Mandy Crater, executive director of HomeAid Georgia, joins host Carol Morgan on this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast episode, Crater discusses the HomeAid Georgia Essentials Drive and how home builders, trade partners and individuals can get involved. This year's drive expands beyond metro Atlanta to include Athens and midwest Georgia as well. “Most folks don't realize that the average age of a person experiencing homelessness, pretty much nationwide, is about nine years old,” said Crater. “That means there's a lot of babies in that mix too, and so about a little over 12,000 people on any given night are experiencing homelessness, and about 38% of those are moms and children of all ages.” HomeAid Georgia's 24th Annual Essentials Drive HomeAid Georgia has been closing the gap on statewide homelessness since 2001, working alongside local trade partners to provide housing for those in need. While its trade partners cover a lot of the residential needs of these individuals, there are items that mothers need that aren't covered by any state program, such as diapers, baby wipes and feminine hygiene products. The Essentials Drive is key to alleviating that financial burden by offering moms these household essentials free through local nonprofits. This year, HomeAid Georgia and its partners are collecting donations from April 1 to 30. Visit www.homeaidatlanta.org/essentials-drive to find a list of donation drop-off sites accepting donations of diapers and baby wipes from April 1 – April 30. Items that are collected need to be dropped off at the Greater Atlanta HBA on Wednesday, May 7. Volunteers will sort items at the HBA on Thursday, May 8. And items will be delivered to the service providers on May 9, just in time for Mother's Day! What items are needed? Wipes are always requested due to their versatility. From freshening up during a diaper change or cleaning sticky toddler fingers, wipes are the gift that keeps on giving! Crater also points out that diapers, especially Pull-Ups, are a hot commodity at the non-profits HomeAid works with. The Essentials Drive provides mothers with the basics, enabling them to feel stable and make informed choices that support not only their children but also themselves. Donations should be new and in original packaging: Diapers (All Sizes & Pull-Ups) Unscented Baby Wipes Feminine Hygiene Products Adult Diapers Monetary donations (click the Donate button on the website) If you can't make a physical donation, the Amazon and Target wish-lists are a great way to make a difference and ship directly to HomeAid Georgia. More Than “Just the Essentials” In addition to offering mothers a bundle of resources, the nonprofit partners that HomeAid Georgia works with counsel these women to find the "why” behind their homelessness and help them move forward from its grasp. From parenting classes to budgeting assistance, they provide more than just the essentials; they also offer a supportive system to help these women achieve their goals. Crater said, “They really get at the root of ‘What was the issue that caused you and your family, your baby, to experience homelessness, and how do we solve that issue?'” Get Involved in the Essentials Drive Want to get involved this year? Volunteers can reach out to HomeAid Georgia through its website to assist with sorting, drop-offs and more. Crater says that HomeAid often doesn't know what to expect until donations start arriving on May 7, so it's always better to have more hands available. “When you show up with a load of diapers at a nonprofit, they're so happy to have you, and they're just so excited, and they're smiling and it's a great feeling,” said Crater. “I've had volunteers tell me over and over again that the best part is that they get to really see the results of the drive and who they're helping.” HomeAid Georgia would like to thank its 2025 Essentials Drive partners: Academy Mortgage

“I Am Music,” the third studio album by American rapper Playboi Carti, dropped on March 14, 2025, through AWGE and Interscope Records, marking his first full-length release in over four years since the groundbreaking “Whole Lotta Red” in 2020. This 30-track opus, originally teased under the title “Narcissist” before evolving into “Music” and finally “I Am Music,” arrives after a torturous gestation period that tested the patience of Carti's fervent fanbase. Spanning 77 minutes, the album is a sprawling testament to his enigmatic persona, blending trap, punk, and experimental rap into a chaotic yet captivating sonic tapestry. Featuring an all-star lineup of collaborators—Travis Scott, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Future, Lil Uzi Vert, Skepta, Jhené Aiko, Ty Dolla Sign, and Young Thug—“I Am Music” showcases Carti's ability to command a cultural moment, even amidst a rollout plagued by delays, leaks, and unfulfilled promises. The album's production, helmed primarily by Ojivolta, Cardo, and F1lthy, with contributions from heavyweights like Kanye West, Metro Boomin, and Mike Dean, oscillates between glitchy synths, booming trap drums, and atmospheric flourishes. Tracks like “Evil J0rdan” and “HBA” (formerly “H00dByAir”), released as standalone singles in 2024, anchor the project with their hypnotic beats and Carti's signature vocal contortions—ranging from guttural growls to high-pitched shrieks. The inclusion of DJ Swamp Izzo's bombastic interludes ties the album to Atlanta's mixtape heritage, lending a gritty, street-level authenticity to its futuristic sound. Standouts like “Mojo Jojo,” with Kendrick Lamar's playful ad-libs, and “Rather Lie,” elevated by The Weeknd's silky croon, highlight the album's versatility, while “Like Weezy” nods to Lil Wayne—whose phrase “I Am Music” Carti borrows—with a Rich Kidz sample that bridges past and present.