Stephany Seay has been working in service to the last wild buffalo for over 20 years. Born in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and raised in Virginia, Stephany learned about the continued war against wild buffalo in 1996 and has been advocating for them ever since. In response to their struggle, she moved to Montana on New Year's Day 2004, where she became the media coordinator for Buffalo Field Campaign, with whom she parted ways after 18 years of service over philosophical differences. Stephany has nearly 20 years of experience standing with the buffalo, is an avid wildlife photographer, backcountry skier, and horsewoman. She is a member of Deep Green Resistance, and co-founder of Roam Free Nation. Marijuana - A Love Story - Dialogue with Derrick Jensen

Derrick Jensen's new book is called, Marijuana: A Love Story. It details his wild romance with this oft misunderstood plant teacher and medicine, and how the dream the Marijuana once offered people (a version of "the American Dream") became ruined by the corporatized capitalistic system. From the book description: "In state after state, the wealth-building capacity of this extraordinary plant is now concentrating into the control of the already rich. From seed to smoke, legalization is eroding the lives and livelihoods of the people it was supposed to help: the patients, growers, trimmers, "mules," and activists who created the colorful and committed culture that is now under threat. We can end the war on weed without turning it into a war on small family growers-but it will depend on how much pressure we are willing to apply to force law makers to serve local communities rather than corporate interests. Marijuana: A Love Story is a report from the front, a reminder of how and why we fell in love with this plant, a cautionary tale of corporate power, and a call to once more "Free the Sacred Herb."'Derrick Jensen is the author of more than twenty-five books, including Bright Green Lies, A Language Older Than Words, The Culture of Make Believe, and Endgame. He is also a teacher, activist, and small farmer, and was named the poet-philosopher of the ecological movement by Democracy Now! In 2008, he was chosen as one of Utne Reader's 50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World and won the Eric Hoffer Award. He is a cofounder of the organization Deep Green Resistance. Jensen has written for the New York Times Magazine, Audubon Magazine, and The Sun, and was a columnist at Orion Magazine. He holds an MFA in creative writing from Eastern Washington University and a BS degree in mineral engineering physics from the Colorado School of Mines, and has taught creative writing at Eastern Washington University and Pelican Bay State Prison. He lives in Northern California on a property frequented by bears.

In this episode of “First Voices Radio,” Tiokasin welcomes back Stephany Seay. Stephany was born in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and raised in Virginia. She became aware of this culture’s capacity for mindless destruction as the beaches and forests she grew up in were destroyed by so-called development. Stephany has been an earth activist since the late 1980s, has apprenticed as a wildlife rehabilitator, and is a student of horses. She started following the work of the Buffalo Field Campaign in 1997. In January 2004, she moved to Montana and has been on the front lines with the Buffalo Field Campaign ever since. Stephany has been a member of Deep Green Resistance since 2015 and stands in solidarity with those—human and non-human—who want to bring an end to industrial civilization and the culture that is killing our planet. In the second half: On May 7, 2020 an international online gathering and sharing of Indigenous knowledge and healing was held with Original Nations of the Western Hemisphere in light of the ancient prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor, which is of great impact and sometimes harsh reality with Mother Earth. This gathering was called the International Day of Blessing for Mother Earth, a call to action and international invitation to connect through and with Indigenous Elders and knowledge keepers with an intention to learn, grow, heal and return to Wotawacin Oṫokohe (completion of our blue energy). Claude Tokala Hocokan Waokiya Ob Mani Two Elk feels the urgency of our moment and has decided to do something about it. Animated by the knowledge of his ancestors and spiritual mentors and working closely with psychologist Dr. Jami Bartgis (Cherokee Nation), Tokala is on a global mission to heal us all and our planet of our collective traumas. Tokala and Jami, with partners from North, Central and South America, have started a network of international collaborators and volunteers dedicated to integrally improving health, well-being, and equity for Indigenous peoples of the Americas. By supporting Indigenous interventions across borders, through prayer, activism, art, education, and outreach, they are working toward the unity of the people and for everyone’s return to a healthful self and a healthy environment. This pandemic and its message to the planet has underscored the urgency of their work and they are gathering to offer blessings for the healing of our Mother (Earth) and her people. We hear first from the Wicasa Wakan Richard Moves Camp of the Oglala Lakota in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and then we will move to the southern continent to Ecuador and the Quiche Elder Angel Tipan Santillan.“First Voices Radio” would like to thank Claude Two Elk and JJ Lind for making the audio of Elders available, and to the interpreters, editors and Supporting Partners: Immediate Medium Indigenous Ways, Emily Johnson/Catalyst, International Indian Treaty Conference, InnerCHANGE WORKS, Collapsable Hole (USA), One Fire Associates, LLC (USA), and Oklahoma Health Sciences Center."Production Credits:Tiokasin Ghosthorse (Lakota), Host and Executive ProducerLiz Hill (Red Lake Ojibwe), ProducerTiokasin Ghosthorse, Studio Engineer and Audio Editor, WIOX 91.3 FM, Roxbury, NYMusic Selections:1. On This Green Earth , Max Wilbert, who co-authored the new book, Bright Green Lies - How the Environmental Movement Lost Its Way and What We Can Do About It, comes on to share his viewpoint surrounding our unwillingness as a society to sacrifice any of our consumptive behaviors. The book explores the rift between two types of environmentalists. The first being the "deep greens", who want to protect the Earth by cutting back on consumption and restoring natural landscapes, and the "bright greens", who believe that improved technology in the form of solar, wind, and battery storage are all we need to roll back climate change, all without changing our consumptive behaviors.

