e-flux Education editor Juliana Halpert talks to Coleman Collins. Collins is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and researcher whose work explores notions of diaspora in relation to technological methods of transmission, translation, copying, and reiteration. His most recent projects examine the connections between things-in-the-world and their digital approximations, paying particular attention to the ways in which real and virtual spaces are socially produced. Working across sculpture, video, photography, and text, Collins' practice attempts to locate a synthesis between seemingly opposed terms: subject and object; object and image; original and duplicate; freedom and captivity. Coleman Collins is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow. He has also received support from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation. He received an MFA from UCLA in 2018, and was a 2017 resident at the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture. In 2019, he participated in the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program. Recent exhibitions and screenings have taken place at e-flux, New York; Ehrlich Steinberg, Los Angeles; Herald Street, London; Soldes, Los Angeles; the Palestine Festival of Literature, Jerusalem/Ramallah; Larder, Los Angeles; Hesse Flatow, New York; Brief Histories, New York; Carré d'Art, Nîmes; and the Kunsthalle Wien in Vienna. His work is in the permanent collection of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of California, Irvine. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
Ep.233 Mario Joyce's work is rooted in his genealogical research of his family, going back to the 1600s. Incorporating imagery, memories, and stories from his familial research, Joyce incorporates vintage collage materials and soil from the farm he grew up on into his sumptuously textured paintings, weaving together a rich tapestry of his origins. A self-taught artist, Joyce mines his ancestral lineage as well as his personal experience growing up in rural Ohio as a Queer Black man. His work delves into how memories evolve over time and across generations, transforming into intricate capsules of meaning that convey messages of identity, belonging, and place. Mario Joyce lives and works in Los Angeles. He has participated in several residencies including Sointula House Residency, Sointula, BC (2024); Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Skowhegan, ME (2023); Pratt Forward, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY (2022); La Brea Studio Residency, Los Angeles, CA (2021). Scherer has been awarded residencies at Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting, ME and Vermont Studio Center, VT. Ep.212 Erika Ranee received her MFA in painting from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship in Painting/1996 and 2021; an AIM Fellowship from the Bronx Museum and was granted artist residence at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and a recipient of “Anonymous Was A Woman” grant in December 2023. She was awarded a studio grant from the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation in 2011. Her work has been featured throughout the New York/NYC region in group exhibitions at the Southampton Arts Center, at BRIC/Project Room and at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery. In 2019 she exhibited in her first international show at Wild Palms in Dusseldorf, Germany. An encore international group show took place in Paris at the Brigitte Mulholland Galerie, summer 2024. Other selected group shows include The Landing Gallery in Los Angeles, CA, Hollis Taggart Gallery in Southport, CT; the Milton Resnick & Pat Passlof Foundation, NYC and recently at Venus Over Manhattan, NYC. About Julia Haft-Candell Julia Haft-Candell (b. 1982, Oakland, California) received a BA from the University of California, Davis, before graduating from the MFA program at California State University, Long Beach, in 2010. She was a summer resident in 2016 at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, Madison, Maine, and has been awarded multiple grants from the Center for Cultural Innovation and most recently the California Community Foundation Fellowship in 2019. She lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Sarah Brenneman (b.1975, Middletown, OH) lives and works in West Orange, New Jersey. She received her degrees in painting from Columbus College of Art (BFA) and Virginia Commonwealth University (MFA). She has had several solo shows including with Garvey|Simon at Artisan Lofts (New York, NY - a two-person exhibition with Gary Petersen 2024); Gold Scopophilia (Montclair, NJ) in 2020 and with Jeff Bailey Gallery (New York, NY) in 2004, 2006 and 2011. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally most recently with La Grange Gallery, (Reims, France) in 2022. Areum Yang (b. 1994 Seoul, South Korea; lives and works in New York) graduated from Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea in 2017 and from the Hunter MFA program, New York, NY in 2021. Gail Spaien lives in South Portland, Maine. She earned her B.F.A. from the University of Southern Maine and her M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. Spaien has received numerous fellowships including the Ucross Foundation; Varda Artist Residency Program; Millay Colony for the Arts; the Djerassi Foundation Resident Artists Program; and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Sarah talks with NY based artist and recent MFA grad Alexander Brewington about his solo show "What Burns Beneath", leaving grad school and the significance of fire in his paintings. The conversation was recorded in April 2024. About Alexander Brewington Alexander Brewington is a Brooklyn based figurative painter, received his MFA from Pratt Institute, 2023. His painting practice is about forming a contemporary narrative between the intersection of classical mythology and urban environments. Brewington was commissioned to paint the Joseph Branch Creek mural in Silver Spring, MD. His work has been featured in Hyperallergic and E-flux Education. He was recently awarded a Pratt Fellowship to attend the 2023 Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. On this episode I'm joined by Sedrick Chisom as we discuss his latest exhibition at C L E A R I N G gallery, And 108 Prayers of Evil. Sedrick Chisom (b. 1989, Philadelphia) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received a full scholarship to study at Cooper Union, where he completed his BFA in 2016 and was awarded the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation Award for Exceptional Ability. In 2018, he received his MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Chisom was awarded the 2018–2019 VCU Fountainhead Fellowship in Painting and Drawing at the Macedonia Institute and was a 2019 resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.At the center of Sedrick Chisom's practice is a commitment to confounding racial origin myths and pseudosciences toward creating apocalyptic fantasies in writing and painting. Appropriating imagery from Black Lives Matter demonstrations, medieval Christian iconography, and Greek mythology, Chisom questions who has the power to construct natural and social worlds, upending the authority of those worlds in the process. After receiving his BFA from University of Louisville in 2005, James Robert Southard worked for years as a freelance photojournalist and artist. In 2008 he left for Pittsburgh for graduate school in Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University. After graduating in 2011he was invited to international exhibitions such as the Moscow Biennale for Young Art, Hel'Pitts'Sinki'Burgh in Finland, Camaguey Cuba's 5th International Video Art Fest and he has participated in the Internet Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in Venice Italy. After receiving his MFA in 2011, James taught as a photography professor at University of Louisville, Kentucky School of Art and Carnegie Mellon University as a professor of fine arts. In the winter and spring of 2012, James continued his series Tooth and Nail with the collaboration of the city of Seoul, Korea at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon. Soon after he took his project to Maine where he was a participant at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, then later at MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, Yaddo Retreat in New York, Jentel in Wyoming, Vermont Studio Center and to the MASS MoCA residency in North Adams, MA.He has since returned to academia by teaching photography at the University of Kentucky.
Alexander Brewington (b. 1996, Silver Spring, MD), lives and works in Ridgewood, NY. He holds an MFA from Pratt Institute, and a BFA in visual art from St. Johns University. His work was previously included in the group exhibition ‘Departure' at Thierry Goldberg. Brewington has been in residence at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and his work was featured in Hyperallergic and Canvas Rebel Magazine. On this episode I'm joined by Mario Joyce. Mario Joyce is a self-taught African American artist based in Los Angeles. His process began early and was heavily influenced by prejudices experienced growing up Black and Queer in rural Ohio. He uses genealogical research, soil from the Ohio he grew up on, carefully sourced vintage collage materials and oil paint to explore how American History is steeped in selective storytelling that neglects to share the experiences of marginalized communities. Mario is a 2023 alum of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, has recently completed the Pratt>FORWARD residency at New Lab in Brooklyn Navy Yard, in New York City. Joyce's latest show at UTA Artist Space in Los Angeles closed a few weeks prior when we sit down to talk about his work and practice.

