ARTIST BIOGRAPHY - JON HENDRICKS Jon Hendricks is not only one of the world's favorite jazz vocalists, but is widely considered to be the "Father of Vocalese", the greatest innovator of the art form. Vocalese is the art of setting lyrics to recorded jazz instrumental standards (such as the big band arrangements of Duke Ellington and Count Basie), then arranging voices to sing the parts of the instruments. Thus is created an entirely new form of the work, one that tells a lyrically interesting story while retaining the integrity of the music. Hendricks is the only person many jazz greats have allowed to lyricize their music, for no one writes hipper, wittier, or more touching words, while extracting from a tune the emotions intended by the composer, more sympathetically than Hendricks. For his work as a lyricist, jazz critic and historian Leonard Feather called him the "Poet Laureate of Jazz" while Time dubbed him the "James Joyce of Jive." Born in 1921 in Newark, Ohio, young Jon and his fourteen siblings were moved many times, following their father's assignments as an A.M.E. pastor, before settling permanently in Toledo. As a teen Jon's first interest was in the drums, but before long he was singing on the radio regularly with another Toledo native, the extraordinary pianist Art Tatum. After serving in the Army during WWII, Jon went home to attend University of Toledo as a Pre-law major, courtesy of the G.I. Bill. Just when he was about to enter the graduate law program, the G.I. benefits ran out, and he realized he'd have to chart a different course. Recalling that Charlie Parker had, at a stop in Toledo two years prior, encouraged him to come to New York and look him up, Hendricks moved there and began his singing career. In 1957 he teamed with Dave Lambert and Annie Ross to form the legendary vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross. With Jon as lyricist, the trio perfected the art of vocalese and took it around the world, earning them the designation of the "Number One Vocal Group in the World" for five years in a row from Melody Maker magazine. After six years the trio disbanded for solo careers, but not before leaving behind a catalog of legendary recordings, most of which have never gone out of print. Countless singers cite the work of LH&R as an influence, from the Manhattan Transfer to Al Jarreau to Bobby McFerrin. Pursuing a solo career, Hendricks moved his young family to London in 1968, partially so that his five children could receive a better education. While based in London he toured Europe and Africa, performed frequently on British television, and appeared in the British film Jazz is Our Religion and the French film Hommage a Cole Porter. His sold-out club dates drew fans such as the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. Five years later the Hendricks family settled in California, where Jon worked as the jazz critic for the San Francisco Chronicle and taught classes at California State University at Sonoma and the University of California at Berkeley. A piece he wrote specifically for the stage about the history of jazz, Evolution of the Blues, ran an unprecedented five years at the Broadway Theatre in San Francisco and another year in Los Angeles. His television documentary, Somewhere to Lay My Weary Head, received Emmy, Iris, and Peabody awards. Hendricks recorded several critically-acclaimed albums on his own, some with his wife Judith and daughters Michele and Aria contributing. He collaborated with old friends The Manhattan Transfer for their seminal 1985 album, Vocalese, which won seven Grammy Awards. He's served on the Kennedy Center Honors committee under Presidents Carter, Reagan, and Clinton. In 2000, Hendricks returned to his hometown to teach at the University of Toledo, where he was appointed Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies and received an honorary Doctorate of the Performing Arts. He was recently selected to be the first American jazz artist to lecture at the Sorbonne in Paris, a university established in the year 1248. His fifteen voice group, the Jon Hendricks Vocalstra at the University of Toledo, performed to a standing ovation at the Sorbonne earlier this year. As if perfecting one original art form weren't enough, Hendricks now finds himself happily penning lyrics to some of the world's most beautiful classical pieces. The Vocalstra is currently preparing to give the world premiere of a vocalese version of Rimsky-Korsakov's lush "Scheherazade" with the Toledo Symphony in February 2003. Summer of 2003 will find Jon on tour with the "Four Brothers", a quartet consisting of Hendricks and three of the best-known male vocalists in jazz: Kurt Elling, Mark Murphy, and Kevin Mahogany. Next for Dr. Hendricks is lyricizing and arranging Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, as well as work on two books, teaching, and continued touring with his Vocalstra. He also makes an appearance in the upcoming Al Pacino film, People I Know. http://www.harmonyware.com/JonHendricks/bio.html

