Megan Mary is an award-winning international bestselling metaphysical author, dreamworker and host of the Women's Dream Enlightenment podcast. It's a perfect book for those who love fall, Halloween, and all things magic.   Hannah Skye heads to Maple Hollow when she learns her Aunt Jewelia, her last remaining relative, is missing. While there, she begins to recognize that her family has a lot of secrets - and these secrets have a direct impact on her.   Will she figure out what she is supposed to learn from the residents of Maple Hollow? Will she rightfully take her place in the family line? Will she be able to save her aunt from the dream haunters? More importantly, will she be able to save the world?   Megan creates a wonderful scene and cast of characters. Christine Fallert Kessides became a first-time novelist at age 70, when her young adult book, Magda, Standing, was published and received significant acclaim. Christine was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was interested in the fact that all her ancestors (those she could identify) were from Germany. After reviewing her family genealogy and reflecting on some of her relatives' experiences, she was inspired to write Magda's story.  About the novel Magda, Standing: When her father pulls her out of high school to care for her invalid mother and little brother, sixteen-year-old Magda is devastated—but the greater challenge is saving her family in the face of a war and pandemic.  Magda, Standing -- a YA (Young Adult) historical novel released June 2023 from Bold Story Press -- concerns a girl in a German immigrant family in Pittsburgh in 1916-19, confronting the impacts on her family of World War One and the Spanish flu.     The novel speaks to many themes that young people confront today: Balancing the demands of family and tradition with their own ambitions; seeking education despite financial obstacles; dealing with mental illness in a family member; feeling public resentment of immigrants; facing first-time independence from home; and confronting violence and death. Awards include: Gold medalist - 2024 Ben Franklin Award from Independent Book Publishers Association, IBPA - for Young Adult Audiobook Silver medalist - 2023 Story Circle Sarton's Book Award - Young Adult category Bronze medalist - 2023 MOONBEAM Children's Book Award - Young Adult Fiction: Historical/Cultural  Finalist for the 2023 international Eyelands Book Award for published Historical Fiction/Memoir  In this episode, we discuss themes in her book that touch on immigration to the U.S., the effect of pandemics and how the devastation of the Spanish Flu outsized the Covid-19 pandemic in fatalities, the critical importance of nurses, World War I, family and the challenges attendant to coming of age. Takeaways from Magda, Standing, include driving hard to pursue one's dreams and how we can survive almost anything with support, particularly from family. Christine attended college and graduate school at Northwestern University and Princeton University, respectively. She had a career writing policy reports for the World Bank on international development. In her spare time, she volunteers with nonprofits that support women and families and especially enjoys reading, travel, yoga and sharing books with friends. She lives outside Washington DC, in suburban Maryland with her husband, and sees their four children, two grandchildren, and four grand-dogs as often as possible. Christine currently is writing the sequel to Magda, Standing, as well as working on a children's picture book. She spoke about Magda, Standng at the historic Chautauqua Institution (live and on Zoom) in August. Which stories are left out of the history books? What's in the documents omitted from the “official” record? And what happens when we go in search of people's hidden lives? Today's book is  No Way, They Were Gay? Hidden Lives and Secret Loves (Zest Books, 2021), by Lee Wind, in which he reminds us that “history” was crafted by the people who recorded it. And sometimes, those historians were biased against, didn't see, or couldn't even imagine anyone different from themselves. That means that history has often left out the stories of LGBTQIA+ people: men who loved men, women who loved women, people who loved without regard to gender, and people who lived outside gender boundaries. Historians have even censored the lives and loves of some of the world's most famous people, from William Shakespeare and Pharaoh Hatshepsut to Cary Grant and Eleanor Roosevelt. Throughout the text, Lee Wind shares primary sources—poetry, memoir, news clippings, and images of ancient artwork—and explores the hidden (and often surprising) Queer lives and loves of two dozen historical figures. No Way, They Were Gay was honored as a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, and was selected for the Chicago Public Library's 2021 Best of the Best Books list. Our guest is: Lee Wind, who writes stories that center marginalized kids and teens and celebrate their power to change the world. Closeted until his 20s, Lee writes the books that would have changed his life as a young Gay kid. His Masters Degree from Harvard didn't include blueprints for a time machine to go back and tell these stories to himself, so Lee pays it forward with a popular blog with over 3 million page views (I'm Here. I'm Queer. What The Hell Do I Read?) and books for kids and teens. He is the author of No Way, They Were Gay? His day-job is for the Independent Book Publishers Association (as their Chief Content Officer), and for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (as their official blogger). Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, who holds a PhD in history, which she uses to explore what stories we tell and what happens to those we never tell. Are you hoping to sell your books to libraries? If so, trade reviews are a vital component to enticing libraries to buy your books, and librarians especially value Booklistreviews—the official trade publication of the American Library Association. So IBPA invited Booklist Editor and Publisher George Kendall as a guest on “Inside Independent Publishing (with IBPA)” to discuss how publishers can land a Booklist review; how they can best leverage their review; and much more.PARTICIPANTSGeorge Kendall began as Booklist's Editor & Publisher in 2019 and is now continuing in that role as well as serving as Interim Director of Publishing & Media at the American Library Association (ALA). When not overseeing Booklist business and editorial matters and managing ALA publishing, George might be reading the latest dark but enthralling apocalyptic or dystopian nail-biter, or, on a brighter side, he might be found hanging out with his young daughter, or enjoying his local library, perusing books, toys, and Playaways, or attending story time or “messy art” and “little learners” programs.  George received his MA in Literary Studies from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and studied with J.M. Coetzee, who later when on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (2003). George began his publishing career in scientific, technical, and medical publishing before moving on to his current role. Prior to publishing, George was a professional classical musician. There are seemingly endless guides to exploring the national parks: Moon, National Geographic, Lonely Planet, and various other corporate publishers. Indeed, it's rare these days that you find a writer who takes on the role of both guidebook author and publisher.  Most of these guidebooks take the same approach: a nice overview of the park in question, followed by a breakdown of places to stay, where to eat, things to do, nearby attractions. Mike Oswald is swimming against the current with his park guidebooks.  First he came out with “Your Guide to the National Parks,” a thick, hefty volume that has won awards from the Independent Book Publishers Association. Along with the usual park basics, he fills his chapters with history, maps that point out some of his favorite hikes and don't-miss attractions, some details on plants and animals, a suggested vacation planner, and of course, full-color photographs of some iconic settings.  Today we're sitting down with Mike to discuss not only his decision to “go independent against those giants in the guidebook publishing world," but also his latest park-related projects.