Luanne Stovall is an artist and color theorist with an MFA in painting from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Tom Burckhardt was born in New York City in 1964. He attended SUNY Purchase and graduated with a BFA in painting in 1986, after which he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been the subject of over thirty solo exhibitions at institutions including the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, TX; the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY; and the Knoxville Art Museum in Knoxville, TN. Burckhardt was a participant of the 2016 Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kerala, India and an artist in residence at the Yaddo Foundation in New York State in 2019 and Pepper House, Kochi, India in 2020. Painters Christina Quarles and Jenna Gribbon join curator and host Gemma Rolls-Bentley in discussing their methods for constructing queerness in their lives and artworks, the importance of holding a viewers gaze, lesbian intensity, and CAMP! This episodes title is a line from “School Note,” a poem by Audre Lorde.Jenna Gribbon's oil paintings constitute an important new entry in the long lineage of figurative art, extending its narrative possibilities to explore the act of looking. Her vivid portraits, frequently nudes or partial nudes, depict those closest to her, and sometimes the artist herself, in candid poses, during uncanny moments. Her recent work most prominently features her partner, Mackenzie Scott, whose recurrence both personalizes and simultaneously establishes her as a kind of avatar; shifting the focus of the painting away from the figure and toward the way the figure is framed. By painting otherwise fleeting scenes, the artist adds texture, depth, and a sense of permanency to these temporal images, highlighting themes of pleasure, joy, and expanding the lexicon of queer iconography. To Sanford Biggers, the past, present, and future are intertwined and all part of one big, long now. Over the past three decades, the Harlem-based artist has woven various threads of place and time—in ways not dissimilar to a hip-hop D.J. or a quilter—to create clever, deeply metaphorical, darkly humorous, and often beautiful work across a vast array of mediums, including painting, sculpture, video, photography, music, and performance. We meet legendary artist Sylvia Snowden from her home in Chicago where she has been painting for the past 60+ years!Known for her use of abundantly thick, layered paint, Snowden has developed a visual language in which gems of colour and texture emerge from densely-worked under layers. From dark and earthy tones to the vibrant and artificial, Snowden's command of chromatic range is the fuel of her expressionistic style. Over the course of her more than five-decade-long career, in which she has always painted in series, Snowden developed an adroitness with her medium. She initially employed oil paint and pastels then moved toward acrylic–a less toxic and faster-drying alternative–after having children. Snowden paints sculpturally, her compositions range from larger-than-life to portrait-sized. Her process allows visible evidence of constructed layers and employs impasto that interacts with her bold figures caught in motion with physical weight.Snowden's voluminous bodies, often contrapposto, are surrounded by peaks of shifting chroma in a physical manifestation of feeling; she depicts the tension and intensity of life, and the troubled, optimistic, and dramatic elements of our sublime existence. Snowden encapsulates the psychological essence of her subjects–some of whom were unhoused and transient, displaced by gentrification, others with whom she had intimate or long-term relationships–their triumphs, paranoia, agony, and anger are all visible; these works convey an emotionally turbulent environment. Snowden's expressive paintings reference the immediate lives of these individuals, and act as interpretations of each subject's psyche. As a serial painter, Snowden alternates between representation and abstraction, exhausting her emotional self between each mode as she articulates the struggles and successes of humanity.Snowden received a scholarship to Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, ME and has a certificate from La Grande Chaumier in Paris, France. She holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Howard University. At Howard University she studied under David C. Driskell.[1] She has taught at Howard University, Cornell and Yale, has served as an artist-in-residence, a panelist, visiting artist, lecturer/instructor and curator in universities, galleries and art schools both in the United States and internationally. She has exhibited at the National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Women's Museum, Montclair Art Museum, Baltimore Museum of Art, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, The Phillips Collection, Heckscher Museum of Art, and the Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial Museum and National Archives for Black Women's History [1]. Judy Fox is a sculptor who works in the Hudson Valley, with a studio in Rhinebeck, New York. As an undergraduate she studied sculpture at Yale (BA1978) and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She received