"Hinomaru Sumo follows the tradition of many other sports shonen anime and begins on a high note. However, by the halfway point, it becomes apparent that something is missing, which detracts from the series' initial excitement and quality." Without much other exposure to sumo in the U.S., it's no wonder that so many amateur sumo wrestlers got their first taste for the excitement of this ancient combat sport through their love of anime. In this episode we discuss Hinomaru Sumo, its plot and characters (this is your only spoiler warning), some interesting trivia on how it relates to ancient Japanese weaponry, and how its dramatically shonen portrayal hooked a new wave of sumo enthusiasts. We also share the Hinomaru-style kimarite submissions from our fans! New series where we talk about anime. We pick random shows and we give you our input on what we think about the show.
I got home three minutes after The Last Dance started, so I will instead edit this podcast with fury to...watch those episodes tomorrow after work. Here's two podcasts in a row for everyone! Chris (@gokuffy), Chris (@antoniuspius) and I talk about Kurosawa's first color movie, Dodeska'den! Then Ink (@AnimatedInk) and I talk about Hinomaru Sumo! Listen Show notes: 0:30 - Chris, Chris, and I talk about Dodeska'den! 48:01 - Ink and I talk about Hinomaru Sumo! 1:18:23 - Ink and I take questions! Next time is Dersu Uzala and Cross Manage!
We've done 70 episodes, and I have grown and learned so much about podcasting and editing in the interim, even starting up another podcast (where we're running out of ideas of things to talk about, so you should suggest us some titles over at @MangaInYourEars). Thank you for listening. So for our 70th! We celebrate Mifune's 100th. Chris (@gokuffy), Chris (@antoniuspius), and I discuss his final film with Kurosawa up first with Red Beard. Then, we talk about Mifune: The Last Samurai, a documentary Criterion threw on their website to celebrate the centennial. Also we recorded these two movies like a month or so apart, so we may have repeated things thinking it would just be in one session, so apologies in advance if so. For the sports section of the podcast, Helen (@WanderinDreamr) and I talk about Ngozi Ukazu's Check Please, a hockey webcomic. Listen Show notes: 0:30 - Chris, Chris. and I talk about Red Beard for the second time for us, but the first time for you! 43:34 - We talk about Mifune: The Last Samurai! 1:00:03 - Helen and I talk about Check Please! Next time is Dodes'ka-den and Hinomaru Sumo!

It's all about scores! In this episode, we finally used all the duct tape we have and successfully forced our sound editor to join us in our discussions about sports anime and terrible protagonists. And once again, we (not counting our sound editor) are not so nice about expressing our opinions on particular characters.----Some of the anime mentioned: Baki, Prince of Tennis, Hajime no Ippo, Hinomaru Sumo, Yowamushi Pedal, Haikyuu!!, Slam Dunk, Kuroko's Basketball, and Aldnoah.Zero...----[WARNING: Profanity. Profanity everywhere. We are also selfish and merciless creatures, our harsh opinions on certain topics and characters may be offensive to some.]----Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/awfully-anime-podcast/id1476896491Google Play: https://play.google.com/music/listen?u=0#/ps/Iw6tlh7ieksqorvrrh66xsezp2mPodbean: http://awfullyanimepodcast.podbean.comFacebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/402957763692476/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/awfullyanimepodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/AnimeAwfully
