Her career in development spans 17 years where she held leadership positions in healthcare at academic medical centers, higher education and social service agencies.Heather also spent 7 years of her career building brands for national products including Post Kids Cereals-Honeycomb, Avon, US West and Tri-State Cadillac. During her time working on building brands, heather realized that she wanted to make a change and start a family. Heather wanted to make a difference and decided that the nonprofit sector was the best fit for her to make an impact. She now works for the Allied Foundation. This organization was created by a group of concerned pediatric physicians who wanted to address the lack of access to essential needs for health and well being. They are currently in the process of developing period projects to bring menstrual products to those in need.Segment 2Tommy shares his experience purchasing diapers for his own children. For some families, the cost of diapers alone can be nearly 14% of their income. A member of Allied Physicians, Doctor Sher, noticed that many of her patients were developing diaper rashes and bacterial infections due to their family's inability to afford diapers. The Allied Foundation has been serving Long Island and Queens but 2020 the need has become exacerbated. Last year they assisted 40,000 families, and Heather believes that there are even more in need. They recently distributed 966,000 diapers and are closely approaching 1 million. Heather thanks Flexible Systems, a company that has assisted them in the distributing the diapersSegment 3The Allied foundation receives support from the national diaper bank and many more. They also advocate politically for families in need and seek support for causes like End Diaper Need. It is their goal to make things simple for the agencies they support so that they can help as many people as possible. They have worked with contact tracers in order to find families who are in quarantine and in need of diapers so that they can send supplies directly to them. Heather observes that many politicians are simply not aware of the need for this service but after showing them the statistics they are ready to assist. Heather speaks on the need for menstrual products. The Allied Foundation is aiming to work with the Alliance for Period Supplies.‍Segment 4Heather believes that even if they are able to successfully advocate for families and minimize the need, Allied Foundation will continue to assist those who fall through the cracks. In this interview with Heather Edwards, Antony and Marika learn a lot about gender, sex, sexuality, BDSM and more! Heather has been a pelvic physical therapist since 2003 and is one of only a few AASECT (American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists) certified sex counselors in the world. As an artist, she has a line of coloring books the blend gender-inclusive genital anatomy with fun and approachable designs. As a producer and host, she created a sex-ed-in-a-bar event series, Vino & Vulvas, in 2015. In this episode, Heather tells us about her journey in pelvic health and how she fell into it when no one else wanted to! Along the way, Heather discovered an interest in sexuality and wanted to learn more about this topic, so she went on to do further studies. Some of the questions that we asked Heather were: - What does LGBTQIA stand for? - What is the difference between sex and gender? - As a health or fitness professional, how can we support people of all genders and orientations in our clinics? How important is the environment and our language? (NB Heather recommended the podcast Decolonising Fitness) - Where can health and fitness professionals learn more about supporting LGBTQIA clients? - When doing a subjective assessment, how do we create a safe space so that our clients feel comfortable sharing information? - What does BDSM stand for and how can knowledge of this area help in working with clients with pelvic pain? - When people talk of penetrative sex as being the goal, how can we introduce other aspects of sensuality into their rehabilitation program? - Are there any particular things you'd like pelvic health physiotherapists to know about gender reaffirmation surgery? In Episode 18 Amanda speaks with Heather Edwards, pelvic physical therapist, sex counselor and educator, and founder of Vino and Vulvas. Heather talks about their journey from physical therapist to pelvic physical therapist to becoming certified in sexuality education and counseling. They discuss sexuality, gender identity, binary vs. non-binary, and BDSM! Heather opens our eyes to the importance of feeling heard, seen, and understood not only in our personal relationships but also in our experiences with medical professionals. She strives to let her patients unfold their stories for her without assuming hetero-normative and stereotypical gender roles and inspires us to be open-minded and welcoming to the people we encounter in our lives, too. Heather Edwards, PT, MPT has been a pelvic physical therapist for 15 years in western North Carolina. She is a University of Michigan trained Sexuality Counselor and Educator. She founded Vino & Vulvas in 2015 and it quickly became her favorite thing to do. She teaches community classes such as “Field Guide to Your Crotch” for transgender and nonbinary folx. Heather created the Transgender Pelvic Health Survey (currently in progress) and teamed up with Nova Southeastern University and the Pelvic Health Research Initiative for its implementation and data analysis. In 2016, she presented at the Southeastern Transgender Health Summit on the topic of pelvic PT considerations for the surgical trans patient. She presented at the 2018 AASECT conference on the topic of BDSM/Kink and Pelvic Health with the fabulous Aleece Fosnight, PA-C, CSC, CSE. She teaches Transgender Pelvic Health nationally with Pelvic Guru. Despite all her clinical stuff, really Heather considers herself an artist… and if truth be told, she’d love to just draw fantastical crotch doodles all day. This unusual hobby has led to her creation of her first self-published book, Important Parts: A Coloring Book for the Crotch Enthusiast which is available at downtown bookstores in Asheville, at the V&V events, and online through Amazon. Vino & Vulvas - A community conversation about sex Today I am delighted to have Heather Edwards, who has been a pelvic physical therapist for 14 years and is currently completing the University of Michigan's Certificate Program in Sex Counseling and Education. In 2015 she founded Vino & Vulvas, an inclusive, public, monthly event that connects sexual health providers with community members through educational panel discussions about sexuality. How did Vino and Vulvas come about? Tune in to hear the hilarious story of how Heather went from an impromptu chat with two guys at a bar about topics from sexual repression to vaginal discharge, to launching Vino and Vulvas. It was that captive audience at the bar that, “made me realize we didn't need to be just talking to women, but we needed to talk to everyone!” Heather explains the atmosphere she was looking for as sitting in a living room, chatting with friends with a glass of wine or a cup of coffee - not your usual workshop. Join us to find out how Vino and Vulvas creates a safe environment where everyone is included and unnecessary confrontation is avoided. This removes the fear factor and the potential for next day regrets, something that Heather refers to as a “vulnerability hangover” What do we talk about? “I like to lean into discomfort and create a safe place where we can dig into things,” Heather admits, “I'm constantly having to dig into places that are uncomfortable.” Press play to hear about some of the topics that have been discussed and those that are planned in the near future.
