Episode Notes Join us we dive into the mind of 80's heart throb Scott Valentine Aka Nick from Family Ties. He'll take us on his journey from Hollywood to Red Coral Universe. Scott Valentine was born and raised in Saratoga Springs, New York and first discovered acting at age five doing plays in his parents' garage. He appeared in a few high school plays, but didn't pursue acting as a career until his second semester of college. He moved to New York City and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where he completed the school's three-year program in a year and a half. He held a few odd jobs such as short order cook and researcher for a publishing firm, and he won a few roles off-off Broadway. He signed a contract for a daytime soap and was about to screen test for a role in the feature film, "Lords of Discipline" but was accidently hit by a truck on September 17, 1981. After three years of convalescing, he left New York for Los Angeles where he landed the part of Nick Moore on the hit series, Family Ties Now you can show your support by purchasing FB stars. He completed the three-year program in one and a half years. He got as far as a screen test for the film The Lords of Discipline when he was hit, run over, and dragged by a truck on September 17, 1981 and his career was halted for three years as he recovered. He moved to Los Angeles and landed a recurring role on the TV series Family Ties as Nick Moore, the loveable but dim-witted boyfriend of Mallory Keaton from 1985 to 1989, for seasons 4 through 7. During an interview for Montreal radio station CJAD, Valentine thought the role was not challenging enough for the money he was receiving, saying: "I'm so glad I went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and to all the other fine acting institutions so I could grunt on primetime television. The primal dig, the date from hell. It was a lot of fun, but literally there were times where I only had to utter two guttural utterances in a show and they paid me a bundle of cash for it. I felt bad at times. Valentine's success as Nick Moore on Family Ties led to three separate spin-offs. The first starred Valentine and actor Herschel Bernardi called Taking It Home. Filming was canceled when Bernardi died in 1986. The second spin-off placed Valentine's character in a Friends-like environment in New York City. The third was a pilot episode for a spin-off titled The Art of Being Nick; the episode aired once and co-starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus. "It came in number two and they still didn't pick it up," recalled Valentine. He has appeared since then as a guest actor in several hit television series such as CSI: NY, NewsRadio, and JAG; his first major motion picture, My Demon Lover; and numerous TV and straight-to-video movies. He also voiced The Phantom in Phantom 2040. He portrayed Metallo in an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman TV series. Valentine is a partner in Excelsior Capital Partners, a boutique investment firm that focuses on the renewable and sustainable energy sector.[ Find out more at https://still-toking-with.pinecast.co

While a student studying for his BFA at NYU, David was cast in the original Broadcast production of Stephen Sondheim's "Merrily We Roll Along", directed by Harold Prince, then appeared as Peter Van Daan in the Off-Broadway chamber musical, "Yours, Anne", followed by touring as Motel the Tailor in "Fiddler On The Roof" opposite Herschel Bernardi, after which he returned to gain his degree. David later interned at the Playwrights Horizons where he became interested in casting. After a brief stint in a theatrical agency, he joined the casting department at Grey Advertising, where he began learning the commercial industry and subsequently worked for casting director, Bonnie Timmerman on "Dirty Dancing", Roman Polanski's "Frantic" starring Harrison Ford, "Ironweed", Disney's "Enchanted" starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson and the third season of "Miami Vice", the world premieres of Michael John La Chuisa's "The Petrified Prince" for the Public Theater and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Whistle Down the Wind", both directed by Mr. Prince. This led to 30 years as a casting director at Donna DeSeta Casting, one of New York's busiest offices, personally casting over 2000 TV commercials, and developed techniques for teaching commercial acting, which he brings to his classes at Manhattan School of Music, NYU, Pace University, Actors Connection, other private studios around the city, as well as to his musical theater performance and auditioning classes at AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic Academy) Testimonials about David include statements such as: "Your class to this day has been one of the most valuable classes I've ever taken"; "This truly is an undergraduate degree in commercial acting! The added benefit is how incredibly kind you are and that you want every actor in your class to succeed". A film from 1976 about the anti-Communist blacklist. Written, directed and acted by formerly blacklisted artists, and starring Woody Allen. Featuring guest co-host Aaron Leonard author of “The Folksingers & The Bureau”. Directed by by Martin Ritt (blacklisted 1951), written by Walter Bernstein (blacklisted 1950) and co-starring Michael Murphy, Andrea Marcovicci & Zero Mostel, Herschel Bernard, Loyd Gough & Joshua Shelly (blacklisted