Steve Swart was on the bandstand and in college at CMU just in time to see owner Harvey Vanier turn The Foolery into Rubbles. Mt. Pleasant has always been at the dead center of the state of Michigan when it comes to cross-over touring due to WCMU and the college music market. One quick look north from Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor, Detroit and Lansing, all eyes hit the college town. The blended artistry from roots folk, to deep blues, power pop, metal, and first generation punk all huddled in this marketplace, long after the '60s Flint scene dispersed.     Yes, you could see Texas blues man Gatemouth Brown, followed by funky rockin' Fishbone, and then a tour stop for the punk legends Dead Milkmen. Or how about Blues Brother Matt 'Guitar' Murphy? Verve Pipe? Etc...this was a Michigan hub town thanks to the venues, Theatres, and WCMU radio.    While Swart notes that much remains in historical value, the word-of-mouth of the area's scene is more of a recollection and myth, than the hub it once was. North of Mt. Pleasant lies Interlochen, which seems to have taken on the persona that Mt. Pleasant used to be known for. A quick look at Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, or over west to Big Rapids or Grand Rapids, or even east to the Tri-Cities and you can see speckles of the majestic college town scene. Swart is taking the Mt. Pleasant music history seriously and is not only documenting it, but releasing lost shows on YouTube. It's a Thursday night in late March and I am surrounded by people in orange shirts and sweaters, as well as people who are working hard to earn the right to wear these orange shirts and sweaters, in an old Fire Hall near Aden Bowman Collegiate. Specifically, I'm in a meeting room where large maps are spread out on tables and new Saskatoon Search and Rescue trainees are learning how to read these maps. It's training day for new recruits of Saskatoon Search and Rescue. It's an intense process. Whether you are a trainee or a veteran member of the team, you are put through scenarios and taught skills that will empower you to help find people when they go missing in all types of situations. It really does amaze me that these people commit so much of their time and energy to this group. Since 2019, Saskatoon Search and Rescue have responded to 86 missing person's activations, mostly at the request of the Saskatoon Police Service. Searches can take place in neighbourhoods throughout Saskatoon, along the South Saskatchewan, or in thick forests of northern Saskatchewan. As you will hear in this episode, Saskatoon Search and Rescue work closely as a team in order to do their job. Sheri Denis and Carla Egan are the two featured guests in this episode. Carla is the Communications Director with the group and is training to be a Saskatoon Search and Rescue Manager. Sheri Denis is a volunteer searcher who is also the Director of Project Lifesaver. This unique program protects people who are at risk of wandering in our community. Participants wear personalized wristbands that emit a radio-frequency tracking signal. If a person with a wristband becomes lost, Saskatoon Search and Rescue can use this tracking signal to locate them. The program started thanks to a very generous donation from the Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatoon Police Service Foundation, and has grown thanks to the generosity of the community. Sheri, who works as an Educational Assistant, puts her heart into this work and I think that comes through in our conversation. She even demonstrates how her sophisticated equipment works! By day, Carla Egan works in a long-term care home here in Saskatoon as a recreation coordinator. Tonight, she is proudly wearing an orange Saskatoon Search and Rescue shirt and jacket. Carla worked really hard to earn her place on the team. In the fall of 2020, she saw a social media post from Saskatoon Search and Rescue looking for new members. Her kids were becoming more independent and her background of working with people with dementia gave her the confidence to think she could help. Nearly four years later, Carla says she has grown in so many ways thanks to her training and made friends with people from all walks of life.Carla shares some very powerful stories in our conversation and how her colleagues are always there to support each-other when the job gets difficult.I want to mention that Saskatoon Search and Rescue is a non-profit organization and relies on donations and grants for its funding. The organization's biggest fundraising event takes place on Monday, April 22nd at the Broadway Theatre. It is hosting the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival which is made up of some amazing films celebrating unique outdoor films. Tickets are 20 dollars each and you can purchase them on the Broadway Theatre's website or at the door. I have my tickets and hope to see you there!Thank you so much for listening to this episode and for continuing to support a local, independent podcast here in Saskatoon. This month, the Broadway Theatre is celebrating 30 years as a community owned and operated theatre in Saskatoon which is an achievement worth celebrating. The Broadway is many things to many people. For music lovers, it's a place where they can see their favourite artists and bands in an intimate setting and discover new and emerging talent