Stephen LeDrew delivers a sharp analysis on Canada's shifting industrial landscape - from the decline of auto manufacturing to the need for bold resource development. With Stellantis closing its Brampton plant and production moving to the U.S., LeDrew argues that Canada must stop clinging to the past and start seizing new opportunities in energy, mining, and infrastructure. He calls for decisive leadership, fewer bureaucrats, and real investment in projects like Ontario's Ring of Fire and western pipelines. A candid look at change, challenge, and why even Donald Trump might unintentionally help Canada rediscover its economic strength. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Free For All Friday - Hour 1 Mark Twohey, filling in for Amanda Galbraith, breaks down the biggest stories of the day with Canada's top newsmakers. On today's show: Next week, the Carney Liberals will be introducing changes to Canada’s bail reform system. Will these changes withstand a Charter challenge? Mark Mendelson, a former homicide detective, delivers his two cents. Earlier this week, Stellantis announced plans to move production of the Jeep Compass E.V. plant. It was originally planned for Brampton, but it will now be situated in Illinois, creating over 3,000 U.S. jobs and putting over 3,000 Canadian jobs in limbo. With no relief on U.S. tariffs currently in the cards, is this the beginning of the end for Canada’s Auto sector? What would it mean for the national economy if Canada didn’t make cars anymore? We chat with Christopher Worswick, a Professor of Economics at Carleton University. Canadian Tire is bringing back the HBC points blankets. All proceeds will be directed to Indigenous-led initiatives. Do you have one? Would you buy one now? Mark opens the phone lines and takes your calls. Free For All Friday - Hour 2 Contributors from all over the country join The Roundtable to discuss the top stories of the week. Today's edition features Strategy Corp senior vice-president Garry Keller and NorthStar Public Affairs senior advisor Sabrina Grover. Topic 1: Ontario's Premier wants Canada to hit back against the United States if no trade deal can be reached, but Canada's Prime Minister says it's not appropriate if both sides are talking. Should Canada revert back to the 'Elbows Up' approach? If not now, then when? Topic 2: As Doug Ford describes his run-in with a Home Depot shoplifter, the leader of the Ontario NDP wants him to spend less time calling out bandits and more time protecting Ontario jobs. Topic 3: Ontario has officially assumed control of five provincial school boards in 2025. Do we need school boards anymore? Topic 4: Canada Post workers are back on the job. Well, sort of. Is this the first signs of a death rattle from Canada's biggest courier? Topic 5: Do you have a detailed grasp of all your pre-authorized payments? How do you keep track?

Canada's automotive sector continues to trot along the bumpy road, after auto giant Stellantis announced its plans to relocate Jeep production from the Brampton Assembly Plant to a location in Illinois. The Brampton plant has closed its doors in 2024 in preparation for the production of the new EV model, but that's also been paused after US President Trump's tariff announcement on the automotive sector earlier this year. The residuals of Trump's push for domestic vehicle production has since threatened the livelihoods of more than 3,000 at the Brampton plant alone, with the rest of the sector biting its nails for whatever else the President has up his sleeves. And Ottawa has since announced it might bring Stellantis before a judge if it actually goes through with their $13B investment moving down South.Host Mike Eppel speaks to Greg Layson, Digital and Mobile Editor at Automotive News Canada to break down the 'why' behind Stellantis' bombshell announcement, and where it leaves Canada's fragile automotive sector. John Oakley tackles two storylines shaping Canada right now. First, Jocelyn Bamford—VP at Automatic Coating and founder of the Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada—breaks down how U.S. tariffs and Ottawa/Queen's Park responses could hit Canadian manufacturing, from autos to steel, and what policy levers (energy costs, red tape, pipelines) might actually keep high-skill jobs here. Then Tristin Hopper, National Post columnist and author of “Don't Be Canada,” explains the latest polling: Mark Carney's fading honeymoon, a Conservative upswing, seniors consolidating as the Liberal base, a disappearing gender gap, and the NDP's ongoing slump. What we cover: How prospective U.S. tariffs could ripple through Windsor, Oshawa, Guelph, Brampton & beyond Auto sector realities under USMCA vs. headline panic—and whether political theatre helps or hurts Ontario's “hardball” signals (LCBO booze, critical minerals, energy) and