advanced degrees in Art History (MA1983) and Conservation (1985) from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (NYU). She is a Senior Critic and professor at the New York Academy of Art. Fox has participated in numerous exhibitions around the U.S. and in Europe. A fellow of both Yaddo and MacDowell residencies, she has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the “Anonymous Was a Woman” Foundation, the National Academy of Design, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. She has had solo exhibitions at The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu; John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, WI; and Kunsthalle im Pallazo, Liestal, Switzerland. She has been the subject of many reviews and articles, including features in Art in America (2000), Artnet (2007), Sculpture Review (2010), O Magazine (2012), Ceramics: Art and Perception (2013), New Ceramics (2015), and Artforum (2019). Ep. 168 features Chase Hall's (b. 1993, St. Paul, Minnesota). His paintings and sculptures respond to generational celebrations and traumas encoded throughout American history. Responding to a variety of social and visual systems, each of which intersects with complex trajectories of race, hybridity, economics, and personal agency, Hall generates images whose materiality is as crucial to their compositional makeup as their indelible approach to representation. A central body of paintings, made with drip-brew techniques derived from coffee beans and acrylic pigments on cotton supports, is notable for both its conceptual scope and its intimacy. The use of brewed coffee carries powerful symbolic weight since it evokes centuries-old geopolitical systems associated with the commodification of a plant native to Africa, but in Hall's hands, it also becomes a means of achieving subtle visual textures, a range of brown skin tones, and a mark-making vocabulary precipitated on the closeness of touch. Above all, however, it is his improvisational willingness to immerse himself in the indefinable personal hieroglyphics of each picture that gives his work its resonance and impact. Chase Hall was the subject of a solo exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia in 2023. In 2022, Hall was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to produce a large-scale artwork, the monumental diptych Medea Act I & II, for its opera house in New York, on view through June 2023. I am so excited to say that my guest is one of the most renowned painters working in the world right now, Christina Quarles. A painter of bodies that stretch, condense, tangle, and meld into shapes that range from fleshy to stringy, Quarles is globally hailed for transposing this warm-blooded vessel onto a flat surface with ambiguity and effervescence. Her paintings make us feel, viscerally react both physically and emotionally with their fluorescent colouring, limbs that dismantle from the body, faces devoid of detail that exist between reality and surreality, all while echoing the constantly in flux body that we all live within. Born in 1985 in Chicago, and based in Los Angeles, Quarles emphasises through paint her and our multitudinous positions in the world. Working with acrylic paint and programmes such as adobe illustrator for the background and structures that surround the figures, her process, like her chosen subject, is full of dichotomies, between the historic and contemporary, absence and presence, night and day, in locations that exist in water and on land, in bodies that are both shadow and the full figure. A graduate of Hampshire College, for which she completed dual BA degrees in Philosophy and Studio Art, an MFA graduate of Yale School of Art and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Quarles in the past few years has exhibited across the globe in some of the most prestigious institutions and group exhibitions, from the landmark Radical Figures at Whitechapel Gallery to last year's Venice Biennale, and has had solo exhibitions at the Hepworth Wakefield and Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, but today we meet her in Menorca, at Hauser & Wirth, for her newly opened exhibition Come In From An Endless Place, which I can't wait to find out more about. Bridget Mullen is a visual artist who grew up in Minnesota. She received her BAE from Drake University and her MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. She has been awarded many residencies including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, The Fine Arts Work Center, The Jan Van Eyck Academie, The Lighthouse Works, The Sharpe Walentas Studio Program, and MacDowell. Bridget has exhibited in the US and abroad at Shulamit Nazarian, LA; Helena Anrather, NY; Nathalie Karg, NY; Annet Gelink, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Fahrenheit Madrid, Madrid, Spain; Anne Barrault, Paris, France; Wild Palms, Düsseldorf, Germany; and Bosse & Baum, London, UK. In this episode of Broken Boxes we talk about the life and current projects of Cherokee/Muscogee artist and composer Elisa Harkins. From her experience of being an adopted child to surviving a near fatal bike accident, Elisa shares both foundational and vulnerable life experiences which gave her strength as an artist. Elisa also reflects on grad