This week we are re-airing a conversation that Bursts had last year with Aric McBay, who is an anarchist, organizer, farmer, and author about his most recent book called Full Spectrum Resistance published by Seven Stories Press in May 2019. This book is divided into 2 volumes, and from the books website [fullspectrumresistance.org]: “Volume 1: Building movements and fighting to win, explores how movements approach political struggle, recruit members, and structure themselves to get things done and be safe. Volume 2: Actions and strategies for change, lays out how movements develop critical capacities (from intelligence to logistics), and how they plan and carry out successful actions and campaigns.” This interview covers a lot of ground, with topics that could be of use to folks newer to movement and ones who have been struggling and building for a while. McBay also talks at length about the somewhat infamous formation Deep Green Resistance, some of its history, and tendencies within that group that led him to break with them. Well the good news is that Earth Overshoot Day arrived later this year on August the 22nd than it did in 2019 (July the 29th). The bad news is that this is due to COVID, not because of concerted effort on part of the dominant economic paradigm. Earth Overshoot Day is always a sobering, soul-searching time for host Michael Bayliss, so what better way to go about it than to soul-search with one of the most thoughtful and articulate environmentalist and authors of our time, Derrick Jensen? You may remember Derrick Jensen (https://derrickjensen.org/) from such best-selling books as Endgame (https://derrickjensen.org/endgame/) and The Culture of Make Believe (https://derrickjensen.org/culture-of-make-believe/). Or you may be aware of him as the co-founder of Deep Green Resistance (https://deepgreenresistance.org/en/) radical environmental group. Derrick is hailed as the philosopher poet of the ecological movement. He pulls no punches when it comes to being a champion of the natural world, pointing the finger of scrutiny at the modern human capitalist experiment and reminding us that yes, limits to growth are DEFINITELY real. In other words, he fits in just perfectly with Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP). I can't say we keep things shallow during the interview. Derrick goes down the rabbit hole with me as he dissects capitalism, the psychology that creates an expansionist, destructive mind-set, the trauma that is inflicted on both human and human animals as a result of a civilization built around competition and domination and, not least, the role that (non patriarchal/monotheist) spirituality plays in reconnecting us back into the awe and one-ness with nature. Although the interview is slightly longer than some other episodes, I feel I barely brushed the surface with Derrick and can't wait to have him back for 'round two pithy conversation’ soon! Before the interview host Michael Bayliss provides a ruefully amusing anecdote of trying to explain Earth Overshoot Day (https://www.footprintnetwork.org/our-work/earth-overshoot-day/) to the mainstream news media last year. I honestly thought I was buttering up our predicament for the interviewers in the best way that I could, but they still felt I was being too pessimistic when I tried to explain that the work to be done involved more than just recycling. I had almost forgotten the cognitive blind spot that is mainstream news! To cap it off, we play the brand new track ‘Ice’ from 'Counting Backwards (https://countingbackwards.bandcamp.com/track/ice)' . It is a track about modern life malaise in the suburbs. Take this lyric below which links in nicely to some of the conversation had with Derrick Jensen: "People don’t know how to be happy in the sprawl. It's a monochrome world she says. Flanked by urban malls." Stick around for episode six when I interview Robert Wanalo from Post Growth Institute. In the meantime, you may be interested in the Earth Overshoot Day media release (http://www.population.org.au/earth-overshoot-day-retreats-three-weeks-wrong-reason) freshly released by Sustainable Population Australia (SPA). In this episode, I am honored to speak with Derrick Jensen. Derrick is a long time environmental activist, writer and philosopher. He has authored dozens of books and essays and is known in the environmental and conservation movement as one of the great movers and shakers of our time. Derrick challenges us to see the bigger picture, question authority and seek new ways of living with ourselves and the planet. We talk about Derrick’s background, his history as an activist, the gaps he discovered in the environmental discourse, our cultural hate of nature, the epistemology of science, how we perceive the natural world, reverting to hunter gatherer societies, the fact that we are in overshoot, the fundamental roles of natural communities, the problem with agriculture, the troubles with talk of sustainability without addressing psychopathy and power, the responsibility of participating in the predator pray relationship, Jevons Paradox, the ridiculous notion that renewable energy will save us, the hypocrisy of the green new deal, the collapse of civilization, why it’s still worth fighting for a future and living with dignity moving forward into terrifying and uncertain times. Our culture is a life-destroying force on this planet. What is to be done in the face of the reality industrial civilization is forging on the living planet we all share? Max Wilbert and I discuss this question within the context of Max's years of work discussing and raising awareness of the large-scale ecological crisis currently unfolding on this living planet under the global system and logic of capitalist industry and Empire (under the guise of “economic prosperity” and “development”). Max has spent years organizing, educating, and actively fomenting practical and diverse forms of resistance against the structures (infrastructure) of industrial civilization, and we discuss what forms of resistance are required to effectively dismantle industrial civilization and culture. Max Wilbert is a third-generation organizer, photographer, and co-founder of Deep Green Resistance. Max is the author of ‘We Choose To Speak’ — a collection of essays written between 2013 to 2018, in which Max “make[s] the case for a revolutionary environmentalism that aims to forcefully dismantle the global culture of empire.”