In laying the narrative of how former President Trump's camp continued the pressure to overturn the 2020 election results, today's January 6th committee hearing demonstrated his scheme to submit fake slates of electors. However, Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers testified he resisted Trump's pressure campaign to force states to overturn their certified election results. Also, Mark Meadow's ex-aide testified that the White House counsel's office knew the “fake electors” scheme was potentially illegal. And then there's the testimony by Shaye Moss and the recorded video of her mom, which were compelling and heart-wrenching recounts of their horrific experience as election workers in Georgia. With findings like these, it's no surprise that some feel this creates a trend of mistrust in government and this could possibly be why trust went down so much after the 2020 election. Some even say Trump has created a party where if you don't believe in the "Big Lie", you are no longer welcome to be a member of the Republican party. To help dissect today's proceedings further, federal election administration and law experts take listener calls to discuss some of the allegations, false narratives, and how things work. Guests: Mitchell Brown Professor in the Department of Political Science at Auburn University and Associate Editor of the Journal of Political Science Education Stephen Vladeck Charles Alan Wright Chair in Federal Courts at the University of Texas School of Law Town Square with Ernie Manouse is a gathering space for the community to come together and discuss the day's most important and pressing issues. I had Jeff Mitchell on today. I've known Jeff for around 27 years and he's a really interesting guy and a very sweet man who loves art and has a unique background like so many art dealers do. This podcast tells the story of how Jeff became a leader in his field, primarily dealing in art by deceased artists, with a specialty in Maynard Dixon, which is an area that he and I have in common. We hear about the constant evolution in Jeff's life, from joining the marines to being a construction worker a couple of times, going to school for design, becoming a museum director, then a gallery owner, and finally a private dealer. He illustrates just how that happens–how somebody like Jeff has their professional life unfold like that over 45 years. When you get the opportunity to just sit down and talk with somebody in a very intimate situation where you can learn about the things that they went through, it's always unique and exciting. This is no exception and I enjoyed this podcast a great deal. Jeff Mitchell on Art Dealer Diaries episode 198.

What does it mean to be an organization that promotes equity? Listen as Kerry Mitchell Brown, Ph.D. (a diversity, inclusion, and equity strategist), shares her insights about how organizations can ensure they're practicing workplace impartiality — as in walk the walk, not simply check the boxes and call it a day. Mitchell Brown discusses her pivot from a C-suite finance exec — at companies such as Disney and Prudential — to founding KMB, her namesake diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consulting firm, where she is CEO. Like many women, Mitchell Brown faced work-life tradeoffs, as she juggled multiple personal and professional roles, both early on and later in her career. Her motto: “You can do it all, but not at the same time; and you can't do it all by yourself.” Though the pandemic acted as a catalyst for many businesses to evaluate and invest in DEI, Mitchell Brown recognized the need more than a decade ago. “Organizational health is based on how employees are valued, understood, and recognized,” says Mitchell Brown. A workplace's culture that promotes equity will thrive as its staff's potential is maximized. How? Mitchell Brown transforms organizations focusing on sustainable, long-lasting, and impactful collaboration between employees and employers alike. That means listening to all points of view to find common ground. After listening to Mitchell Brown, you will have a better understanding of DEI as a solid pillar in workplace culture. For more stories of bold women who inspire log on to sheventurespodcast.com. Talk about pragmatic! • 20:43: Reshaping workplace ideals: Mitchell Brown shows how the pandemic acted as a catalyst. • 24:44: How Mitchell Brown defines diversity, equity, and inclusion. • 29:31: Ways organizations can tap into the power of present and future leaders. • 36:15: Candid talk: The conscious and unconscious biases Mitchell Brown faces as a woman of color business owner. Spoiler alert: Even the most “woke” among us have unconscious biases to tackle. • 37:05: Small business owner strategies to implement a DEI culture, where cost might be a factor. • 42:12: Mitchell Brown busts the one myth about DEI. What do YOU think it is? Listen!
Its been growing in popularity in corporations for a few decades now but recently DEI has come under fire. Remember those twelve months where every ad was asking you to vote? It was inescapable. Gilda Pedraza and her team worked around the clock to ensure Latino voters in Georgia had the information they needed to cast their ballot. But even with historic voter turnout, a third of eligible adults didn’t vote. Bernard Fraga says that’s a political failure, and not the failure of individual voters. Plus: Kathleen Hale and Mitchell Brown have spent years traveling the country talking to election officials. Why they say this past election has forever transformed the voting process in America. Later in the show: Young people feel ignored by politicians, and politicians feel ignored by young people. So the cycle repeats. A lot of young people don’t vote, and politicians opt out of spending money trying to reach them. Evette Dionne says that new media engages the young voters who politicians ignore.