from across the world. If you love live theatre, then you have no doubt seen the Saskatoon Soaps perform on stage or watched a theatre group perform during the Fringe festival. Movie fans flock to the Broadway for classic films, the best in global cinema and independent Canadian movies. I even dragged my wife with me to see a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan at the Broadway…an experience I know she is grateful for!For the past 30 years, the Broadway has been a hub of cultural and community events in Saskatoon and the future looks bright for the next 30 thanks to strong leadership, community support and an army of passionate volunteers. I was fortunate to speak with three amazing people who love the Broadway Theatre. Holly Gilroy is the Broadway's Operations Manager, Aryn Otterbein is its Artistic Director and April Sora is a previous board member and passionate volunteer. Together, they cover everything from the joys of working with the community to ensuring the next 30 years are just as successful for the Theatre.Thank you so much for listening to this special bonus episode of the podcast. The Broadway is one of my favourite places in Saskatoon and we are really lucky to have such a hub for community events in our city. Cheers...Eric

Hello, I'm Eric Anderson and welcome to YXE Underground. If you are a long time listener of the podcast, thank you! If this is your first time listening, welcome! YXE Underground is local, independent podcast here in Saskatoon that shines a light on people who are doing incredible things but are flying under the radar.I am so excited that this season, we will have the wonderful Lisa Greig on every month for 'Walking with Lisa' episodes. In the past few seasons, we've done several episodes focusing on mental health and they have become some of the most listened to episodes in the six seasons of the podcast. It got me thinking that it would be great if we could do quick mental health check in every month and luckily Lisa said yes to this pitch. Lisa Greig is a mother of two young children, a social worker who today works at the University of Saskatchewan, the author of a best selling children's book entitled 'Scream! Arielle Jacobs joins The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul to discuss approaching her new Broadway show "Here Lies Love" with empathy, acts of kindness on Broadway and much more. Arielle Jacobs has been lighting up the stage since she studied ballet at the age of three. She went on to star in Broadway blockbusters, playing Princess Jasmine in Disney's “Aladdin”, Nessarose in “Wicked”, and Nina Rosario in “In the Heights” alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda. More recently she dazzled Off-Broadway in “Between The Lines.” Now, Jacobs channels Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos in the aforementioned show "Here Lies Love." The immersive disco pop musical has transformed the Broadway Theatre into a dance club where actors perform amongst audiences. Most importantly, when not performing, Arielle gives back: supporting her company “The Broadway Pup”, which sells punny Broadway-themed pet bandanas and donates 100% of profits to animal rescue charities. Kevin Spacey Testifies Father Was “Homophobic Neo-Nazi” During his sexual misconduct trial, Kevin Spacey testified that his father was a homophobic Neo-Nazi. On Monday, Kevin Spacey testified in a New York courtroom to refute allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp that the Oscar winner made a sexual pass at him when they were both 14 years old. When confronted about Rapp's allegations that a 26-year-old Spacey picked him up like a groom would a bride after a party in 1986, the actor responded by calling himself "Kevin Spacey Fowler." Rapp said earlier in the trial that during the fully clothed encounter, he wriggled out from under Spacey and tried to run out of the flat, but Spacey followed him and asked if he was sure he wanted to leave. "They are not real," Spacey remarked of the claims. Then, he was questioned if, throughout his professional existence, he had been secretive about his personal life. "My loathing of bigotry and intolerance began" at that point, he claimed. According to Spacey, having friends over was "humiliating and terrifying" since he never knew what his father would say to them or to him. I couldn't tell anyone a word about what was going on inside that house. There was never a single conversation about it between us. I've never discussed this in open conversation before," he admitted. When asked about his interest in the theater, Spacey revealed that his father "used to rage at me at the possibility that I might be gay." Two hours after Rapp's attorneys ended their presentation of evidence, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan dismissed a claim of intentional infliction of mental distress, and Spacey took the stand to testify. According to Kaplan, Rapp's allegations of abuse and battery are repeated here. It was argued by Spacey's legal team that Rapp's lawyers couldn't substantiate their client's allegations, hence the lawsuit should be thrown out. Kaplan ruled that Rapp, a 50-year-old regular on "Star Trek: Discovery," can move through with his assault and battery charges in court. The Broadway production of "Rent" featured him as an original cast member. Oscar winner and "House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey, 63, saw his career cut short by allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp and others in 2017. When Rapp and Spacey first met in 1986, he was in "Precious Sons" at the Broadway Theatre. Before entering its third week on Monday, the trial has already heard testimony from Rapp over the course of several days. Unless a victim comes forward publicly, like Rapp has, the Associated Press does not typically identify those who make such allegations. 