Dr. Larry Arnn, president of Hillsdale college, accepts the Heartland Liberty Prize at The Heartland Institute's 40th Anniversary Benefit Dinner at the Hilton Chicago on September 13, 2024.The very definition of a liberty society, Dr. Arnn said, is for people to choose how to live their lives and organize in the ways they see fit. The growth of the size and power of government — especially the federal government — makes that increasingly difficult in modern America. So-called independent federal agencies keep growing and keep making laws without the consent of the governed.Elections in the United States are manipulated now in ways we have never seen, and even beyond any other Western nation. The Heartland Institute is important because it stands up for the people. And the people are losing control of their government, and government is the most dangerous earthy power.Dr. Arnn also talked about how COVID lockdown policies threatened to shut down Hillsdale College. And since those at Hillsdale know something about the Constitution, they fought back — against a Michigan governor forbid the selling of garden equipment, but permit seeds; permit canoeing and forbid power-boating. The shutdowns were illegal, so Dr. Arnn said: "OK. We're Americans. We will not obey."Dr. Arnn closed his speech with: "I believe, having studied it all my life, that we may be losing control of our government. We may live in a despotism. If we do, we can be the ones — Heartland, each of you — we can leave a record, so in the future, when it comes, someone can look back and say, 'You know, they knew it was wrong, even then. And that is a service to our country."

Our guest this week is a highly creative and service oriented design leader who loves learning from others. She's a trailblazer who worked to carve out a space in the industry to truly be herself. Joining the show this week is Managing Principal at KNA Design Los Angeles, Alisa Chodos!Alisa sits down with Dan Ryan for a discussion on her hospitality journey. She dives into the importance of learning from others, why it's ok to make mistakes, and the warmth of the hospitality community. Takeaways:  Hospitality is the business of service, and design is theater. Hospitality is the backdrop through which people create connections and experiences. To properly execute requires a blend of design and management.  In the ever-evolving world of design consulting, learning goes beyond the classroom. It's about gaining firsthand experience, adapting to different environments, and embracing teamwork as the cornerstone of success. While the hospitality industry has come a long way, it has faced many diversity issues. When Alisa first started, not many women were involved in the design process. She continued to push on, and refused to conform. It is important to learn from mistakes, have fun, and collaborate with others to spur creativity. Embracing new perspectives and exploring unconventional ideas can lead to better solutions and promote camaraderie and teamwork. Working with a diverse group of people can provide new perspectives and inspiration. Emphasizing the importance of incorporating cultural and historical references in design projects can lead to cohesive and relevant outcomes. Designers should prioritize maintaining a positive and enthusiastic mindset towards their work to cultivate motivation and creativity. Embracing feelings of exuberance and discovery can lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction. The hospitality industry thrives on strong relationships and collaboration. The support, generosity, and professionalism of its people make it a fortunate and rewarding field to be a part of. Speaking about what makes the AMUG Conference a must-attend event in the AM calendar, Mark said: "AMUG is a jewel of the additive manufacturing community, and when I say the word jewel, I think of the many facets on a jewel. So, there's lots of things that make it special and make it unique. We have a technical exchange of knowledge, we do presentations, and we do hands-on training. It's not just maintenance of machines but it's also hands-on training for applications. I don't know of many other shows and places you can go and pour a casting that was made from a 3D printed mould."

It was a fascinating meeting of about 15 practitioners, 15 researchers and a handful of government representatives from agencies such as EPA, HUD and CDC. It was designed to allow practitioners to let researchers know what we need from research to do a better job helping people live in better indoor environments. This workshop focused on the Microbiome of the Built Environment and included a lot of discussion on mold and water damage topics. Radio Joe will review the presentations by both researchers and practitioners to bring listeners up to speed on what was discussed. As always there was a huge expo hall with thousands of exhibitors and some excellent presentations at the Hilton Chicago.