“Racism unfairly disadvantages individuals and communities and undermines realization of the full potential of the whole society through a waste of human resources.” – Dr. Kerry Mitchell Brown Many assume that racism ended with slavery, but the sad truth is that racism is embedded in the very DNA of our country. So how do we confront and dismantle racism? Our guest this week on A Seat at the Table is Dr. Kerry Mitchell Brown, a racial equity consultant who specializes in organizational transformations. Dr. Brown defined both racism and anti-racism as a starting point for this work. Listen as Gerry and Dr. Brown discuss the different types of racism, how failure to be an anti-racist organization affects the bottom line, and why the idea of colorblindness is harmful. This episode is for any organization looking to take on anti-racism as a practice to strengthen their company. The idea of voting is simple, but the administration of elections in ways that ensure access and integrity is complex. In How We Vote: Innovation in American Elections (Georgetown University Press, 2020), Kathleen Hale and Mitchell Brown explore how election officials work, how ballots are cast and counted, and how jurisdictions try to innovate while also protecting the security of the voting process. Using original data gathered from state and local election officials and policymakers across the United States, Hale and Brown analyze innovations in voter registration, voting options, voter convenience, support for voting in languages other than English, the integrity of the voting process, and voting system technology. The result is a fascinating picture of how we vote now and will vote in the future. Join us to hear them talk about the book and its implications for the 2020 election. Acceptance of transgender and non-binary folks in Canada has come a long way in the last decade and arguably much of this progress was made in just the last few years. While many of us take for granted the ability to express our true selves, it was only in June of 2017 that gender identity and expression was officially recognized and protected from discrimination under the Canadian Human Rights Act. This and many other policy changes, including those related to healthcare, stem from decades of effort and courage from the trans community. On this episode, you'll hear several perspectives on the past, present, and future of trans health. We spoke to Susan Gapka, a trans-rights advocate and Education and Training Program facilitator at The 519, who discussed her work at The 519, political activism, and lived experience as a trans individual. We also spoke with Sly Sarkisova, a psychotherapist and a registered clinical social worker specializing in trauma and LGBTQ+-related mental health, who walked us through the challenges faced by trans and non-binary folks and how they might interact with the healthcare system. Finally, Dr. Mitchell Brown, an Associate Professor in Department of Surgery at University of Toronto and plastic surgeon at Women’s College Hospital, spoke to us about the Transition-Related Surgery Program, the first public hospital-based surgical program in Canada focused on providing safe and timely access to transition-related surgical care. The Blues have beaten the Chiefs for the first time since 2011, a victory which was relatively straightforward in the end and which keeps them in the hunt for an unlikely playoff place. They got home at Eden Park thanks to a disciplined second half and a bit of luck, although they survived a scare when Chiefs loose forward Pita Gus Sowakula was awarded a try with 10 minutes remaining only to have it ruled out due to a knock-on, a decision Chiefs coach Colin Cooper was unhappy about. To make it even better for the Blues was lock Gerard Cowley-Tuioti's late try which turned a fairly comprehensive victory into a bonus point win. It was no more than they deserved because they played with commitment and intensity and flair, too.It is the Blues' second derby victory of the season after their win here against the Highlanders. They have a tougher assignment next weekend against the Crusaders in Christchurch, and their struggles away from home are well documented, but this victory will give them belief at least. It also keeps them in the hunt as they have moved from 14th to ninth. The Chiefs, meanwhile, drop to 13th and are almost certainly out of the scramble for a top-eight position.Virtually the only positive on a night for the Chiefs as their prop Angus Ta'avao celebrated his 100th Super Rugby game was the fact loose forward Sam Cane made a successful return from a broken neck suffered last October.Their