2 A missing Texas mother's body was located in Nebraska following a high-speed automobile chase with her son. On Sunday, following a high-speed police chase with the missing mother's son, the body of the mother was discovered in the trunk of the automobile. On October 13, the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas received a complaint of a missing teen named Tyler Roenz and his mother named Michelle. The pair's last known location is the 14700 block of Birch Arbor Court in Humble, Texas, around 11:40 a.m. The Harris County Sheriff's Office reportedly contacted Nebraska State Police on Friday, October 14, after receiving information that a vehicle they believed was connected in a killing was in the state at the time. Minutes after getting the call, the Nebraska State Police spotted the Roenzs' Mazda 3 heading west on Interstate 80. The Mazda apparently sped away from a traffic stop made by state police, prompting the officers to give chase. At "speeds in excess of 110 miles per hour," the Mazda apparently kept going down the road. Somewhere around mile 9, the vehicle apparently collided with a semitruck, careened off the road, and crashed into a tree. According to reports, upon arrival, troopers discovered the driver suffering from "severe" injuries. Furthermore, they found a woman's body in the car's trunk. Tyler Roenz, the driver, was sent to a local hospital for treatment. The victim in the trunk was confirmed to be Michelle Roenz on October 15 by the Nebraska State Police. For "ongoing treatment of injuries received when he crashed his vehicle," Tyler was moved from a local hospital to another in Omaha. 3 An Alabama doctor has been accused of promising to be a "sugar daddy" to a minor patient and engaging in sex trafficking. A 59-year-old physician is in jail after being accused of sex trafficking a 17-year-old patient. On October 4, the teen patient saw Dr. Janaki Earla, and the Birmingham Real-Time News reports that when listening to her heart, he accidentally placed the stethoscope on her breasts. Earla allegedly complemented the adolescent on her beauty and hair after the checkup, then asked for her number. The victim claims he texted her thereafter, saying, "You may text me whenever you feel like it." On Oct. 5, Earla sent the adolescent a text message inquiring about her mood and stating, "If you agree not to tell anyone, I'll be very grateful. Please don't take this the wrong way "What's going on in Birmingham right now, according to the Birmingham Real-Time News. Reports further indicate that he said, "Let's keep this between ourselves and I swear I won't tell anybody. Your parents have my utmost respect, but we need to keep this between the two of us." According to the Birmingham Real-Time News, the mother reported the event to the police on October 5 and gave them her daughter's mobile to investigate. According to the article, an undercover investigator from the FBI's Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force pretended to be the teen and carried on their conversation with the doctor. The undercover investigator claims that Earla texted him an explanation of the term "Sugar Daddy," which stated, "an older man who supports/provides for a younger woman (ex: financially) in return for companionship and/or sexual favors." In response, the operative in disguise allegedly wrote: "So are you my Suggar daddy?" in which Earla chimed in, "Yes. That's all I can say, sweetie." The undercover agent reportedly continued the conversation by asking Earla what he wanted to do to her, to which Earla allegedly responded, "Please take me and use me as you see fit. Take care of me like a lover would." The doctor "took a risk" by asking the adolescent to be his sugar baby, and he described himself as a "middle-aged unhappy man," as reported by the Birmingham Real-Time News. Earla reportedly asked to meet the teen victim, and they agreed to do so at a Days Inn in Oneonta. According to the Birmingham Real-Time News, on October 11 Earla visited the Days Inn with a box of condoms, Hpnotiq, José Cuervo, Jagermeister, a 12-pack of White Claw, and $386 in cash, all with the intention of giving the teenage girl $50. According to reports, police enforcement was waiting for Earla when he arrived, and he confessed to the crime right away. According to WBRC-TV, Earla was charged with first-degree human trafficking of a juvenile, and officials are still searching for additional potential victims. Jail records say he is still being held in the Blount County facility.
