It's a story about the rise and history of K-pop in the United States, as told from the point-of-view of the Korean diaspora in Los Angeles by host Vivian Yoon. The underground hip-hop scene in Los Angeles was thriving in the late 1980s. And there, soaking in the vibe, was a Korean American college student by the name of Jae Chong. He was also making music on the side, but didn't think much was going to come of it. That is, until an out-of-the-blue invitation brought him and his friends to Korea when K-pop was taking off. Their group, Solid, would become the Kings of R&B and the first Korean American act to make a splash in the Korean music industry. Vivian reflects on the importance of Solid and sees the group's Korean-Americanness as the cornerstone of their success.(Originally published March 16, 2023) Support K-pop Dreaming by donating now at LAist.com/join This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Many of us believe in some myths when it comes to loneliness. But God has given us instructions on how to deal with our loneliness now and for eternity.
We all suffer from anxiety to some extent, and God's Word has something to say to us about our anxiety. While we can't control what we go through, we can choose what to think about, and God wants to walk with us in our anxiety.
I preach that consistency is one of the most important things when running any sort of content channel. If you're going to do a podcast, YouTube, blog or just active on social, the most important thing to be is... consistent. Well, last Monday went by and I did not release an episode. My excuse: A cat 4 hurricane and a bad head cold. Hurricanes or not, this still bothered me and I wanted to share a quick story in this 5 minute solo episode. Thanks for listening and sharing!
Shame has a propensity to send one to self-isolation. The Good News is Jesus covers our shame while we were at enmity with Him and calls us to His table. He does this so that we might be mighty oaks of righteousness to participate in His work.

I'm not ok when I don't have a healthy understanding of fear. Fear of man paralyzes us, while fear of God sets us free.
Many Christians feel overwhelmed, as though we're drowning beneath a huge mass that we can't get out from under. It causes us to feel numb, exhausted, and burnt out. We may feel this way for many reasons, but there's only one way to escape it and prevent it; the Spirit of God.
Depression and anxiety tend to be some of those touchy subjects that are tough to tackle from a Christian perspective. It's not complicated just because the illnesses themselves are so complex, manifesting themselves in myriad ways, but also because perspectives about mental disorders vary greatly throughout the Church. This isn't to paint the Church with broad strokes. Incorrect beliefs about mental illness are pervasive throughout our culture. However, some of the “church-y” misconceptions about clinical depression and anxiety spring from a genuine desire to understand them scripturally. It's necessary to generalize a bit to understand these attitudes: there are things well-meaning Christians tend to get wrong. Of course, there is way more information about anxiety and depression than what can be summed up in one article, so it's certainly worth doing more research on the subject. But if we as the Church are going to start talking about these issues, here are a few things we should know: 1. Depression isn't what the Church sometimes makes it out to be. It's not a character defect, a spiritual disorder or an emotional dysfunction. And chief of all, it's not a choice. Asking someone to “try” not being depressed is tantamount to asking someone who's been shot to try and stop bleeding. Such an attitude can dangerously appear in the Church as, “if only you had enough faith.” Cue the record scratch for any Christian regarding matters of healing. Having faith in God's ability to heal is hugely important, and personal faith can help ease depression. But to deny medical or psychiatric treatment to someone suffering from mental illness is really no different than denying them to someone with a physical illness. The difference between the two is that the former is invisible. Speaking of the invisible, some faith traditions are quick to suggest demonic attack as the cause for depression. While I'm convinced that there's definitely a spiritual element—the enemy will exploit any weakness—medical science holds that major depressive disorder is real and the causes are manifold. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/israel97/message

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jay-Way over Zoom video!Don't get in the way of Jay-Way's hustle. On "Shawty Goodnight," the hip-hop innovator bids goodbye to a jealous lover who has pushed him into a corner, forcing him to choose between romance and music. He chooses to stay loyal to his art, turning "Shawty Goodnight" into a tribute to creativity and commitment. A different kind of partnership runs through "Shawty Goodnight," which finds Jay-Way sharing vocal duties with guest rapper Parris Chariz. The song's verses are packed with rhythm and rhyme, but the two artists sing those lyrics rather than rapping them. The result is a song whose momentum is matched by its melody, with synthesizers, electric guitar riffs, and an 808 drum loop all evoking the neon nostalgia of the 1980s. Don't mistake "Shawty Goodnight" for a track that looks backward, though. This is a modern-day tribute to the artistic pursuit, delivered by a multi-lingual, genre-bending songwriter who has always embraced unconventionality. Jay-Way is dedicated to the climb, and these days, he's looking nowhere but up. "Shawty Goodnight" is available on all digital streaming platforms. About Jay-Way: Jay-Way is redefining hip-hop music. Based in Amsterdam, he brings a broad, boundary-breaking perspective to the genre, filling his songs with the street-smart swagger of rap and the modern melodies of pop, the laidback cool of old-school soul music, and the optimistic outlook of the gospel. It's a sound that hasn't just set him apart from his contemporaries; it's made him a genuine star at home and abroad, too, with songs like “Happen Dappen” topping Spotify's NL Viral Chart while racking up nearly 2.5 million streams. Arriving in 2020, No, I'm Not OK follows the previous releases Jaynalysis, No Life No Wifi, and Teen Gohan, mixing Jay-Way's most pop-influenced songs to date with lyrics about trusting your gut and rising above yourobstacles.