school, noting artists who inspired her through insight and mentorship. We speak on how she has used language as a tool in her practice and as a way to access belonging and participation in community. She walks us through Radio III, a collaborative performance project which recently toured Europe. In closing, Elisa reminds us that as we strive to do things in a good way as creatives, we should also not be afraid to take a chance on bold ideas that push our comfort levels. Elisa Harkins is a Native American (Cherokee/Muscogee) artist and composer based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her work is concerned with translation, language preservation, and Indigenous musicology. Harkins uses the Cherokee and Mvskoke languages, electronic music, sculpture, and the body as her tools. She is the first person to use the Cherokee language in a pop song. Harkins received a BA from Columbia College, Chicago, and an MFA from CalArts. She has since continued her education at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited her work at Crystal Bridges, documenta 14, The Hammer Museum, The Heard Museum, and MoMA. In 2020, She created an online Indigenous concert series called 6 Moons and published a CD of Muscogee (Creek)/Seminole Hymns. She is also the DJ of Mvhayv Radio, an Indigenous radio show on 99.1FM in Indianapolis, IN, and streaming from OK#1 in Tulsa, OK. Radio III / ᎦᏬᏂᏍᎩ ᏦᎢ is a dance performance that features music and choreography by Harkins. With support from PICA and Western Front, songs from the performance have been collected into a limited edition double LP, which can be found on Harkins' Bandcamp. With this role, she became a member of Actors Equity Association. Broadway credits include Ain't No Mo' and Chicken and Biscuits. Off Broadway theaters she's worked at are Waterwell, Clubbed Thumb, The Public Theater, to name a few. She can be seen on season 2 of The Ms. Pat Show (BET+) and season 3 of Evil (Paramount+).Mei Ann Teo (they/she) is a queer immigrant from Singapore making theatre & film at the intersection of artistic/civic/contemplative practice. Their critically-acclaimed work has been seen at The Bushwick Starr, Waterwell, The Shed, Shakespeare's Globe, Woolly Mammoth, Theaterworks Hartford, Belgium's Festival de Liege, the Edinburgh Fringe, Beijing Int'l Festival, among others. Awards include LPTW Josephine Abady award and the inaugural Lily Fan Director Lilly Awards. They are an Associate Artistic Director and Director of New Work at Oregon Shakespeare Festival.Sarah Hughes has played many roles in her short time in the labor movement, including steward, officer, organizer, and workshop facilitator. She has worked for the National Education Association (NEA), the Professional Staff Congress at the City University of New York (AFT), and university labor studies programs, including CUNY's NY Union Semester. She has also taught a variety of workshops to city workers, electricians, women workers, and others. She holds a masters in labor studies from UMass Amherst. Prior to joining the Labor Notes staff in 2021, Sarah had been a long time fan, subscriber, volunteer trainer and donor. She attended her first Labor Notes conference in 2008, and is excited for many more. She lives in Flatbush with her labor lawyer husband and their toddler, who also loves picket lines. Waterwell is a group of artists, educators and producers dedicated to telling engrossing stories in unexpected ways that deliberately wrestle with complex civic questions. Founded by Andrew Tilson, the Workers Unite Film Festival, now in its 11th season, is a celebration of Global Labor Solidarity. The Festival aims to showcase student and professional films from the United States and around the world which publicize and highlight the struggles, successes and daily lives of all workers in their efforts to unite and organize for better living conditions and social justice.Superlative, meaning the best of, and Sain meaning to bless, is a multi-talented creative, born in the UK (United Kingdom, England) and raised in Hollis Queens, New York. Born Matthew Munroe, Sain always connected with music by singing with his mother, a vocalist in a church choir who grew up singing. As a child, art was always a passion of Sain's life. Art was always a staple in his life, from drawing full-length comic books to designing logos. Picking up the art of rapping in his early college years, Sain continued with his love of the arts and always wanted to bring his friends with Him wherever he went. Co-creating the creative collective group OGWN with long-time friend Diverze Koncept, he began expanding his ever-growing catalog simply because he loved making music. While pursuing music, he also manages his visual company MMunroeMedia, directing, filming, and editing music videos for other artists, capturing the moment and enhancing the vision with graphics and photography. Breaking into a creative field, whether you choose to be self-employed or not, can really leave you feeling like you're up the creek without a paddle. Who are you supposed to talk to, and when? Also, where do you find them? What are you supposed to do in the meantime until things...happen? And once you start doing that thing, how you do know when to stop? We talked about it all at this panel