Comedian Gary Gulman is used to dealing with bullies. He grew up with older brothers, who he describes as "aggressive" and “unenlightened,” and he's witnessed plenty of unkind behavior from his peers in the New York City comedy scene. This is all despite being, in his words, “very, very sensitive.” This week, Gary talks about managing that sensitivity, standing up for his principles, and becoming more secure in who he is as a comedian and a man. What foods do Sporkful listeners resolve to eat more of in the new year, and why? And what's Dan's New Year's food resolution for 2025? All is revealed in our annual year-end spectacular. We also replay one of the Sporkful crew's favorite episodes of the year, with comedian Gary Gulman. Gary did so many food bits early in his stand-up career that he joked he was "a strictly food-based comic." But as his comedy started to evolve in new directions, the role of food in his act changed, too. Instead of observational humor, Gary now uses food in a more personal way — from talking about ice cream as a window into his clinical depression, to skewering income inequality through a discussion of Pop-Tarts. Gary joins Dan to discuss his personal and professional evolution over the past 30 years, through a survey of his three decades of food jokes. Plus Gary shares an entirely new joke about the word “spork.”The Sporkful production team includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Nora Ritchie, and Jared O'Connell. In this open and honest episode, we're joined by Patrick Donnelly, who discusses the often-unspoken struggles men face when the weight of life feels overwhelming and futile. Patrick bravely shares how anxiety and depression took root after becoming a father, amplifying his long-held belief that nothing he attempted would succeed. His story reveals the toll of a lifetime spent avoiding risks, taking the easiest paths, and resigning himself to failure before even trying. Through therapy and a transformative moment of vulnerability—sharing a personal essay about his mental health on Facebook and then in the local newspaper—Patrick not only began to heal but also sparked a ripple effect of hope. His honesty inspired hundreds of men to seek help, proving that even when it feels futile, taking a single step forward can change everything. This episode is a powerful exploration of how to confront self-doubt, embrace vulnerability, and redefine what it means to be brave. If you've ever felt like giving up before even starting, Patrick's journey is proof that change is possible. Sean Day waited until he was 26 to start doing stand-up. All it took was a best-man speech at a wedding and a blackout at a bar to get him going. He did his first open mic in 2017 and was Rochester's Funniest Person in 2019 before moving to Phoenix for a year. He's been back in Rochester since 2021 and works all over New York, including the Comedy at the Carlson, where he's been able to embarrass himself in front of comedians like Gary Gulman. He'll be opening for Sean Day at Crooked Mouth Brewery in Endicott, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 19.Follow Sean Day: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/seangoesallday/Support the show

Gary Gulman is a very successful comedian. He's released several specials, plays to packed rooms, and is incredibly highly regarded among his peers. But for his first book, Misfits: Growing Up Awkward in the ‘80s, Gary didn't want to just rehash his act into book form. Gary, an avid reader, has read books like that and felt ripped off by them. Instead, he dove into his formative years to take a close look at the stories and experienced that shaped him and his complex state of mental health. We talk with Gary about those memories, the public life of his depression, and why food is funny.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. Last week we learned about using the four different styles of humor to your advantage, and who makes a good target for a joke. But what if you read the room wrong and absolutely bomb? On this episode of How To!, the second in a two-part series, we resume our conversation with Naomi Bagdonas, co-author of Humor, Seriously!, and Michael Terry, the most hilarious hedge fund guy we've ever met. They swap stories about office jokes that fell flat, how to navigate a suddenly tense situation and what to do if your humor accidentally offends someone (especially your boss). If you liked this episode, check out “How To Be Funny” with comedian Gary Gulman. If you want to discover your own humor style, take the test on Naomi and Jennifer's website. Do you have a joke that killed at the office, or totally bombed? Send us a note at howto@slate.com or leave us a voicemail at 646-495-4001. Comedian/author GARY GULMAN joins Andy in the 2nd hour for a Guest Spiral! But first, Josh and Andy discuss Joe Flaherty, Conan nostalgia, Jewdar, Acting, and plenty of other First Thought Theater.
Gary Gulman did so many food bits early in his stand-up career that he joked he was "a strictly food-based comic." But as his comedy started to evolve in new directions, the role of food in his act changed, too. Plus Gary shares an entirely new joke about the word “spork.”The Sporkful production team includes Dan Pashman, Emma Morgenstern, Andres O'Hara, Nora Ritchie, and Jared O'Connell.Transcript available at www.sporkful.com.
