Is CEO a noun or a verb? You may have never contemplated that question but the differences it implies are significant. What do you think of, what comes up for you internally, when you hear the word CEO? Do you have a visual in your mind of a particular person? A functional role? A personae? A specific vibe? As we continue on our path of new and of change this season, I want to challenge your brain and your default thinking. CEO is an acronym that has, for decades, been a very masculine term and title. And, as such, has been difficult for some women to embrace. But what if we viewed “CEO” not as a noun, but rather a verb? What if it is about actions you're taking to put your magic out into the world, to allow that magic of a business you've been kissed with to grow and expand?  “Whatever you choose to call yourself, my goal is always that it instills a little discomfort. And it invites you to a new level of gravitas, a new level of presence, and a bigger, bolder – but also authentic – voice in leadership.” – Kris Plachy What You'll Learn Changing your voice and presence Implications of the term CEO Gravitas and out of the weeds Impairing growth in the moment Power and presence of CEOing Contact Info and Recommended Resources Connect with Kris Plachy Want to be coached live by Kris for an upcoming episode? You've just finished your annual strategic planning meeting, which hopefully if you listened to https://findinggravitas.com/episode/5-tips-for-better-strategic-planning-meetings (episode 73 of our podcast,) went a little better than usual. Now you're sitting at your desk with binders full of big ideas and lofty goals for where to take your company next. And as a leader, it's your responsibility to seize that heightened energy from your team and run with it. So how are you going to do that? One word: ACCOUNTABILITY On first glance, ‘accountability' might conjure up some negative feelings. It certainly does for Jan, who has long associated the word with blame.  “When people say, I'm gonna hold you accountable, it means you've got to do this. Because if you don't, you're gonna suffer the consequences,” Jan says. “And that's not what accountability is all about.” What accountability should look like is you as an authentic leader using your management skills to inspire your team. Instead of just “trying your best,” start thinking outside the box and pushing your team to reach for loftier goals. After all, how are we going to grow and change this industry if we're only focused on playing it safe?  In the second part of this special solo series of Finding Gravitas, Jan breaks down company accountability and how to do it right in the automotive industry. For more on accountability, check out Jan's https://findinggravitas.com/episode/how-to-hold-others-accountable-with-brian-moran-founder-and-ceo-of-the-execution-company-and-co-author-of-uncommon-accountability (recent episode) with Brian Moran, co-author of https://uncommonaccountability.com/ (Uncommon Accountability). Themes discussed in this episode:  What accountability really means How to be clear about your goals and expectations  Why positive language gets things done What it means to take ownership of an objective How to create a safe environment for high performance The importance of metrics and how to track them  Featured Expert: Jan Griffiths (Host)What she does: Jan is the co-founder and president of Gravitas Detroit, an organization dedicated to cultivating authentic leadership by providing courses, workshops, speaking events, and more. She is also the host of the https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/finding-gravitas/id1494409131 (Finding Gravitas) podcast. Episode HighlightsTimestamped inflection points from the show [0:37] Adjust your strategy: Jan recaps her top five tips from episode 73 on how to improve your strategic planning meetings to create a more authentic leadership culture. [3:14] Where to go next: Effective strategic planning is essential, but what are the needed steps to put your new ideas into action? How do you carry out objectives and keep people accountable for their goals? [6:32] Definition and clarity: You can't hold your team accountable if they don't know exactly what they're being held accountable for. Be clear and direct with specific goals, objectives and tasks. [7:24] Positive language: Jan explains why it's so important to use positive accountability language and why it helps get things done. [12:22] Own it: What does it mean to encourage your team to take ownership over an action item? In this segment, Jan discusses how you can inspire your team to own their tasks and why doing so will hold them accountable. [15:09] Fear and failure: Our tendency to play it safe comes back to our natural fear of failure. But playing it safe isn't going to change the automotive industry. Here's how to break that mold and create an environment that allows your team to aim higher. [17:24] Metrics and tracking: Jan explains why she's researching the OKR method — objectives and key results — to track progress and improve accountability. [19:37] A brand new look: Jan's taking a short break following this episode of Finding Gravitas to take a step back and rebrand. Listen to this...