“I Am Music” is as much a vibe as it is a statement, reflecting Carti's evolution from SoundCloud darling to a generational pacesetter. Its rollout began in earnest with cryptic Instagram posts in December 2023, including the tagline “I am music” and Pharrell's co-sign, “Prepare.” What followed was a barrage of YouTube and Instagram exclusives—“2024,” “Backr00ms,” “All Red”—that fueled anticipation while frustrating fans with their streaming absence. Recorded in eclectic locales, including a Paris cave studio for three months, as Carti revealed in a 2023 Numéro Berlin interview, the album channels themes of love, sex, drugs, and personal turmoil, with hints of bipolar struggles and rehab musings teased in his 2022 XXL interview. Yet, lyrically, it leans more into braggadocio and hedonism than introspection, a choice that critics argue limits its depth.Reception has been polarized but largely positive, with Pitchfork calling it a “dizzying, vibes-driven flood,” and The Guardian praising Carti's “mystical vocal range.” Its 30-track length—bloated to some, a feast to others—mirrors the excess of his persona, though tracks like “OPM Babi” and “Twin Trim” (a Uzi solo cut) feel like filler. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, moving 298,000 units, cementing Carti's commercial clout. Still, its messy release—delayed from midnight to dawn on March 14 amid sample clearance woes—mirrors its unpolished edges, with some accusing Carti of coasting on aura over substance. Regardless, “I Am Music” reaffirms his dominance in the rage-rap lineage he pioneered, a chaotic masterpiece that thrives on its contradictions.

The audacity of achievement is beautifully illustrated in the story of LUAR's Raul Lopez, whose show has been one of the most anticipated at New York Fashion Week for several seasons and counting. Having discovered the power of stepping away when necessary, his process is one we can all learn from when it comes to fueling our own dreams and rediscovering our sense of purpose. The miseducation of humility can all too easily convince us that playing small does anyone favors—or even that it might make us better people. But Raul? He's not here to ask for permission. Whether it's one of his designs becoming a cultural phenomenon or the media spectacle surrounding his shows, the New York native has brought a newfound excitement to what has often been considered a somewhat staid schedule for the city's fashion week. Ahead of his next show, we sit down with the designer to learn how one might weave a world as wide-reaching as his, the irrelevance of things like social class, and to better understand the reality of a life where dreams come true. "I don't care who you are. I don't care if you're a celebrity. I don't care where you come from—if you're from the hood—I treat everyone the same. And I think you can see that at my show." - Raul Lopez Episode Highlights: A New York native of Dominican descent, Raul Lopez first came onto the fashion scene by launching the brand Hood by Air with Shayne Oliver in 2006 before going on to launch his own brand, LUAR, in 2011. After leaving HBA, Raul spent time living in the Dominican Republic while seeking to connect with his cultural roots beyond being part of the diaspora. Raul has always found sanctuary in visits to his grandmother's home, where she has an entire room set up as an altar. He still goes there before his shows every season to this day. Spirituality, rather than religion, remains one of the cornerstones of his creative process. Growing up in Brooklyn, Raul's creative inspirations have been drawn from an array of cultural reference points and figures, ranging from Hasidic Jews to the sex workers he often saw on the streets as a kid. Initially naming his brand LUAR as a strategic move to avoid preconceived notions associated with a Latino name, Raul eventually decided it was time to embrace being Raul—not just LUAR—leaning into the wealth of creativity and culture he grew up in rather than shying away from it. Culture is currency, and learning to live as your true, authentic self becomes currency. Raul has built his brand with this mindset. After spending too much time trying to prove himself—designing despite never having received a formal education—Raul realized he had become depressed and no longer wanted to be in fashion. During this time away, living in the Cayman Islands, he discovered the powerful force of self-love and returned with a renewed perspective. Raul views his brand as a platform—not just for himself but for others—seeing his designs as catalysts that help people discover their own truths. Encouraging his team to step away when needed, Raul emphasizes the importance of learning who you are, loving who you are, and letting