One of the things that always amazed me about the songs that became big hits in the pop era between the 1950s and the 1990s was the sheer variety of musical styles that topped the charts. When doing research for this show I went into a bit of a spiral looking at Billboard charts for the late 1970s, and I got stuck on the summer of 1978, with the amazing wealth of songs that were in the top 20 at the time. Some of the songs, of course have fallen into the mists of time because they don’t get the oldies airplay anymore, and that’s a shame because there’s still some very good stuff there. This was the Top 20 chart for the week ending August 19, 1978 according to The Real American Top 40 Wiki page: Commodores – Three Times A Lady (↔) Frankie Valli – Grease (↔) Donna Summer – Last Dance (↔) Rolling Stones – Miss You (↔) Foreigner – Hot Blooded (↔) A Taste Of Honey – Boogie Oogie Oogie (↔) Pablo Cruise – Love Will Find A Way (↔) Barry Manilow – Copacabana (↔) Walter Egan – Magnet And Steel (↔) Andy Gibb – An Everlasting Love (↔) Olivia Newton-John – Hopelessly Devoted To You (↔) Joe Walsh – Life’s Been Good (↔) Toby Beau – My Angel Baby (↔) Atlanta Rhythm Section – I’m Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight (↔) Evelyn King – Shame (↑4) Exile – Kiss You All Over (↑2) Steve Martin – King Tut (↔) Chris Rea – Fool (If You Think It’s Over) (↑3) Earth Wind & Fire – Got To Get You Into My Life (↑10) Jackson Browne – The Load-Out/Stay (↔) Pretty much all of these songs, I wouldn’t mind listening to again. And that’s not always the case with songs at this level of the charts. (“Having My Baby,” anyone?) We have here a mix of disco, R&B, retro pop, ballads, a live track, a novelty song, a soundtrack title, about a half-dozen well-established acts and three one-hit wonders (I’m not counting Steve Martin there because it’s a novelty). And they’re all at varying levels of “good”! All of this is prologue to the fact that Stevie Nicks was in the thick of the music industry for a three-year period, either as a writer, a lead or a backup singer. All of which cemented her in the musical firmament. If she’d done nothing else after 1979, she’d still be fondly remembered. But in addition to being all the things above, she was also a muse for several artists, much of which we’re covering in this episode. I bumped into some problems with regard to quantifying songs about her, but I did my best and I’d be curious to know what you may think I’ve overlooked, because there were a few I did research on and got nowhere.

The Porcaro family is rock royalty. They made everything they touched better from their incredible session work to the many Toto hits and Grammys. Steve Porcaro has recently released a new solo album called The Very Day that shows him cleaning house. Most of these songs have been sitting around unfinished for decades so he finally committed to perfecting them (with help from friends like Michael McDonald and Jason Scheff) and getting them out in the world. Steve joins us this week to discuss the process of completing this album, as well as stories from his long session career. There's working with Quincy Jones and David Foster, there's working with Earth Wind and Fire and the Brothers Johnson, and there's his feelings on the many afterlives of "Human Nature" which he wrote and appeared on Thriller. I wish we could have talked for hours! Steve Porcaro The Hustle Podcast | creating podcasts | Patreon

1 Louis Armstrong - Zat You Santa Claus 2 Ella Fitzgerald - Blue Skies 3 Quincy Jones - Oh, Happy Day 4 Lady Gaga & Tony Bennett - Winter Wonderland 5 Ezra Collective - Hark The Herald Angels Sing 6 Robert Glasper - Make It Home 7 Diana Krall feat Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra - I'll Be Home For Christmas 8 Duke Ellington - Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy) 9 Ed Calle & Arturo Sandoval - Jingle Bells (Instrumental) 10 Willie Colon feat. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring legendary trumpeter and horn arranger Jerry Hey, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Jerry Hey trumpet interview" Find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here: https://bobreeves.com/blog/jerry-hey-trumpet-interview-the-other-side-of-the-bell-146 About Jerry Hey: Jerry Hey is one of the defining trumpet voices and horn arrangers in modern popular music. Born in Dixon, Illinois, into a deeply musical family, he honed his craft with Charlie Geyer and later at Indiana University under legendary pedagogue William Adam. After an early run co-founding the jazz-fusion band Seawind in Hawaii, Hey moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1970s and quickly became a first-call session player and arranger. From there, his sound is heard on a staggering number of iconic recordings. Hey's horn writing and trumpet playing helped shape Michael Jackson's Off the Wall and Thriller albums, and his long association with Quincy Jones produced landmark work for Earth, Wind & Fire, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Patti Austin, Barbra Streisand, Toto, and countless others. A six-time Grammy winner, he has been recognized repeatedly for his instrumental and vocal arrangements, as well as his contributions to major film and television scores, including Flashdance, The Color Purple, the Back to the Future trilogy, Forrest Gump, and Dreamgirls. Most recently, Hey has opened his personal archives in Notes From The Past 50 Years, a 250-page collection of pop excerpts spanning his studio career. The book gathers more than 200 of his favorite licks, along with personal stories and rare photos that trace his path from early days in Los Angeles to his most iconic