Starring Owen Miller and Katana Malone alongside Wight, the film is slated for release on July 15, 2022 from Gravitas VenturesGravitas Ventures, an Anthem Sports & Entertainment, Inc. company, has acquired North American rights to J.R. Poli's drama MARCUS, it was announced today. Based on Poli's award-winning short film of the same name, MARCUS stars Owen Miller, Katana Malone, Todd Bruno, Jennifer Lynn Sharp, and seven-time world wrestling champion Paul Wight.Written and directed by J.R. Poli, the film was produced by Poli, Jose Luis Martinez, and Owen Miller. MARCUS will be available in theaters and to rent and own on North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms through Gravitas Ventures on July 15, 2022.Marcus has a checkered past and an unstable present. Unexpected news brings a new opportunity. He leaves his life behind and sets off to find purpose and forgiveness. But Marcus will have to face the consequences of his past and overcome the greatest obstacle of all: Himself."We are ecstatic to be teaming up with Gravitas Ventures, a distributor that has been around for so long with such a large library of films. Their enthusiasm and eagerness to help push the film's important message gives us confidence that it will impact the right audience," said J.R. Poli."We at Gravitas are happy to present the redemptive story of Marcus. Owen Miller, Katana Malone, and Paul Wight deliver their characters' voices with a depth and authenticity we believe will resonate with audiences in theaters and on VOD this summer," said Bill Guentzler, Gravitas Ventures Senior Director of Acquisitions.PAUL WIGHT PROVIDES DETAILS BEHIND UPCOMING DRAMATIC ROLE IN MARCUS (FROM WRESTLING INC . COM)Paul Wight, formerly known as The Big Show while in WWE, will star in an upcoming movie "Marcus," written and directed by J.R. Poli. In an exclusive interview with Wrestling Inc., the former six-time World Champion discussed the film and his role, which is somewhat different than the more comedic parts he's played in previous movies."Originally, being part of this project was really just to help produce it and get this project going," Wight said. "Then there was an opportunity for a role in the picture, and I read the script and I was like, 'Yeah, I'd like to try Gus.' Because it is a very serious role, but Gus is a very important component to 'Marcus,' because Gus is actually one of the interactions that Marcus has with someone that's really trying to understand Marcus in his own way and trying to be supportive, but really doesn't understand how to know Marcus. Yes, it's a security guard role, but at the same time there's a lot more depth to the character and to the plot line of the story.""In acting, I want to try to push myself and push my boundaries and try to find things that are not what you would typically see me doing," Wight continued. "Sometimes it's hard to find those roles."Professional wrestling has seen multiple wrestlers transition from wrestling to Hollywood, with the most famous examples being The Rock, John Cena, and Batista. Wight is a somewhat understated name in that company - he's been in quite a few movies prior to this one, though typically in less central roles, from "The Waterboy" to "Fighting with my Family.""Marcus" also stars Owen Miller, Katana Malone, and Toddy Bruno.MARCUS is now available in theaters, VOD and digital

We often talk about the importance of body language and facial expressions, but do you know how to use body language effectively as a leader?Today we are joined by Richard Newman, CEO and founder of Body Talk.  Body Talk are the global leaders in evidence-based communication.  Richard is the author of the book “You were born to speak”.  He is also the recipient of the coveted cicero award for speechwriting.  In today's interview we explore the science of storytelling; leader's presence and something Richard calls “Leaders LIFT”Richard spent part of his early life living in the Himalayas teaching English to Tibetan monks. During this time he discovered a deep interest in the role of body language and how people with no common language can still somehow understand each other.A key element is congruence.  Everything about your body language and facial expressions needs to be congruent with the message you are delivering. When we are incongruent we confuse people and fail to connect with them authenticallyCommunication is all about how we connect with people.  Congruence helps us to connect authentically with people and make them feel like they matter to us.To build congruence we start with self-awareness. Becoming aware of your presence and what your body language and facial expressions are communicating.A key message is about “Gravitas”.  We hear this term a lot but have you ever thought about what it means. It draws from our posture and stance.  