go of the fear that taking a break means being forgotten. It is the “most wonderful time of the year,” and Behind the Lines is focusing on giving back. Section 6 of the Preamble to the Texas Rules of Disciplinary Conduct reminds us that “the provision of free legal services to those unable to pay reasonable fees is the moral obligation of each lawyer as well as the profession generally.” This episode focuses on some of the ways Houston lawyers have been taking that obligation seriously and giving back to people in the Houston area who need legal help. Segment One - Hon. David Hittner: "I Wouldn't Trade That One Trial"Hon. David Hittner, Senior U.S. District Court Judge, discusses a criminal pro bono case he had as a young lawyer, including how he went about preparing for a criminal case as a civil lawyer. He also addresses how this pro bono case played a role in his confirmation hearing when he was appointed to the federal bench. The file for the case, Texas vs. Lockett, was recently formally dedicated for public exhibition at the Historic Documents Room at the Harris County Courthouse. Segment Two - Maryam Ghaffar: "My Client Felt So Validated"Maryam Ghaffar, an associate at Beck Redden and the HYLA Pro Bono and Service Committee Chair, discusses a recent Hague Convention case in which she represented the mother of a two-year-old child whose father wanted the court to order that the child's habitual residence was in Ecuador, not the United States. Maryam was appointed to this pro bono case by the Court, and it was a very fast-paced case. Segment Three - Holiday Wellness Break: Finding the Joy(BTL Interviewer Rinku Ray)Melanie Bragg of Bragg Law PC, who is also the co-chair of HBA's Wellness Committee, author of "Defining Moments: Insights Into the Lawyer's Soul" and other books, and cheerful volunteer, leads listeners through a wellness exercise designed to help find joy and reduce stress during the holiday season. Segment Four - Amy Farish: "There's Always Support"Amy Farish, a partner at Yetter Coleman who is also the firm's pro bono coordinator, discusses a lengthy immigration case she and her team handled and encourages lawyers to try out pro bono service even if it's in an area outside of one's usual wheelhouse. Segment Five - Andrew Lehmann (HVL): "The Legal Issue Was Actually Really Simple"(BTL Interviewer Rachael Thompson)Andrew Lehmann, who runs HVL's weekly Veterans clinics at Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital, discusses the issues they typically see and how to volunteer, and he shares recent success stories from the clinic, including a tenant's rights case and Military Sexual Trauma claim. He notes that lawyers should not feel intimidated to volunteer at the clinic or even take a case because often the legal issues are simple and the Veterans just need someone to advocate for them using legal skills that almost every lawyer has. Growing up in Kent in southeast London, Mark Eacott was always a curious kid—inspired by his artist grandfather, who taught him how to sketch and draw, and his dad, who was a builder with a strong do-it-yourself skillset. Those influences, coupled with Eacott's creative mind, fostered his passion for design. He majored in architecture at the University of Bath, where he studied abroad as part of the Erasmus exchange program at TU Delft, a specialized architecture school in Holland. That was a life-changing experience for Eacott, ultimately leading to an internship at OMA in Rotterdam where he worked alongside Rem Koolhaas. (Eacott went on to earn his master's degree from the Royal College of Art in London.)His career took off from there, and he added a list of hospitality giants to his résumé including Soho House, Yoo, HBA, and SBE, before landing at Ennismore (the latter two companies were both acquired by Accor), where he's been the global vice president of design since 2019. Eacott's philosophy is centered around service and experience. He's unafraid to retool brands that need a facelift or to call upon nostalgia for reboots of industry gamechangers, like the refresh of the Delano in Miami. Now based in Dubai, Eacott shares lessons learned along his impressive journey and how a successful brand is rooted in emotion.Thank you for listening! As a non-profit organization with a charitable purpose of promoting the prevention and treatment of birth trauma, they strive to provide birth workers, obstetricians, midwives, and doulas with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for themselves and others, and to return birth to its rightful place as a profound rite of passage. Their mission is to support women on their journey to childbirth, ensuring that they receive safe and trauma-free birth services and support. They aim to raise awareness of the occurrence and consequences of birth trauma and provide women and birth workers with the tools and support they need to prepare for and experience a safe, positive birth.Advocacy groups such as Hygieia Health, Homebirth Australia, Maternity choices Australia, and us here at PBB Media to name a few, spend a considerable amount of time translating some of these deeply rooted political stirrings or changes in to smaller bite sized information segments so that we can all come together in our united aim to