Ale Higuera is a multidisciplinary, visual storyteller working in video, animation, projection and illustration. ana maria higuera is a self-taught digital photographer and video maker. This talented sibling duo was in charge of the videography and archival documentation during the 2022 Rutas Festival.  Fer Sandoval Pezoa is a Latin Queer interdisciplinary artist who bases their work on radical tenderness, community healing and JOY as an act of resistance. They aim to create conversations and encourage self-reflection, as well as collective action. Meet Maria Paula Carreño and María Escolán. Maria Paula is a Queer Colombian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, and she was in charge of Outreach and Marketing for this year's Rutas Festival. María Escolán is a queer theatre artist from El Salvador living on the unceded traditional Coast Salish Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. There are times where… I just want this moment for the Armenians… for them to feel like they are seen and for ... anglophones to just for a moment feel displaced. - Lara Arabian when you are uprooted from your culture… how do we construct this notion of ancestry? I think that doesn't necessarily have to do with blood ties.  Especially as cultural workers, artists - we are always looking for someone in the past that will inspire… who is able to navigate this world where the ground is always moving…. - Carla Melo Meet Lara Arabian and Carla Melo, the writer/performer and director/co- creator of “Siranoush'' a multimedia, multilingual one-woman show that was part of this year's Rutas Festival. Lara Arabian is a trilingual Dora nominated Toronto-based performer by way of Beirut, Lebanon, upstate NY, and Paris, France. She is also a passionate arts educator and is on the faculty of Sheridan College in both the Musical Theatre and the Performing Arts Preparation programs. Carla Melo (Ph.D., UCLA) is a researcher, director and performer invested in creating and thinking critically about the intersections of performance, social engagement and activism. Through a decolonial and hemispheric lens, she has paid particular attention to performances from across the Americas, with a focus on Latin American, Afro-diasporic, immigrant and indigenous populations. Siranoush explores the writer/performer's desire to dig deeper into her cultural roots, through a reimagining of a 19th century ethnic Armenian actress of that name, who was a trailblazer both on and off the stage. Tapping into ancestral knowledge and diasporic memory, the performance takes us across time and space to explore the power of theatre as a way of cultural survival and female empowerment. I won't take no for an answer, in the most you know positive and you know like dedicated way, but I think that, that is very important. I feel like that has given me that hunger and like that desire of figuring it out has led me to where I am today. If I had been discouraged by the rejection of Caminos in 2019 I wouldn't be here. I am very proud and very happy and I always say if Santiago did it, you can do it too. - Santiago Guzmán Meet Santiago Guzmán, a writer, performer, director and producer for theatre and film originally from Metepec, Mexico, now based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He is the  Artistic Director of TODOS Productions and his work is very brown, very queer, and very real.  Santiago is the creator and performer of “Altar” that was part of this year's Rutas Festival. Altar tells the story of Eugenio a queer young immigrant living in St. John's, Newfoundland & Labrador. Less than a year has passed since his move from Mexico, but in that time, he experienced deep love and deeper heartbreak when his new boyfriend, Benjamin, inexplicably “ghosted” him. No, Benjamin isn't dead; he just stopped calling and texting. And the thing is…Eugenio's still not over it. Looking to the traditional Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (The Day of The Dead) and his father's previous experience with paranormal activities, Eugenio decides to build an altar (a central part of the Día de Muertos ritual) in the hopes that he will be able to summon his boyfriend's ‘ghost' to sort out the end of their relationship once and for all. Through the altar, Eugenio realizes that he has been something of a ghost himself to the loved ones he left behind in Mexico. Will setting up an altar be enough for Eugenio to forgive, forget, and love again? Or enough to help him heal the relationships with his friends and family far away? Sin esperanza pero con mucho amor y mucha poesía. Osea, nos gustan mucho las derivas poéticas, nos gusta mucho resignificar las historias de las personas y nos gustan mucho las historias incómodas. Entonces, lo que venimos a hacer es incomodar de una manera poética la mirada de la gente.