discussion I moderated with three dynamic young artists, Brendan Keen, Mariel Capanna, and Brittany Bennett, about navigating the difficult transition from school to the working world. Each of them is following a unique path, and has tons to share about what they did wrong...and right! About our guests Brendan Keen https://www.brendankeenstudio.com/ Brendan Keen is an artist and fabricator currently based in West Philadelphia. He was a transfer student at PAFA, where he majored in sculpture. He graduated with a BFA 2012, and was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Memorial Travel scholarship, which meant he stayed a fifth year at PAFA and received a certificate in 2013. When he finished school, he joined the West Philadelphia-based arts collaborative studio and workshop, the Philadelphia Traction Company. Along with the other artists at Traction, he exhibited his sculpture and collaborative works in Philadelphia and San Francisco. For the past eight years Brendan has worked full time as a self-employed Artist and fabricator, creating sculptural installations for public and private clients, including the Logan hotel, the W hotel, the Discovery Center, and private residences. In between jobs, Brendan travels whenever possible, including across Western Europe and around Iceland via bicycle, and most recently across the U.S. in a DIY sprinter camper van. Mariel Capanna https://marielcapanna.com/ Mariel Capanna is a fine artist specializing in fresco who graduated with a BFA from PAFA 2012, and she was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Memorial Travel scholarship, which means she spent an extra year at PAFA and was awarded a certificate in 2013. She received her MFA from Yale School of Art in 2020. She attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2017. She's exhibited many places, including Adams and Ollman (Portland), Central Park (Los Angeles), Gross McCleaf Gallery (Philadelphia), and Good Weather (North Little Rock), COOP (Nashville) and at the Bowtie Project (Los Angeles). And has been the recipient of numerous residencies and fellowships (in addition to the Cresson): the 2019 Robert Schoelkopf Memorial Traveling Fellowship Recipient, the 2018 Haverford College VCAM Philadelphia Artist-in-Residence, a 2016 Tacony LAB Artist-in-Residence, a 2014 Independence Foundation Visual Arts Fellow, the Guapamacátaro Arts & Ecology Residency and The Mountain School of Art in 2016. Mariel currently serves as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Studio Art at Williams College, and a Fresco Instructor at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her ongoing project Little Stone, Open Home, with Good Weather is a long-term and perpetually changing fresco in a single-car garage in North Little Rock, Arkansas. At PAFA, Brittany focused on academic oil painting and graphite drawing. Her work from this time is the result of meticulous observation of textures in nature and a celebration of details. After graduating, she completed a graduate program for Medical and Biological Illustration at Johns Hopkins. She currently works at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where half her week is in Stream Studios servicing the hospital network at large, and the other half she runs RIVER: a medical illustration service just for the Radiology Department. She is an artist with training in biology, anatomy, and visual communication who creates didactic illustrations and other visual aids. Brittany works with medical professionals at CHOP to produce patient education materials, figures for scientific literature, illustrated surgical training guides, 3D anatomical models, and more.

He lives and works in Chicago and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Andrew Ross received his BFA from The Cooper Union in 2011, where he was awarded the Gelman Trust Award for Excellence in Sculpture. He attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2011. He's been a resident and/or fellow of programs including The Triangle Arts Association, The Drawing Center's Open Sessions, LMCC's Swing Space, The Macedonia Institute, The Bruce High Quality Foundation, and he is a current awardee of Two Trees' Cultural Space Subsidy Program. Ross has exhibited in group exhibitions at The Hessel Museum, The Drawing Center, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Artists Space, Center for the Humanities at CUNY, White Columns, and Greene Naftali. He has staged solo exhibitions at Signal (Brooklyn, NY), American Medium (NY, NY), Clima Gallery (Milan, Italy), and False Flag (Long Island City, NY). Ross' work has been reviewed in Artforum, Art in America, Cultured, Flash Art, Mousse, and the Brooklyn Rail. Ross is a sculptor and new media artist who creates fragmentary constructions with figurative elements and everyday objects. With attention to metaphoric associations that his imagery elicits Ross' tableau scenes oscillate between speculative fiction and cartoonish satire. His figures are chimeric and mythical in appearance yet typically occupied with some form of work and juxtaposed with commonplace detritus. Joining traditional sculpture, assemblage and digital imaging, Ross's works capture existential issues regarding the conundrum of representation in our age of many avatars.
