Last week we learned about using the four different styles of humor to your advantage, and who makes a good target for a joke. But what if you read the room wrong and absolutely bomb? On this episode of How To!, the second in a two-part series, we resume our conversation with Naomi Bagdonas, co-author of Humor, Seriously!, and Michael Terry, the most hilarious hedge fund guy we've ever met. They swap stories about office jokes that fell flat, how to navigate a suddenly tense situation and what to do if your humor accidentally offends someone (especially your boss). If you liked this episode, check out “How To Be Funny” with comedian Gary Gulman. If you want to discover your own humor style, take the test on Naomi and Jennifer's website. Do you have a joke that killed at the office, or totally bombed? Send us a note at howto@slate.com or leave us a voicemail at 646-495-4001. Y'all sit down and get ready, because it's Humor Appreciation Month! We are showcasing comedians this month so if you are interested in learning more about that, please check out the website. Because it is Humor Appreciation Month, we better learn about some humor. Right? Today's guest is Christie Buchele, a comedy instructor who has agreed to teach us how we can be at least 10% funnier. Key Takeaways in this Episode:The moment when Christie figured out that she is funny How to get started writing comedyHow to be a comedian - baby steps you need to knowReveal the two sides of comedyWhat are the purposes of comedy?Reveal the formula to become a successful comedianWhat to do when things don't go well on stageLearning is success especially when you're the leaderThe use of Humor in the workplaceAbout the GuestChristie Buchele is a Denver-based comedian who "fell" into comedy in 2010 when she went to see a cute guy do an open mic and thought to herself "I can do better." She was right. Despite being raised by her single father named Todd, Christie made a name for herself by joking about the heart-wrenching and hilarious realities of being a woman with a disability. Christie is a strong stand-up with weak legs and her comedy aims to make the audience think about how they perceive people with disabilities while making them hurt from laughter. Christie reps the Mile High City hard while crushing audiences with a wry, biting style that's a bit sweet, and a little bit surly; proving time and again that you can say almost anything with a smile on your face and a gimp in your step.http://www.kpcomedy.com/christie-buchele.htmlhttp://facebook.com/Kirkland-Productions-123725907663590/http://twitter.com/kirklandprodBOOKING@KPCOMEDY.COMSupport the show (https://paypal.me/leadwithlevity)

Long before Jimmy Fallon, way before Jay Leno, before Johnny Carson, or Jack Paar .. NBC's Tonight Show was hosted by its co-creator Steve Allen. In the fall of 1954, the 32 year old comedian and entertainer became the host of televisions first-ever late night talk show. Largely thanks to Alan's intelligent humor, The Tonight Show became a hit. Steve Allen soon moved on to other Ventures, but was always widely popular and in-demand. I first met him in early 1987, when he wrote a book he modestly called How To Be Funny.

Ahh cryptocurrency… Everyone’s favorite thing that they know close to nothing about. What’s more fun than gambling on pure speculative meme currencies that could either make you rich or leave you with nothing but an empty web page reading ‘penis.’ This week we explore cryptocurrency and play a fun little Fake News vs. Real News game.
Kick back and enjoy this Friday’s ep where we talk about popular idioms, some movies pitches too hot for TV, and what the real meaning of life is. Or something like that. I can’t remember. Just do us a flavor and listen.
Politics is a funny old game and it's always ripe for satire.Tiernan Douieb is the host of the Partly Political Podcast, a hilarious show that talks about the latest goings-on in the world of UK politics and how sometimes it can be hard to be funnier when the jokes come ready-made.Tiernan is a professional stand up comedian and is very active in doing events specifically aimed at kids. Love, love can keep us together. Unless I hire my crack team of lawyers to take half of everything you own, you P.O.S… I know you were with your secretary! Folks, this week we play a lovely game. We kick off the season of love in February by guessing how long certain notable celebrity marriages lasted. Spoiler alert, we get to a tie breaker and it is epic!
If you’re assisted to rambling please do not listen to this. In fact call 1-800-Rambler for support. Again do not listen. We ramble and ramble and ramble and… ramble in this episode. From stimulus check comedy hour, to gears being grinded by standard FDA protocol, to revisionist cancel culture, we got a fun show in the books.
