not to mention fantastic players that you may not have heard or be aware of. In addition, he's a songwriter of the first order playing a brand of country music that tips its cap just slightly without ever aping a certain artist or style. On his most recent solo release Fathers Day, his songs are straight from his soul and reflect exactly who he's become as a father and husband making his way in life, with narratives sometimes hilarious but also achingly poignent and heartfelt. After graduating from music school in Boston in the late 90's studying jazz and classical percussion, he found his way to Chicago and spent 20 years traveling the US and the world playing every small venue with various outfits, at which point he'd embedded himself within the Chicago scene and became the go-to hire for so many. Gerald is also a crazy man by staging fundraising events called the Day Of The Dowd in which he plays drums for 13 hours straight with 12 different bands to raise money for local food banks, pantries and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Great rap with the real deal.

Someone at Busted Open (either J-Hood or Matt Camp) said it was the best YB match in 4 years. * Prince Nana gave an update on Swerve Strickland, saying mentally he is one of the most dangerous men in AEW. But physically he is not cleared to compete just yet. Interrupted by the debuting Montel Vontavious Porter… MVP. He offers Nana his business card … when Swerve is ready to ascend to the mountain top where he belongs… please give him my business card… and let him know I'll be ready to talk… BUSINESS. * “The Glamour” Mariah May def. Yuka Sakazaki in a pretty good match. After the match, Mariah goes to attack Yuka, but Willow Nightingale makes the save; only to be interrupted by the returning Mina Shirakawa. * Jon Moxley d. Darby Allin to win Darby's Title Shot at WrestleDream. Post-match Bryan Danielson sneaks up behind Mox and chokes him with a necktie… while Justin Roberts was at ringside. Our SONG TO CHEW this week is PEACEFUL FEET, from my 'Grow It At Home' album.  I wrote it as part of a challenge sent out from Rounder Kids Records asking some of the best artists in children's and family music to create a one-minute song for an album called "HEAR AND GONE IN 60 SECONDS" It included my friends Bill Harley, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, Justin Roberts, Kim and Reggie Harris, Tom Paxton, Beethoven's Wig, Dan Crow, Dave Kinnoin, Parachute Express and Joanie Bartels, just to name a few!  I wrote a song that was silly, but also had larger themes of world peace, and we'll talk about that process.
