Meet Rowan Jetté Knox, the award-winning Canadian writer and human rights advocate who embodies the power of embracing change and living authentically. Rowan courageously shares his family's journey towards acceptance of both his middle child and wife's transgender identity in his bestselling memoir "Love Lives Here". This journey, marked by vulnerability and unconditional love, has normalized the existence of LGBTQ2S+ families and sparked international change. Rowan's advocacy extends beyond his personal narrative, confronting the stigma of mental illness and championing the rights of transgender youth. His work has earned him recognition such as the Order of Ottawa. Rowan's story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing truth and living authentically. He first started questioning his own gender while in therapy for deep trauma. Despite the challenges, Rowan has learned valuable lessons about self-worth, the importance of community, and the intentional risks necessary for growth. He reminds us that you don't have to transition to be Trans and encourages those questioning their gender to seek out Trans voices. Rowan's journey, including his own transition and non-monogamous relationships, is a powerful example of what it means to live a life true to oneself. EPISODE TAKEAWAYS Rowan's Journey: In 2014 Rowan would have described his family as a Mom, Dad and three sons. Shortly thereafter their middle child came out as a Transgender girl (later, non-binary), and then less than two years after Rowan's spouse came out as a Transgender woman. Consciousness of Truth: “We are more subconsciously aware of our truths than we think we are.” When Rowan's middle child came out he was, at the time, a well-known “mommy blogger” and the post sharing the coming out story of his child went completely viral. There was a little hate but also a massive out pouring of love. Expanding Love: Rowan's family adopted their middle child's best friend at the age of 15 and beautifully extended their circle of love. It was much easier for Rowan to give love and support to his Trans family members than it was to give it to himself. Self-Worth: When the world constantly teaches you that you are NOT worthy of love, it's nearly impossible to find yourself worthy. Rowan and his wife Zoè are in a Polycule relationship that began in 2022 and now they all live together, very happily, in Toronto. Important Reminders: Rowan wants to remind everyone that you do NOT have to transition to be Trans. If you're questioning your gender start following some trans folks on social media listen to what they have to say and learn from the source. Learn more about your ad choices. A candid conversation about gender and work from three women who have been there. My two guests are Leslie Doka and Leena Thomas.Leslie, is the Director of Construction at Wright ConstructionLeena, a Senior Project Manager at Hatch. Leena also holds a Masters in Women's and Gender Studies. In episode 8 with Jake Stika (Next Gen Men), we discussed some of the expectations and limitations that have historically been put on men. In this episode we examine the other side of that issue and discuss how these same systems (patriarchy and capitalism) have limited and impacted women. In our conversation we discuss the following:The archaic views of women's roles shared by Harrison Butker in a commencement speech in May.What we think is important for young people to consider as they navigate balancing work and family. What organizations (specifically male dominant) can do to become more inclusive (hire and retain more diverse talent). How leaders' specific values and traits at the top have a trickle down impact on the entire organization. Please note: We did not specifically exclude other minority groups such as the indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ communities. Our focus was to share themes in our own personal experience.  Filmed June 2024Note: All of the ideas and thoughts shared here are my own and not necessarily shared by any organization I am affiliated with. What is the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame? We talk questions like this and more in the first show of an important month for the disability community which we've marked for a few years now on air. Happy Disability Pride Month everyone! We celebrated Canada last week by replaying an episode with a fellow Canadian: Anne Mok's Purpose In View, but we're back, live, on Outlook this week with the three of us and Oyster the guide dog. And we'll be taking Outlook on the road this month, doing lived experience work, with a group of blind friends to celebrate disability pride together. We're talking PRIDE today - on this week's Mixed Bag show we discuss the upcoming trip to Portland, Maine and Boston and what we're doing at an inn in Maine for a week with other blind creatives, the three tourist experiences we have planned to meet each one of our interests, and we discuss why “pride? In