Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Guitarist and composer Molly Miller joins me on the show today. I first saw Molly playing a show at Nelson Drum Shop here in Nashville with her trio - Jay Bellerose on drums and Jen Condos on bass. It was a spectacular show. Molly has a really unique style that's rhythmic and aggressive but also extremely melodic. Kinda jazz. Kinda not. The trio is a regular thing for her, and they create music that owes as much to Booker T and the MG's as it does to a more traditional jazz approach. Molly also has taken a unique path to her career in music - it's a combo of playing live, recoding her own albums, touring and recording as guitarist for Jason Mraz, and then teaching at University. In fact, she has a doctorate degree in music and she was the Chair of the Guitar Department at LA College of Music, and is currently a professor of Studio Guitar at USC in LA. So between all those things, she's got a really interesting career on the go. To hear her at her finest, check out one of the Molly Miller trio albums, which feature amazingly creative guitar playing but also spectacular arrangements and ensemble playing. The latest album is called “St. George”, and there's also a new one in the works. We had a great conversation about all of those things, as well as her instruments and gear, and how she approaches solo guitar playing. Enjoy! You can keep up with all of Molly's projects and tour dates atmollymillermusic.comBe sure to listen to the Accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. On this episode of Rock in a Hard Place we welcome a very special guest (from our band), Nate Parrish! The other half of the “Guitar Department” joins us from his home in sunny California to talk about his life, his solo music, his experiences with Church, and losing his father to Cancer. Nate talks about learning guitar at 18 years old, learning how to pronounce “Epiphone,” and joining his first band after 6 months. Moving to Modesto to join a worship band but trying to make it hardcore with screaming. Nate uses his art skills to help make a drum skirt for a huge Kutless drum riser. We make a ‘The Office' style video* about Nate stalking James since 2008. Nate “officially” joins Kutless in 2015, and we begin having adventures. Segway tours in Budapest vs. crying in a bathtub. Sketchy doctors in Ukraine. Meat platters. The difference between happiness and what joy is. Understanding how Churches can try to control people through a morphed “Prosperity Gospel.” Sometimes God blesses us with exactly the opposite of what we wanted. Shoot us an email at podcast@kutless.com *Here is the funny video (Nate stalking Kutless) talked about on this podcast, watch on YouTube - “Replacing Kutless' James Mead Creation Festival: The Tour” https://youtu.be/Dgupvfw-y7E

He tells some incredible stories, reflects on what has changed at Berklee as well as what has stayed the same, and shares some invaluable wisdom. This was and was our first interview recorded on Zoom, so the sound quality isn't quite as slick as the other episodes, but it's a great conversation, so check it out!

Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

My guest today is the great guitarist/instructor Chris Buono. I met Chris in 2003 through our mutual friend David Fiuczynski while doing a thing at Berklee College of Music. Chris and I have played music together a lot - a good bit of that music has been with the great drummer Tobias Ralph. I've also played bass on many of Chris’s TrueFire courses including an in-depth interactive course along with Keith Carlock called In The Jam: NYC Funk.In addition to being a kick ass guitar player who’s played with people like Dweezil Zappa, Bumblefoot, Graham Haynes, Karsh Kale, Snarky Puppy, etc., Chris is one helluva guitar instructor. Former students include Bob Lanzetti, Rob Compa, Ben Levin, Aurelien Budynek and Harvey Valdes to name a few. He has over 40 courses through TrueFire, he’s been a contributing writer for Guitar One, Just Jazz Guitar and currently Guitar Player magazine and makes instructional content for Guitarinstructor.com. Chris was also a member of the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music for a time and has several books published by Alfred & Hal Leonard. We had a great chat back in June where our conversation begins talking about the new challenges in hustling brought on by this pandemic. Be sure to stick around at the end for our thoughts on our mutual hero, Eddie Van Halen.

A perpetual student of the art, Tariqh has been a composer, songwriter, studio musician, educator, musical director, multi-instrumentalist and clinician.A native of Santa Barbara, Tariqh studied contemporary classical composition at the University of California at San Diego before deciding to pursue performance at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