sessions—including a few lesser-known musical gems. Equally at home leading a horn section, crafting a string chart, or delivering a lyrical flugelhorn solo, Hey remains a benchmark for precision, style, and imagination in the studio, with an influence that continues to shape how artists, arrangers, and producers think about horn sections today. "The Very Day" If you're wondering if the Connecticut-born Grammyt Award winning keyboardist and composer grew up with music in the house, the answer is yes--his father Joe Porcaro was a renowned jazz drummer who played with everyone from Sinatra to Stan Getz to Madonna. He also played on hundreds of film and television scores including The Wild Bunch, I Dream Of Jeannie and Edward Scissorhands. He also founded the Percussion Institute of Technology and later the drum department at the Los Angeles Music Academy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_College_of_Music). So, yeah music was the lifesblood of the Porcaro household and at very young ages, Steve and his brothers Mike and Jeff went into the family business. How early of an age you might be wondering? Well, at 17 when most of us were finishing our last year of high school and thinking about who and who wouldn't go with us to the prom, Steve was playing with Gary Wright's band on his 1976 Dream Weaver tour. A year later while most of us were fumbling our way through our first year of college, Steve and his brothers were in Boz Scaggs's band. In 1978 Steve and his brother Jeff along with a few other session playing pals formed their own band called Toto. How'd that work out? Well, 50 million albums later, I'd say it worked out very well, thank you. From "Hold The Line" to "Rosanna" to "Africa" Toto had a procession of hits, became one of the biggest bands on the planet and went on to compose the music for David Lynch's Dune. Steve left the fold in 1987 and went on to compose and score for countless film and television projects, including From Dusk Til Dawn 2, Eddie Murphy's Metro and he did all the original music for Justified. This is just a partial list, by the way--he also wrote the song "Human Nature" which Michael Jackson recorded on his Thriller album, the beginning of several compositions he wrote for Jackson to record. Considered one of the pioneers of analog synths, Porcaro's inventive loops appeared on works by everyone from Elton John to Don Henley. When it comes to artists he's collaborated with, here's a list that's going to knock you out: Hall and Oates, Earth Wind and Fire, Sheena Easton, Diana Ross, Warren Zevon, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, and Michael McDonald. Also a partial list. And speaking of Yes, Porcaro was good friends with Yes's Chris Squire and played in his band The Chris Squire Experiment. Porcaro's second solo album The Very Day is one of 2025's real bright spots. Featuring guest appearances by Stan Lynch, Jude Cole, Michael McDonald, Gardner Cole and his Toto pal David Paich, The Very Day is a stirring song cycle of effortless pop melodies, rootsy grooves and insanely catchy hooks. It's pure magic. And this conversation felt the same. Steve's an open book and a lovely guy and I can't wait for you to meet him, www.steveporcaromusic.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereo) www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com IG + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com)
Ellis Hall is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor and composer. He was described as "The Ambassador of Soul" by conductor, Jeff Tyzik. Hall has been blind since the age of 18. Citing Ray Charles as his inspiration, Hall has written over 4000 soul, gospel, blues and pop songs, and has performed with Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Toby Keith, Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Bobby Womack, Sheila E, Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power and Ray Charles. Ellis eventually mastered the drums, piano, keyboards, guitar, upright and electric bass. He was able to develop and define himself as a vocalist as well, possessing a five-octave range. Starting with the Ellis Hall Band opening for Earth Wind and Fire through the years as the lead singer for Tower of Power, Ellis has been making impactful music. Ellis both wrote and performed on the soundtracks of multiple television movies and films including The Lion King 2, Shrek 2, Chicken Run, Invincible, and Bruce Almighty, sang gospel tunes in the comedy film, Big Momma's House with Martin Lawrence, and sang a Louis Armstrong tune in the crime drama film Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio. Ellis Hall's latest single, a remake of the England Dan and John Ford Coley 1976 hit, “I'd Really Love To See You Tonight”. A deeply soulful ballad that marks his return to the heart of R&B blending classic smoothness with modern vibrancy, Hall channels the passionate artistry of Luther Vandross and the magnetic energy of Bruno Mars in a track that promises to captivate listeners across generations. Mike Murray stands as a multifaceted Recording Artist, Composer, Musician, and Producer in the Smooth Jazz and Chill Out genres. His journey into the realm of music commenced during his formative years, where summers spent at camp ignited his passion for the piano, played on a humble upright instrument. This initial introduction laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong passion.During high school, Murray's musical trajectory took an unexpected yet compelling turn when he secured a spot in a local funk band. However, his role evolved from pianist to drummer, revealing his adaptability and versatility. Though these musical