biggest problem was creativity; they had too few ideas on attack, especially in the second half, although the Blues should be applauded for keeping them in check, with halfback Jonathan Ruru excellent and first-five Harry Plummer outplaying his opposite Marty McKenzie."We scrambled well and didn't give away too many obvious penalties," Blues coach Leon MacDonald said. "We weren't letting them in and we grew in confidence as we felt we were suffocating them with our defence. We got excited about getting the ball in our hands again and we made the most of it."With midfielder TJ Faiane always alert to an opportunity, the Blues did not lack for attacking options and the pack, led by Patrick Tuipulotu, Alex Hodgman and Ofa Tuungafasi, fired too.Tuungafasi scored an important try in the second half - although it was disputed by the Chiefs, who thought he knocked on - and he and Hodgman played the whole match, a remarkable achievement in the modern age, following Karl Tu'inukuafe's late withdrawal due to illness.Hooker James Parsons was also ruled out late due to a back injury. There was a change for the Chiefs, too, with wing Sean Wainui out after his partner went into labour. And while Chiefs lock Mitchell Brown left the field with a leg injury after only five minutes, it was the visitors who had the better start. The Blues were a bit loose early and retained the infuriating habit of turning attack into defence with one mistake. Mitch Karpik's try, after a mix-up between Rieko Ioane and Melani Nanai, was almost comical. But their perseverance paid off when first-five Plummer went over in the left corner for his first try at this level after a Caleb Clarke turnover and Nanai somehow got the ball down in the other corner to give his side a slim lead at halftime. In the end, outside backs Nanai and Ioane finished on the right side of the ledger with their attacking verve which was nearly irresistible.Cane was a temporary blood replacement for Karpik in the first half and came on for final 26 minutes but not even the All Blacks vice-captain could turn it around for the Chiefs."At 10-8 we were in the fight," Cooper said. "Tries went their way which maybe should have been looked at and weren't looked at. We were awarded a try and unless the TMO got another view, I couldn't understand why Pita Gus's wasn't a try. We didn't get the rub of the green."Blues 23 (Harry Plummer, Melani Nanai, Ofa Tuungafasi, Gerard Cowley-Tuioti tries; Plummer pen)Chiefs 8 (Mitch Karpik try; Marty McKenzie pen)Halftime: 10-8

Sam Cane is in line to make his return to rugby for the Chiefs this weekend after overcoming a neck injury that kept him sidelined since late last year.Cane's status for 2019 was thought to be in doubt after he fractured his neck while playing for the All Blacks in South Africa last October. However, the loose forward has proved his fitness to get some much needed game time under his belt.Cane was named on the bench for the Chiefs, who go into a vital clash against the Blues in Auckland this week. Speaking to the Herald in January, he admitted he had no clear return date, but was hopeful he would be able to "get a sneaky couple of games" at the end of the season."As bad as the injury was, I also, in a funny way, felt pretty lucky because it could have been a lot worse," Cane said. "We're only a couple of millimetres away from never playing again so in a funny way I was pretty grateful that I was going to be OK and, one: I was going to be able to live a healthy, normal life and two: to get back playing rugby is awesome."The 27-year-old won't be the only one returning for the Chiefs this week, with prop Aidan Ross also overcoming a neck injury to join Cane on the bench. And while Cane returns for his 107th Super Rugby outing, fellow loose forward Mitchell Jacobson will make his debut in the competition should his number be called from the reserves. The former New Zealand under-20s representative gets his opportunity as the Chiefs continue to struggle through injury woes. Jacobson's brother, Luke, is unavailable after suffering a head knock at training, loose forwards Taleni Seu (shoulder) and Lachlan Boshier (back) were also ruled out, while Mitchell Brown and Jesse Parete continue to be used as cover locking the scrum.Chiefs: Solomon Alaimalo, Sean Wainui, Tumua Manu, Anton Lienert-Brown, Etene Nanai-Seturo, Marty McKenzie, Brad Weber, Tyler Ardron, Mitchell Karpik, Pita Gus Sowakula, Mitchell Brown, Jesse Parete, Angus Ta'avao, Nathan Harris, Atu Moli.Reserves: Liam Polwart, Aidan Ross, Nepo Laulala, Mitchell Jacobson, Sam Cane, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Shaun Stevenson, Alex Nankivell.

