Having survived the last transition from bull to bear, today's community-owned networks are discovering the merits of curated communities aligning around shared passion. In episode 2 of Building At The Edges, Jess explores the future of value creation through the lens of passion with guest Gaby Goldberg. Gaby is an investor at TCG Crypto, an early stage crypto fund. Their emerging thesis on “investing in passion” could be described as shorthand for the intimacy and connection that comes from building intentionally with small groups of dedicated people. While much of the crypto space incentivizes people to get out, fork, or rage quit, the most promising products and experiences will arguably come from the communities where people are incentivized to stay and create.
Gaby Goldberg, an investor from TCG Crypto, joins Deana and Natasha to talk about storytelling using blockchain data. They go into the many opportunities in contextualizing on chain data, and somehow manage to bring the conversation around to Taylor Swift and true crime podcasts. Then, Natasha and Deana talk about ‘The Innovators Dilemma' live from Bogotá, and chat about the Howey Test and Bechdel Test to close out the ep. Sign up to the weekly newsletter. The same story plays out again and again in consumer tech. Starting out, platforms share interests with their creators and users, and they make product and business decisions accordingly. But as platforms scale, interests diverge. Incentives change. Creator empowerment and user experience make way for advertiser appeasement. What's in the best interest of the platform is no longer good for its creators and users—alienating them in the process. If you're a regular listener of this podcast, you've probably already guessed the next question: Can tokens help solve this problem? For this episode, we're joined by Gaby Goldberg to find out. Gaby spends her time investing for The Chernin Group, placing bets on the future of consumer tech. She thinks tokens could enable an innovative consumer tech landscape where user and network incentives are aligned. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!

Web 3 has become the canonical term to describe new internet products that are decentralized, user owned, and orchestrated with tokens. It is compared to web 1 where the internet was user owned, but highly technical and not user-friendly and web 2 which formed centralized, and eventually extractive platforms that offered consumer friendly experiences and enabled billions of people to access the internet. DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations) have become the primary social organizing entity within web 3. Gaby describes it as basically a group chat with a shared bank account. As a member of a DAO, you own tokens to that community, and therefore fractional ownership of the group and ‘skin in the game'. You have liquidity so you can leave the DAO as soon as you sell your tokens. In this episode, Gaby helps us understand the emerging social behaviors and products that are being created within the web 3 paradigm and why they are better solutions to today's socialization needs. She helps us walk through web1, 2, and 3 and their distinct characteristics, we explore the idea of the modern friend, we get into detail on the mechanisms of DAOs and some of its current benefits as well as flaws and potential solutions.ABOUT THE GUESTGaby Goldberg is an investor at TCG Crypto, where she focuses on the firm's investments at the intersection of consumer and crypto. Today is the last episode of the year, and so we're celebrating by doing something a little different. Rather than have a single guest on, we invited 11 senior On Deck employees to answer a single question: What trend do you expect to change, emerge, or accelerate in 2022? To help them answer honestly, we were very clear that these aren't necessarily predictions. Instead, my colleagues were instructed to think about patterns they've noticed this past year and project how they might shift or continue in 2022.Next year, we'll revisit this analysis and ask our colleagues where they were right, where they were wrong, and why. Here are the guests:First up is Andreas Klinger- On Deck's CTO and a seed investor on the side. Andreas is based in Berlin. You can find him on Twitter @andreasklingerMinn Kim is a partner at ODX based in San Francisco. ODX is On Deck's community-backed fund and accelerator program. Who's DAO is it anyway? What's so wrong with the internet we know and love/hate today? Will those NFTs be worth something in a decade? You've got questions and we've got answers. In this edition of Thinking Is Cool's Continuing the Conversation series, I speak with TCG investor and general innovation expert Gaby Goldberg in an effort to truly understand what Web3 means for everyone (not just the crypto-pilled on the blue birdie app).Covered in this episode:What is Web3 and how might it permanently change the ways we use the internet? What makes Web3 so much better than Web1 and Web2 (and yes those iterations of the web will also be defined)? What are the biggest risks of putting all of our proverbial eggs in the Web3 basket? And a whole lot more.Listen, learn, and continue the conversation.Resources for listening:This episode is a continuation of my bitcoin episode from Season 1 of Thinking Is Cool. In today’s episode, Claudia and Madison sit down with Gaby Goldberg, an investor at The Chernin Group. A self-proclaimed Gen Zer, Gaby natively understands the creator and gamer economies. Through a self-discovery semester off from Stanford, where she spent time working at a startup in Tel Aviv, Gaby fell in love with venture capital. Through Twitter, she landed her first job in VC at Chapter One. After this experience, she found herself at Bessemer before recently joining The Chernin Group to focus on the evolving space of crypto. Today's episode explores insights and themes including navigating early career milestones, the concept of modern friends, and the future of Web 3. Let’s open the door.
“A top-down view is: someone's going to tell me what's cool, and that's not how it works anymore. It's trickle up, where the curator is the one who builds the audience and curates what's cool. If the audience comes, it comes from the community. And that's why it's really exciting: it doesn't rely on someone who has status or money to make these things reach scale.” — Gaby GoldbergWhen people talk about Web3 and the metaverse, it feels like we're moving into a new era, one governed by new rules of ownership and interconnectivity, where we can all take part in a new economy online. But where does curation fit into that future?Investor Gaby Goldberg has one of the clearest-eyed views of how curation, culture, identity and ownership all fit together in this brave new world. She's written several seminal posts at gaby.mirror.xyz — articles that themselves curate ideas into a fresh understanding of how tastemaking is now “trickle up” and who helped us get here (Kanye). Highlights, inspiration and key learnings:What is the difference between a creator and a curatorThe best curation needs a human touchThe movement towards more niche communitiesHow to find curators you respect and trustOrganizing ideas for written piecesThe psychology behind the need to curateWhat this new market of creators as curators will look likeHow curators can inspire trustUnderstanding the new universe of curation, Web3 and DAOs — where to startWhy choose Mirror as a publishing platformWhy curation will be more important in the metaverseThe difference between Web3 and the metaverseCurating the people around you
