PLUS: is Esther Panitch a DINO? How can we trust what we see from Georgia's leaders & will data centers leave us in a wintry darkness?Today, Rons threads together several major developments shaping Georgia and the nation. The hour opens with Fulton County's proposed tax increase to meet federal consent-decree obligations for the county jail—an issue Ron argues reflects a broader philosophical debate over public safety, policing, and the kinds of services communities truly need. He contrasts Fulton's choices with an unexpected policing alliance in New York City, highlighting how unusual partnerships can still drive progress. The show then shifts to a national controversy: the CDC quietly changed language on its vaccine-autism webpage, a move condemned by scientists, pediatricians, and autism advocates. Ron breaks down the political pressure behind the update, the reaction from experts, and the implications of RFK Jr.'s leadership at HHS.Later, the focus turns to Georgia politics—specifically Sandy Springs—where Democrat Esther Panitch's endorsement of Republican Rusty Paul ignites a fierce response from challenger Dontaye Carter. Ron explores the community, political, and identity dynamics at play. Then there's the push to accelerate construction permitting and what impacts that may have on the homes people buy - and find themselves stuck with when that acceleration leads to preventable concerns.Georgia Recorder columnist Jay Bookman dips into the rise of political deepfakes, including a controversial video targeting Senator Jon Ossoff, and what this new frontier means for voters navigating misinformation.Ron has a conversation with CBS News correspondent David Schechter to determine whether data centers could push winter power grids to the brink—an issue with major implications for Georgia's energy future.Lastly, on this Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), it's hard to ignore a few certainties:1. with MAGA, the cruelty is the point - which explains DHHS announcing a Trump administration attack on the rights of trans youth and parents on TDOR. 2. the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Endocrine Society declined to participate in the review and the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which has long set the standard of care for transgender individuals, was not invited to review the report.Still, it's TDOR, and with more than 350 preventable transgender deaths so far just this year including Kennesaw State University trans activist Marisol "Mari" Payero, memorialized by Noel Heatherland from Georgia Equality. Tune in to catch the Ron Show weekdays from 4-6pm Eastern time on Georgia NOW! On the other side of auroras in Southern Illinois, Jonny and Heather dive into some weird stories--like the aurora, things they thought they would never see, at least not down here. In the front half of the show they review the more typical good and bad news for the LGBTQ+ community under the current regime. In the back half of the show they dive into the truly strange, not all of it having to do with more released Epstein information.

During today's Office Hours, we address the critical issue of hate crimes against Black queer men and Black trans women. On October 17, 2024, Daqua Lameek Ritter was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Dime Doe, a Black transgender woman. This landmark case is the first guilty verdict under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act aimed at protecting transgender people.Dime Doe's story highlights the disproportionate violence faced by Black Queer communities. As we recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, let's honor those lost to hate and work towards a future where everyone can live safely and freely.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/teach-the-babies-w-dr-david-j-johns--6173854/support.

Hi all apologies for the delay. I've been unwell for a couple of weeks, and am only just bouncing back now. This week, on what was originally planned for Transgender Day of Remembrance (two weeks ago) we continue my annual Trans history episode. In 2022 I started this series replying to a foolish claim Trans people were a recent phenomenon. My take, there have always been people we'd now recognise as Trans. My list of examples veered from groups, like the Galli, to individuals - like Eleanor Rykener. Society once had places for Trans people - more often than not religious orders - but the church dismantled a lot of this at the Council of Nicaea. Or at least they did so for Trans women. How did the church react to history's Trans men? Today, with a little help from a couple of historical Trans cowboys and a few others, we take a look. Sources Include: The last six or seven minutes of this episode owes a huge debt to Nate Hale's The Conspirators episode ‘The Secret Life of Pope Joan.' Nate does this way better than I do, and in much greater detail. Go check his episode out. Susan Stryker's ‘Transgender History' was invaluable. I used this English Heritage. Org article to fact check the Galli. This American Battlefields article on Albert Cashier This NY Times article on Charley Parkhurst And this National Women's History Museum article on Deborah Sampson, written by Debra Michals. I'll add a handful of other articles later. Much of this episode was put together from leftover notes from the TDOR 2022 episode. As Trans Awareness Week comes to an end, we prepare to observe the solemn Trans Day of Remembrance. At Queering The Air, we are committed to providing comprehensive coverage of stories and reflections pertaining to Trans Awareness Week. Our aim is to keep you informed and engaged, offering insights into the diverse experiences and challenges faced by the transgender community. Moreover, as we approach the Trans Day of Remembrance, this coverage will extend to updating you on the various events and initiatives taking place across Australia, ensuring that we honor and remember those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence. Sasja hosted a discussion with Amao Leota Lu and Madison Moffat to recognise the importance of highlighting these issues and commemorating the lives of individuals who have faced discrimination and violence, as we strive