In one of our most-viewed sessions from the 2023 Church Mental Health Summit, Debra Fileta, a Licensed Professional Counselor, relationship expert, national speaker, and founder of the Debra Fileta Counselor's Network, talks about the progression from thoughts to feelings to behaviors. As we take inventory of our thoughts, understand our emotions, and then trust what is true about God, we can experience the ways in which God desires to heal us. Quotes Just because you're a Christian doesn't mean you have to be “okay.” It's ok not to be ok, but it's not ok to stay there. We've got to put in the work for emotional and mental health. We need to remind our body that Jesus wins in the end. Our feelings are a signal cluing us into what's happening below. Feelings are real, but they aren't always true. Sadie and her mom, Korie Robertson, tackle one of the top questions they get: "Should Christians get tattoos?" Korie shares why she was initially surprised when Sadie wanted to get her first tattoo, and Sadie explains the reason why she wanted "fearless" on her inner wrist. They reveal the significance of their matching wave tattoos — and why Denmark was the best place to get them. Is it Ok to Not Be Ok?It's a common phrase as mental health awareness and acceptance makes strides forward….but we have a long way to go. So are we really living up to the saying, “It's ok to not be ok,” and allowing people space to truly express how they feel? Kim, and guest Kevin Sprinkle, discuss this topic. Join them as they talk about how important it is to listen to people and validate their feelings….or as Kevin said it best, “Sometimes I need to be broken-hearted with you.”They dive into how all of this affects men differently than women, and how it can affect relationships if we aren't listening to our partner and giving them space to be not ok. This week the Depression Daddy talks about depression again and the Deconstruction Daddy talks about deconstruction again. For our 11th episode, we just talk freely about where we are at. It's been nearly 6 months since we started the podcast, and we thought it would be good to ask the question, "How are you, really?" (Thank you We're Not Really Strangers). This conversation goes into a bit of an overview of our process the past year or so and then a little bit into witchy stuff like Tarot. For our Fucking News segment, we talk about the worldwide prayer to end atheism and the comedy that ensued as a result, Gabe Gonzalez gives us another petty prayer, and Kenneth gets into more hijinx. Welcome to episode #81!In this episode, Braden is running solo talking with author, speaker and counsellor, Debra Fileta to discuss her book Are You Really OK?Emotional HealthOften the mindset we have with emotions is that they dictate our response to life and we don't give any thought to the roots of our emotions or that they are signals for something that may be going on under the surface. Emotions can explode out of us when we haven't addressed what we are feeling in a healthy way or given our emotions a healthy outlet. Emotions are neither right nor wrong, but they can be indicators for us about what is really going on in our inner life.Spiritual HealthSpiritual health is not necessarily the culmination of our actions (reading the Bible, praying, going to church, etc), but is dependent on who we truly believe God to be! Our belief and having a right understanding of who God is, determines how we view ourselves and others. We may try and do all the "right things," but if we think God is angry and aloof, or isn't present, then our spiritual health will reflect those wrong beliefs more than what we do. Mental HealthOur mental health often has a direct link to our past. We tend to think that time heals all wounds, but that misunderstanding has caused harm because often our wounds stay with us and can become worse if not addressed. God wants to pull back those layers by inviting us to confront our past with his help, and to receive healing. Physical HealthIf we don't tackle the low hanging fruit of physical health, we can be greatly impaired from from having any measure of overall health in our lives. If we don't get sleep, exercise or if we take on more then we should, we are on a slippery slope to burnout or even physical illness. Stay tunedNext week, Matt and Braden talk with a very special guest......Dave Hafner (Braden's dad). Sometimes we confuse spiritual health with mental health, assuming they are one in the same when that's often far from the truth. Knowing this, it seems appropriate to take a little deeper dive into our emotional health with Licensed Professional Counselor, Debra Fileta. We cover a lot of ground today with topics like: ways to take inventory of our mental health, when spiritual answers don't address our mental health issues, the importance of modeling emotional health with our kids, training our kids to identify their emotions, recognizing our kids' default emotion and investigating the deeper issue. And please don't miss Debra's advice on preparing our kids for dating relationships, the frequent pitfalls they may face, and resources we can use to navigate the dating years. Here's to a show addressing the very important mental and emotional health issues facing all parents!
How do you respond when someone asks you, “Are you OK?” Debra Fileta shares the importance of getting honest with ourselves about how we're doing, and the dangers of neglecting our spiritual, emotional, mental, and/or physical health. She tells us what our past can reveal about pain in our present, and how to biblically address healing in a holistic way that unlocks hope for the future. She also explains how you can start understanding and expressing your feelings, and how your health becomes a legacy of healing for your children. What if we want to knit a pair of socks with skulls on them? What if we want to learn the old songs of the Gaelic lands or grab a concertina? Well. If that's what calls you, then you should just get to it. Melissa Weaver Dunning understands this feeling and has plenty of experiences spinning, knitting, natural dyeing and hand weaving that overlap with great stories, traditional music and a desire to choose a life for it's rich variety over the money that may or may not flow in. This is Episode One in Finally Effing Happy's Sisterhood Stories, a series of interviews with kick-ass, can-do women who share their journey to joy through chronic illness. You are not alone! There is strength in our stories. And it is an honor to get to share them with you. Together we are powerful! Today's takeaways: It's okay to be pissed at your illness - for a while. The anticipation of having to struggle over and over and over again, keeps us from living in the moment. Can you do this one moment? Don't do it alone! You can't control the future moments, but you can control what you are doing right now. Learning to ask for help can be a gift. The littlest things can be the most powerful. Sometimes the thing we are afraid we are going to lose as a result of our illness, is the very thing we are given as the greatest gift of our illness. When you deal with the emotional aspects of your illness, your body can heal easier. Your body is a gift.
