Lucy Bryan talks about how Appalachia has influenced her and provided roots as she discusses her memoir of essays, “In Between Places”.  Lucy Bryan is a writer, adventurer, mother, teacher, and lover of alpenglow, fungi, tiny streams, tall trees, native wildflowers, campfires, homegrown vegetables, thunderstorms, and tents. She splits her time between Ohio's Appalachian Plateau and Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, where she teaches writing at James Madison University. Her award-winning essays have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and listed as 'notable' in Best American Essays. Homebound Publications published Bryan's first book, In Between Places: A Memoir in Essays, in June 2022. She is currently working on a novel set in Ohio's hill country about land and water, fracking waste, surrogacy, community, and the complicated business of putting down roots. Activism has taken Will to the Unist'ot'en Camp - an Indigenous cultural center and pipeline blockade on unceded Wet'suwet'en territory in so-called British Columbia, Canada, to a construction blockade on Mauna Kea in Hawai'i, and to endangered pinyon-juniper forests in the Great Basin. In the first segment, Host Tiokasin Ghosthorse welcomes returning guest Stephany Seay from the Buffalo Field Campaign. Stephany was born in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and raised in Virginia. She became aware of this culture’s capacity for mindless destruction as the beaches and forests she grew up in were destroyed by so-called development. Stephany has been an earth activist since the late 1980s, has apprenticed as a wildlife rehabilitator, and is a student of horses. She started following the work of the Buffalo Field Campaign in 1997. In January 2004, she moved to Montana and has been on the front lines with the Buffalo Field Campaign ever since. Stephany has been a member of Deep Green Resistance since 2015 and stands in solidarity with those—human and non-human—who want to bring an end to industrial civilization and the culture that is killing our planet. Stephany counts among her heroes, Derrick Jensen, John Trudell, and the co-founders of Buffalo Field Campaign Mike Mease and Rosalie Little Thunder. In the second segment, we have updates on the occupation of Thacker Pass in northern Nevada. In January, a group of activists, including our returning guests Max Wilbert and Will Falk, launched an occupation of a proposed mine at Thacker Pass. Lithium Americas corporation plans to rip open 5,000 acres of this land to extract lithium for consumer products. Max Wilbert is a writer, organizer and wilderness guide, and has been part of grassroots political work for nearly 20 years. He’s an author and his essays have been published many places, including CounterPunch and Dissident Voice. Poet Quinn Bailey always had a strong connection to the natural world, so much so that it's become his career. His new book, “The Currents Of The World,” collects a variety of poems shaped by witnessing, again and again, the power of nature. The poems have a pretty straightforward approach, but touch on a number of themes, such as the beauty of nature, the joy of dance, and trusting growth to happen in its time.   Quinn and I talk about the origins of the book and how he came to the attention of Homebound Publications. He looks back to how he first connected with nature and his favorite settings for writing his poems. We also talk about how he came to the decision to collect his poems and find a publisher to share them with the world.   To close out the interview, the author gives us a reading, sharing two poems—one from the book, along with a brand new one.

Author Caitlin Garvey's debut novel, “The Mourning Report,” looks at the passing of her mother and the subsequent battles she had with depression and being admitted to a psychiatric facility after a suicide attempt. In her book, she interviewed the people who were part of her mother's care, including a hospice nurse, a priest, an estate planner, a hairstylist, and a funeral director. If she figures out how they could function after being so close to her mother’s death, then maybe she can learn how to navigate her own life. Caitlyn shares some of the stories told in these interviews and what they meant to her, as well as what she thinks it means to “move on.” This book is scheduled to be released in print and electronic formats on Oct. 6 through Homebound Publications.

Leslie Browning is an award-winning author of twelve books. In her writing, she explores the confluence of the natural landscape and the interior landscape. In 2010, she debuted with a three-title contemplative poetry series. These three books went on to garner several accolades including a total of 3 pushcart-prize nominations, the Nautilus Gold Medal for Poetry, and Foreword Reviews’ Book of the Year Award. She has freelanced for several publications and has a biannual interview column in The Wayfarer Magazine in which she has interviewed dozens of notable creative figures such as Academy Award-Nominated filmmaker Tomm Moore, Peabody-winning host of On Being Krista Tippett and celebrated poet David Whyte. Balancing her passion for writing with her love of learning, Browning is a graduate of the University of London, a Fellow with the International League of Conservation Writers and sits on the Board of the Independent Book Publishers Association. In 2011, she opened Homebound Publications. She is currently working to complete an l.b.a. in Creative Writing at Harvard University’s Extension School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Leslie is joining us today to discuss her new book, To Lose the Madness: Field Notes on Trauma, Loss and Radical Authenticity. Unlike other books in her library, she wrote it with absolutely no intention of sharing it with others. This book, more than any other she has written, is meant aa conversation starter around a topic that’s important to her and society as a whole. Thus, even as a notoriously private person―she’s sharing the story of her most difficult moments with the world. In this week's episode I discuss miscarriage with Leslie and how her experience impacted both her mental health and her writing. We discuss stigma, coming out, and how the world needs more stories like hers to be told.