☨ Our culture is a life-destroying force on this planet. We delve into Max’s years of work of organizing, educating, and actively fomenting practical and diverse forms of resistance against the structures (infrastructure) of industrial civilization, as well as what forms of resistance are required of us to effectively dismantle this industrial civilization and culture. Along with these subjects, this conversation includes an exploration into the structure and evolution of civilization over human history, anticipating the collapse of industrial civilization and fitting the reality of collapse within the broader struggle against industrial civilization, as well as keeping “your head above the tide” and always keeping the bigger picture of our collective predicament in mind when organizing for this kind of resistance. Max Wilbert is a third-generation organizer who grew up in Seattle’s post-WTO anti-globalization and undoing racism movement. Max has a 15-year history as an organizer and revolutionary. He is a co-founder of Deep Green Resistance and longtime board member of a small, grassroots environmental non-profit with no employees and no corporate funding. His first book ‘We Choose To Speak,’ a collection of pro-feminist and environmental essays written over a six-year period, was released in 2018. He is also the co-author of the forthcoming book ‘Bright Green Lies,’ which looks at the problems with mainstream so-called “solutions” such as solar panels, electric cars, recycling, and green cities. The book makes the case that these approaches fail to protect the planet and aim at protecting empire from the effects of peak oil and ecological collapse.⚐ ☨ http://bit.ly/MaxWilbert ⚐ http://bit.ly/MWabout Episode Notes: - Learn everything you need to know about Max and his work at his website: https://www.maxwilbert.org - Purchase ‘We Choose To Speak’ from Max directly at his website [http://bit.ly/2MkkVuu] or on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2ncX5WH - Max posts videos discussing the subjects we go over in this episode regularly on his YouTube channel: http://bit.ly/MaxWvideo - Check out Max’s amazing photography here: http://bit.ly/MaxPhoto - Follow Max on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MaxWilbert - The song featured in this episode is “Prayer” by Adam Ben Ezra from the album Can’t Stop Running. - WEBSITE: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com - SUPPORT THIS PROJECT: Patreon: http://bit.ly/LBWPATREON Donation: http://bit.ly/LBWKOFI - FOLLOW & LISTEN: SoundCloud: http://bit.ly/LBWSOUNDCLOUD iTunes: http://bit.ly/LBWITUNES Google Play: http://bit.ly/LBWGOOGLE Stitcher: http://bit.ly/LBWSTITCHER RadioPublic: http://bit.ly/LBWRADIOPUB YouTube: http://bit.ly/LBWYOUTUBE - SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook: http://bit.ly/LBWFACEBOOK Twitter: http://bit.ly/LBWTWITTER Instagram: http://bit.ly/LBWINSTA

Her book The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability has been called “the most important ecological book of this generation.” The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability We’ve been told that a vegetarian diet can feed the hungry, honor the animals, and save the planet. But, is it true? Lierre Keith believed in that plant-based diet and spent twenty years as a vegan. But in The Vegetarian Myth, she argues that we’ve been led astray—not by our longings for a just and sustainable world, but by our ignorance. The truth is that agriculture is a relentless assault against the planet, and more of the same won’t save us. In service to annual grains, humans have devastated prairies and forests, driven countless species extinct, altered the climate, and destroyed the topsoil—the basis of life itself. Keith argues that if we are to save this planet, our food must be an act of profound and abiding repair: it must come from inside living communities, not be imposed across them. Part memoir, part nutritional primer, and part political manifesto, The Vegetarian Myth will challenge everything you thought you knew about food politics. Lierre's New Book Deep Green Resistance starts where the environmental movement leaves off: industrial civilization is incompatible with life. Technology can't fix it, and shopping—no matter how green—won’t stop it. To save this planet, we need a serious resistance movement that can bring down the industrial economy. Deep Green Resistance evaluates strategic options for resistance, from nonviolence to guerrilla warfare, and the conditions required for those options to be successful. It provides an exploration of organizational structures, recruitment, security, and target selection for both aboveground and underground action. Deep Green Resistance also discusses a culture of resistance and the crucial support role that it can play. Deep Green Resistance is a plan of action for anyone determined to fight for this planet—and win.