Chiefs coach Colin Cooper has denied claims that his dressing room is split after their horror start to the Super Rugby season. The side has struggled with handling errors and defensive lapses in the early season, finding themselves without a win through the first four rounds. And while their season appears to be on life support, Cooper has denied claims that the losing streak is affecting the dressing room."We work really hard on feedback and we've got good leaders in the group that will keep tapping in with us as coaches and making sure that we're all aligned and in the same waka," he told Radio Sport.Despite his leadership coming into question, Cooper said the team still had the belief they would be playing in the post-season. Flanker Mitchell Brown echoed that and said the players had to take the blame for their poor start."I think he's probably unfairly copping a lot of the blame," Brown said of the criticism Cooper had been receiving."At the end of the day it comes down to the players on the field and how we perform so we've just got to go out there and do our jobs."Looking to upset the high-flying Hurricanes in Hamilton this week, the Chiefs have made several changes to their squad, including moving Damian McKenzie from first five-eighth to fullback.McKenzie's brother, Marty, will don the No 10 jersey in his first appearance of the season, while young gun winger Etene Nanai-Seturo has been demoted to the bench with Ataata Moeakiola joining the starting side. The Chiefs had 13 players unavailable for selection for Friday night's match, including three of their five contracted first five-eighths. As a result, they won't be carrying a back-up first five-eighth on the bench so Damian McKenzie could be in line to slot into the role late in the match. They'll host a strong Hurricanes side who will be looking for an improved performance from the set piece, with experienced props Toby Smith and Ben May given the starting roles in the front row alongside Dane Coles.Chiefs: Damian McKenzie, Sean Wainui, Tumua Manu, Anton Lienert-Brown, Ataata Moeakiola, Marty McKenzie, Brad Weber, Tyler Ardron, Mitchell Karpik, Mitchell Brown, Michael Allardice, Brodie Retallick, Nepo Laulala, Nathan Harris, Aidan Ross.Reserves: Samisoni Taukei'aho, Ryan Coxon, Angus Ta'avao, Taleni Seu, Luke Jacobson, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, Alex Nankivell, Etene Nanai-Seturo.Hurricanes: Chase Tiatia, Jordie Barrett, Matt Proctor, Ngani Laumape, Wes Goosen, Beauden Barrett, TJ Perenara, Ardie savea, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Reed Prinsep, Vaea Fifita, James Blackwell, Ben May, Dance Coles, Toby Smith.Reserves: Asafo Aumua, Fraser Armstrong, Alex Fidow, Liam Mitchell, Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, Finlay Christie, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Salesi Rayasi

Jean-Michel Jarre In Conversation with Slayron and Mitchell Brown Before the 2017 Grammy Awards, electronic music legend Jean-Michel Jarre stopped by dublab’s Analogue Players Club Program. The 30-minute chat that ensued spanned the rebellion of his early punk years, his staging of the world’s largest concert, and his ever deepening connection to Los Angeles, a city that has come to represent the work of his father, the composer Maurice Jarre. His improbable journey from recording in a make-shift home studio to international stardom propelled not only him, but electronic music onto the world's stage. In this interview, we find Jarre continuing to challenge our notions of what electronic music is and what it can be. Join Slayron and Mitchell Brown as they take a revealing and enjoyable look into the life and work of a real trailblazer. In Conversation is produced by dublab. Sound editing and music by Matteah Baim. Due to rights reasons music from the original broadcast has been removed. To hear more, please visit dublab.com.
Presenting Princess Shaw (2015) Samantha Montgomery (Princess Shaw) is a talented singer/songwriter and kind soul whose personality gleams throughout Ido Haar's 2015 documentary (the film we reviewed in lieu of Hester Street because it recently played at the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema). The film chronicles Montgomery's day-to-day existence in New Orleans and Atlanta, as well her long-distance collaborations with Kutiman, the Israeli visual artist and musician, which eventually lead her to international travel and fame. Listen to Shoshanah and I gush over Montgomery, talk about her YouTube channel, and discuss whether Kutiman is an opportunist, a sensitive artist, or the victim of Haar's artistic choices as a director. Next Time and Thank You As promised, we'll move onto Hester Street (1975) (IMDb link), directed by Joan Micklin Silver. This is yet another reputed "Jewish classic," though I hear good things (shout out to Mitchell Brown over at The Discreet Bourgeois). Thank you again to the Klezmer Rebs who continue to graciously let us use their music as our theme song. Their website is located here, and their bandcamp site is here. Listen to them! Aaron

While scientists today closely monitor the world’s active volcanoes, in AD 79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted, there was little warning and panic took precedence over scientific observation. Fortunately, one famous Roman politician and writer, Pliny the Younger, was on the scene and in a series of famous letters made many important observations about the eruption and its impact on the residents of the Bay of Naples. Join UC Classics graduate student Mitchell Brown for an in-depth glimpse at these fascinating contemporary accounts of the destruction of Pompeii.