A lot of people loathe them, and few love them. We take on two pretty ‘head scratching’ movies in this week’s installment of Trash or Pass where we analyze a debated movie for its flaws and potential missed highlights. Then we talk about how we can improve upon the existing version to polish up these turds. This week, we talk THE VILLAGE and SWISS ARMY MAN.
Enough is enough. If you don’t want to spend another two months of bliss into the new year only to be t-boned by an ‘unexpected’ ten month little pandy, then you better listen to this episode. We lay out 10 bold… and sure as spit true… predictions that will unfold in this year of 2021. If you want to get prepared and proactively hit this year running, then check it out.
What is the worst type of humour out there? In this themed episode Juan and I discuss the topic of 'Joking'. We start off with our usual MMM's (big overlap this time) and a definition before diving into the serious side of humour. But we don't stay there long before getting into some humour of our own. We chat about crappy styles of humour (pranks/sarcasm/dad jokes), my crash course in how to be funny, Sid the Cookie Monster and ending with how to take life a bit less seriously and see the joke in everything. As always, we hope you enjoy, Mere Mortals out!Timeline:0:00 - Intro & Mere Mortal Moments2:17 - Definition3:34 - Relief & Superiority Theory8:26 - The art of delivering a joke11:48 - Not a fan of prank videos, negative sarcasm and dad jokes18:07 - How to be funny!20:18 - The funniest Juan has ever been24:16 - Mere Mortal pranksters28:19 - The Cookie Monster's real name29:19 - Taking everything as a joke31:07 - Mere Mortals shirtsAbout Mere Mortals:Striving for excellence through life's lessons. And now for something completely different. And funny. Feeling a little down? Feeling a little blue or stressed out? This interview with Rebecca Rowley just might cure a few ills. Rebecca is here with her new book, How To Be Funny and Make People Fat, a cozy comedy memoir featuring recipes and vignettes about how one humorist's mother influenced her comedic, culinary, and life skills in and out of the kitchen. She’s also here to preview her new anthology of stories, due out later this month – The 27-Hour Day. Rebecca "R.J." Rowley is a joker of all trades who captures life’s absurdities on the page and keeps them there until the proper authorities arrive. A Colorado native, she is the author of cozy-comedy memoirs, humorous fiction, and satirical guides to life. Outside of her library of books, other publications include satirical articles, short works of fiction, and random acts of poetry. Intro music by Moby Outro by Dan-o-Songs
Being interesting isn't just about knowing things or having done incredible things. You also want to be able to share those experiences with others. Most of us don’t think about the way we present ourselves to others - not just in how we look or how we act, but about why people should want to get to know us or spend time with us. This is why you need to know how to tell stories. When you’re in an interview and they ask you about a time that you overcame a challenge, you’re telling a story. When your date asks you about where you grew up or what you do for a living, you’re telling a story. When you’re pitching your services or your idea to others… you’re telling a story. Telling a story about yourself is part of how you convey who you are. And the best, most interesting people out there are the ones who know how to convey information about themselves in a compelling, entertaining manner that not only gets the point across, but keeps the listener actively engaged. Show Highlights: Why how you tell your story is more important than what your story is about How focusing on the end is the key to telling a good story The way to structure a great story The importance of creating vivid characters Why every good story starts with the climax ...and so much more. In Episode Twenty, live from an Academy Award nominee’s driveway, Peter and Bec talk Julianne Moore’s Oscar hopes, look at the Kickstarter to fund a Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan museum in an apartment hallway and get down and stay down in discussing the 50 Shades Of Grey phenomenon. It’s back to school for students across the nation and for Peter and Bec who have pens and notepaper at the ready for a lesson in ‘How To Be Funny’ straight from Peter’s 1999 diary. Then, in honour of Julianne’s Oscar (she has it by the time you are reading this, probably) it’s Julie Meets Power Suits Meets Rebecca De Tuna Mornay in the 1992 psychological thriller ‘The Hand That Rocks The Cradle’. Plus: News Minute, Sports, acrostic poems, lots of talk about period blood for all the fans, the place where you can put your wind chimes and a very thoughtful Valentines surprise.
