For decades, Nels Cline carved out a career on the fringes of rock, jazz, and experimental music, balancing day jobs with an uncompromising artistic vision. Then, at nearly 50 years old, everything changed—he joined Wilco, bringing his avant-garde sensibilities into a beloved band and reaching a global audience. But Cline's story isn't one of sudden success; it's about persistence, reinvention, and creative restlessness. In this episode, he reflects on his journey—from growing up in Los Angeles with his twin brother, drummer Alex Cline, to navigating the punk and avant-garde jazz scenes, to his latest album, Consentrik Quartet (Blue Note Records), which explores the tension between stillness and chaos, structure and improvisation. Cline speaks candidly about collaboration, musical identity, and the ever-evolving nature of his work, proving that there's no single timeline for artistic success—only the drive to keep going. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Steve and Bill Hart, who was a long-time, some 30-year guitar department head, met in California while Bill attended GIT and they have been close friends for decades… I think it is very interesting how institutions get off the ground, it's not easy… like an airplane taking off, you need full power and concentration to keep things rolling in a straight line to get off the ground and then diligence to get where you are going… hats off Steve! We hope you like innovative jazz-based electric guitarists, because our first episode of 2025 focuses on two of 'em. Jeff Parker is here to talk about his recent jazz album for Nonesuch, The Way Out Of Easy, credited to Jeff Parker And The ETA IVtet. Parker talks about working with his L.A. based quartet, which features bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose, and saxophone player, Josh Johnson, but we also look back at his highly musical time in the windy city of Chicago, where he first made a name for himself with groups such as Tortoise. This episode gives us an excuse to reprise our interview with prodigious jazz guitarist Julian Lage discussing his RSD Exclusive release, Live In Los Angeles, that first ran as part of our RSD Black Friday 2024 coverage. Henry Johnson quite simply is a guitarist's, guitarist. I can amplify that by saying that he is the guitarist that I have had the most requests to interview - “Hey, have you ever thought about Henry Johnson, he's amazing”! I heard it a hundred times... I have known of Henry for a long time and admired his playing and wanted to get him in Jazz Guitar Today - but our roads kept missing each other. I was so happy that we finally put it together. Henry has a fantastic resume playing with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Stitt, Stanley Turrentine, and Joe Williams, WOW! He is an educator, an artist, and a gentleman! He is from my era and influenced by lots of the same people and likes a lot of the same music. It is with great pride that we bring to you this conversation with the great Henry Johnson.Go to jazzguitartoday.com and bassmusicianmagazine.com more interviews and lessons.
