Il y a quelques semaines, une marque danoise faisait parler d'elle en lançant un sac à main conçu à partir de cuir… d'orange et de cactus. Derrière cette innovation, une tendance de fond : la recherche d'alternatives au cuir animal. Le cuir d'orange, par exemple, est fabriqué à partir de déchets d'agrumes : écorces, pépins ou pulpe revalorisés pour créer une matière souple et résistante. Quant au cuir de cactus, il provient des feuilles du figuier de barbarie, un cactus particulièrement peu gourmand en eau.Et ces alternatives se multiplient. On trouve aujourd'hui du cuir d'ananas, mais aussi des matières à base de chanvre ou de lin. L'idée est toujours la même : proposer des produits plus respectueux des animaux, tout en limitant l'impact environnemental.Cette évolution s'inscrit dans le mouvement de la mode dite "cruelty free", autrement dit une mode qui cherche à éviter toute souffrance animale. Un sujet porté depuis longtemps par GAIA, qui observe aujourd'hui une vraie évolution des mentalités et des marques.Alors bien sûr, certains diront que c'est surtout du marketing. Mais au fond, peu importe la motivation : si cela permet de réduire l'exploitation animale, c'est déjà un changement important.Et contrairement à certaines idées reçues, la mode vegan n'est pas forcément inaccessible. On trouve désormais des alternatives pour tous les budgets, du quotidien aux produits plus haut de gamme.Autre idée reçue : un vêtement vegan n'est pas automatiquement écologique. Tout dépend des matériaux utilisés et de leur mode de production. Mais globalement, ces alternatives végétales nécessitent souvent moins de ressources que l'élevage animal.Même la laine, souvent perçue comme "naturelle" et sans souffrance, soulève des questions. Dans les productions industrielles, les animaux peuvent subir du stress et des traitements brutaux lors de la tonte.L'enjeu aujourd'hui, c'est donc surtout l'information. Lire les étiquettes, comprendre les matières utilisées, s'interroger sur l'origine des produits. Parce qu'en prenant simplement le temps de regarder ce qu'on achète, on peut déjà faire évoluer nos habitudes de consommation.Et peut-être aussi notre regard sur la mode.Vous aimez ce contenu ? Matériau traditionnel, le cuir sert à la fabrication des vêtements, des chaussures, des sacs, des meubles, mais aussi des sièges de voitures de luxe. Après le trou d'air provoqué par la pandémie du Covid-19, le marché mondial du cuir a connu une forte croissance. Croissance plombée par la guerre au Moyen-Orient, qui a frappé un secteur en pleine mutation. Matériaux innovants, modes de consommation qui changent, impact environnemental... Les industriels du cuir l'ont bien compris : ils privilégient désormais l'approvisionnement durable et éthique, la transparence des chaînes d'approvisionnement et des réseaux de distribution plus proches du consommateur. Grâce à la demande croissante, le marché mondial des cuirs et peaux brutes pourrait atteindre 178,8 milliards de dollars d'ici 2034. Une demande croissante, une clientèle fidèle dans les pays du Golfe L'essor de ces matières premières est soutenu par la maroquinerie. À lui seul, ce secteur représente plus de 566,23 milliards de dollars aujourd'hui et devrait dépasser 982,42 milliards de dollars en 2034. Si l'Inde et la Chine tirent la production mondiale de cuir brut – l'essor de la classe moyenne stimule la demande dans ces pays –, la France et l'Italie restent les leaders de la maroquinerie haut de gamme. « Les fabricants français travaillent une matière noble, durable et réparable. Et ils le font en France. Nos entreprises ont un savoir-faire nécessaire. C'est la raison pour laquelle les articles français sont extrêmement demandés à l'international. L'image de marque est très forte », affirme Philippe Gilbert, directeur de l'Observatoire économique de l'Alliance France cuir.  « La France est le quatrième exportateur mondial pour l'ensemble de la production du cuir brut au produit fini, derrière la Chine, le Vietnam et l'Italie », précise l'expert. Les exportations de la filière française ont dépassé 18 milliards d'euros, en 2025, en légère baisse après des années de fortes hausses. Des chiffres obtenus grâce notamment à la demande des clients et des clientes du Golfe. La filière française reste mobilisée Un commerce important qui subit un coup d'arrêt avec la guerre au Moyen-Orient. En témoignent les chiffres en recul au premier trimestre de cette année du numéro un mondial du luxe, LVMH. Le groupe, qui détient notamment Louis Vuitton, Dior et Sephora, a vu ses ventes plonger de moitié au Moyen-Orient au cours du seul mois de mars. Son concurrent, le groupe Hermès, est lui aussi pénalisé : son activité dans la région a dégringolé de 40%. Mais « le secteur est très résilient », souligne le directeur de l'Observatoire économique. La filière française demeure mobilisée et garde les yeux rivés sur l'Asie et les États-Unis, qui restent les moteurs de croissance de ce marché.

Si je vous dis que cette montre est une OW, déjà, vous connaissez mon amour pour cette marque. Si je vous dis ensuite qu'elle fait figure d'ovni, ou d'ohni dans la gamme, là ça devient interessant. Car oui, elle est très différente de ce que vous pouvez voir chez OW et tient une place à part dans leur catalogue Et si enfin, je vous dis qu'elle vient de sortir en une nouvelle déclinaison sur cuir qui lui va à ravir, suite à un épisode récent et une suggestion faite à Charles Le Menestrel, patron de la marque, alors là vous avez envie d'en savoir plus....et vous avez raison, car j'en parle ici et maintenant ! J'en profite d'ailleurs pour comparer les deux déclinaisons, acier ou cuir qui changent complètement la montre, c'est assez dingue ! As part of this year's Locarno Film Festival, scholars at the Università della Svizzera italiana organized a conference called Cinema Audiovisual Futures, with a series of panels and workshops exploring cinema's importance in constructing a new and alternative futures. As part of the conference, Film Comment editor Devika Girish moderated a panel with filmmaker Suneil Sanzgiri and writer and programmer Greg de Cuir called Digital Migrations. Their conversation delved into the ways in which digital media allows us to represent and respond to colonialism, diaspora, and violence, touching on Sanzgiri's films At Home But Not At Home (2019) and Golden Jubilee (2021), among others.
