Les Canadiens des London Knights, en vert et jaune, reçoivent les Erie Otters, en blanc et bleu, venus de Pennsylvanie, aux États-Unis. Et jouer contre des Américains, ce n'est plus tout à fait anodin, expliquent ces deux fans. « Il y a longtemps, quand j'étais plus jeune, ce n'était pas très important. Mais maintenant, ça l'est devenu, surtout si le Canada joue contre les États-Unis. C'est devenu une affaire personnelle, en quelque sorte, à cause de la politique. Quand on entend Trump dire qu'il veut faire de nous le 51e État des États-Unis, évidemment, en tant que Canadien et souverainiste, ça ne passe pas », affirme le premier. « Oh oui, on veut les battre pour envoyer un message politique ! », réagit le second. On essaie de laisser le plus possible la politique en dehors du hockey... » Il faut dire que malgré les crispations politiques, le hockey reste aussi - et surtout - un espace de coopération entre les deux pays. La ligue junior de l'Ontario, l'OHL, compte trois franchises américaines. Et dans l'effectif des London Knights, deux jeunes joueurs viennent des États-Unis. Mais « c'est assez fluide. Ils viennent ici, ils vivent ici, ils sont logés chez l'habitant. Nous leur obtenons un visa étudiant pour qu'ils puissent venir jouer pour nous. C'est donc un bon arrangement, déclare Rick Steadman, l'un des entraîneurs des Knights. Et c'est la même chose dans l'autre sens : aux États-Unis, ils font venir des joueurs canadiens. Moi, par exemple, en tant que journaliste, j'y réfléchis à deux fois avant d'aller aux États-Unis parce que je me dis : est-ce que je veux vraiment me prendre la tête avec les gardes-frontières ? The London Knights and the Kitchener Rangers have completed a major trade. The Knights have sent captain Sam O'Reilly and defenceman Jared Woolley to Kitchener in exchange for defenceman Jacob Xu (Zoo), forward Kane Barch and 11 draft picks. Xu is 17 years old and is eligible for the 2026 NHL Entry Draft. Barch is the son of former Knight and current Niagara IceDogs head coach Krys Barch.
