We're diving back into our archives to bring you some of our most memorable and impactful stories and episodes we've ever shared on The Story Collider podcast. This week, we're presenting stories about passion for science that keeps us going, even in the face of overwhelming struggle.  Part 1: When Cailin Gallinger struggles with her gender identity in college, her volunteer position in a plant lab becomes a lifeline. Part 2: In the midst of homelessness and abuse, Rose DF dreams of a life in science.  These stories do include mentions of suicide, rape, sexual abuse, physical abuse and domestic violence. In case you'd find them helpful, now or at any point in the future, we have some resources available on our website. Cailin Gallinger is a Master's student in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Toronto. She studies the geophysical processes of planets in our solar system, from impact craters on the Moon to volcanoes on Mars and beyond, and has performed in several scicomm events in Toronto, including the LGBTQ-themed Science Slam at Glad Day Bookshop and David Hamilton's Solar System Social. She is currently soliciting submissions for a forthcoming zine, Corona, focusing on queer and trans scientists living and working on the margins, and hopes to continue combining her passions for both science and art in her post-grad life. Rose DF is a born explorer with a passion for accessible and inclusive science and education. A first generation scientist born and raised in the Dominican Republic, currently pursuing studies in Biophysics. After opening up about her life for a feature in "Stories in Science" Rose's social media presence has increased since, and she now uses it to raise awareness in the topics of inclusivity and diversity in STEM as she constantly challenges some of the stereotypes associated with being an "non-traditional" academic and a Latina in the US. #77: Trans Health: True to Self

Raw Talk Podcast

Acceptance of transgender and non-binary folks in Canada has come a long way in the last decade and arguably much of this progress was made in just the last few years. While many of us take for granted the ability to express our true selves, it was only in June of 2017 that gender identity and expression was officially recognized and protected from discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act. This and many other policy changes, including those related to healthcare, stem from decades of effort and courage from the trans community. On this episode, you'll hear several perspectives on the past, present, and future of trans health. We spoke to Susan Gapka, a trans-rights advocate and Education and Training Program facilitator at The 519, who discussed her work at The 519, political activism, and lived experience as a trans individual. We also spoke with Sly Sarkisova, a psychotherapist and a registered clinical social worker specializing in trauma and LGBTQ+-related mental health, who walked us through the challenges faced by trans and non-binary folks and how they might interact with the healthcare system. Finally, Dr. Mitchell Brown, an Associate Professor in Department of Surgery at University of Toronto and plastic surgeon at Women’s College Hospital, spoke to us about the Transition-Related Surgery Program, the first public hospital-based surgical program in Canada focused on providing safe and timely access to transition-related surgical care. Happy Pride! In today’s episode, we honor the trailblazers and celebrate the community builders by exploring the role food has played in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Nico Wisler, host of our newest show Queer The Table brings us a story about the Compton’s Cafeteria riot, an uprising that preceded the Stonewall Riots by a few years and marked the beginning of transgender activism in San Francisco. Colette LeGrande, who today stars in drag shows at Aunt Charlie’s Lounge, was a regular patron of Compton’s Cafeteria in the Sixties. She sat with Nico in her dressing room to share memories of the restaurant where the LGBTQ+ community could find warmth, safety, and a cup of coffee after spending the night on the street. Hear more of the story in the first episode of Queer the Table – coming soon to HRN! Our other stories this week take a look at the legacy of LGBTQ+-related riots of the 1960s. Aleah Papes introduces us to Queer Soup Night, a Brooklyn-born queer party with soup at its center and a commitment to resistance. Pauline Munch takes us all the way to Toronto for a very special drag brunch at the Glad Day Bookshop, “the world’s oldest LGBTQ bookstore.” This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council. The Two Gay Geeks had the pleasure to chat with MJ Lyons, author of Murder at the Worlds Fair. Murder at the Worlds Fair is his debut novel and we chat about how he got into writing and also about his "day" job managing the Glad Day Bookshop in Toronto. We also take a few side quests into opera, Golden Girls, and other stuff. This was such a fun interview.   About MJ Lyons MJ LYONS is a writer, game maker and bookstore professional. He manages the bookstore side of Glad Day Bookshop, the world’s oldest surviving LGBTQ bookstore and lives in Toronto, Canada with his goblin of a cat. Murder at the World’s Fair is his debut novel. About Murder at the Worlds Fair   The year is 1893 and airships cloud the skies over the bustling metropolis of Toronto, the Dominion of Canada’s crown jewel. The city is set to host the “New World Exhibition” thanks in no small part to the work of two fantastical inventors. On the day of the grand opening, young Norwood Quigley, scion of a world-famous airship magnate, stumbles onto the scene of a murder; the victim: a Prussian Ambassador; the perpetrator: a Chinese assassin, or so the powers-that-be say. Concerned by the would-be assassin's claim of innocence and his assumed guilt by higher powers, Norwood is thrown into a grand intrigue that hinges on Toronto’s world fair. MURDER AT THE WORLD’S FAIR soars into Canada’s summer reads just in time for the Pride season. Chock-full of LGBTQ characters and diverse themes this inventive debut examines Canada’s historical relationship to colonization and imperialism, all through the lens of a page-turning, steam-powered, clockwork contraption.