to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for the transgender community. The conversation will explore important topics surrounding gender diversity and advocacy.Amao Leota Lu, born in 1971 in Auckland, New Zealand, emigrated to Sydney with her Samoan diaspora family in the 1980s. She later returned to Australia and embraced her gender identity as a woman and a fa'afafine in her early twenties. Using her performances, she advocates for fa'afafine identity and challenges western LGBT categorizations. Leota Lu's work explores the intersection of gender identity, Pacific culture, and activism. Notably, she curated the first queer Pacific event at Midsumma Festival in 2020 and performed at the Immigration Museum with an event titled Pacific Essence: Tales of a Migrant Plantation. She also participated in Gender Euphoria as part of Melbourne International Arts Festival in 2019. Leota Lu is vocal about the discrimination faced by gender diverse members of Pacific Islander communities and has previously worked as a community support worker.Madison Moffat (She/Her) is a trans woman, Board Secretary for Transgender Victoria, consumer advisor to Monash Gender Clinic, co-facilitator of the TransCreative Network and Managing Editor of the zine on TGDNB culture community, ‘The Trans-creator'. Professionally, she is a risk and operational integrity professional. Chanelle Pickett and Rita Hester were murdered three years apart. Chantelle in 1995 in Watertown, Mass, and Rita Hester in 1998 in Allston. Both were brutal crimes. Neither of them got justice. The attitudes and the language around gay and transgender lifestyles were very different back then. How the media covered violence against transgender people was cruel, if they covered them all. As a result of the mistreatment they got even in death, their deaths were instrumental in the creation of the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th.Chanelle's murderer was prosecuted and used the Trans Panic Defense.Rita Hester's murder is still unsolved. Mallery Jenna Robinson, transgender and HIV advocate and host of A Hateful Homicide podcast, joins me to talk about the violence transgender women face - then and now. We talk about the fight for justice for transgender victims, the urgent need for laws to protect the transgender community from hate crimes and the critical role empathy and compassion play in our society. 5 Things In 15 Minutes The Podcast: Bringing Good Vibes to DEI
Today our Senior Consultant Patti Flynn is joining me as a guest writer. This week was (and still is through today) Trans Awareness Week. This week culminates in the Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR) tomorrow, on November 20th. TDOR was started in 1999 by a transgender advocate as a vigil to the memory of Rita Hester who was killed in anti-transgender violence. The somber nature of the end of the week stands in contrast to the prior 7 days when trans people (and cisgender allies) educate and take action. We bring attention to and lift up the work of trans creators, celebrate the success of trans people in public life, and amplify the voices of trans advocates and activists. We show the world our shared humanity and I hope that leads to more acceptance and less discrimination.Although my TDOR this year will be extra difficult as I say the name of a dear friend, I know that the example she provided to so many when she was with us here in Chicago resonates. Her advocacy and activism inspire my own, and that of many others. So, while we mourn those losses, we look forward to a brighter future. A future that is truly possible with some help from our (cis) friends. There are ways that you can help as an ally. Find a vigil in your area and go to support those there grieving, keeping in mind that this event is by and for the trans community. Seek out information about anti-trans legislation in your state, or a neighboring state, and contact your representative to register your opposition, and encourage others to do the same. Through real, emotional, and hilarious conversations, Layne & Daniel share their personal stories, interview guests and go deep into the often missed, often purposefully ignored stories of the transgender and trans adjacent community. We welcome anyone—Cis, Trans and everyone in between—who is interested in important conversations around our ever evolving and fascinating world of gender identity and ways in which we can contribute to a ReConstructed and more inclusive society. This project was born out of a desire to amplify the visibility of the FTM Trans experience, engage an active community of allies, and to embrace and uplift our beautiful Trans* community. Please share with anyone you know who may benefit from this work. ABOUT DANIEL: Daniel is a Transgender man, former high school and college drop out, healthy survivor of childhood trauma and life-long poet who is today, an educator, college administrator, social justice activist, inspiring public speaker, and now host of The ReConstructed Man Podcast. He started his transition in the early 1990s, well before Transgender identity was well known and support services existed. Yet, his understanding of who he knew himself to be originated very early in his life. Lacking familial and community support or awareness, Daniel found his way through some very dark times and has since dedicated his life to positively model and represent the Trans Masculine experience. ABOUT LAYNE: Layne Ingram is an out-and-proud Transgender man with a passion for raising awareness of and supporting the Trans community, specifically youth and teens. He is a strong advocate for people being exactly who they are and living their lives as authentically as they can. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2002 with his bachelor's in communications after a standout, four-year career on the women's basketball team. He was then drafted to the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs. Over the course of his professional career, Layne has worked in the non-profit, professional sports and higher-education sectors and is also an accomplished public speaker and national presenter. Layne made the decision to transition in 2016 and hasn't looked back since. Connect with him!