Standing in a grounded way where gravity works for us and shows that we cannot be pushed over brings a level of authority of what you are speaking about. To increase your influence on others we must focus on our mindset. Being mindful; focusing on our presence and ensuring that our presentation is focused on the people we are talking about you.  It is not about you, it is about your audience. Effective communication as a leader means that you see the whole of the person.  Listening to the words, listening to the tone, paying attention to the body language and facial expressions. When paying attention to these shifts in body language and tone it is critical to “listen without judgement” and respond with genuine curiosity with questions like “what just shifted for you there?”You can find out more about Richard at ukbodytalk.com and his Instagram @richardnewmanspeaks and on LinkedIn Richard Newman from Bodytalk. Our sponsor today was SPI Media.Apply to join SPI Pro at the following link - https://www.smartpassiveincome.com/pro-application?via=TLP  SPI's amazing array of courses  - https://courses.smartpassiveincome.com/?affcode=30425_fv3kfsf4  The Leadership Project:Facebook Community https://www.facebook.com/groups/334571975014326  LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-leadership-proj  Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/TheLeadershipProj  Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/theleadershipproj  Twitter - https://twitter.com/leadershipproj1  Website - www.mickspiers.com  YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPG9X7weoI4Xs3SreZab

In this episode, Lisa Sun, founder and CEO of GRAVITAS, shares her ideas on how to Reinvent your dreams. She talks about the journey of starting GRAVITAS, getting motivation and support to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, and Reinventing her business to suit people's needs. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Fulfilling your childhood dreams Helping your children achieve their dreams Dealing with unexpected business challenges Reinventing your business ideas to meet different needs [1:53] Lisa and Gravitas' Background Lisa worked at McKinsey & Company for 11 years, advising luxury fashion and beauty brands on issues regarding strategy and operations. GRAVITAS was founded in response to the not-so-terrific first professional review she ever received, noting that she “lacked gravitas.” Lisa realized the transformative power clothing has on women and developed a passion for building shapers into dresses, offering styling solutions that spark confidence in women. [21:05] Implementing a Business Idea From an Unfulfilled Need With her mother's support, Lisa started GRAVITAS to solve the underlying issues of money and people. She didn't fundraise or write up a business plan to get started; Lisa instead used her life savings and a financial model she had saved on a Word document. From working with McKinsey & Company, she already had a head start on developing connections within the fashion industry. [30:48] Dealing With the Impact of COVID-19 Despite establishing itself as a brand throughout 2019, GRAVITAS saw a tremendous decrease in sales at the beginning of 2020. Lisa hoped to launch services in China, but COVID-19 had other plans. Because of the newly-implemented stay-at-home policies, many people sent back clothes they wouldn't be able to wear anymore. But that was not the end. GRAVITAS received orders from hospitals to make gowns and masks, although that was not their specialty. There was little profit coming in compared to when they made dresses, but GRAVITAS had to keep the lights on to keep their workers employed. [36:22] GRAVITAS' Reinvention Lisa Reinvented her brand from working to suit the needs of women of different sizes to designing uniforms for the Hilton Hotels in New York and fire and police department uniforms. GRAVITAS has also launched content and sold books on realizing the unmet need to help women feel their best. [40:21] The Main Idea Behind GRAVITAS the Book Lisa's main idea was to instill self-confidence in her readers, to help them discover their superpowers. The book begins to actively make the unconscious conscious that we're the best out in the world. Guest Bio: Lisa Sun is the Founder & CEO of GRAVITAS, a company whose origin story dates back to Lisa's first professional review: that she “lacked gravitas” and “should go buy a new dress, big jewelry, and great shoes.” Realizing the transformative power of clothing, Lisa secured the patent on building shapewear into dresses and launched Gravitas, a Confidence Company offering innovative apparel and styling solutions to makeover women from the inside-out. On the Rock's Politica