the first place. Also, The National Federation of the Blind is one of a few organized blindness movements having their annual convention at the beginning of Disability Pride Month so we go over some of their 2024 resolutions to see what they're up to and these matters in the resolutions, we choose to discuss a few which we have something to say about, including their motion that Perkins School for the Blind should change their name because Perkins was involved in the illegal opium trade and in enslaved people. Between the two halves of our live show this week, our commercial for Outlook was chosen to air by the computer system at the station and it ends with the sound of a Perkins Brailler. It's always been Perkins to us, we're going on a tour of that historic school for blind children later this month, but we acknowledge the collective trauma caused by the honouring of men like Perkins and his hand in perpetrating lasting damage. We're exploring all the issues which matter to blind people where and how and when we can. So happy Disability Pride from us at Outlook On Radio Western. And why call it pride when Pride Month is June for LGBTQ2S+ just the month before? There are blind people in both minorities so we're honoured to follow, (the very next month) their path toward greater representation and inclusion. Around the world, gender diversity isn't the exception; it's fairly common. It's also not a new invention. Many indigenous societies have long recognized a wide variety of gender expressions, and given leadership roles in spiritual life to gender fluid people. And while colonization has often influenced gender norms, leading to discrimination and violence, many of these traditions are still very much alive. Join Dave as he explores the history, present, and future of life beyond the binary. Episode Guests: Dr. Sharyn Graham Davies is Director of the Herb Feith Indonesia Engagement Centre at Monash University. Her research focuses on gender, sexuality and health in the Asia-Pacific region. Read more about her work among the Bugis community of Sulawesi here. Marca Cassity is an enrolled citizen of the Osage Nation and a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in LGBTQ and Native American trauma. A songwriter, performing under the non-binary version of their name Marx Cassity, their forthcoming album, which can be heard throughout this episode, is steeped in themes of queer and indigenous visibility and resilience. This episode also benefited from the research of historian Gregory D. Smithers. We highly recommend his book: Reclaiming Two-Spirits: Sexuality, Spiritual Renewal & Sovereignty in Native America. This episode mentions some forms of violence and trauma, and discusses the existence of ideas and terms that could bring up painful issues for many gender nonconforming people. Welcome to One Last Network and The Art of Finding the Love We Deserve. Julie Schurr has been a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community for more than 25 years. She has served the queer community in a number of ways, including educator, entertainer and advocate. An expat American living in Spain, Julie seeks to continue uplifting her chosen family through mindset and growth coaching, with a focus on grief. Along with her certification in coaching, she is accredited in cognitive behavioral therapy and rational emotive behavioral therapy. She also holds a master's in linguistics. The queer community is drastically underserved in so many ways. Its members face experiences that those who identify as nonqueer will never understand. Those experiences -- often coupled with profound loss -- can bring stress, grief and lack of focus. Julie wants to help her community overcome those feelings and remind her family members that they have the strength to do so. I reached out to Julie because I have so many friends in the queer community, friends who have endured loss … friends who have endured the loss of pets. And I know from my own perspective how isolating grief and loss can be but I wanted us to better understand the loneliness and isolation that our queer brothers and sisters experience when they say goodbye to their best fur friend. “Two-Spirit Community “Two-spirit” refers to a person who identifies as having both a masculine and a feminine spirit, and is used by some Indigenous people to describe their sexual, gender and/or spiritual identity. As an umbrella term it may encompass same-sex attraction and a wide variety of gender variance, including people who might be described in Western culture as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, gender queer, cross-dressers or who have multiple gender identities. Two-spirit can also include relationships that could be considered poly. The creation of the term “two-spirit” is attributed to Elder Myra Laramee, who proposed its use during the Third Annual Inter-tribal Native American, First Nations, Gay and Lesbian American Conference, held in Winnipeg in 