The government has recently removed Relationships and Sexuality Education, or RSE, guidelines in schools without implementing a clear alternative. The RSE guidelines were changed in 2020, to better support, and include updates to the the 2007 curriculum for primary and secondary school students, on topics such as the prominence of social media, bullying and cyber-bullying, and consent, in an age-appropriate manner. With the removal of the 2020 guidelines, many educators are wondering how they adequately cover the topics covered in RSE. As well as this, concerns have been raised about whether a move like this will impact the mental health of students, especially from minority communities, such as the LGBTQIA+ community. News and Editorial Director and Monday Wire Host, Joel, spoke to the Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation New Zealand, Shaun Robinson, about the removal of RSE guidelines without the government clearly indicating to an alternative, and the organisations concerns regarding these developments. They started off by asking him what RSE is.

The Limits of Sexuality Education: Love, Sex, and Adolescent Masculinities in Urban India (Routledge, 2024) explores different strands of thinking about sexuality education in contemporary urban India. It interrogates the limits of sexuality education as we know it today by rethinking adolescent masculinities in middle-class urban India. This book contributes to the wide gap in theorising sexuality education and adolescent masculinities in urban India. It presents an adolescent perspective on sexuality education, looks at adolescent love from the school teachers' perspective, and tries to understand a teacher's negotiations with student romance. It unravels the sexual and romantic lives of adolescents and examines the circulation of sexual knowledge and sources of information on sex that adolescent boys in India have access to. This book uncovers the limits of sexuality education by examining State, feminist, Christian, and sexological materials on sexuality education in Mumbai and Delhi. Based on detailed research and narratives from teachers, young men, and women, the book explores adolescent male romance and its affective registers, adolescent male sexual knowledge, and the regulation of romance in school spaces. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of education, sexuality and gender studies, masculinity studies, and sex education as well as those interested in education policy, education politics, educational research, and inclusion and special education. Located at the intersection of sexuality studies, education, masculinity studies, and cultural studies, it will also appeal to those working in sexuality education in urban India within the complex web of the middle classes, consumerism, post-feminism, romance, adolescent masculinities, and cinema. CW: Discussion on sex, sexuality, and fatphobiaFriends, I hope you were able to join me last week for part one of this conversation with my guest Angela Corry. Angela is a clinical and sexual health educator, an expert in fatphobia and sex, and last week we talked about body image and fatphobia and how perceptions have changed throughout history. Fatphobia is very pervasive in our society and it shows up everywhere, especially in areas of sexuality and pleasure. This second episode with Angela really focuses on pleasure. It's our right, in whatever body, as a human, to experience pleasure on every level, including sexually. But why don't those of us in bigger bodies often feel comfortable experiencing or seeking pleasure? And how can we change that? As Angela states right at the start of our conversation, “sexy isn't a size”. We deserve to feel good. What feels good for our body, whether a great orgasm or the pleasure of a wonderful bath in a tub that fits us, is pleasurable and we deserve that. Why is that hard for us to accept if our bodies are bigger? It's very much a link between fat and sex and fat and food and the way societal structures drill certain reluctances into us due to size. Much of the work Angela does with her clients starts with confidence and self-esteem, it starts with helping people eliminate the barriers we have between us and experiencing pleasure. We talk about learning to accept our bodies and touch our bodies, bringing all five senses into our pleasure, and not being afraid of sex toys or pillows or adjustments needed to make sex more pleasurable for us. This episode dives into everything we don't talk about enough when it comes to fat, sex, and pleasure. I'm so glad you're here for this!__About Angela Corry:Angela Corry, RN, BScN, ACCN, is a clinical educator and sexual health educator for Loving Choices in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alberta, her Advanced Critical Care Nursing (ACCN) specialty from Mount Royal University and her certification in Holistic Sexual Health Education from the Institute of Sexuality Education and Enlightenment (ISEE). Angela has over 20 years of nursing experience in emergency and intensive care as a bedside and clinical nurse educator. During this time, she has contributed to several medical journals, including the Emergency Medical Journal. For the past two years, while focusing on health promotion and wellness, Angela realized that her pre-conceived notions about sexuality and body image were enmeshed with mainstream society's views on what is “normal,” “healthy,” or “feasible.” She believes it is necessary to reflect on the nature of sexuality and size diversity and how they fit and are used in our social, economic, and political structures. Angela wants to help empower individuals to live authentically by helping clients and professionals make choices that cultivate body positivity, accept size diversity and personal empowerment, enhance sexual well-being, celebrate the diversity of sexual expression, and promote equity for all within the current structures of our fat-phobic society.__Resources mentioned in this episode:“Fat” by Hanne Blank“Better Sex Through Mindfulness: How Women Can Cultivate Desire” by Lori A. Friends welcome to another episode of Thrive Beyond Size. Today's topic is so big that you'll hear from my guest twice. We're doing a two-parter, part one this week and part two next week. My guest is Angela Corry and she's a clinical and sexual health educator from right here in my hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. Angela and I are going to talk about pleasure at every size. Sex? Yes. Intimacy? Yes. But also just pleasure in general. Enjoying pleasure. For this conversation, we are really focusing on why women often don't feel deserving of pleasure which often stems from the fat-phobic society we live in. Men suffer from this too, of course, but women do more so and we're focusing on women in this episode. But why is fat our foe? And how can we see fat as just a fact of who we are and not what we deserve? Angela shares a bit about her personal journey and how she came to understand that her preconceived notions about sexuality and body image were entwined with mainstream society's views on “normal” health and size. That brought about a change in her and she has devoted herself to helping empower individuals to live authentically, accept size, and enhance sexual well-being ever since. Angela and I talk through the history of body image, tracing through changing eras from when fat was preferred in culture to where it shifted and thin became the overriding aesthetic focus. Angela shares a very personal and powerful story that illustrates how much work we each have to do to step out of society's viewpoint. When did we collectively stop viewing fat as just a body size and start seeing it as disgusting or something to avoid? And why do we allow our size to dictate our right to pleasure? These are questions we explore in this episode and Angela is so amazing, so insightful, that I can't wait for you to hear this episode and the next one with her.__About Angela Corry:Angela Corry, RN, BScN, ACCN, is a clinical educator and sexual health educator for Loving Choices in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
