Ema Ryan Yamazaki attended Japanese elementary school, then an international school before heading to New York for her college education.  In “Instruments of a Beating Heart”, her Academy Award Nominated short, edited down from her feature “The Making of a Japanese”, she reveals some of the differences she found between national pedagogies, and some of the key learnings which have made her who she is.   Told through the efforts of 1st-grader Ayame to pass the audition to play the cymbal, an important part of the percussive ensemble at the heart of Ode to Joy, Yamazaki's film reveals the impact that the interplay of individuation and acculturation has on this exuberant, expressive girl.  And she paints the outlines of how she is being brought into a society that values collective harmony.   “Instruments of a Beating Heart” can be seen on The New York Times website and Youtube.   Hidden Gem:  Puffling   Follow: @emaexplorations on Instagram and X @topdocspod on Instagram and X    The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.

Can a movie be better than the story it's based on? Let's take a journey from short story to Academy Award Nominated film, today on The Classic Tales Podcast. Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast. Thank you for listening.  The Vintage Episode for the week is “The Bottle Imp”, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Please go to http://classictalesaudiobooks.com and become a monthly supporter today.  Classic Tales for Children: Volume 1 is now available. It includes the new recording of Pollyanna, bundled together with Winnie-the-Pooh, The Wind in the Willows, and Alice in Wonderland. I thought of titles that would really go well together, so I pulled out all the stops. This anthology is perfect to listen to again and again. You can pick it up at classictalesaudiobooks.com by following the link in the show notes.  https://store.classictalesaudiobooks.com/classic-tales-for-children-volume-1-p366.aspx Ok, off the top of your head, what movies are better than the books they are based on? Whenever I consider this, I tend to come back to The Wizard of Oz and Ben-Hur. I think in these two instances especially, they expanded on the original material beautifully, to fit the medium of film. It's a transformative process, to move from story told only in print, to a story told by actors, artists, costumers, directors, set designers, stunt people, special effects artists, and all the other hundreds of people it takes to make a motion picture. I recently discovered I'm going to have to add the film Meet John Doe to my list.  Meet John Doe is a film released in 1941, directed by Frank Capra. It stars Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyk and Edward Arnold. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Story, and it was ranked No. 49 in the American Film Institutes 100 years, 100 cheers list. It entered the public domain in 1969, and you can watch it for free many places on the internet, also on Amazon Prime. The film is based on the story “A Reputation”, by Richard Connell. Connell also wrote “A Friend of Napoleon” that we've heard recently, and is most famous for his short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”.  So first, let's hear the story “A Reputation”, and then look at what elements were modified and expanded on to create the acclaimed motion picture, Meet John Doe. Just a heads up – this story deals with suicide. And now, “A Reputation”, by Richard Connell. No news brief this week rather a focus on the Tribeca Film Festival. Melissa highlights some of the fantastic women-made films selected for the festival. She also interviews Jennifer Esposito, writer/director/actor of FRESH KILLS and Academy Award®-nominated director Waad al-Kateab (WE DARE TO DREAM). The daughters of the Larusso family struggle to break the unspoken code of the women behind the men in the mob world of Staten Island in the late '80s and early '90s. Unlike any mob movie you've ever seen before, FRESH KILLS reveals the women behind the men. The stories never told. Violence, fear, and unspoken rules dictate who they are and who they are allowed to become.  "Fresh Kills is less about the mafia world and more about the journey of the women in it. It explores the issues of wanting more than you were allotted in life. A theme almost everyone can relate to. It looks at unspoken rules in our society and then seeing if we have the courage to break them for ourselves and for the generation to follow.” Jennifer Esposito  WE DARE TO DREAM: We Dare to Dream is the story of refugee athletes from Iran, Syria, South Sudan and Cameroon who swim, run and fight their way to opportunity and safety in host nations across the world. Spanning a breadth of backgrounds, personal stories and Olympic sports, the film reveals the lives and hopes of refugee athletes training to compete on the world stage, showing the fire and the drive of young people forced to leave their families, homes and countries of birth to build new lives out of nothing. Directed by Academy Award®-nominated director  Waad al-Kateab (For Sama) and produced by Academy Award® winner Joanna Natasegara (The White Helmets, Virunga, The Edge of Democracy) and Emmy-winning producer Abigail Anketell-Jones (The Edge of Democracy, The Nightcrawlers) of Violet Films, two time Academy Award®-nominated producer, Bryn Mooser (Body Team 12, Lifeboat) and Kathryn Everett of XTR Studios and Joe Gebbia of Gebbia Productions, We Dare to Dream tells the amazing stories of young refugee athletes aiming to compete in the Tokyo Olympics. The film features refugee athletes Anjelina Nadai Lohalith, Cyrille Tchatchet II, Kimia Alizadeh, Saeid Fazloula and Wael Fawaz Al-Farraj.  This is their story of resilience and inspiration, hardship and loss, hope and home. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has joined Netflix's live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War,” marking another attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen. Spaihts, who is best known for his work on “Dune” and “Doctor Strange,” will adapt one of gaming's richest and most acclaimed video game sagas with over 40 million copies sold. The “Gears of War” franchise centers on a society divided and on the brink of collapse, facing total extinction by the monstrous Locust alien race. The ragtag Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, is charged with leading humanity's last stand. Netflix's partnership with The Coalition aims to first adapt the game into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow. Spaihts is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves “Gears of War,” according to The Coalition. Previous attempts to adapt the game have been unsuccessful. Universal hired F. Scott Frazier to write an adaptation in 2018, but no other moves were made on that project. With Netflix's hiring of Spaihts, “Gears of War” fans have much to look forward to given the screenwriter's wealth of experience adapting major genre IP. Source: Variety

Her debut novel is City Under One Roof, described as “Alice in Wonderland meets Fargo,” and, “The ultimate locked room mystery, [the novel] drops readers into an isolated, snowy town and is perfect for fans of Twin Peaks, Mare of Easttown, and Broadchurch.” A Publishers Weekly starred review noted, “Unusual topography plays a major role in screenwriter Yamashita's atmospherically charged debut….This distinctively original perspective on a ‘community of stragglers, oddballs, and recluses' heralds the arrival of a major new talent.” #1 New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box called the book, “A compulsive page-turner that's both atmospheric and claustrophobic at the same time.” Iris continues to work in Hollywood, developing for both film and streaming media. She has taught screenwriting at UCLA and the American Film Institute. We're doing a fantasy style draft of the Academy Award nominated films trying to grab the movies that will win the most awards, but we're putting a slight limitation on it - each nomination a film has counts for $1, and our teams of five cannot exceed a $20 budget, so a selection of The Power of the Dog in the first round would mean the drafter is putting 60% of their budget behind it. What's our strategy based on this rule? And which films do we think will make the most of their nominations? Listen in to find out! Vote for the winner here!