1990. The term is a translation of the Anishinaabemowin term niizh manidoowag, two spirits. Two-spirit people may also use terms from their Indigenous language to describe same-sex attraction or gender variance, such as winkt (Lakota) or nàdleehé (Dinéh). Some Indigenous languages do not have terms to describe sexual identities such as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Many Indigenous languages are verb-focussed, and describe what people do rather than how they identify. For more information, please refer to the Canadian Encyclopedia. In 2018, our team chose to change our name to Re:searching for LGBTQ2S+ health, in order to make two-spirit people a more visible part of our research. We hope to be able to work in partnership with Indigenous communities to use research as a tool to make visible and address the impacts of colonization on Indigenous LGBTQ2S+ people.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Gina Duran started out on a Somatic Journey which evolved into a SOMATIC AWAKENING. She has been on a healing journey for years: yoga, talk therapy, EMDR, art, massage therapy and plant medicine. However, her body was holding a lot of physical pain (related to her life experiences). She had learned to soldier on, to live with it and had various ways to find relief temporarily. She had taken few of my classes years ago and we had connected as yoga colleagues. She felt drawn to somatic bodywork and finally reached out to initiate the conversation. As we embarked on a 10 week series of sessions, her pain began to lessen and eventually vanish. In the process, Gina was able to recover memories and come to terms with trauma that she has been holding unconsciously. In this beautiful interview Gina shares about: -Her work as an Artist, Activist and Poet -The experience of consciously revisiting and integrating traumatic life events -Noticing her body deeply shift and change, her voice and her expression become more authentic -Her use of plant medicine as a way to open up to self-love and integrate somatic bodywork -Collective love and self-love and how communities need both to thrive and evolve and so much more! Working with Gina has been deeply inspiring and exciting for me, she was holding so much and it's deeply satisfying to see her feeling free, happy and at ease in her body. This week, on the podcast, host Eva Hartling speaks with Knoxx, the New York-based creative director for the brand DVMNPIGEON. Knoxx is redefining the rules of streetwear — traditionally a space for straight men — through her identity as a masculine-presenting woman who is part of the LGBTQ2S+ community. In 2011, Knoxx created DVMNPIGEON with the hopes of representing girls like herself, typically left out of the streetwear industry. She caught her big break after being casted in HBO Max's The Hype, a streetwear design competition show, where she quickly made a name for herself thanks to her raw persona and impeccable design talent. She was a stranger to entrepreneurship but knew she had to make a space for women of colour like herself. This season of our podcast is brought to you by TD Canada Women in Enterprise. You never know what you'll find when you walk into Sunshine House. There could be people singing karaoke or making get well cards for a friend. This resource centre in Winnipeg's centennial neighbourhood provides harm reduction supplies, a cup of coffee and community. In the center of this community: Drag. Feather Wolfe and Davey Francis Kole are the heart and soul of Sunshine House – and two of the Queens behind the Like That drop-in program, primarily focused on the LGBTQ2S+ community and invites them to come as they are. Chelazon Leroux sashayed into our hearts on the third season of Canada's Drag Race. The Dene drag queen from Saskatoon is one of the few Indigenous queens to grace Ru Paul's Canadian stage. But it's more than just stilettos, big hair and crowns; Chelazon is fierce, funny and proud to represent being Indigenous. In a world of queens, it can be a challenge for kings to find a place for themselves. Drag artists like Vancouver-based King Fisher, aka Jayme Andrews have had to fight to be part of the scene. But, clad in rhinestone, armour and love, they've won that battle. A drag performer of the Ktunaxa Nation, King Fisher challenges what drag should look like. Did someone say Landback? Colonization almost completely erased the space where two-spirit people exist within our communities. Anita Landback, who is from Millbrook First Nation, uses their drag as a love letter to their Mi'kmaq culture and to reclaim this space for themselves and future generations of two-spirit people. As much as many might wish they looked like Adam Beach, that's not the reality for most. Growing up, Tygr Willy loved watching Mr. Beach on the screen but didn't see themselves reflected. Through drag they're hoping to bring softer representation of Indigenous bodies and cultural intersectionality to a wider audience.