- Zuadd Atala Conoce a Zuadd Atala quien forma parte de Teatro Línea de Sombra. Desde 1996 Zuadd ha trabajado con diversos coreógrafos y directores de escena internacionales y nacionales. Su entrenamiento y búsqueda se fundamentan en las prácticas corporales, la instalación habitada y la escena documental. Zuadd es la Coreógrafa y performer de Danzantes del Alba, y también fue parte del concepto y la creación de Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción. Ambas producciones formaron parte del Festival Rutas 2022.  Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción es la historia de un lugar, de sus habitantes, al mismo tiempo que una reflexión de lo que significa vivir bajo una violencia crónica. Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción es un trabajo de investigación realizado alrededor de la llamada “Ciudad de la Mujeres”, en Turbaco, Colombia, en donde hace quince años, un grupo de mujeres desplazadas por el conflicto armado, fundó la “Liga de las mujeres desplazadas” y construyó 98 viviendas, con sus propias manos. Después de una corta estancia en aquel sitio, TLS se planteó una serie de interrogantes alrededor de esa comunidad. El caso que ahora se muestra puede ser entendido como una fábula documental donde se establecen algunas reflexiones éticas sobre los destinos posibles de aquel asentamiento suburbano, de las mujeres que lo construyeron y especialmente, de los niños que también lo habitan. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea escénica, dos mujeres utilizan un bloque de hormigón, la imagen de un hipopótamo y un paquete de cartas sin destinatario para hablar del desplaza­miento forzado, la violencia y el miedo al futuro. Danzantes del Alba es un carnaval fantasma de danza e historia, que celebra la resiliencia de trabajadores que han viajado a través de las rutas migratorias desde Centroamérica hasta México.  Un narrador nos invita a tomar nuestro lugar en el escenario, alrededor de tres círculos concéntricos y nos presenta los 36 trajes de carnaval del Loco de la Danza quienes con la ayuda de danzantes, y un documental que se proyecta en escena, nos cuenta las historias de los artesanos que construyeron estos trajes en maquiladoras opuestas a las maquilas industriales como: talleres artesanales o pequeñas industrias en cooperativa, un taller de viejos obreros comunistas con máquinas de coser en la sala de su casa, una migrante centroamericana que cose mientras se prepara para viajar al norte, una cooperativa de mujeres que rescataron un lugar abandonado y lo reconvirtieron en una pequeña industria textíl y en un espacio social y, un colectivo de activistas gay en la frontera con Guatemala. Estos espacios de trabajo operan bajo lógicas contrarias a la explotación indiferenciada de las empresas trasnacionales. Danzantes del Alba es una instalación documental y teatral de danza inspirada por un carnaval que se inició en uno de los pueblos en México a lo largo de las rutas de migración de Centroamérica. Usando máscaras y disfraces del Loco de la Danza, los migrantes participaban de la celebración sin ser denunciados a las autoridades.  Danzantes es por ende “un carnaval fantasma” ya que lo que queda, son los trazos de aquel carnaval, y las historias del cómo se crearon estos trajes. En Toronto, el equipo de Línea de Sombra, estará trabajando con seis intérpretes inmigrantes de las Américas, manteniendo así viva la experiencia migratoria. Nuestra coanfitrióna de este episodio es una actriz, creadora y colaboradora nominada al Dora que reside en Toronto, pero proviene de la Ciudad de las Montañas: Monterrey, México, Sofia Rodriguez.  Sofía tuvo la oportunidad de ser la Narradora de Danzantes del Alba para la presentación del Festival Rutas. So, what we're here to do is make people uncomfortable in a poetic way.  - Zuadd Atala    Meet Zuadd Atala from Teatro Línea de Sombra. Since 1996 Zuadd has worked with various international and national choreographers and stage directors. Her training and research are based on bodily practices, the inhabited installation, and the documentary scene. Zuadd is the Choreographer and one of the performers of Danzantes del Alba, and she was also part of the concept and creation of Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción. Both productions were part of the Rutas 2022 Festival. Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción is the story of a place and its people, as well as a reflection on what it means to live through long-lasting violence. Each performance begins with an empty stage, like the empty terrain the women faced when they began to build the City of Women. Over the course of the performance, Zuadd and Alicia fill the stage with various objects– building a miniature city as the audience watches. A complex installation is then formed from cinder blocks with colored roofs, photos of the women of the City, explanation cards on wooden mounts, and many other objects.  At the conclusion, the audience is  invited onto the stage to get to know this City of Women in depth. Danzantes del Alba is a phantom carnival which ritualizes the making of 36 festive costumes of the character, El loco de la danza.  Several artisanal workshops created these 36 costumes, including a group of old communist workers, the home of a Central American migrant woman who was earning money by crossing the border, a women's cooperative who rescued an abandoned place and turned it into a small textile factory, and a collective of gay activists on the border with Guatemala. Danzantes is a performative essay on the intersection of documentary research and the construction of landscapes on stage.  At the end of this extraordinary dance / story, the audience is invited to explore the final installation and become part of the living landscape. Since I started in the world of puppetry, my artistic career and my life changed completely. And I felt as if I finally found the art form that is generous enough and that englobes all the other art forms, because puppetry is the meeting of the art of the scene, art of the stage, and the visual arts and music. So for me it is like the most complete and generous art form that ever existed. - Nina Vogel  Meet award-winning Brazilian multidisciplinary artist, puppeteer, singer, actress, and director Nina Vogel. Her approach to puppetry and art has a strong spiritual influence inherited from both her indigenous Guarani and Tikuna ancestry. Her work has been performed all over the world and she is the creator and performer of  Peter and the Wolf part of 2022 RUTAS Festival. Peter and the Wolf, the classic story and music by Sergei Prokofiev, bursts to life with glorious puppets crafted in ateliers in Brazil. Created by master craftsmen and artist Nina Vogel, from the very musical instruments featured in the symphony, the visually stunning costume from which the puppets appear and disappear delights children with an unforgettable performance as they experience the fable for the first time. Supported by Toronto's Euphonia Chamber Ensemble with Musical Direction by award-winning Conductor, Composer and Pianist Maziar Heidari, Nina Vogel presents this ingenious and beautiful spectacle with an accompanying short film, ANIMA, which takes the audience on the fantastical journey that Nina Vogel followed to create this contemporary interpretation of Peter & the Wolf. I think I feel a responsibility to complicate the conversation and again bring ... what's actually happening on the ground. You know, if you don't work in the oil and gas industry it's easy to look at it and be like ‘yeah… what are we doing over there, that's terrible, we should stop that.' But if you are someone who is working in it, it's not that simple. We're not gonna get anywhere if those two components of the world aren't talking to each other.                  - Claren Grosz In this episode, we chat with Claren Grosz. She is a queer Toronto based theatre and visual artist. Her theatre practice focuses on physical, visually compelling work and holistic, non-hierarchical theatre making processes. Also, she is the artistic director of Pencil Kit Productions. Claren is the creator and performer of “I Love The Smell of Gasoline”, opening  at 2022 RUTAS Festival. In “I Love The Smell of Gasoline”, Claren attempts to reconcile her Alberta oil-industry roots with the current environmental emergency. The project was born of a frustration with divisive Canadian politics, rampant hypocrisy, and a lack of team spirit when facing impending doom. She is also one of the protagonists of Cacao | A Venezuelan Lament, a new live performance work having its opening at the Rutas Festival. Cacao | A Venezuelan Lament is a new live performance works about belonging, land and the preservation of traditions. Drawing on twelve years of community-based fieldwork, this polylingual and multidisciplinary dance and theatre production offers timely insight into the complex lived realities of Venezuela's cacao farmers. Creator, Director and Choreographer Victoria Mata roots her vocabulary and aesthetics in the tensions between remembering and forgetting, and in a dynamic dialogue between Afro-Venezuelan genres and contemporary expressions of dance and music.  