We welcome back to the On The Rocks Politica Podcast Government Affairs Correspondent Scott J. Graves for whats turns out to be a bit of a congratulatory interview. Scott maintains our local government reporting for the series Gardner Government Watch as well as providing editorial commentary through our Gravitas series.  After a scathing report on the mishandling of the election of Gardner Monty Tech School Committee members involving Gardner City Councillor James Boone, we continued to provide background on the matter. The circumstances involve whether a person is considered an active elected official at the moment of being duly elected by a body of pre-determined humans (in this case city council members electing a school committee member) or if said individual additionally must be adminsitrered an oath of office. Mr. Boone was duly elected in 2020 but due to Covid 19 his swearing in was forgotten.  After filing a motion demanding an accounting of legal fees related to a case against the city (see report of council meeting 02.22.22), City Council President Elizabeth Kazinskas, backed by a legal commentary provided by Councillor Jim Walsh, decided that serving actively for two years was not enough to consider Mr. Boone officially a represnetative of Gardner on the committee. The attempt to punish councillor Boone did not go un-noticed by M the Media Project. After several days of analysis on the matter, Mr. Boone was quietly re-instated and delivered the oath of office at the City Clerk offices on Tuesday, March 1. Providing local reporting on matters at city hall.  Exposing mismanagement in favor of doing right by the voters and taxpayers of this vibrant but struggling community. Thanks to you, our loyal listeners and readers, Gardner government might just be turning a new leaf.

Losing Your Voice: The reason we lose our voices is something that happens at school. Our voices move up the power center in our guts, which is the lungs, and all the support muscles that produce powerful voices because we forget that there's a connection. It happens to anybody who isn't in their bodies.   The Gravitas Method: Finding and knowing your voice with neuro-linguistic programming. The methodology is for more practical challenges rather than clinically diagnosed trauma. This is for people who might be scared to share their authentic voice, biologically not having competence, or being in that stress state.   It is about helping someone self-regulate, pause ground, find good alignment, know how to breathe in, in a way that allows the system to feel safe rather than that kind of panic breath that people do on stage. Ultimately, it's about finding congruence; about someone feeling that they have permission to walk out on the stage and be who they are.   It starts with a Pause: You breathe in ideas, pause, close your mouth and wait. Let the next thought arrive, and then speak it.    Tips and Hacks for the Breath: Teach your brain and your breath to match your thought and the need for the length of your line. If we match the breath that comes into the thought that we speak, we're in control.   Gravitas the Book and Course: Finding your voice in the corporate sector. It's about how you take the instrument, that is the voice, and find more calm, confidence and ease as a speaker, and how you really get congruent.    Caroline's Best Medicine: The Alexander technique. It's a life-changing discipline created by FM Alexander, who was a speaker who kept losing his voice. He realized his alignment, his posture was the issue and he self-taught himself to find the perfect posture of a toddler. It helped me find my alignment, my ease, my voice. I felt so much calmer. It's magic.

Integrity is so much more than ‘walking your talk' in active demonstration of your values. It is integration with ALL that life has to offer. In this episode, we explore integrity as an internal compass and pluralistic embodiment of connection. When we are willing to step outside of our personal identities, we mature emotionally and grow into trans-rational understanding - a worldview that is connective and universally accepting. Candice shares more personal stories, sharing about some times in her life when stepping into integrity meant risking security and belonging in favor of the gravitas within. This episode will help you reconnect with grittiness, grace, and your very own center of gravity. Explore how to better navigate dissonance and find the answer to the question: Is this a growth edge or a story I can no longer fit inside? Change is humbling and shedding identities can feel wildly unsettling, especially when you choose to express wholeness rather than play a part in a divisive norm. In the end, there is no greater service to the whole of life than an integral way of being.