ensure optimal freedom of choice in childbirth, however that may look for you.You may have a relative, a friend, a neighbour who is interested to birth at home. You may know a midwifery student who has the aim to become a privately practicing midwife. Even if home birth is not on your radar, you may even just empathise with the right to choose a birth environment that feels safe and right. Advocacy groups do so much work, but lets not forget our own capacity to advocate for our fellow human beings, even if their choices look different to ours. The meaning of advocacy is ‘public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy'. We always welcome your feedback and thoughts. Leave us a review, rating, instagram comment or DM, or simply be in touch via email through hello@pbbmedia.org We have left some great links below in relation to information sources that Fi mentions throughout the interview. Thanks for tuning in ! @hygieiahealthltd@bumps_birth_and_beyond @homebirth_australia@bornathomefilmSurvey link: https://tr.ee/pENQCpTihh Excerpt from Hygieia Health Instagram regarding proposed changes:“You may have seen a video circulating yesterday where Senator @larissawaters asked the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer (CNMO) about proposed changes to insurance for homebirth during Senate Estimates - we'd like to thank Senator Waters for her questions. If you're wondering what this all means, please keep reading. We feel the collective anger, fear and in some cases hopelessness about this issue, understanding it's deeply rooted in the lived experiences of women and midwives who have had to fight for women's rights in childbirth for decades. What We Do Know: The Government will conduct a consultation process in the coming months, aiming to have details finalised by the end of the year. The proposed insurance would only be available for midwives providing homebirth care to women with 'low risk' pregnancies. This could mean that midwives might not be legally able to provide homebirth services to women outside this definition.Currently, the definition of ‘low risk' and who defines it is yet to be determined. However, comments made by the CNMO suggest it could exclude women with common risk factors such as previous c-section, high BMI, gestational diabetes, lack of social support and more. The CNMO also stated that if women deemed ‘high risk' still want a homebirth, they will need a consultation with an obstetrician to be told to give birth in a hospital. Our Goal: It's not too late to influence this process and protect the choice to homebirth as a right for all women. HBA has been promised a seat at the table and we are pushing for this to be a public consultation.Urgency: Women who will become pregnant from September onwards will be directly impacted, so we will reiterate the urgency of this throughout the consultation process.Your Feedback Matters: We've put together a survey as a first step to gather your feedback so we can head into the consultation process and represent the needs of our community. Who Should fill out the Survey: • Have you had a homebirth previously? • Are you planning a homebirth? • Are you a homebirth midwife?Take Action: Complete our survey (link above)
We start with some classic outtakes, including a hilarious debate on how to pronounce HbA1c. Is it Hab one c or HBA one c? We finally get there in the end, but not without a lot of laughs. Our outtakes also feature some classic banter about blood sugar levels, annoying family members, and the joys of dynamic mics. We even touch on the absurdity of calling your HbA1c anything other than your average. What's your average, bruv? Next, we dive into this week's listener story. It's a bit naughty, so if you're a child, maybe skip this one. Our anonymous listener shares their experience of starting an OnlyFans during lockdown. The story takes a hilarious turn when a subscriber mistakes their insulin pump for a new type of vibrator. The listener plays along, leading to some very funny misunderstandings. This episode is packed with laughs, relatable moments, and a reminder that we all deal with ignorance about our chronic condition. Episode 10: The Many Faces of MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) - Sharing the Stories Cynthia guided her family through MAID, twice. First with her husband in 2019 and then again with her father in 2023. She discovered writing when her husband was sick as a way to process her experience and has since encouraged others to do the same. She is the creator and Co-Author of the recently published book The Many Faces of MAID: What to Expect When Someone You Know Chooses Medical Assistance in Dying. In this episode Cynthia is joined by some of the Many Faces of MAiD authors as they share their stories, and why they believe sharing these stories is important for them, and for all of us, in better understanding MAiD and the impact it can have for individuals and the people who love them. About Cynthia: Cynthia Clark received her HBA from the University of Western Ontario and spent time working as a management consultant and in midstream oil and gas. She has lived and worked in several different countries, is a trained executive coach and seasoned advocate for many causes that she is passionate