I really want truths on stage, these are the truths. These women as you see the piece you are gonna hear the voices of these women.  And the Actors at the top acknowledge they are the ones saying the stories of these particular women; they are not pretending that they are these women. The actor becomes a vehicle that is being used for these voices to be heard - Beatriz Pizano (It was) a very emotional journey to cut down their stories and just scale them down to the genesis of their particular story that we wanted to highlight… it was a challenging, and joyful, and emotional playwriting experience extremely different from fiction. -  Anna Chatterton   We have to be united as humans, humanity, to be able to bring the change. Because we can't do it separately. If this hand with 5 fingers can do something, otherwise is not going to happen we can't do anything and I think this is the most important conversation for me, that we realize first of all we are not alone, and second that our unity can bring changes otherwise we can't do anything. - Shahrzad Arshadi In this episode, we chat with the writers and creators of Children of Fire, Anna Chatterton and Shahrzad Arshadi as they prepare for their upcoming presentation at the Rutas Festival. Children of Fire is an intimate portrayal of the Kurdish female freedom fighters that hosted Shahrzad Arshadi and Anna Chatterton in the mountains of Kurdistan in 2018. Co-created with a mix of verbatim theater and first-person confessional, this play follows the journey and layered relationship across cultures between Shahrzad and Anna, and asks what is at the heart of living bravely as a woman and an activist. Children of Fire es un retrato íntimo de las mujeres Kurdo llamadas freedom fighters que recibieron a Shahrzad Arshadi y Anna Chatterton en las montañas de Kurdistán en el 2018. I personally think that cross-cultural solidarity between communities of colour is absolutely essential to build the kinds of worlds that we want, in any of the areas that we're struggling at the moment.  - Suvendrini Lena In this episode we chat with our dear friend, mother, human, playwright, and neurologist Suvendrini Lena!  Suvendrini works as a neurologist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and the Women's College Hospital. She has been an artist-in-residence at several artistic and medical organizations, including the Theatre Centre and the University of Toronto. Especially in North America, there's division and boundaries. When we speak the truth there is incredible creative energy in that, that sometimes we don't even realize as artists until we actually have the courage to stand in that truth and breathe it and say ‘this is what I got, this is me'. "Translation is an exercise in not having the right answer.”  -Paula Zelaya Cervantes   In this Conversatorio, we explore translation and adaptation of language in a 2021 context. We invited Paula Zelaya Cervantes, a Mexican translator, adapter, and writer, to reflect on 2 case studies of contemporary multi-lingual theatre from the Aluna archives - Aluna's 2016 Interpretation Lab, and our recent Studio Series presentation of Clean / Limpia.    In order of voices you will hear, the speakers are:   Maria Constanza Guzman -  translator, translation scholar and Associate Professor in the School of Translation and the Department of Hispanic Studies at Glendon College, York University. Paula Zelaya Cervantes - Mexican playwright, director and translator. Translation and adaptation for Clean / Limpia.  Annike Andre-Barrett - Multilingual Communication Facilitator, and dedicated language professional with over 12 years in medical, legal, and community interpreting.   Elena Basile - poet, artist, translation scholar and professor at the University of Toronto's Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies.  Christine Quintana - actor, playwright, and co-Artistic Producer of Delinquent Theatre. Born in Los Angeles to a Mexican-American father and a Dutch-British-Canadian mother, Christine is a proud co-founding member of the Canadian Latinx Theatre Artist Coalition. Playwright of Clean / Limpia.  Chelsea Haberlin - Artistic Director of Neworld Theatre and an Artistic Associate with ITSAZOO Productions. “How does one return to a country that doesn't want you anymore?”   Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada.    We’re proud to present El Retorno/I Return, a play written and adapted for audio by Mariló Núñez.    