investor confidence The cost stack for manufacturers: electricity, compliance, and “death by a thousand cuts” Poll shifts since the election: approval slides, vote-intent realignments, and where swing voters went Guests: Jocelyn Bamford (VP, Automatic Coating; Founder, Coalition of Concerned Manufacturers and Businesses of Canada); Tristin Hopper (Columnist, National Post; Author, “Don't Be Canada”). Guest: Omar Mosleh, Toronto Star reporter The RCMP says it has dismantled one of the largest dark web drug networks in Canadian history, a GTA-based group called RoadRunna that was allegedly shipping about 400 packages of drugs a week across Canada, including through Canada Post. Seven people from Toronto, Brampton and Mississauga are facing charges after officers seized 75 kilograms of cocaine, MDMA, heroin, meth, ketamine and more than 10,000 pills. But the RoadRunna bust is part of a larger story of how the dark web continues to be a hub for traffickers, how criminals are switching to more sophisticated tools from Bitcoin to Monero and even to encrypted apps like Telegram, and how police are finding cracks in what was once seen as an anonymous online safe haven.Experts warn that while these takedowns are significant, dark web markets rarely stay offline for long. We go behind the scenes at the WSET with CEO Michelle Brampton to find out about the changes to culture and approach during her time as CEO.
Jerry opens the show by talking about AI technology amid the backlash over Tilly Norwood. The Eaton Centre food court killer applies for parole. The TDSB cancels public consultations into the controversial lottery for specialty schools. Brampton's Mayor, Patrick Brown, weighs in on the city voting to keep speed cameras for the time being.
In this episode of The Food Professor Podcast presented by Caddle, co-hosts Michael LeBlanc and Dr. Sylvain Charlebois bring their trademark mix of food industry news analysis and an in-depth conversation with a leading Canadian food entrepreneur. The episode opens with a wide-ranging look at the Canadian retail and restaurant landscape. Sylvain shares highlights from his keynote in Brampton, Ontario, where the city is building momentum as a potential logistics hub for food and agriculture. Michael and Sylvain discuss strong retail sales numbers, resilience in consumer spending, and a new Restaurants Canada report. The report highlights shifting meal occasions, with Canadians dining out less often but increasingly turning to delivery services like UberEats and DoorDash. They also unpack the surprising rise of solo dining, with nearly 30% growth in single reservations year over year, and how restaurants can adapt to this trend through design and menu innovation. The hosts then tackle Farm Credit Canada's call for greater export diversification, weighing the challenges of competing in heavily subsidized global markets. Finally, they examine the U.S. government's controversial decision to cut data collection on food insecurity, with Sylvain stressing the long-term risks of limiting access to robust research data. The second half of the episode welcomes Kirk Homenick, President of Naturally Homegrown Foods, the Surrey, B.C.–based company behind Hardbite Chips and PopTastic popcorn. Episode 381: In December 1987, 12-year-old Trina Campbell, a Métis girl from Brampton, Ontario, was abducted and murdered by Douglas Robert Worth, a violent ex-convict known as the “Pictou Sadist.” Despite psychiatric warnings, Worth had been released months earlier. His relatives' testimony helped lead police to her remains, and he was convicted of second-degree murder, receiving a life sentence with 23 years before parole eligibility. Now, in 2025, Worth has been released at age 73 and is living in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, under strict monitoring. Halifax police issued a public safety alert, warning that he remains a high-risk offender with a long record of extreme violence, including rape, kidnapping, and dismemberment. Guest: Andy Takagi, Toronto Star transportation reporter Premier Ford says he's pitching an unprecedented plan to tackle one of the GTA's biggest headaches; gridlock on Highway 401, the busiest road in North America. His vision is a single three-level tunnel running under the highway, which could stretch from Brampton to Scarborough. He outlined the concept at an unrelated press conference this week, but he's been talking about it for nearly a year. Ford says this will serve people for decades to come, but a two-year feasibility study has just begun, and experts are raising questions about the costs, the timelines and whether this would actually ease traffic congestion. We take a look at what Ford is proposing, why experts say it might not work and what it could mean for commuters and communities along the 401.