seeds were sown, life beckoned him forward to explore new horizons.Across the years, Murray's musical horizons were greatly expanded by the influence of icons like George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Four Play, Santana, Hiroshima, Paul Hardcastle, Alex Bugnon, Earth Wind & Fire, Sly Stone, Mandrill, and an array of other revolutionary talents. With the release of his newest single, "Global Warning," the forth of seven singles in a series called Seven Stories, Mike Murray continues his musical journey, blending smooth grooves with deep stories. Following the bold energy of “ewe do ewe,” which marked a pivotal moment in his evolution, Murray takes the next step in his growth, inviting listeners to experience a sound that's personal, real, and always rhythm-driven.With Seven Stories, Murray begins a fresh chapter—one that brings together smooth grooves, real stories, and thoughtful moments. This new collection builds on the spirit of “ewe do ewe,” staying true to the idea of following your own path, but with a deeper sound and a wider range of feeling. Frizz and Bob trade in the grunge for grooves this week with a soul-cleansing deep dive into the radiant world of Earth, Wind & Fire. Frizz pours a Speyburn 10 Year Old Single Malt, while Bob sips on the peaty Kilchoman's Sanaig as they celebrate a band that blended funk, jazz, soul, gospel, and a little mysticism into pure musical joy. They dig into Maurice White's visionary genius, their rise through college campuses and cult films, and their evolution into one of the most dazzling, uplifting live acts of all time. From Love Is Life to September, Shining Star to Let's Groove, this episode is packed with towering horn lines, falsetto magic, cosmic stagecraft, and enough musical insight to make even Miles Davis tip his hat. Cue up the kalimba, light up the disco lasers, and get ready to sing a song because this one's all about hope, movement, and a legacy written in the stars.
Kruser talks about an Earth Wind and Fire song celebrating the month of September and LEX18's Bill Meck calls in to talk about some breakable Guiness World records in hour 2. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode we invite David Nathan to look back on his illustrious 60 years as "the British Ambassador of Soul". Our guest commences by recalling his gateway into Black American music: the covers of Shirelles and Miracles classics included on the first two Beatles albums. He furthermore describes the thrill of seeing Motown star Mary Wells supporting the Fab Four at Kilburn's State Cinema in October 1964, followed by his founding of the Nina Simone Appreciation Society. We hear about the Soul City record store David ran with the legendary Dave Godin – and about John Abbey's trailblazing Blues & Soul magazine, for which our guest began writing in 1968. Barney quotes from David's 1968 B&S profile of Aretha Franklin, with whom he later enjoyed a long friendship. The release of Make It Easy on Yourself – a box set David compiled of Dionne Warwick's immortal Scepter recordings – is the cue for us to hear clips from his 2012 audio interview with the Bacharach & David muse... and to learn about another "soulful diva" who became his close friend. We bring our guest's story more up-to-date with his reflections on yet another diva/pal, the one and only Chaka Khan. Mention of the former Rufus frontwoman's favourite producer, Arif Mardin, leads to discussion of Main Course, the Mardin-helmed album on which the Bee Gees "went disco" 50 long summers ago. David then reminisces about his own disco dalliances in '70s New York and his mid-'80s coastal switch to L.A. We wrap up by paying tribute to another key white writer on Black R&B and soul: the late Michael Lydon, whose voice can be heard in this episode introducing his fabulous 1977 audio interview with the wicked Wilson Pickett. Mark and Jasper talk us out with their thoughts on (and quotes from) pieces recently added to the RBP library, including Jim Farber's 1978 interview with Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White and Ian Winwood's 2001 trashing of Creed live in Louisville. Many thanks to special guest David Nathan. Visit his website at davidnathan.com. Dionne Warwick: Make It Easy On Yourself – The Scepter Recordings 1962-1971 is out now on SoulMusic Records. Pieces discussed: Aretha Franklin: Aretha's Artistry, Dionne Warwick (2012), Chaka Khan: Back...From Back In The Day, Back on course with the Bee Gees, How the Bee Gees got into Disco: An Oral History of Main Course, Arif Mardin: Producer, Wilson Pickett (1977), Return of the Wicked Pickett, Top Tunes: The Beach Boys, Bobby Womack: Bobby's got Understanding, Earth Wind & Fire: Extraterrestrial R&B, Creed live and From Kingston with love.

Many bands would be running out of ideas by their 8th album, but not Earth, Wind &Fire – many consider All ‘n All to be their best record. Freshly inspired by the varied sounds & rhythms of South America, Maurice White brought his genre-blending compositions to new heights on this 1977 album, as evidenced by the opening track, “Serpentine Fire”, which White himself described as Earth Wind & Fire's “most ambitious single”. All of these examples are what are called Irreversible Binomials & Trinomials. The cute phrases or names that ALWAYS appear in the same order. That sound really stupid if switched–”Jelly and peanut butter anyone?” Jon and Kurt, feeling this is truly excellent smart drivel, delve into the world of irreversible binomials and trinomials. Some they think have it wrong, others they agree are culturally accepted, while still others just seem right to our co-hosts. Yet, as always, they also disagree on a few.