In 1979, a Chilean family, in political exile in Canada, traveled to Eastern Europe with their young children to prepare for The Return Plan, an international effort to topple the Pinochet dictatorship. “You have to allow yourself to be a bad writer to become a better writer. That’s the biggest lesson I’ve learned.” - Mariló Núñez   This week’s guest is Chilean Canadian playwright and director, and Aluna’s playwright in residence, Mariló Núñez! Mariló is based in Hamilton, Ontario, and is the 2018 recipient of the Hamilton Arts Award for Established Theatre Artist. She was the founding Artistic Director of Alameda Theatre Company, a company dedicated to developing the new work of Latinx Canadian playwrights, and is currently obtaining her Ph D. in Theatre & Performance Studies from York University. She is also the writer of our next Studio Series presentation, El Retorno/I Return, a play that explores family, exile and revolution, and journeys into the heart of Latin American history.    In this interview we talk about Latinx identity in North America, the creation method of María Irene Fornés, writing race as a playwright, and her insights on developing a writing practice  Aluna Theatre’s Artistic Director Beatriz Pizano will direct Mariló’s upcoming Studio Series presentation, and recently directed another radio play available to stream right now - listen to Soulpepper Theatre Company’s Around the World in 80 Plays presentation of The Walls by Argentinian playwright Griselda Gambaro here!   SHOW NOTES: The Refugee Hotel, a play written by Carmen Aguirre and first produced by Alameda Theatre Company in association with Theatre Passe Muraille. In 2008, Stephen Colella and Erica Kopyto helped Mariló found the De Colores Festival of New Works, Canada’s first playwrights unit and festival dedicated to developing the work of Canadian Latin American writers. INTAR, or International Arts Relations Inc in New York City, is one of the United States’ longest running Latino theaters producing in English. Their Hispanic Playwrights in Residence Lab was founded by esteemed dramatist and teacher María Irene Fornés. Nilo Cruz, Migdalia Cruz, Cherrie Moraga, Caridad Svich, and Luis Alfaro were inspirations for Mariló as she ran Alameda Theatre Company. Mariló participated in the Fornés Playwriting Workshop in Chicago led by award-winning playwright and Fornés protégée Migdalia Cruz. She earned her Masters in Playwriting at Guelph University, and is currently earning her PhD at York University with a focus on race and theatre. Blood In Blood Out and American Me are films with Latino stereotypes that Mariló watched growing up. ‘You are not my fucking friend.’ Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. This presentation is also available in Spanish.  We’re proud to present Clean, a work in process written by Christine Quintana, translation and adaptation by Paula Zelaya Cervantes, in collaboration with Neworld Theatre. This episode is an experiment: it has been adapted for an English audience. When produced, Clean will be performed onstage in both English and Spanish. Memories, fantasies, and reality mix on a rainy night at a Cancun resort. Adriana, a hotel floor manager, is reeling from the news of her father’s death. Sarah, a visiting wedding guest, is haunted by events from the past. When a chance incident connects them, the echoes of their pasts and imagined futures collide with the present, in the false paradise of the resort. “We’re all treaty people. I do believe that, because all of our ancestors signed this agreement together. So it’s our responsibility, it’s not a one sided-agreement, to learn about the treaties and to be able to speak about them.”  - Falen Johnson   In this Conversatorio, we present a discussion on performance, interpretation, and making treaty from the 2014 RUTAS International Multi-Arts Festival. Originally part of a festival conference event called Restaging Treaty: Embodied Memories, Written Records, and Living Archives, the event started with a reading of a new play commission by Falen Johnson on the subject of Treaty 9, and was followed by this panel discussion.   In order of voices you will hear, the panelists are:   Sasha Kovacs - artist, performance scholar, core/founding member of Ars Mechanica, and Ph.D. candidate at University of Toronto. Reverend Grafton Anton - Wolf Clan from the Onaida of the Thames First Nation, former Elder in Residence at the University of Toronto’s First Nation House, Onaida language teacher, and retired reverend at United Church of Toronto’s Urban Native Ministry.   Falen Johnson - Mohawk and Tuscarora from Six Nations Grand River Territory, awriter, dramaturg, actor, co-host of CBC Podcasts’ The Secret Life of Canada with Leah Simone Bowen, and guest-host of CBC Radio’s UNRESERVED.  