in 1950, 53, 52 and 52, respectively). Starring Woody Allen. How is the world wrong about this movie? From Andras: The world is wrong about Woody Allen. The world is wrong about 20th century anti-Communism. And the world is wrong about anti-semitism. Danny Peary chose “The Front” as his best picture of 1976 in his book “The Alternate Oscars” and it feels like a big influence of Larry David, but for reasons that are probably obvious this film, which has so much to say to us at this particular cultural moment is not a part of the cultural dialogue. Let’s change that. My guest for this month is West Anthony, and he’s joined me to discuss the film he chose for me, the 1976 comedy-drama film The Front. You can follow the show on Twitter @cinemagadfly. Show notes: Not sure what happened to the audio in the introduction, apologies! The Hollywood blacklist is a term for the treatment of people in the entertainment industry who refused to name names to the House Un-American Activities Committee from 1947 to 1960 For a more in depth take on the blacklist, check out the latest season of the phenomenal You Must Remember This podcast WonderCon is a comic book convention that was held annually in SF until it was cruelly moved to the LA area in 2012. Yes I’m still bitter about it. West also recommends the Gabrielle de Cuir directed Thirty Years of Treason by Eric Bentley Among the people famously blacklisted were Lillian Hellman, Lionel Stander, Paul Robeson, and Zero Mostel This film was directed by blacklisted director Martin Ritt, who also directed the film from our third episode, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold I’m just not a fan of Woody Allen. He’s too painfully neurotic for me, even before I start thinking about whatever the hell happened with his daughter and step-daughter Another Woody film where he only acts is the Paul Mazursky film Scenes from a Mall I’ve been a huge fan of Fiddler on the Roof, and Zero Mostel in it, since I was a little kid Elia Kazan is one of the more interesting stories of directors and the blacklist The writer of this film, Walter Bernstein, was also blacklisted As were many of its stars, including Herschel Bernardi and Lloyd Gough So was the father of actress Julie Garfield, actor John Garfield, which may have contributed to his death from heart problems West’s reference to bodily fluids is, of course, from the excellent Dr. Strangelove Hallie Flanagan ran the Federal Theatre Project, as part of FDR’s WPA program She gave Orson Welles the money to make his Voodoo Macbeth She also gave Marc Blitzstein the money to make The Cradle Will Rock Which was remade in 1999 by Tim Robbins LBJ said in 1966 “I do not believe that this generation of Americans is willing to resign itself to going to bed each night by the light of a Communist moon” Red Channels named 151 entertainers it claimed were communists Trumbo is a 2015 film about Hollywood Ten member Dalton Trumbo Another film about the blacklist is 1991s Guilty by Suspicion, directed by Irwin Winkler and starring Robert De Niro One of the co-writers of Guilty by Suspicion was Abraham Polonsky, who also wrote and directed Force of Evil with John Garfield, but he was so offended by what Irwin Winkler did that he had his name removed from it Guilty by Suspicion also stars Annette Bening Good Night and Good Luck by George Clooney is about McCarthyism, not the blacklist, but it’s also a great film about government overreach Panic in the Streets is a 1950 film, directed by Elia Kazan, and starring Zero Mostel Both West and I think that On the Waterfront, written by Budd Schulberg, was a justification for Kazan’s willingness to name names Lee J. Cobb was also forced to testify in front of the committee Leonard Bernstein wrote the score for On the Waterfront, and the film featured incredible performances from Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, and Eva Marie Saint I still haven’t seen Hail, Caesar! yet, which is a damn shame Nothing better than comparing the work of the Coen brothers to that of fellow Criterion Collection auteur Michael Bay Paranoid American films from the 70s include Three Days of the Condor, Klute, The Parallax View, and All the President’s Men Everyone who reads this needs to go subscribe to Musical Notation with West Anthony. Right now. I’ll wait It’s part of the awesome Battleship Pretension Podcast Fleet You can also follow West’s amazing show on twitter @notationpod Rent or buy the film from Amazon Rent or buy the film on iTunes

The beloved 1964 musical "Fiddler on the Roof," with its book by Joseph Stein and score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, is back on Broadway this season. Based on writer Sholem Aleichem's Yiddish tales of Tevye the milkman, this new production of "Fiddler" is the show's fifth return to the Great White Way. The role of Tevye was originated by Zero Mostel, played on stage and film by Chaim Topol, and on Broadway by Herschel Bernardi, Theodore Bikel, Leonard Nimoy and Harvey Fierstein, among others. In this production, five-time Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein has the role, and the director is Bartlett Sher, acclaimed for his Rodgers and Hammerstein revivals on Broadway. But do we really need yet another "Fiddler on the Roof?" New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood explains why we just might. "Fiddler on the Roof" runs through July 3 at the Broadway Theatre.