about. Cynthia is a very good communicator and has excellent interpersonal and networking skills. Cynthia guided her family through MAID in 2019 when her husband was diagnosed with brain cancer and again when her father chose MAID in 2023. About the Storytellers: Carole - Carole was stunned and devastated when her close friend Sue called to say that she desperately and urgently needed Carole's support. Her husband Dan had elected to have MAID, and this was a decision that was inconceivably traumatic for Sue. Dan's facial cancer treatment would be painful and result in such disfigurement that he felt he'd prefer to die with some semblance of dignity. Carole flew to their home, trying to grasp the complexities of this tragedy, to comfort both of her dear friends at the end of Dan's life. Carol will share about her feelings of Empathy (Chapter 2, pg 67) when she learned of Sue's husband's diagnosis. Dave - Dave and Annie had lived on a street aptly named Paradise Close for three blissful years when Annie, at 72, was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. At the same time, she lost her speech and her ability to eat, a condition that was strongly suspected to be Bulbar ALS. She became palliative right away. A hospice visitor told them about MAID, and the relief for both of them was palpable. They smiled, knowing that Annie would not have to die in pain. Dave was her primary caregiver for 20 months, a role he never wanted, but gratefully embraced. She managed the cancer, but a much deeper blow was her inability to talk to Dave. They'd been together, as the tightest unit imaginable, for 27 years when Annie decided she'd had enough. She had the most beautiful, peaceful death on their living room sofa in the presence of her two children and Dave, her loving husband. Dave will share his feelings of Relief (Chapter 5, pg 135) when his beloved Annie decided she was ready to die. Bobbie - Bobbie and Bob had been married for 28 active and healthy years when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. They lived their lives to the fullest for the next 23 years. After an isolating and demoralizing five-week stay in the hospital during COVID, Bob decided he wanted to go home and die on his own terms. Bobbie was with him, and their dog was by his side, as he looked out into their BC garden and said goodbye. Bobbie will share about her feelings of Sadness (Chapter 6, pg 174) the day Bob had MAID Cathy - Cathy and Gary were in their 70s and had been together for 28 years when he was diagnosed with an incurable lung cancer. What followed was Gary's gradual decline over the next year and a half, with Cathy taking care of him. They had agreed from the beginning that neither of them could tolerate his prolonged suffering and that MAID was the right choice. Gary decided to forgo treatment that might extend his life for a few months but would affect the quality of the time he had left. He died peacefully at home in Cambridge, ON, overlooking the beauty of the lake behind their house. Cathy will share about feeling Empty (Chapter 7, pg 199) in the days following Gary's death. Brittney - Brittney was in her mid-20's, living a relatively normal and quiet life when her mother was diagnosed with skin cancer in her jaw. Her mom had decided on MAID before going into her first surgery, ‘just in case things got bad.' Six years later, after numerous surgeries, appointments and treatments, the cancer returned for the third time and there was nothing more the doctors could do. Even though she couldn't speak, she made it clear that she was ready to move on to the other side, experience the next chapter, and more importantly, be pain free. Brittney will share about eventually finding peace (Chapter 9, pg 242) two years after her Mother's death. Unexpected traumatic events can alter the course of our future. It's up to us to make decisions on the path that we're about to take and move forward. On today's episode, I am sharing my personal personal story about seizing the moment, understanding that unexpected things happen, and it's what we do next as leaders that matters most.In 2008, I suffered a traumatic brain injury. My life was forever changed and I have come to appreciate the smallest acts of kindness. It is why I believe we need to make every moment count. Key Takeaways:As leaders, we have a choice. When faced with a challenge we can rise above it or let it consume us. I hope that you will feel inspired to know that rising above is within your reach.Finding Purpose:I found that when we are at the lowest point from an unexpected circumstance there is only upward momentum. Volunteer, find a cause that lights you up and take on experiential leadership roles. The Power of a Strong Community: I discovered through my leadership journey with the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association how vital surrounding ourselves with the right people, who level us up to be our best selves matters. Stepping into Leadership: “Do something that scares you every day”- Eleanor Roosevelt. Joining the HBA board and becoming President was a big leap forward. I learned by doing, and found lifelong friends. The journey is hard enough, don't go it alone. Find leaders you admire and connect with them. You will be surprised and delighted by the outcome.Lessons from the JourneyWhen life throws unexpected challenges our way, we can find the strength to pivot and embrace change. I would not have been able to rise to leadership, succeed in my career without having the right people around me. There is power in external advisors and sponsors. Surrounding yourself with supportive people can make all the difference. In my rise to leadership, the secret to real success is it takes hard work. You have to tap into your brave, embrace resilience, be persistent and find the courage to take on new roles, even when you're not sure you're ready."Only you can summon the courage to take a step forward to leadership. It is your courage that will empower you to persist when you are faced with a challenge.”-Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®"When you are faced with a choice, listen to the messages your heart is telling you, open yourself up to the possibilities, and embrace all that you are meant to be.”-Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®“The key to taking a new leadership role is to roll up your sleeves and put in the work. If you've been waiting for the right moment, I'm here to tell you there is no perfect moment- just do it." -Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®"One of the most important things we can do as a leader is to express gratitude. Be thankful to friends and colleagues and your team. Let them know they matter." -Natalie Benamou, Founder, HerCsuite®A Message of HopeThis personal story proves that even in the face of adversity, we can shape our future. By embracing unexpected change and staying resilient, we can overcome obstacles and make a difference. Feeling inspired? Executive Director Mandy Crater with HomeAid Atlanta joins the Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio podcast to discuss this year's Essentials Drive and how people can get more involved with the organization. Crater sits down with the President of Denim Marketing and Host Carol Morgan. Celebrating nine years with HomeAid Atlanta, Crater has an impressive and varied work history! She received a degree in Public Relations in her undergraduate program and then transitioned to the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (HBA). After moving around a little, she ended up working for the designed charity of the organization that continues to receive generous support from the HBA. Crater said, “I'm happy to be celebrating a milestone coming up. I'm not quite a decade, but pretty close!” A constant presence in the Atlanta market, HomeAid Atlanta has been impacting lives across the metro area for over 22 years. The organization's mission is to build new lives for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness through construction, community engagement and education. By partnering with friends in the building industry, HomeAid Atlanta receives discounts and donations for nonprofit housing service providers needing construction projects. Whether it's an organization helping veterans experiencing homelessness that needs maintenance or an eight-unit apartment building for mothers and children, HomeAid Atlanta aims to assist in any way it can. Crater said, “The builders themselves came up with it back in 1989 in Southern California [after] seeing the need and saying ‘what do we do? How do we solve this problem? Because it's our job to build houses.'” Around 23 years ago, the organization noticed that a lot of other businesses they partner with have mothers and children in need of necessities. There was also an additional need for volunteer opportunities. While many people may struggle to volunteer on project sites, anyone can donate diapers. The organization realized there was more to learn about the work they were completing. There was a need for a support system as well as revitalization. While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) exists to combat food insecurity, there is no system for essential items such as diapers and wipes. Every child costs around $80 for diapers, which is a lot to consider, along with lodging and food. Each year, before Mother's Day, HomeAid Atlanta collects as many diapers and wipes as possible to deliver to the organization's friends on the Friday before the holiday. Running now until April 31, HomeAid Atlanta is asking for donations of diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene products, and adult diapers. The organization also has registries on Target and Amazon under HomeAid Atlanta. All donations can be dropped off at any SouthState Bank location across metro Atlanta and any location listed on the Drop Off Map on the HomeAid Atlanta website. If you would like to host a drop-off spot, please get in touch with the HomeAid Atlanta team to be added to the map. Jeff's guest on the podcast today is Dan DeStefano. Dan and Jeff have been long-time friends and fellow custom home builders. Dan is co-owner of DeStefano Homes & Remodeling and West Chester Hardwood Flooring. He shares how he grew up in the industry and how he got started with the family business. They discuss how their friendship began over 20 years ago when they met while building in the Homearama show, and Jeff gave him the push to be involved in the Home Builders Association (HBA) and how both served on the board together. They both agree that so much was learned over the years by being involved in the HBA, learning from others in the industry, and being with other builders with diverse thoughts and ages. Fellow builders were able to help each other out; older generations guided the younger generation, teaching them leadership skills and motivating them to be with their peers/competitors and, forming friendships and having fun! Many stories were shared by both how their friendship grew over the years and how they would lean on each other for advice in times of struggle in both life and business. They have too many hilarious beer drinking stories they reference during the podcast.Dan shares with us how he is a man of faith and continues on his journey. His spiritual path began with his parents and grandparents. We need to be grateful for all the good stuff we have and, pray every day and be thankful. He inspired Jeff to find his faith journey with God, and they both agree it helps them get through some of life's challenges. Jeff will forever be grateful to Dan. When it comes to finding the right workplace, the environment matters much more than the work. This week, we're joined by a designer who understands firsthand the value of creating welcoming environments in both her workplaces and designs. Our guest this week is Lead Designer, Principal, and Founder of AJC Design, Alicia Cannon!Alicia joins Dan Ryan for a conversation on what being an entrepreneur in the hospitality industry is like. Alicia shares her tips for finding the right environment, what makes starting your own brand worth it, and the best ways to train new members.Takeaways: Hospitality is a blank canvas, allowing you to create intentional experiences for guests, providing idyllic escapes and reassuring comforts away from home. It is a gift that brings passion and fulfillment, making it a significant aspect of the industry. As a creative, it's important to understand the environments you do and don't want to be part of. While a certain company may offer great work opportunities, a misalignment of culture will ultimately be more detrimental to you. While going out on your own can be daunting, it opens the door to creative growth. With freedom to travel, you open your eyes to new styles and designs. By observing the work of others, you become a better designer for your clients. When training junior designers, it is important to guide them through the fundamentals of interior design, such as writing specifications and understanding the language of the field. When seeking internships, explore opportunities at different-sized firms to find a culture and environment that aligns with your goals. It's crucial to prioritize understanding the people you want to work with. Establishing a strong brand identity and prioritizing long-term relationships with clients are crucial for success as a business owner. Creating a family-oriented environment and fostering lasting connections can lead to significant growth and loyalty. It is crucial for new business owners to anticipate upcoming projects and maintain a steady stream of clients. Planning and preparation are key to ensure a consistent flow of work and avoid potential financial challenges. Our guest this week is a highly creative and service oriented design leader who loves learning from others. She's a trailblazer who worked to carve out a space in the industry to truly be herself. Joining the show this week is Managing Principal at KNA Design Los Angeles, Alisa Chodos!Alisa sits down with Dan Ryan for a discussion on her hospitality journey. She dives into the importance of learning from others, why it's ok to make mistakes, and the warmth of the hospitality community. Takeaways: Hospitality is the business of service, and design is theater. Hospitality is the backdrop through which people create connections and experiences. To properly execute requires a blend of design and management. In the ever-evolving world of design consulting, learning goes beyond the classroom. It's about gaining firsthand experience, adapting to different environments, and embracing teamwork as the cornerstone of success. While the hospitality industry has come a long way, it has faced many diversity issues. When Alisa first started, not many women were involved in the design process. She continued to push on, and refused to conform. It is important to learn from mistakes, have fun, and collaborate with others to spur creativity. Embracing new perspectives and exploring unconventional ideas can lead to better solutions and promote camaraderie and teamwork. Working with a diverse group of people can provide new perspectives and inspiration. Emphasizing the importance of incorporating cultural and historical references in design projects can lead to cohesive and relevant outcomes. Designers should prioritize maintaining a positive and enthusiastic mindset towards their work to cultivate motivation and creativity. Embracing feelings of exuberance and discovery can lead to increased productivity and job satisfaction. The hospitality industry thrives on strong relationships and collaboration. The support, generosity, and professionalism of its people make it a fortunate and rewarding field to be a part of.