John Long - the author of Treaty No. 9: Making the Agreement to Share the Land in Far Northern Ontario in 1905, and at the time of this discussion, professor at the Schulich School of Education in North Bay. This episode is dedicated to his memory.  Murray Klippenstein - over 25 years of a broad social justice practice in the fields of Native rights, environmental law, housing and employment law, and civil rights with Klippensteins law firm. Murray has represented the Mushkegowuk First Nation in James Bay for over 15 years.   SHOW NOTES:  Diana Taylor’s work on living archive and her book The Archive and the Repertoire. Today it is better known as Fort Albany First Nation.  John Long’s book, Treaty No. 9: Making the Agreement to Share the Land in Far Northern Ontario in 1905 The diary of treaty commissioner Daniel G. MacMartin has been an important piece of current disputes about Treaty 9   The Ring of Fire development area in the James Bay lowlands of northern Ontario.   Mushkegowuk Cree First Nation  Since 1997, the Canadian Supreme Court has allowed oral testimony to be used as evidence in court.  Further resources: Trick or Treaty? a 2014 film on Treaty 9, and a Canadian Heritage minute featuring Rosary Spence.   “Todos somos gente de tratados. “This blood embodied work is to say that there is so much creativity within you that if you slowed down, went back to the earth, did land creation methodologies, work will come to you. For me, I want to conjure from that place.” - Kim Senklip Harvey   This week’s guest is Kim Senklip Harvey, a proud Nation member of the Syilx, and Tsilhqot'in Nations with Ancestral ties to the Dakelh, Secwepemc and Ktunaxa communities. She is a Fire Creator, Indigenous Theorist and Cultural Evolutionist who uses a variety of modalities including playwriting, tv writing, blog and podcasting to work towards the equitable treatment of her peoples. "Would you still love me if I had a really dark thing inside of me?"   Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. First you’ll hear a work in process, then a short talk by the artist on their creative process.    DiablaDivina is about a young girl (Niña) and her tumultuous relationship with the Virgin Mary (Maria). Maria guides Niña through her memories to shed light on Niña's shame filled past. Niña learns that there is more to Maria than the woman who lives in the painting in her bedroom. Content Warning: Mature Content, Physical and Sexual Abuse.   J & A Collective is founded by multidisciplinary artists Jeysa Caridad and Adriana Moraes-Mendoza. They create and share original, culturally inspired stories engaged by female narratives. As a collective, they were residents of Factory Theatre’s Foundry where they completed the first draft of their co-written play, DiablaDivina. This piece continued on to Assembly Theatre’s 150 Workshop series, excerpted and showcased in Aluna’s 2019 Caminos festival, and is now being adapted into an audio experience with Aluna Theatre. The Collective is currently in Paprika Festival’s Producer unit working on their latest project, Not Your Mija - a film inspired by the experiences of three very different Latinx women. “The majority of the world is not aligned towards us. And yet we’re creating a world that we thrive in.” - Umang Antariksh Sagar   This week we’re interviewing Umang Antariksh Sagar and Kumari Giles, host/creator and producer host of Possibilities Podcast!   Possibilities Podcast engages in deep dive conversations with queer and trans, Black, Indigenous, people of colour artists and possibility makers. They seek to be a portal for inspiration and insight, and invite listeners to generate their own infinite possibilities. Umang Antariksh Sagar, the creator and host, and Kumari Giles, the show’s producer are also  multidisciplinary artists - Umang is a filmmaker, writer, visual artist, and Kumari is a dancer, curator, aerialist, and community cook.  In this interview we talked about their podcast meetcute story, how their definition of a ‘possibility’ guides their work, and their insights on what makes a strong collective movement. "Life is way too short to be learning everything by yourself" - Ghenoa Gela  Our guest this week is Ghenoa Gela, a strong Torres Strait Islander woman from Rockhampton, Central Queensland! She's a Sydney-based independent performing artist working across dance, circus, television and stage. Ghenoa is a recipient of the Keir Choreographic Award and winner of the Deadly Funny Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award 2017. “Pleasure is a gift I gave you and it’s a gift you don’t only need to give to others, but you can give it to yourself too, you know?”   Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. First you’ll hear a work in process, then a short talk by the artist on their creative process. This presentation is also available in Spanish.    A journey from one home to another. The Cunning Linguist tells the story of Monica, a young Mexican girl that realizes that God made her queer. What Monica sees as an honour, people close to her see as wrong. Thanks to a TV show Monica decides to move to Toronto, with God (Diosito) as her unlikely sidekick, where she begins to learn more about herself, freedom and sex.    Monica Garrido is a Toronto based Mexican Artist, Filmmaker, Writer, Producer, Comedian, Performer and Storyteller that uses comedy as a tool and a shield to express herself. Her short films "Diferente" and the horror-comedy "Love You to Death" have been part of the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival.  She’s part of the ensemble of the Canadian Comedy Award winner show Sketch Comedy Extravaganza Eleganza. Monica is the 2018 recipient of the Queer Emerging Artist Award at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. She is one third of a Latinx Drag King Boyband and currently Co-host and Co- Produces “Merendiando” part of Radio Aluna Theatre. She is also a Taurus and wishes you the best.     Beatriz Pizano (Director) is an accomplished director and playwright. She is also an actor with more than twenty years of experience on stage, film and television. She is the 2009 winner of the prestigious John Hirsch Prize for Direction from the Canada Council for the Arts and the recipient of numerous awards and internships including The Ken McDougall Award for Direction, The Chalmers Fellowship, The Urjo Kareda Award (Tarragon Theatre), and The Metcalf Performing Arts Internship. She has been an Associate Artistic Director for Theatre Revolve and Nightwood Theatre. As a writer/director Beatriz has been nominated three times for Best New Play for her multi-award winning trilogy about women and war comprised of For Sale, Madre, and La Comunión. She has also created and led a number of youth programs both in Canada and Colombia. Most recently, she facilitated a theatre/photography workshop with ex-combatant children and youth victims from the armed conflict in her native Colombia.   The Cunning Linguist was Created with support from the Emerging Creators Unit at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, and winner of the 2016 Queer Acts Audience Award. “I’m an ancient recipe that has lost its origin.”   Welcome to the Studio Series: experiments in audio storytelling from some of the most exciting theatre artists from our TransAmerican community in Canada. This presentation is also available in Spanish.    Sharing a meal is an intimate and immediate gesture of love. Reina is a performance ritual that strives to create this same atmosphere. It invokes and celebrates personal femininity and Indigeneity through a collection of memories, stories, recipes, and physical scores in conversation with live afro-venezuelan percussion and vocals by musician Y Josephine. And arepas.   Augusto Bitter is a Dora Award-winning performer, writer, facilitator, and artistic producer based in Toronto. He is a Resident Artist at Aluna Theatre and has been in-residence at Canadian Stage, Theatre Passe Muraille, and hub14. He has trained with Teatro delle Radici (Switzerland), Manifesto Poetico (Paris), Canada's National Voice Intensive, Aluna Theatre's Interpretation Lab, and the University of Toronto. Augusto is also a youth educator with Soulpepper and Story Planet. He is developing a new piece—Reina—with musician Y Josephine, and his short film cannibal will be a part of Toronto Queer Film Festival 2021. www.augustobitter.com   Y Josephine is a Venezuelan-Canadian, and a citizen of the world, whose contagious passion for percussion has propelled her to travel far and wide sharing her epic fusion sounds of the South. Driven by the potent, soothing, and vibrant music she’s helped to create, she is one of the founders of Baobá, a trio formed by Toronto’s top female percussionists taking traditional beats to the next level. Empowered by the natural musicality that flows from South American bodies, that trio-and-sometimes-quartet, featuring fellow Jamphitheatre-er Anita Graciano alongside Mari Palhares and Carla Dias, represents an ideal balance of voice, melody, and instrumentation bringing new life to, and transcending, Venezuelan, Colombian, and Brazilian traditions. She also is part of the Amao Kuda Et les Bois crue, described by Now Magazine as a "tantalizing afro soul combo of folk, roots, desert blues and African continental music".