Dana Lok is a visual artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. In her paintings and drawings, she aims to capture the magic and unease found in the gap between signs and the things they represent. Her recent work imagines metaphors for how we create knowledge and draw conceptual schemes together. Solo exhibitions include Part and Parse, Miguel Abreu Gallery, New York (2022) One Second Per Second at PAGE, New York (2020); Words Without Skin at Clima, Milan (2019); Mind's Mouth at Bianca D'Allessandro, Copenhagen (2018); Soft Fact at Clima, Milan (2017); and The Set of All Sets at Chewday's, London (2016). Ep.115 features Beverly Semmes. She is a sculptor whose work incorporates painting, drawing, film, photography, and performance. These complementary elements adhere in surprising ways, probing the paradoxes and complexities of the female body and its representation. Current exhibitions include inclusion in a group show at Canada gallery curated by Kahlil Robert Irving titled SUMMER Nights, which opened on July 8th, 2022. Semmes recently participated in an exhibition titled Process on view at the Alexander McQueen flagship location on Old Bond Street in London. For this presentation 12 visual artists from around the world were invited to respond to the upcoming Alexander McQueen collection. In May 2022 Semmes created Pool in collaboration with Jennifer Minniti and Emily Mast at JOAN exhibition space in Los Angeles. Pool was on view through mid June 2022. Semmes' paintings and sculptures were also recently on view in Witch Hunt at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles; a Hammer Museum billboard announcing the Witch Hunt exhibition continues to loom over the historic corner of Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards. The artist has had dozens of solo exhibitions at institutions such as MoMA PS1, ICA Philadelphia, Sculpture Center, the MCA Chicago, the Wexner Center for the Arts, Artist's Space, the Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Frances Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. A solo exhibition of paintings titled Pot Peek was on view at Susan Inglett Gallery in New York through mid March 2022. Semmes received her M.F.A. in Sculpture from the Yale School of Art (1987). She also studied at the New York Studio School, the Boston Museum School, and at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture where she now serves on the Governors Board. I Like Your Work: Conversations with Artists, Curators & Collectors
Deborah Wasserman was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, and is currently living and working in NYC. Wasserman is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited in the USA at The Queens Museum Of The Arts, The Bronx Museum Of The Arts, White Columns, Pierogi 2000, Socrates Sculpture Park, and A.I.R gallery. Internationally, Wasserman has shown in Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, and Israel. Wasserman is a grant recipient of the Experimental Television Center, Aljira Center for the Arts, the A.I.M. Program at the Bronx Museum and the America-Israel cultural foundation. She received an IAP Social Practice fellowship from NYFA in 2017, a grant from the Puffin Foundation in 2018, a grant from the Citizens committee for New York in 2019, and a Queens Council On The Arts New Work grant in 2020. Wasserman has been awarded a Su- Casa award from the New York State Department Of Cultural Affairs every year since 2015. In 2021 she was invited to attend Aunt Karen's Farm residency as well as the Skowhegan Alumni Residency. In addition, Wasserman is a Finalist for the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship 2020 in the category of Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts. “Throughout my life, I've been a wander woman, a nomad, and a seeker. I paint landscapes as a way to deepen and extend my roots, ruminate on the places I've seen, and express my impressions of the landslides of the present day. A person is a mold of the landform of their birth but also a creator of their own terrain. I wish to fuse my personal impressions of the Brazilian, “Indigenous” and lush lands, where I was born, and the war-torn coasts in the Middle East, where I was raised, with collective narratives of roaming on this shared terrain, at this landmark. Not above, but below, the landscape is our body, a mother, a womb, origin, and destination. I paint the ground to hold and capture the world in a frame, to mold the pigments as a living, breathing clay, that shapes my native land. My painting process entails multiple actions of layering, pouring, dripping, spilling, erasure and mark-making. Surfaces and images get erased as they emerge, painted over as they solidify, and then altered again, leaving behind the rich soil of the under-paint. My impulse to destroy is as fierce as my motive to create.I paint on the wall, floor, and table, mimicking the wanderer's frequent relocations, traveling on the canvas, North, South, East, and West, where the flow of image and gestures I've picked up along the way, spring up. Applying layers of translucent paint from brightly colored grounds to nuanced earth tones I merge modernism with the traditional application of oil paint.Stained rags and torn clothes, ‘lowly,' and 'discarded,' aids in my humble labor, worn on my and my children's skin, get adhered to the surface, as ‘body,' as abandon, as an alchemical process, as recycled form and matter, as evidence of process, a woman's labor, unseen. My paintings and drawings, realistic, abstract, and magical, depict inner and outer terrains that allude to the body, to the earth, to paths and physical quests. Flora, fauna, and the elements of fire, water, earth, and sky are all manifestations of inner vistas as much as outer typographies, rooted in meditations of life, cycles of time, and change. The lands which I paint are often hybridized, conjuring multiple sources, climates and terrains, a synthesis, a migrant's mind. I weigh on the personal and collective narratives of wanderings on our life-giving earth, the grounds which are rapidly cracking under the heavy stomping of our feet. With striking paint marks, suggestive and realistic imagery, I depict sunken houses, mountains speckled with tents, piles of stones, cut trees, and rings of smoke. I often meddle with perspective, merging the ‘horizon line' into a swirling tapestry of shifting forms, like our crumbling terrains. Alongside these prophecies, are utopian vistas of another materiality, with fervent beauty, untouched and unburdened by our hardened reality. With paint and a brush, through colors, movement, and depth of emotion, I enter a doorway, away from relativity, where I'm in the perfection behind this duality.
